Virginia was born on October 3, 1921, in Newburg, Iowa, to Ray and Charlotte “Lottie” Reynolds Smith. She was raised in the Newburg area and graduated from Newburg High School. She also attended AIB in Des Moines and she later worked for the Meredith Corporation. On November 29, 1941, she was married to Laurence Stanley in Kirksville, Missouri. After their marriage the couple farmed in the Newburg, Kellogg and Gilman areas prior to their retirement. Following the death of her husband she was married to Robert Harrod of Blair, Oklahoma. They divided their time between Iowa, Oklahoma and San Benito, Texas. She moved to Grinnell in 1998. Virginia enjoyed volunteering for the Newburg Congregational Church Ladies Aid and she enjoyed quilting, dancing, raising flowers and her pet poodles. When she lived on the farm she was a 4-H Leader. Survivors include one daughter, Charlotte (Bryce) Vander Werff of Kellogg; two sons, Lyle “Butch” (Karen) Stanley of Houston, Texas and Dennis (Sherri) Stanley of Seattle, Washington; seven grandchildren; six great grandchildren; one sister, Betty Cooper of Grinnell; and her sister-in-law, Carol (Byron) Brain of Newton. She was preceded in death by her parents; both of her husbands; and one brother, Luverne Smith.

Mary L. Gryp, age 88, of Victor, died Tuesday, April 11, 2006, at Brookhaven Nursing Home in Brooklyn. A funeral mass will be held 10 a.m., Monday, April 17, 2006, at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor with Rev. Brian Shepley officiating. Pallbearers are her grandsons, Jeff Gryp, Joel Gryp, Todd Gryp, Tony Gryp, Wes Gryp and Dennis Wentland. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Victor. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning at 2 p.m. on Sunday, with the family present to greet friends from 4 – 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. A rosary will be held at 5 p.m. and a scripture service will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday evening. Memorials may be directed to the Calvary Cemetery in Victor. Mary was born the daughter of Richard and Leontina Blanckaert Van Horbeck near Belle Plaine, Iowa on November 27, 1917. She was raised near Belle Plaine and attended country school near her home in Iowa County. She was married to Isadore Gryp on December 28, 1936, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Belle Plaine. To this union were born four children: Elaine, John, David and Gary. The couple farmed together in the Victor area. Mary was also a cook at Brookhaven Nursing Home in Brooklyn for thirteen years. Her faith was very important to her and she was a longstanding member of the Altar and Rosary Society at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor. She enjoyed crocheting, was an avid bingo player, and bowled until her 85th birthday. Mary is survived by her daughter Elaine Wentland of Altoona, Iowa; her sons, John (Jean) Gryp of Victor and Gary (Cindy) Gryp of Victor; twenty-three grandchildren; forty-six great grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; her sister Alma DeCapp of Silvis, Illinois; and several nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Isadore in 1983; her son David Gryp in 1999; her brothers Maurice and Joe Van Horbeck; and her sister Helen Sanders.

Dorothy M. Puls, 91, of Grinnell died on Thursday, April 14, 2006, at St. Francis Manor. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 18, 2006, at the Trinity Lutheran Church near Grinnell with Rev Herb Knudten, pastor of the church, officiating. Organist will be Teresa Ziegenmeyer and vocalist will be Herb Knudten. Casket Bearers will be Robert Fuerst, Marvin Kolars, Clifton Schultz, Preston Shaw, Dirk Sleeuwenhoek and Bud Smothers. Interment will be at the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Dorothy was born on October 30, 1914, in Ottumwa, Iowa to T.P. and Margaret Danielson Box. She was raised in Ottumwa and graduated from Ottumwa High School with the Class of 1931. She attended Grinnell College and later received a BA Degree in History at William Penn College in Oskaloosa. She taught school for 30 years with 8 years in rural schools and then in Malcom and Brooklyn. On February 22, 1939, she was married to Walter F. "Ward" Puls in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa. The couple farmed near Malcom until 1973 and then moved to their farm in Sheridan Township. She had been a resident of St. Francis Manor since September of 2005. Dorothy was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Homemakers Club and the LGT Club in the Sheridan neighborhood. Survivors include one son, Donald Puls of Grinnell and several nieces and nephews. Dorothy died April 13, 2006, at St. Francis Manor, at the age of 91. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ward in 2005; two infant daughters, Martha and Mary Puls; two brothers, Herbert and Donald Box; and one sister and two other brothers in infancy.

Bonita Raye Bortell

Bonnie was born on January 27, 1941, in Des Moines, Iowa to Marty and Ferne Mack Ward. She was raised in Des Moines and graduated from Des Moines Tech High School. On July 16, 1961, she was married to Richard Bortell in Chillicothe, Missouri. The couple lived in Grinnell and she worked as a matron and meter-maid at the Grinnell Police Department and as a waitress at the Skel Diner, Pagliai’s Pizza and the Longhorn Restaurant. For the past 10 years she was a security officer for the DNR at Rock Creek State Park near Grinnell. Bonnie was a member of the Grinnell Fire Department Auxiliary and she enjoyed her craft projects, camping, fishing and wintering in Texas. Survivors include her husband, Richard Bortell of Gilman; her children and their spouses, Neal Bortell, Lori and Andre Versendaal and Roger Bortell, all of Grinnell and Jeff and Kris Bortell of Sioux Center, Iowa; 14 grandchildren; one brother, Dennis Ward of Des Moines; and three sisters, Elaine Dooley of San Antonio, Texas, Sharon Mastin of Marshall, Missouri and Linda Dragotto of Florida. She was preceded in death by her parent.

Mary Bevins, age 90, of Grinnell, died Wednesday, April 19, 2006, at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center in Grinnell. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 29th at the United Church of Christ Congregational in Grinnell. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning at 12 noon on Friday with the family present from 6 – 8 p.m. on Friday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mary A. Bevins Memorial Fund. Mary is survived by her children, Robert Bevins of Post Falls, Idaho, Bart Bevins and his wife Patrice Vick of St. Paul, Minnesota, and Julie Eberbach and her husband David of Grinnell; her sister Margaret Ann Marone of Mission, Texas; and five grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, Wilbert and Miriam Baker; her husband Earl on October 30, 1994; her brother John Baker; and her sister Rachael MacIntosh.

Jim was born on January 21, 1950, in Orange City, IA to Arnold and Angeline Starkenburg Van Es. He was raised in Boyden, Iowa and graduated from Boyden-Hull High School with the Class of 1968. In 1972, he received a BA degree in Physical Education and Mathematics from Northwestern College in Orange City and later received a Masters degree from St. Scholastic College in Duluth, MN. On October 28, 1972, he was married to Phyllis Rachel Kreun in Chandler, MN. Following their marriage the couple lived in Orange City while he student taught in Sibley, IA. They moved to Grinnell and he began his teaching and coaching career at Lynnville-Sully School District. He taught junior high math and coached football and basketball in the Searsboro school facility. In 1980, he managed Porter Recreation in Grinnell and he later worked for Marshalltown Office Supply and was a sales representative for Apple Computers. In the mid-1980s he returned to education and he was currently teaching 8th grade mathematics at Berg Middle School in Newton. Jim was a member of the Grinnell Christian Church and he was Past President of the Grinnell Country Club and the Grinnell Jaycees. He was currently the Team Leader at Berg Middle School. Jim will be remembered as an excellent teacher by many of his students and he was a passionate fan of the Oakland Raiders and the San Francisco Giants. Survivors include his wife of 33 years, Phyllis Van Es of Grinnell; his parents, Arnold and Angeline Starkenburg Van Es of Sheldon, IA; his brother, Duane (Mary) Van Es of Boyden, IA; his sister, Brenda (Laryl) DeWild of Boyden, IA; his father and mother-in-law, Henry and Ruby Kreun of Chandler, MN; his nieces and nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, John and Jenny Van Es and John and Lydia Starkenburg.

Lester L. Elrod, 91, of the Cherokee Village, Arkansas area and formerly of Gilman died on Friday, November 3, 2006, at the Ash Flat Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Ash Flat, Arkansas. Funeral services for Mr. Elrod will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, November 8, at the Church of the Brethren near Prairie City, Iowa with the Rev. Lynn Elrod, pastor of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Ames, officiating. Organist was Nora Lee Warrick and pianist was Marlene Smith. Pallbearers were Bill Amsden, Larry Dahl, Brian Lucas, Tim Vanderpool, Zac Wheeler, Greg Wilson, and Phil Wilson. Honorary bearers were Cathy Dahl, Sandy Faust, Shari Lucas, Abby McCrea, and Katie Wheeler. Burial will be in Griffis Cemetery near Prairie City. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 7, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Lester L. Elrod Memorial Fund. The son of Carl and Myra Young Elrod, Lester was born August 17, 1915, in Prairie City. He received his education in Jasper County schools. Lester was married to Florence M. Romick on March 28, 1936, in Prairie City. The couple farmed in the Prairie City area for several years and later moved to Gilman in 1958. While in Gilman he was employed in the construction field. In 1980, the couple moved to Cherokee Village, where he owned and operated Elrod’s Furniture. Lester was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Prairie City and the United Methodist Churches in Gilman and Cherokee Village. He was a member of the Lions Clubs in both Gilman and Cherokee Village. He was also active with the Gilman Saddle Club. Lester was known for his strong work ethic, his "big heart" and being sentimental. He loved horses and working with others on the Gilman Saddle Club. He enjoyed spending time with his family, particularly playing games together, and collecting miniature horses. Survivors include four daughters and their spouses, Shirley and John Van Wyhe of Oskaloosa, Wilma and Leon Wilson of Grinnell, Sue Vanderpool of Mammoth Springs, Arkansas and Carla and Dave McCrea of Runnells; one brother and his wife, John and Roberta Elrod of Prairie City; ten grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Florence in 2002; one infant daughter; two grandsons; and one great grandson.

Reginald “Bill” Scurr, 90, of Grinnell and formerly of Gilman died Friday November 3, 2006, at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center in Grinnell. Funeral service for Mr. Scurr will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 7, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with Rev. John Saxton of the Mayflower, officiating. Pallbearers will be Chad Anthony, Jim Buitendorp, Grant Ferguson, Blake, Clayton, Harry, Joe, and Steve Scurr. Burial will be in Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman. Visitation with the family present will be held one hour prior to service time. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mayflower Human Needs Fund. The son of Joseph Harry and Ida Eunice Clark Scurr, Bill was born May 6, 1916, in Gilman. He was raised on the family farm and was a 1933 graduate of Gilman High School. He attended Iowa State University and received a B.A. degree from St. Olaf College. He later received a MLS degree from University of Chicago Library Science and had taken 96 hours of graduate study towards his Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. He had made his home in Iowa City for several years and later moved to Chicago in the late 1940’s. While in Chicago, he held several professional positions with the University of Chicago and later Chicago Public Library including, Chief, Humanities Department and Chief, Literature and Philosophy Division. Following his retirement, he returned in 1980, to the family farm in Gilman. He moved to the Mayflower Home in 2002. Bill was a member of the Illinois and American Library Association and served on various ALA committees. He was Advertising manager of the Illinois Library Association from 1956 to 1958 and had contributed many articles to several professional journals. Survivors include one nephew and his wife, Harry and Janet Scurr of Gilman; five great nieces and nephews; eleven great-great nieces and nephews, and a great-great-great niece and nephew. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Susan and Opal Scurr; one brother, J. Clark Scurr; and one niece, Nancy Buitendorp.

Ross was born on July 12, 1913, on the family farm near Grinnell. He was raised on the family farm, attended rural school and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1931. Following his education he worked for Swift and Company in Grinnell. On October 13, 1934, he was married to Ila Adkins at the Methodist Parsonage in Grinnell. The couple operated a grain and livestock farm in the Grinnell area. They moved into Grinnell in 2002. Ross was a 50-year member of the Grange and the Grinnell Elks Lodge. He served on the Legislative committee of the Iowa State Grange and also served on the Board of Directors of Poweshiek Mutual Insurance Company and Malcom Co-op Elevator. For many years he was a member of the Poweshiek County School Board and was involved in the rural and urban reorganization of the local school districts. He was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church of Grinnell and served on the church’s organ committee and stewardship committee. Ross hand many passions in life but music and soil conservation were the most prominent. He organized a family five piece band called, “Mintle’s Melody Men” and played at dances in Central Iowa. As a farmer, he was also a steward of the land and he planted over 1800 trees on his farm. He is survived by his wife, Ila Mintle of Grinnell; three sons, Michael Mintle and Steven Mintle, both of Grinnell and Dennis Mintle of Longmont, Colorado; one daughter, Mary McIvor of Denver, Colorado; and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Denny Leo Mintle; and two sisters, Lona Adkins and Norma Edwards.

Lawrence Beauregard Battey was born January 11, 1930, at Oscawana on the Hudson, New York to Bryan and Eleanore Starke Battey. His father was Assistant Commissioner of Patents of the U.S. and the family lived in Washington D.C. His father died in 1936 at the age of 38. Bo attended Sidwell Friends School in Washington D.C. with two older brothers, Bryan and Fraser. He attended Westminister School in Simsbury, Connecticut. His mother remarried eleven years later to a Midwesterner moving the family to Oskaloosa, Iowa, where Bo graduated from high school. Bo attended Grinnell College for a short while, and then moved to Boulder City, Nevada, where he worked with his uncle in his photography business and also worked at Hoover Dam as a power switchboard operator. He moved his wife and three children, Bill, Karen and Howard to Grinnell in 1968 to operate Bo Battey Texaco Station, Greyhound Bus Depot and U-Haul Rental. His first wife, Jeanette, died at the age of 43, after being married for 25 years. On April 4, 1980, he married Betty Ann Randell, which allowed them to enjoy their combined families. Together they loved wintering in Scottsdale, Arizona for twelve years, where they met and continue to welcome numerous friends. Bo served on the Board of the Boy Scouts of America, Grinnell Community Theatre, the Grinnell Fine Arts Council, was a member of the Senior Chamber of Commerce, the Elks, Grinnell Country Club and attended the Grinnell United Methodist Church on a regular basis with his wife. Bo wrote “One For the Money, Two For the Show,” to dedicate the new Grinnell Community Theatre at its opening. His ability to write poetry for many occasions has brought both laughter and tears. Along with his many attributes, Bo will be remembered most as a loving husband, father and stepfather, a caring and “hands-on” grandfather and great grandfather, a wonderful storyteller to his numerous neighbors, friends and relatives.

Bo is survived by his wife Betty Ann of Grinnell; his children, William Battey of Des Moines, Iowa, Karen (John) Lipcamon of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Howard (Cassie) Battey of Andalusia, Alabama; one stepdaughter Leigh Ann (Casey) Meacham of Grinnell; nine grandchildren; four great grandchildren; and one brother, Bryan (Jean) Battey of Ashville, North Carolina. Bo was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Jeanette; and his brother Fraser Battey.

Nesha Ann (Paulson) Meyer

Nesha was born on March 5, 1957, in Grinnell, to Keith and Shirley Lowry Paulson. She was raised on the family farm west of Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School in 1975. On July 30, 1976, she was married to Gary Meyer at her family home. The couple lived in Grinnell and she worked as a seamstress for the DeLong Sportswear Company. Besides being a homemaker and mother she also worked in the produce department of the former Food-4-Less store and operated a child-care service in her home. Most recently she worked for the Rock Creek Athletic Company in Grinnell and as a seamstress in her home. Nesha enjoyed horseback riding, cross stitching, skiing, roller skating and playing intramural softball and volleyball. Her children and grandchildren were her biggest passion in life and she enjoyed watching them participate in school and spring events. Survivors include her parents, Keith and Shirley Paulson of Grinnell; her children, Camille Meyer and Carrie Meyer, both of Cedar Rapids, Laura (Joe) Patten of Grinnell, Juelles Brenner and Jamie Brenner, both of Grinnell; two grandchildren, Lily and Lana Patten; two brothers, Craig (Shelly) Paulson and Mark (Brenda) Paulson, both of Grinnell; and one sister, Karma (Kelly) Werner of Grinnell.

Flora Loetta See, age 67, of Grinnell, died Monday, November 6, 2006, at her home. A memorial service will be held 10:00 a.m., Saturday, November 25, 2006, at the Smith Funeral Home with Rev. David Schearer of the Boone Street Church of Christ in Marshalltown and her son Alan See as officiants. Her daughter Elizabeth Stevens will recite her 50th wedding anniversary poem. Vocalists will be her nieces Tyne Riek and Tiffini Steele. Friends may call at the Smith Funeral Home beginning at 9 a.m. on Saturday with the family present to greet friends at this time.

The daughter of Ernest Eugene and Cassie Belle May Lawrence, she was born in Kirksville, Missouri on March 23, 1939. She attended school in Miland, Missouri and married Harold “Hank” Joseph See on August 25, 1956. They initially made their home in Grinnell, Iowa and later in Pekin, Illinois, Maquoketa, Iowa, Boulder Colorado, and Abilene, Texas after returning to Grinnell in August of 2005. Loetta was a gifted painter and a master gardener. She was a business partner in many ventures with her husband. The couple vacationed in Canada, Germany, Mexico and visited the 47 of the 50 states numerous times. Loetta is survived by her husband of fifty years, Harold “Hank” Joseph See of Grinnell, her son Alan (Phyllis) See of Miamisburg, Ohio; her daughter, Elizabeth Stevens and her fiancé David Chapman of Abilene, Texas; three grandchildren, Austin, Taylor and Victoria, all of Miamisburg, Ohio; five sisters, Pansy Wellington and Annabelle Novinger, both of Novinger, Missouri, Shirley Steele and Phyllis Sitton, both of Grinnell, and Charlotte Van Egdom of Montour, Iowa; one brother, Jerry Lawrence of Kansas City, Missouri. Loetta was preceded in death by parents; her brothers Ernest and Rodney Lawrence; and her sister Janet See.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice.

Neva was born the daughter of Charles and Lillie Moore Hughes on August 28, 1912, in Rose Hill, Iowa. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural schools near her home. She then attended Oskaloosa High School. Following her education, she continued to live in Oskaloosa before moving to Grinnell in the early 1950's. She was united in marriage to William "Bill" McGinn in Raymond, Nebraska in August of 1958. She was employed at the Grinnell Shoe Company and at DeLong's Sportswear until her retirement in 1974. She was a talented seamstress and enjoyed creating many crafts, which included knitting and crocheting. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Grinnell Eagles Auxiliary. The couple enjoyed camping and traveling to Arizona to visit their family.

Neva is survived by her husband of forty-eight years, Bill McGinn of Grinnell; her son Howard (Beverly) McVay of Phoenix, Arizona; five grandsons; thirteen great grandchildren; nine great-great grandchildren; and her sister Betty Walker of Mesa, Arizona.

Neva passed away Tuesday, November 7, 2006, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers and sisters, Edith Doonan, Ida Knowler, Clifford Hughes, John Hughes, and Marvin Hughes.

Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice.
