Zella was born on April 22, 1908, in State Center, Iowa, the daughter of Corydon and Mary Olive Buck. She was a graduate of Lamoille High School and attended business college in Des Moines, Iowa. On November 19, 1934, Zella was married to Carl Benson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple live in Marshalltown until 1937, when they moved to Grinnell to make their home. Carl and Zella owned and operated the Benson Turkey Farm from 1937 - 1973. After retirement, Carl and Zella enjoyed trout fishing, camping and traveling. After the death of her husband in 1984, Zella continued living on the family farm until 1996, at which time she moved to the Mayflower Home.

Zella was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational Church in Grinnell. She enjoyed cooking, reading, listening to music, crafts, counted cross stitch, crocheting, knitting and spending time with her family and friends. Holidays were special to her as it gathered her family. Zella delighted in her grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved her family. She will be missed by all of those who loved her. Zella is survived by her daughter Sally Maring of Grinnell and her family, husband Gary and children Kim, Pam and Jennifer, and her son David Benson of Grinnell and his family, wife Fonda and children Darci, Tim and Amanda; along with 10 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter Linda Thomas, great granddaughter Matilyn McClure, four brothers, and five sisters.

Charles W. Pawlak

Charles was born on May 9, 1916, near Victor, Iowa, the third of five children of Anton and Augusta Bringman Pawlak. He graduated from Victor High School in 1932. Charles worked as a farm hand for Clarence Schultz and then as a mechanic for his cousin Rudy Meyer. In April of 1941, Charles entered military service in the Army. He completed aircraft maintenance training and spent more than 40 months deployed in the Pacific theatre of World War II as a Crew Chief maintaining B-25 bombers. He was proud of the fact that no aircraft he was responsible for was lost in action. In January 1942, Charles married Hilda Bott in Lincoln, Nebraska. To this union was born one son, Roger. Following discharge from service in 1945, Charles and his brother Johnny entered into partnership with Rudy Meyer in Meyer Tractor Service. He eventually became sole owner and changed the name of the business to Pawlak’s, Inc. in 1976. He enjoyed participating in the farm equipment business for over 60 years and cherished the acquaintances and friendships developed there. Charles was an active member of St. James Lutheran Church in Victor, serving in various posts. He was a veteran member of the Victor Volunteer Fire Department and served as Fire Chief. He was also a 60-year member of the Harold E. Smith American Legion Post #54. He enjoyed fishing and bowling in his younger years and repairing machines, gardening and building things. He really enjoyed working with his hands, especially on machinery.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Hilda Pawlak of Brooklyn; his son, Roger (Patricia) Pawlak of Victor; two brothers, Johnny (Elsie) Pawlak of Roanoke, Virginia and Henry Pawlak of Grinnell; and several nieces and nephews.

Charles was 90 years of age, and he was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Anton (Tony) Pawlak Jr; and one sister, Agnes (Menzo) Davis.

Lillie Mae Green

Lillie was born on December 25, 1907, on the family farm near Sigourney, Iowa, to Denver and Emma Hutton. She attended rural school and graduated from Martinsburg High School in 1924. On December 30, 1925, she was married to Elmer Andrew Green in Keokuk County, Iowa. The couple farmed in Keokuk and Poweshiek Counties. Following the death of her husband in 1960 she moved to Grinnell in 1961. She was a library assistant at Burling Library on the campus of Grinnell College from 1961 to 1973. From 1973 to 1984, she worked at Stewart Library in Grinnell as a library assistant. Lillie attended the First Baptist Church in Grinnell and was a member of the Ruth Circle of the church. She enjoyed her children, grandchildren, reading, crocheting, baking and spending time in her yard. Survivors include one son, Hubert (Harriet) Green of Englewood, Ohio; two daughters, Maxine (Harold) Mouchka and Betty (Carroll) Gerard, all of Grinnell; five grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; and nine great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two sisters, Grace Davis and Icel Veldhuizen; and five brothers, Virgil, Harold Glen, Roscoe and Jim Hutton.

Leone C. Gropper, 86, of Grinnell died November 16, 2006, in the Monarch Wing of Skiff Medical Center in Newton. Funeral services for Mrs. Gropper was held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, November 18, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson, Grinnell Christian Church and Rev. Mark Young, Newton First Christian Church, officiating. Pallbearers were Corey and Scott Cope, Greg, Jeff, Tim, Jeremy and Joshua Criswell, Jessica Owens, and Jenny Snyder. Burial was in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom. Memorial contributions may be directed to Newton Hospice. The daughter of Peter and Florence Chrisman Dohrn, Leona was born March 29, 1920, in Des Moines. She was raised in Brooklyn and was a graduate of Brooklyn High School. Leone was married to Raymond E. Criswell on February 7, 1939, in Unionville, Missouri. For several years they farmed near Malcom and then moved to Grinnell. She was later married to Wayne L. Gropper on May 8, 1968, in Moline, Illinois and they moved to their home in Oakland Acres in 1977. Leone owned and operated BoKay Flowers in Grinnell and later was employed part-time for Bates Flowers. She was an active member of the Eastern Star, Eagles Auxiliary, and Elks Auxiliary. Leone held a great love and devotion for her family and valued her time with them. She loved to sing and dance and enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. She enjoyed flowers, cooking and entertaining, fishing, and canning produce from her garden. She held a wonderful sense of humor and liked to have fun. Survivors include two children and their spouses, Karen and John Schermerhorn of Newton and Fred and Marge Criswell of Newton; a daughter-in-law, Kennetha Criswell of Searsboro; two step-children, Mary Johnson of Harlan and Marilyn Gropper of St. Paul, Minnesota; one brother, Richard Loomis and his wife, Betty of Daytona Beach, Florida; seven grandchildren; one step-grandchild; eleven great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; one son, Jerry Allen Criswell; and two sisters, Betty Frank and Josephine Werner.

Sally Irene Kelley, 91, of Grinnell and the widow of Manson Kelley, died November 16, 2006, at the Mayflower Home Health Care Center in Grinnell Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 20, at the Carman Center of the Mayflower Home with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of the Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Pianist will be Pat Saxon. Vocalist will be Bill Surbrug. Graveside services and burial will be held 2:00 p.m. Monday at Violet Hill Cemetery in Perry, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Sally Irene Kelley Memorial Fund. The daughter of Robert Lee and Artie Mae Ashley Foshee, she was born December 16, 1914, in Texarkana, Arkansas. She was raised and educated in Arkansas. She was married to Claude Davis in 1932 in Arkansas where the couple continued to make their home. Her husband later served in the United States Army during World War II and was killed in action while serving in the European Theatre. On December 21, 1944, she was married to Perry Manson Kelley in Little Rock, Arkansas. The couple lived in Arkansas and throughout the United States prior to moving to Perry in 1954. While in Perry she was employed as a seamstress and did alteration work with Gardner Clothing Store and Ellis Dry Cleaning. She was also employed in the dietary department at the Lutheran Home in Perry. The couple moved to Grinnell in 1974, and she was employed at Grinnell General Hospital and Grinnell Christian Church. Irene was a member of the Primitive Baptist Churches in Arkansas, Winterset and Grinnell and attended the Grinnell Christian Church. Survivors include two daughters, Carol Dean and her husband, Allen of Grinnell and Sally Kelley of the Chicago area and two grandchildren, Amanda Dean of Marshalltown and Curtis Dean of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her step-father, Tom Garrett; both husbands; one brother, Freeman Foshee; one step-brother, Troy Garrett; and one step-sister, Lela James.

Earl E. Anthony

Earl was born on March 14, 1919, in rural Tama County, Iowa to Emory and Mary Reed Anthony. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural school. On June 14, 1941, he was married to Lucille McIlrath in Lancaster, Missouri. The couple farmed near Newburg and Brooklyn before moving to a farm near Grinnell in 1950. He operated a grain and livestock farm as well as carpentry work. He retired in 1981 and moved to Raymondville, Missouri in December of 2005. Earl was a member of the Farm Bureau and he enjoyed fishing and raising horses and ponies. Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Beth and Dale Thomas of Raymondville, Missouri; son and daughter-in-law, Dale and Rose Anthony of Indianola; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and three brothers, Carl Anthony and Clifford Anthony, both of Brooklyn and Floyd Anthony of Belle Plaine. He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; and one sister, Grace Klenk.

Doris was born on April 27, 1921, south of Kellogg, Iowa on the family farm to Earl and Esther Braley Tough. She was raised near Kellogg and attended Buena Vista #1 country school near her home. She graduated from Kellogg High School with the class of 1940.

She was united in marriage to Clair Edward "Barney" Bahrenfuse on November 9, 1946, at the Pleasant View Church southwest of Kellogg. The couple farmed east of Kellogg all of their lives, where Doris was a homemaker.

She was a lifelong member of the Pleasant View Methodist Church near Kellogg, where her mother was also a lifelong member. She was a faithful member and volunteer at the Kellogg Historical Museum and was a longtime member of the Tuesday Quilters group. The couple enjoyed traveling and wintered in Plant City and Dover, Florida since the mid 1970's. She held a passion for quilting and enjoyed collecting hickory nuts and walnuts in the fall and sharing the finished product with her family and friends.

Doris is survived by her children, Robert "Barney" (Suzanne Castello) Bahrenfuse of Grinnell, Iowa and Carol (Orville) Ohm of Alden, Minnesota; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; her sister Mary Parsons of Kellogg, Iowa; and her sister-in-law Edith Lee of Riverton, Wyoming. Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Clair E. Bahrenfuse in 2004; and her brothers Robert and Donald Tough.

Memorials may be directed to the Kellogg Historical Museum, the Westfield Cemetery Association, or to the Pleasant View Methodist Church and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home.

Maurice “Mike” Keenan, 81, of Grinnell died November 22, 2006, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services for Mr. Keenan will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 25, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. John Epperson, pastor of Grinnell Christian Church, officiating. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice. The son of Thomas Patrick and Harriet Mae Watson Keenan, he was born January 11, 1925, in Grinnell. He was raised in Grinnell and received his education in the Grinnell School District. At the age of 15, he began working for the railroad and later was employed for a local camper manufacturer and as a hired hand for a local farmer. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II and served as Staff Sergeant in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre. He was awarded a Bronze Star and Combat Infantryman’s Badge for his actions on Okinawa. Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to Grinnell to make his home. He was employed at Donaldson’s in Grinnell and later Grinnell Miracle Recreation Company. While at Miracle he was in charge of the special projects division. He retired in 1985. On June 18, 1960, he was married to Colleen O’Hara, in Marshalltown. Survivors include his children, Melody Montgomery of Grinnell, David Carlson of Lynnville, Thomas Crew of Keokuk, and Michelle Sears of Grinnell; one sister, Lois Olson of Harrison, Montana; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Vincent “Denny” Keenan and Bernard Keenan.

Anna Novikova

Anna was born on June 1, 1974, in St. Petersburg, Russia, the only child of Alexander Novikov and Tatiana Budnikova. She grew up in St. Petersburg and received her education there. She graduated from the St. Petersburg State Academy of Space and Aircraft Engineering with a Masters degree. Following her education she worked as a graphic and prepress designer for several publishing houses. On June 24, 1994, she was married to Dmitriy Valerievich Shklyarov in St. Petersburg. The couple lived in St. Petersburg until they moved to Grinnell, Iowa, in October of 2001. While living in Grinnell she was a mother of two children and a homemaker. Anna was completely devoted to her children and family. She also desired to continue her work as a graphic artist in publishing later in life. Anna had a great love for life. She was always caring of people and animals and was a loving friend to all who knew her. She is survived by her husband; two children, Vasya, 6, and Alisa, 4; and her parents.

Barbara May Nowell

Barbara was born on May 11, 1917, in Kansas City, Missouri, to Charles and Lucy Burton Courtright. She grew up in Kansas City and received her education there. She also attended Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri. She was married to Jack Lammers and the couple lived in Omaha, Nebraska. In addition to being a mother and homemaker she started her own business, Barbara Lammers Personnel Service. Her business was an employment agency for women. In the early 1960s she moved to Columbia, Missouri and worked as an administrator in the Office of Development at Stephens College. Following her move to Columbia she met and married Jack Nowell and they were married for over 30 years. Following the death of her husband she moved to the Mayflower Home in Grinnell. Barbara was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational of Grinnell and attended the Sit’n Knit Club. She was an avid reader and enjoyed traveling. Survivors include her son, Jon Lammers of Kansas City, Missouri; her daughter, Kathy Tindall of Grinnell; three step children, Mary Namerow of Hyde Park, NY, John Nowell III of Columbia, MO and Faye Nowell of Columbia, MO; four grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; and one brother.

Julie was born on March 16, 1953, in Marshalltown, Iowa, to Virgil and Margaret Gary Tone. She was raised on the family farm near Gilman and attended school in Gilman. She graduated from SEMCO High School in 1971 and received a Bachelors degree from the University of Northern Iowa. After her graduation she moved to San Diego, California and worked as a social worker for troubled youth. In the early 1990s she returned to Gilman and worked for the Gilman Community Church. In June of 1991, she was married to Tim Lowe in Gilman. The couple moved to Oviedo, Florida in June of 1996. While living in Oviedo she worked for the State of Florida as a social worker for the Department of Children and Family Home Society. Survivors include her husband, Tim Lowe of Oviedo; three daughters, Chelsea Peddle and Kinsey Peddle, both of Orlando, Florida and Keely Lowe of Oviedo; one grandson, Joseph Tone of Oviedo; and her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Marilyn Tone of Long Island, NY. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Mabel M. Ziegenmeyer

Mabel was born the daughter of Myron and Florence Johnson Plum on November 26, 1919, in Grinnell, Iowa. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated with the Grinnell High School Class of 1938.

Mabel was united in marriage to Raymond Ziegenmeyer on December 24, 1941, at her parents home in Grinnell. She worked a short time at the Grinnell Shoe Company and then worked for the Iowa Telephone Company as a switchboard operator. In later years she worked as a field assessor at the Memorial Building in Grinnell.

She was a member of the United Methodist Women in Grinnell and a lifetime member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She held previous memberships with the Birthday Club, Phythian Sisters, and was a longstanding member of the Rebekah Lodge, where she served as treasurer for over thirty years. She enjoyed her recent times at the Mayflower Homes visiting with friends and sharing her love of history.

Mabel is survived by her children, James Ziegenmeyer of Marshfield, Maryland, Sandi Riemenschneider of Marshalltown, Iowa, and Carolyn Plue of Landover Hills, Maryland; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Mabel was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Raymond on August 1, 2004.

Arnold Schulte, age 94, of Grinnell, died Thursday, November 30, 2006, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center while under the care of Grinnell Regional Hospice. A funeral mass for Arnold Schulte will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 4, 2006, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell with Rev. William Reynolds officiating. Organist will be Marilyn Kriegel. Pallbearers will be Duane Bissen, Virgil Groth, Mike Hotchkin, Dr. Clark Jensen, Mel Rummelhart and Jim Slebiska. Burial will be at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorials contributions may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or to Grinnell Regional Hospice. The son of George and Mary Lohman Schulte, he was born September 5, 1912, in Emery, South Dakota. He was raised in Emery and received his education at St. Martin's Parochial School. For several years he worked on the family farm. On January 23, 1939, he was married to Mary L. Healy at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Emery. The couple lived in Seattle, where he was employed by Columbian Optical. They later moved to Grinnell and he was employed for many years as an optician with Jensen Optometrists until he retired. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, and Grinnell Elks Lodge. Arnold loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He particularly enjoyed his fishing trips to Minnesota and Canada. He held a passion for music and loved to play his violin. He played 1st violin for the Grinnell College Symphony Orchestra for two seasons. He was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed following the St. Louis Cardinals. Survivors include his wife, Mary of Grinnell; one son, James Schulte of Kentucky Lake, Kentucky; one sister, Floreine Duxbury of Salem, South Dakota; two grandchildren, Heather Durden of Plano, Texas and Christopher Schulte of Edwardsville, Illinois; and three great-grandchildren, Claire and William Durden and Megan Gayle Schulte. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Evelyn Schulte, Hilda Anonson and Alma McNaboe; and three brothers, Francis, August and Ralph Schulte.
