Mildred Jane Paxson, 101, of Grinnell died May 28, 2008, at Friendship Manor Care Centre in Grinnell. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Susan Leathem-Sanning, Grinnell Regional Medical Center and Hospice Chaplain, officiating. Pallbearers will be Lauren, Deanna, Alan and Lori Paxson, Lori and Chris Sogge. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation with the family present will be held one hour prior to service time Tuesday morning at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mildred Paxson Memorial fund. The daughter of Jesse and Grace Shifflett Kingsland, she was born December 31, 1906, in Brooklyn, Iowa. She later moved with her family to Grinnell in 1908. She was a 1924 graduate of Grinnell High School and later attended Iowa School of Beauty in Des Moines. On April 11, 1932, she was married to Carl Paxson, in Grinnell and where the couple continued to make their home. She was employed for 20 years at Comfort Beauty Salon and then for 13 years as a bookkeeper at Queen & Olson Furniture Store. She later was employed in the Alumni Office at Grinnell College and retired from there in 1971. After retirement she took a course in Nurses Aid/Medical Aid and for several years worked at St. Francis Manor and then Friendship Manor. She retired again in 1978 at the age of 71. Mildred was a 63 year member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years, sang in the choir, and was active with United Methodist Women. She was a 79 year member of the Pythian Sisters serving as Most Excellent Chief and a 14 year member of Rebekah Lodge holding the office of Noble Grand. Mildred’s greatest joy was the piano. She wrote the class song for her graduating class of 1924 and also composed a Christmas song which has been played in her church. In later years, she was a member of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) Kitchen Band and MAC Chorus, performing at area nursing homes and the Iowa State Fair. She enjoyed camping and fishing, and she loved her pet dogs. Survivors include her son, Lauren (Deanna) Paxson of Montezuma; two grandchildren, Alan (Anjie) Paxson of Conrad and Lori (Chris) Sogge of Bondurant; and four great-grandchildren, Kenna and Alex Paxson of Conrad and Jorgen and Clayton Sogge of Bondurant. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1971; one brother, Marion “George” Kingsland; and one sister, Gertrude Kingsland as an infant.

Kyle was born on July 20, 1984, in Grinnell, Iowa to Wayne and Teresa Duncan LaKose. He attended school in Brooklyn and Grinnell. Following his education he worked at Pagliai’s Pizza. He enjoyed fishing, boating, listening to music, socializing with friends and spending time with his dog. He is survived by his father, Wayne LaKose of Grinnell; one sister, Keshia LaKose of Grinnell. He is also survived by his paternal grandparents, John and Grace LaKose of Brooklyn; his maternal grandparents, Ronald and Mattie Duncan of Grinnell; and his nieces, Jasmine and Shaylynn Cooper and Taylor and Emma Doty. He was preceded in death by his mother, Teresa Mackerman.

Robert L. Cook

Robert was born on April 20, 1927, in Oskaloosa, Iowa to Jay E. and Freda Nevins Cook Sr. He was raised in Oskaloosa and attended Oskaloosa High School. He also attended Central College in Pella. During World War II he served in the U.S. Navy on the USS Pt. Cruz in the South Pacific. On April 11, 1948, he was married to Betty Van Pelt in Ottumwa, Iowa. The couple lived in Oskaloosa and California before moving to Waterloo. He was a mortgage banker in Waterloo, Marshalltown and Madison, Wisconsin. From 1988 to 1992 he owned and operated the Brother’s Maid Rite in Grinnell. Robert was a member of the American Legion, and he enjoyed golfing, hunting, bowling and playing cards. He also enjoyed doing yard work and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Betty Cook of Grinnell; one daughter, Christine (Paul) Petersen of Madison, Wisconsin; two sons, Robert (Marla) Cook Jr. of Marshalltown and Dennis (Tanya) Cook of Madison, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; one cousin, Tom (Mary) Nevins of Missouri; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Fred Cook and Jay E. Cook Jr.

Kris Patrick Bricker was born the son of Dean and Verabeth Eckert Bricker on March 5, 1960, in Marengo, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm near Victor and was educated at the Conroy Developmental Center in Conroy, Iowa.

Kris was a member of the St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor. He had a wonderful sense of humor and had keen powers of observation. Kris was the central command of the Bricker household, who assisted those in need of finding what they were looking for. He enjoyed waiting for the morning mail to arrive, taking walks to see the changing seasons in the wetlands and forest on the Bricker farm. He cherished taking care of the RoadTrek van and his dog, Cody, who he called his son. Kris will be greatly missed by the many lives he touched.

Kris is survived by his mother, Verabeth Bricker of Victor; his brothers, Terry (Sandy) Bricker of Grand Island, Nebraska, Larry (Toni) Bricker of Marion, Iowa, David Bricker of Victor, Kurt (Deb) Bricker of Ladora, Iowa; his sister, Denise Bricker of Victor; and his special caregivers, Anna Upah and Beth Henning. Kris was preceded in death by his father, Dean Bricker on October 4, 2002; his maternal and paternal grandparents; and his aunts, Darlene Sayers and Betty Woodrum.

Lawrence W. (Larry) Pinder, 50, of Grinnell died suddenly Wednesday, September 3, 2008, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A memorial gathering will be held Wednesday, September 10, at 5 p.m. in the Grinnell High School Auditorium with fellowship following in the main gym. Interment will take place at a later date. Memorials may be made to the Grinnell High School Speech Program or the Grinnell High School Athletic Booster Club. He was born December 25, 1957, in Grinnell, the son of Albert J. and Dorothy W. Pinder. He was a 1976 graduate of Grinnell High School and a 1980 graduate of Grinnell College, where he developed an interest in theater, particularly improvisational theater. Following his graduation, he practiced the art of standup comedy and professional improvisational theater in Minneapolis, graduation, he practiced the art of standup comedy and professional improvisational theater in Minneapolis, Minn.; Chicago, IL.; New York, N.Y.; and Los Angeles, CA. In 1988 he joined the staff of the Grinnell Herald-Register as newswriter and sports editor. He also continued his interest in theater, coaching students in improvisational theater at Grinnell College and Grinnell High School. In 1997 he was named a managing editor of the Herald-Register. He worked tirelessly at the Herald-Register, and was deeply committed to his family and much loved by his family, his students and the community. He is survived by his parents; one brother, Joe Pinder of Washington, D.C.; four sisters, Peggy Elliott and Martha Jane Pinder of Grinnell; Jeanne Pinder of Pelham, N.Y., and Anne Pinder of Madrid, Spain; two nieces , Juno and Phoebe Pinder of Pelham, and several cousins and many friends.

Rose Anna Sadie Shull was born the daughter of Charles and Mary Meyer Haman on March 14, 1907, in Genoe Bluff, Iowa. She was raised in Genoe Bluff and attended country schools in Sumner Township.

Rose was united in marriage to Leslie Shull on December 24, 1926, in Montezuma, Iowa. To this union were born their children Karl, Kathryn and Richard. The couple resided in Genoe Bluff before moving to Marengo, Iowa and then to Ladora in 1933. The couple operated a gas station in Ladora for several years.

Rose was a member of the Christian Fellowship Group. Her enjoyments included crocheting, quilting, and gardening.

Rose is survived by her children, Kathryn (Marvin) Davis of Ladora, and Richard (Cindy) Shull of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; 5 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Rose was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leslie Shull in 1999; her son, Karl Shull in 2006; her grandson, Dennis Davis in 2006; her brothers, John, George, Henry, Lawrence, Carrol; and her sisters, Martha Wyant, Clara Hawkins, Mabel Van Blaircom, and Alma Weaver.

Memorials may be designated to the Anna Shull Memorial Fund to benefit organizations of the family's choice.

Peggy was born on May 10, 1914, in Leighton, Iowa to Dr. J.J. and Adelaide Black Sybenga. She received a teaching degree from Central College in Pella, Iowa and taught in the Dunlap School District for three years. On September 4, 1937, she was married to Lawrence G. Keeney at Pella. The couple made their home in Grinnell, where she was a homemaker and he was CEO of Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company from 1944 to 1975. They moved to Gull Lake in Minnesota and returned to Grinnell in 1983. Peggy was a member of the United Church of Christ-Congregational in Grinnell, Pi Rho Lambda, the Sit and Knit Club and the Garden Club in Brainerd, Minnesota. She was a 60-year member of PEO. While living in Grinnell she was involved in community and school activities and she enjoyed music, film, needlework, reading books and politics. Life on Gull Lake allowed her to follow a love of nature and time to purse knowledge in the treatment and cure of diabetes. She is survived by three daughters, Martha (Robert) Heddens of Park City, Utah, Cynthia Cronn of Papillion, Nebraska and Mary Mowers of Beliot, Wisconsin; five grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1984; and one son-in-law, Michael Mowers.

Forrest Young

Frosty earned the Distinguished Flying Cross while serving as a fighter pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II. He served first in the Aleutian Islands before supporting the D-Day Invasion into France. In November of 1944, his Spitfire plane was shot down and he spent the last six months of the war in a POW camp in Germany.

Frosty is survived by his children, Robert (Louise) Young of Savage, MN, Richard (Robin) Young of Grinnell, and Lori (Jeff) Young of San Francisco, CA; 3 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

Karen was born on February 7, 1942, in Des Moines, Iowa to Marvin and Clarice Nelson Henry. She was raised in Des Moines and graduated from Lincoln High School. She received a nursing degree from the Iowa Lutheran School of Nursing. On November 14, 1969, she was married to Robert Choate in Des Moines. The couple lived in Des Moines and Davenport before moving to Grinnell in 1973. While living in Grinnell she worked as a nurse at Friendship Manor, St. Francis Manor and the Mayflower Health Center. She also taught continuing education classes for nurses. Karen was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and she enjoyed playing bridge and needle work. Survivors include her two daughters, Laura Choate of Fairview Heights, Illinois and Connie Choate of Deep River; one brother, Carl Henry of Des Moines; and two sisters, Marilyn Vicker and Virginia Mickelson, both of Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Marvin Henry Jr.; and one sister, Carmen Brackett.

Eylene was born on February 20, 1917, on the family farm near Lynnville, Iowa to Fred and Alverta Sparks Ratliff. She attended the Junction School and later graduated from Lynnville High School. On December 27, 1936, she was married to Leonard Dale Brush in Sully, Iowa. Eylene and Dale farmed in the Lynnville area and they had lived on their present farm since 1957. Following Dale’s death in 2000 she moved into Lynnville and later to Windsor Manor in Grinnell. Eylene was a member of the First Friends Church of Lynnville and she enjoyed gardening and refinishing and collecting antique furniture. She also enjoyed accompanying Dale to horse shows and 4-H projects. Survivors include one sister, Nadine Ratcliff of Pella; one nephew; and three nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one brother, Dale Ratliff; and one sister, Mary Wagaman.

Marion Vogel, 45, of Denver, Colorado and formerly of Grinnell died suddenly Sunday, September 14, 2008, at his home. Services and burial at Westfield Cemetery, southwest of Grinnell, are pending at this time. Marion was born October 22, 1962, in Grinnell the son of Marion Vincent “Stanley” and Donna Lee See Vogel. He was raised in the Rock Creek Lake area and was a 1981 graduate of Grinnell High School. He later was a 1983 graduate of Marshalltown Community College. He worked in Iowa, Missouri, and Kansas and most recently Colorado as a mechanic and carpenter. Marion was a great wood craftsman and auto mechanic who lived his life to the fullest. He loved motorcycles and the open road. “No moss grew under his feet!” While living in Missouri he belonged to the Christian Church and had a great faith in God. Survivors include his parents, Gean and Donna Tiedemann of Kellogg; one brother, Clayton (Lisa) Tiedemann of Grinnell; one sister, Tammy (Chad) Means of Kellogg; his nephew and niece, Thaddeus and Halee Means of Kellogg; his grandparents, Clayton and Wannetta Tiedemann of Sarcoxie, Missouri, several aunts and uncles, Jody and Rich Phipps of Kellogg, Greg and Barb Tiedemann of Lake St. Louis, Missouri, and Joyce and Harold Ingles of Palo; a cousin, Shane (Nancy) Phipps of Carlsbad, New Mexico; three children, Jennifer, Steven, and Aubry Vogel; and his extended Rock Creek family. He was preceded in death by his dad, Stanley Vogel; grandparents, Marion and Lucille “Peg” See; and his great grandmother, Emma Pagel.

Thelma Minear, 94, of Grinnell died September 19, 2008, at Friendship Manor Care Center in Grinnell. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 23, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Michael Minear, John Pattschull, Jeff Babcook, Lani Leichty, Stan Hawk, Marty Minear, and Greg Minear. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 7:30 Monday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Thelma Minear Burial Fund. The daughter of Manford L. and Dona Demry Noel, she was born September 14, 1914, in Unionville, Missouri. She was raised in Unionville and was a 1932 graduate of Unionville High School. On February 24, 1934, Thelma was married to Loyd W. Minear, in Lancaster, Missouri. The couple lived in Unionville and Kansas City, Kansas prior to moving to Grinnell in 1947. While in Unionville she was employed as an operator with a telephone company and then for several years she worked at Grinnell College. She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and was active with United Methodist Women and a church circle group. Thelma enjoyed spending time with her family, reading, and visiting with family and friends. Survivors include one daughter, Donna (Gary) Pattschull of Newton; one son, Jerry (Donna) Minear of Waukee; her daughter-in-law, Betty Jo “Jake” Minear of Grinnell; one sister, Mary Novak of Grinnell; nine grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Ronald Minear; and one granddaughter, Lori Reimers.

Terry R. Ulrey

Terry was born the son of Richard and Jean Benson Ulrey on May 13, 1966, in Newton, Iowa. He was raised in Newton, Grinnell, and Montezuma, and graduated from Montezuma High School with the class of 1986.

He enlisted in the United States Navy following his education in February of 1987 and was stationed at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Chicago, Illinois. He was later medically discharged. He returned to Montezuma to assist his father with his electric business, Ulrey Electric. The last few years he has been employed at West Street Recycling. He was united in marriage to Rhonda Crane on December 3, 1988, in Grinnell. To this union were born their children, Rebecca and Mary. Their marriage later ended in divorce. Terry was united in marriage to Donna Lemke on February 21, 2004 at the Westfield Church near Grinnell.

Terry was an outdoorsman and enjoyed bicycling, fishing and camping with his family and friends. He had a passion for gold prospecting with his father. He and his father would prospect for gold on the Iowa River and as far away as Atlanta, Georgia. He was a fan of the Iowa Hawkeyes and enjoyed watching NASCAR racing on television. He was looking forward to being a grandfather in January.

Terry is survived by his wife, Donna Ulrey of Newburg; his daughters, Rebecca Haring of Oskaloosa, Iowa, and Mary Ulrey of Oskaloosa, Iowa; his mother, Jean Ulrey of Grinnell; his stepdaughters, Heather Burch of Grinnell, and Tracy Lemke of Marshalltown, Iowa; his sister-in-law, Cindi Ulrey of Dover, New Hampshire; 2 nephews, Michael and Danny Ulrey of Dover, New Hampshire; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Terry was preceded in death by his father, Richard Ulrey; his brother, Randy Ulrey; his maternal and paternal grandparents; and his granddaughter, Casey Marie Haring, who died in infancy.

Edward was born on October 7, 1921, in Detroit, Michigan to Edward and Genevieve Carroll Sinclair. He was raised in Detroit and graduated from high school there. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Air Corp in the Rhineland and various parts of Europe. After the war he returned to Detroit and worked for Ford Motor Company. In 1958, he moved to California and worked for the Turf-Vac Company. From 1968 to 1994 he was employed as an Engineer for the McDonald-Douglass Corporation in Long Beach, California. Following his retirement he lived in Philo, Ohio and later in Marengo. He had moved to Grinnell, Iowa in August of 2008. He was married to Beth Kummer on September 7, 1990 in San Bernadino, California. Survivors include his wife, Beth Sinclair of Grinnell; three sons, Ed Sinclair of Portland, Oregon, Carl Sinclair of Cypress, California and Ted Sinclair of Phoenix, AZ; one daughter, Rae Anne Schneider of Vancouver, Washington; two step-sons, Steve Acheson of Fullerton, CA and Mike Acheson of Rancho Cuchamonga, California; two step-daughters, Joyce Davis of Grinnell and Angela Hurst of Brooklyn; several grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, William Sinclair.
