Grinnell, Iowa

Memorial Service: 10:00 a.m., Saturday, May 05, 2007 at First Presbyterian Church
Interment: following memorial service on Saturday, May 05, 2007 at Hazelwood Cemetery

Clio was born November 16, 1913, to Gladys and Felix Hunter in Kansas City, Missouri. After living her early years in Kansas City, Kansas, and Oklahoma City, the family, which included a sister, Phyllis, and a brother, Maurice, moved to Des Moines. Clio graduated from Lincoln High in Jan 1932. She then attended Drake University in business. Because there was just no money in those days, she attended Drake for only one year. She worked at Meredith Publishing Company for four years until she met Bill Sopher. They were married in Lancaster, Missouri, December 1936. Their first child was born in 1937 in Des Moines. The remaining five children were born in Fort Madison in 1939, 1949, 1951, and twins in 1955. Bill and Clio lived in Ft. Madison for over 60 years. Clio was a homemaker with a particular interest in creative sewing. In more recent years that interest included making flags. She was a Life Member of the North Lee County Historical Society and was in the original group that developed the museum in the old Santa Fe Depot and a member of the “weed committee” which made crafts for the annual flea market fundraiser. She remained a member of the Rebecca Pollard Study Club for intellectual stimulation and social interaction from the 1940’s to 1997. Also during that period she was a member of PEO, which sponsors scholarships to women who want to finish their education. Clio was on the Camp Fire board for 17 years and leader for all three daughters, Boy Scout den mother for all three sons, and PTA for all six children; 1979-1995 a board member as Lee County representative of SE Iowa Home Health Agency; 1985-1997 on the Nurse advisory committee for Lee County Public Health Nurses as a consumer advocate; 1980s-1997 a Hospice volunteer with her husband, Bill; 1988-1992 RSVP board member and President and volunteer until 1997; 1939-1997 member of Union Presbyterian Church, Board of Deacons for 40 years and Women and Church Circles since the 1940s. After moving to Grinnell in 1997 she became a Session member of the First Presbyterian Church for three years and a Caring Adults volunteer. Many family camping vacations from the mid 1950s to the late 1960s took the family to many National and State Parks. Life didn’t slow down after Bill’s retirement in 1976. Clio and Bill continued to camp and travel as they hit all the genealogy research spots on the way to visit their far-flung children. Clio continued to travel with children and grandchildren after Bill passed away in 2003, including a trip to Scotland. Clio and Bill moved to Grinnell in 1997 to Seeland Park to be nearer to family and lessen the burden of home maintenance, but before that move spent a good year sorting through a houseful of over 60 years of memories and accumulation. Thank you, Mom! Clio died suddenly on Thursday, April 26, 2007, in her home. She was preceded in death by her husband Bill, her parents, her sister Phyllis Ellsworth, and son-in-laws, Ed Peak and Rob Greenberg. Clio is survived by her brother Maury (Barb) Hunter of Des Moines, and six children: son Rene (Sharon) Sopher of Novi, Michigan, daughters Janis Peak and Kim (Bob) Wemer of Grinnell, daughter Vicki Sopher of Chicago, and sons Bruce (Nancy) Sopher of Columbia, South Carolina, and Barry (Merih) Sopher of Metuchen, New Jersey; eight grandchildren, David Sopher, Sara Peak (Frank) Convery, Cyd Peak, Lauren (Lance) Sutter, Hannah Sopher, Harry Sopher, Revan Sopher, Derya Sopher, great-grandchildren Robert and Paige Sutter, her nieces and nephews Bob (Wendy) Spurgin, Ann (John) Rains, Craig (Carolyn) Hunter, and Karen (Bill) Ellison, and many friends old and new. The family asks that donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Clio Sopher Memorial Fund that will be distributed by the family to various charities that Clio supported.

The daughter of Fred and Martha Carpenter Minear, she was born on September 11, 1920 in rural Livonia, Missouri. The family moved to Newburg, Iowa and she attended country schools near the family home. Following her schooling, Dorothy worked for various local families as a housekeeper and caretaker. This is how she met Earl Carl Engelbarts and they were united in marriage on June 28, 1943 in Grinnell. They made their life together on the family farm in Malcom. To this union were born six children; Gene, Bonita, Barbara, Carl, Roger and Dennis. Dorothy loved her family and truly enjoyed their close family values and ties. Dorothy especially enjoyed attending school functions of her children and grandchildren. She loved the outdoors and always kept a vegetable garden. Dorothy enjoyed flowers, roses, and birds, especially cardinals. Cooking for her family, listening to music and doing needlework kept her busy. She never knew a stranger and welcomed friends and family to their home. Dorothy is survived by her husband, Earl, of Malcom; and their children, Bonita (Bob) Martin of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Barbara (Verl) Shook of Malcom, Roger of Malcom, and Dennis (Celest) of Malcom; eight grandchildren, Wendy Martin, Christopher Young, Heather Allen, Scott Shook, Anthony, Krista, Amber and Katie Engelbarts; six great grandchildren, Eric and Cruz Casados, Jesse and Lacey Young, Dylan Carter and Joslyn Allen. She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Jettie Anderson; three brothers, Guy, Lloyd and Rex Minear; and her sons, Carl in 1987 and Gene in 2005.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Dorothy Genevieve Engelbarts Memorial Fund.
