Robert Zelsdorf

Robert Thomas "Tom" Zelsdorf, 73, of Burlington, died at 5:37 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Visitation will begin at 8 a.m. Monday at Hass Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends after a 6:30 p.m. Christian wake service until 8:30 p.m. The Mass of the resurrection for Mr. Zelsdorf will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Hyland officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery , with full military honors conducted by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162 and American Legion Post 52.
Memorials have been established for the American Diabetes Association and Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Ruth Mercer

Ruth Mary Mercer, 86, of West Point Care Center in West Point, died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, 2001, at Fort Madison Community Hospital in Fort Madison. She had been in failing health for several years.

Born April 16, 1915, in Fort Madison, she was the daughter of Joseph and Karlene Grossenkemper Arthur. She married John Emil "Jack" Mercer Sr. on Oct. 14, 1939, in Fort Madison.
Mrs. Mercer was a homemaker and was a Red Cross-trained aide at the former Sacred Heart Hospital in Fort Madison. She also cared for individuals at Fort Madison Health Center. She was a lifelong resident of the Fort Madison area and a member of Sacred Heart Church, Altar & Rosary Society and St. Jude's League. She loved her family unconditionally.

Survivors include two sons, John E. Mercer Jr. of Burlington and Michael A. Mercer Sr. of Wever; three daughters, Karlene A. Robertson of Middle Amana, Sharon K. Fisher of Burlington and Karen S. Rockhold of Fort Madison; 14 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, four brothers and two nephews.

Visitation will begin at noon Sunday at King-Lynk Funeral Home in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. and a wake service will be at 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Mercer will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Sacred Heart Church, with the Rev. Tim Sheedy officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Fort Madison.

A memorial has been established for St. Jude's League. Contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Treasure Waltman

Treasure O. Waltman, 81, of Keokuk died Thursday evening, Feb. 3, 2005, at her home. Arrangements are pending at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk.

SHERRI F. JOY GERST

Funeral Services for Sherri F. Joy Gerst, 44, of Burlington who died on Sunday, February 6, 2005, at her home will be held in Prugh's Chapel on Thursday, February 10, 2005, at 10:30 A.M. Rev. Robert Adams will officiate. Interment will be in Ferrell Cemetery in New London, Iowa. The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel this evening between the hours of 6:00 and 8:00 P.M. A memorial has been established in memory of Sherri F. Joy Gerst.

RAYMOND K. PEARSON

Funeral Services for Mr. Raymond K. Pearson, 93, of Burlington who died on Sunday, February 6, 2005, at Great River Medical Center, Klein Center will be held in the First United Methodist Church on Friday, February 11, 2005, at 10:00 A.M. Rev. Dr. Dennis Tevis will officiate. Interment with full graveside military rites conducted by VFW Post 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League and AmVets Post 52 will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 1:00 P.M. this afternoon in Prugh's Chapel until 8:00 P.M. On Thursday, friends may call after 8:00 A.M. with the family receiving friends from 7:00 until 9:00 A.M. A memorial has been established for the First United Methodist Church.

Janis Haas

Janis L. Haas, 56, of Burlington, died at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Feb. 22, 1948, in Bur–lington, she was the daughter of Warren F. and Dorothy L. Roseberry Gerdom. On Sept. 17, 1977, she married Edward M. Haas in Oquawka, Ill.

Mrs. Haas was a homemaker.

She was a 1966 graduate of Burlington High School. She loved bowling, camping, fishing, animals and flowers.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Shane Womack of Temple, Texas; one daughter, Christine Fowler of Davenport; her mother of Burlington; one stepson, Allen Haas of Tulsa, Okla.; one stepdaughter, Beth Ann Gibson of Tulsa; six grandchildren; one brother, Fred Gerdom of Lomax, Ill.; aunts, uncles, cousins and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Friday at Hass–Thielen Funeral Home. There will be no family visitation.

The funeral for Mrs. Haas will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Hass–Thielen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Tyrone C. Henderson officiating. Burial will be in Burlington Memorial Park Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

JoAnn Dunne

The funeral service for Mrs. JoAnn Dunne, 60, who died Thursday, February 14, 2002, will be today at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel. Rev. Milo Van Veldhuizen will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 8:00 AM until the time of service. A memorial has been established for the Diabetes Association.

Callie Starbuck

The funeral service for Miss Callie Mae Starbuck, 92, who died Friday, February 15, 2002, will be today at 1:00 PM in Lunning Chapel. Rev. Kirk Bennett will officiate. Interment will be in Harmony Grove Cemetery , rural Gorin, Missouri. Friends may call after 8:00 AM until the time of service. A memorial has been established.

Loyd E. Dietsch

The funeral service for Mr. Loyd E. Dietsch, 66, who died Saturday, February 16, 2002, will be Wednesday, February 20th, at 1:30 PM in Lunning Chapel. Rev. Tyrone Henderson will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 8:00 AM today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 PM. A memorial has been established.

Deloris A. Crees

The funeral service for Mrs. Deloris A. Crees, 67, who died Saturday, February 16, 2002, will be Wednesday, February 20th, at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel. Rev. William Hornback will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 8:00 AM today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 PM until 8:00 PM. A memorial has been established.

Christian A. Benson

The graveside funeral service for Christian Aristotle Benson, who was born still Saturday, February 16, 2002, will be today at 1:00 PM in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Pastor Terry Vance will officiate. The family will be available to meet family and friends at the home of Kim and Tony Danielson (Tim's sister and brother–in–law), 3144 Oakland Dells Drive, Burlington, located off of Sunnyside. Turn onto Yoder, then turn on Oakland Dells Drive.

Madge Gapen

The funeral arrangements for Mrs. Madge Gapen, who died Saturday, February 16, 2002, are pending in Lunning Chapel.

Beatrice A. Richardson

The funeral service for Mrs. Beatrice Anna Richardson, 86, who died Monday, February 18, 2002, will be Thursday, February 21st, at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel. Rev. Richard Purcell will officiate. Interment will be in Burlington Memorial Cemetery . Friends may call after 11:00 AM on Wednesday, February 20th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 PM. A memorial has been established for Asbury United Methodist Church.

Richard Tucker

Richard Kennedy Tucker, 89, of Mansfield, Mass., formerly of Fort Madison, died Saturday, March 5, 2005, at his home.

Born Jan. 2, 1916, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Nathan J. and Edith Kennedy Tucker. On Nov. 26, 1938, he married Jeanne M. Crowley in Davenport.

Mr. Tucker was the former copy editor and reporter for the Indianapolis News, a reporter for the Baltimore Evening and was a war correspondent for the Baltimore Sun paper in 1950, an editor for school periodicals and the Xerox Education Publications in Middletown, Conn.

He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ in Fort Madison. He was a World War II Army veteran, serving in the Pacific as infantry correspondent and press officer. He was the author of "The Dragon and the Cross," a history of the Ku Klux Klan in the Midwest in the 1920s. He retired to Fort Madison and later moved to Massachusetts.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Michael Tucker and Robert Tucker, both of Phoenix; one daughter, Katherine Falcon of Sharon, Mass.; three grandchildren; and two great–grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister.

Visitation may be one hour prior to the time of service today at St. John's United Church of Christ.

The funeral for Mr. Tucker will be at 11 a.m. today at St. John's United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Rob Robinson officiating. A private family burial will be Friday in Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison.

A memorial has been established for the new Fort Madison Public Library fund.

Wendell Pirtle

Wendell Dale Pirtle, 82, of SunnyBrook Assisted Living in Fairfield, died at 10:48 p.m. Sunday, April 3, 2005, at Jefferson County Hospital in Fairfield.

Born May 12, 1922, in Bloomfield, he was the son of William Floyd and Fauntella E. Nichols Pirtle. On Aug. 6, 1944, he married Mary Frances Altman in Packwood. She died Oct. 4, 1994.

Mr. Pirtle and his wife owned and operated the Packwood Grocery Store for two years and he also owned Pirtle Cabinet Shop and built custom cabinetry for many years. He worked on Line 1 at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, the nuclear energy line, from 1958 until the line closed in 1974. He then transferred to the Rock Island Arsenal, where he worked until he retired in December 1982.

He was a graduate of Davis County High School in Bloomfield and attended Iowa State University for one year before enlisting in the Air Force. He was a World War II Air Force veteran, serving as a B–24 bomber pilot. He flew many overseas missions including over Normandy on D–Day. He was a flight instructor in Waco, Texas, after his tour of duty and served in the Air Force Reserves for a number of years.

He was a member of First Christian Church in Packwood and the 52 Club of Packwood. His hobbies included woodworking, rock hunting and arrowhead hunting and raising Irish setters with his daughter. He also enjoyed traveling.

Survivors include one daughter, Anita Ann Pirtle Loving of Fairfield; two granddaughters; one nephew; and two nieces.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, one infant brother and one infant son.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Behner Funeral Home in Fairfield.

The funeral for Mr. Pirtle will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Behner Funeral Home, with the Rev. Harlan "Frosty" Van Voorst officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield.

Memorials have been established for SunnyBrook Assisted Living and First Christian Church in Packwood.

Shirley Andries

Shirley W. Andries, 74, of rural Danville died Thursday morning, April 14, 2005, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Born May 11, 1930, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Emmet F. and M. Ruth Boyd McDowell. On May 10, 1950, she married Lawrence A. Andries in Nashua.

Mrs. Andries worked for many years at the Danville Care Center, first as a nurse's aide and later as the activity director.

She was a 1948 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School. She was a member of Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church in New London. She loved her home and family and enjoyed gardening, flowers and watching birds.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Cheryl Willson of Danville; one grandson; three sisters, Gwendolyn Hawkins of Moulton, Gretchen "Susie" Liechty of Mount Pleasant and Linda Smyth of New London; and two brothers, B. Richard McDowell of Lockridge and J. Bradley McDowell of Mount Pleasant.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. today at Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Andries will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church, with the Rev. Robert Watkins officiating. Burial will be in Shinar Church Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Shinar Cumberland Presbyterian Church.
