Rod W. Baltisberger, 38, of Malcom, died Saturday, September 27, 2008 of injuries sustained in an ATV accident near his home. Visitation will be held Thursday, October 2, 2008 with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, October 3, 2008, at Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with burial immediately following at Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom. The son of Jack E. and Janis K. Suess Baltisberger, Rod was born November 12, 1969, in Grinnell. He was raised on a farm near Malcom and was a 1988 graduate of Montezuma High School. After graduation, Rod worked at several welding/fabrication companies before going to work in 1992 with his father at Baltisberger Carpentry. Rod shared his father’s attention to detail and craftsmanship and had a reputation for being a perfectionist on the job. Rod loved music and attending concerts throughout the Midwest. He enjoyed spending time with his dogs, Bandit and Tuddy, riding his mountain bike, and muddin’ in his truck. Rod loved living loud and living large, he had a big, big heart and was very caring to his family and friends. Survivors include his mother, Janis Baltisberger of Newton; two brothers, Ben (Paula) Baltisberger of Newton and Brian Baltisberger of Grinnell; one sister, Rebecca (Blake) Anderson of Keystone; five nieces and nephews, Shamus, Resa and Clayton Baltisberger of Newton and Aleah and Kane Delk of Grinnell; his grandmother, Gladys Baltisberger of Grinnell; his step-mother, Kathy Baltisberger of Malcom; one step-sister, Robin (Joe) Rios of Des Moines, two step-brothers, Jared Boisen of Montezuma and Scott Boisen of Ames; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Jack, and grandparents Ronald Baltisberger and George and Juanita Suess. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Rod Baltisberger Memorial Fund.

Willie was born on January 8, 1916, on the family farm in Pleasant Township near Malcom to Charles and Myrtle Gruhn Morrison. He attended rural school and Malcom Public School. During World War II he attended Iowa Aircraft School in Des Moines and after graduation he lived in California. On January 2, 1943, he was married to Lorene Pearce at her parent’s home in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and he worked for J.W. Norris transporting fuel and later farmed near Malcom. Besides farming he was a building contractor, manager of the Malcom Co-op Lumber Yard, and was the insurance adjustor for Poweshiek Mutual for 20 years. Following his retirement he was a sales representative for Western Associates. He and Lorene celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in January of 2008. Willie enjoyed socializing with friends and family and fishing. He was a member of the Grinnell Christian Church. Survivors include his wife, Lorene of Grinnell; one daughter Rebecca (Gary) Downey of Grinnell; three sons, Terry (Sonja) Morrison of Grinnell, Jack (Jackie) Morrison of Grinnell and Thomas Morrison of Jefferson City, MO; seven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; one brother, Lavern Morrison of Grinnell; and one sister, Darlene Hull of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, William R. Morrison Jr; and one sister, Marjorie Morrison.

Bill was born on June 25, 1933, in Grinnell, Iowa to Charles M. and Nell Cooper Manly. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1951. He attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas and later graduated from the University of Iowa College of Law. He practiced law in Phoenix, Arizona and later was involved with a land development company in Texas. After his health failed he returned to Grinnell in the 1990s. Bill was an avid reader and a member of the Republican Party. Survivors include one brother, C.M. Manly II of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Carter Manly; one daughter, Jennifer Manly; one sister, Mary Bea Letts; and two brothers, John C. Manly and Robert C. Manly

Shirley was born on May 29, 1932, in Stahl Township, Putnum County, Missouri to Ernest and Cassie May Lawrence. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from rural school. Following the death of her father and brother she assisted her mother with raising her siblings and working summers in Grinnell. On January 11, 1953, she was married to Warner Steele in Milan, Missouri. The couple made their home in Grinnell and became the parents of two children, Terry and Cheri. She worked for Grinnell College, the Grinnell Shoe Company, Ritter’s Hardware Store, the White Spot, and McCammant’s Antique Store. She also assisted her husband as a bookkeeper for the family landscaping business. Shirley was a member of the Church of Christ and she enjoyed gardening, canning, cooking, needle work and reading. She was an avid writer and her writings were published in several periodicals. She was extremely proud of her poetry and won several awards. Survivors include one son, Terry Steele of Grinnell; one daughter, Cheri (John) Robson of Grinnell; four granddaughters, Tawny Monteleone, Tyné (Bryan) Rieck, Tiffini Steele and Alexis Steele; daughter-in-law, Mary Steele of Grinnell; three sisters, Annabelle Novinger of Novinger, Missouri, Phyllis Sitton of Grinnell and Charlotte (Elmer) Van Egdom of Montour; and one brother, Jerry (Betty) Lawrence of Kansas City, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two brothers, Ernest “Bud” and Rodney Lawrence; and three sisters, Janet See, Pansy Willingham and Loetta See

Debbie Breeden, 49, of Newburg, died November 20, 2008, at her home. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, November 24, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Pam Flanigan, pastor of the Kellogg United Methodist Church and Pleasant View United Methodist Church near Kellogg, officiating. Pallbearers will be Christopher, Corey, Nathan, and Zach Gifford, Jared and Marty Breeden, and J.J. Wiley. Honorary bearers will be nieces and nephews. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, rural Jasper County. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and where the family will be present from 2:00 to 4:00 Sunday afternoon. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Debbie Breeden Memorial Fund. Debbie was born January 27, 1959, in Grinnell, the daughter of Clinton and Arlene Sharp Gifford. She was raised near Kellogg and was a 1977 graduate of Newton High School. Following her education she was employed for several years at G.T.E. On August 4, 1979, she was married to Kevin Breeden, at the Pleasant View United Methodist Church near Kellogg. While Kevin served in the United States Air Force the couple lived in South Dakota, Germany, and Florida. They moved to Kellogg in 1986 prior to settling in Newburg in 1987. Debbie was employed at Food 4 Less in Grinnell for 8 years and later for Subway in Grinnell where she was an assistant manager. For the last 3 years she managed the Subway south of Grinnell near I-80. Debbie loved her animals and enjoyed caring for them. She enjoyed collecting figurines, coffee mugs, steins, and nutcrackers. She also enjoyed flower gardening, traveling, and shopping for crafts. She loved the Christmas Holiday season and shopping at the Disney Store. She was an avid Johnny Bench and Cincinnati Reds baseball fan. Survivors include her husband, Kevin of Newburg; her parents, Clinton and Arlene Gifford of Kellogg; three brothers Clinton “Biff” (Teresa) Gifford, Jr. of Kellogg, Kevin Gifford of Newton, and Curtis (Cheryl) Gifford of Des Moines; and many nieces and nephews.

Margaret was born on June 23, 1919, in LaFlech, Saskatchewan, Canada to Leonard and Margaret Wright Truman. The family moved to Iowa and she graduated from Grundy Center High School with the Class of 1937. She received a teaching certificate from Iowa Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls. After her education she taught in rural schools near Grundy Center and Montezuma. On December 25, 1945, she was married to Ray Al. Thompson in Lancaster, Missouri. She worked as a bookkeeper for Bohstedt Real Estate Company and later for the Department of Human Services. She retired in 1991. Margaret was a member of the Grinnell Christian Church, the Order of Eastern Star, the White Shrine of Newton, the VFW, Past President of the American Legion Auxiliary, and Past Noble Grand of the Rebekah Lodge in Grinnell. She enjoyed needle work and socializing with friends. Survivors include one daughter, Louann Heinle of Laurel, Iowa; three sons, Kenneth R. Thompson of Laurel, Delbert Thompson of Dothan, Alabama and William J. Thompson of Newton; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Lyle Truman.

Memorials may be directed to the Grinnell Christian Church. The family will receive relatives and friends for lunch at the Grinnell Christian Church following the service at Hazelwood Cemetery.

Marie Turlouw, 82, of Grinnell and formerly of rural Sully, died November 26, 2008, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, November 29, at the Lynnville Friends Church. Vocalist will be Eileen Smiley. Burial will be in the Sully Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to Lynnville Friends Church, Grinnell Regional Hospice, or St. Francis Manor. Marie was born October 21, 1926, on the family farm in Jasper County, near Sully, the daughter of Henry and Alice Nikkel Terlouw. She attended Sudlow Country School near her home. After her education she worked at home and helped raise her siblings following the death of her mother in 1939. She formerly worked at the Des Moines Rubber Stamp, Dunlap Manufacturing in Newton, and retired as a health care aid with the Department of Human Services Jasper County, where she made favorable impressions with co-workers and clients. In her retirement she participated in the Grinnell Farmer’s Market for several years with her nephews Doug and Dennis Terlouw. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and attending community events. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed selling her produce at the Farmer’s Market. She especially enjoyed family gatherings and spending time with her nieces and nephews and many close cousins. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Newton. Marie lived in rural Sully most of her life and moved to St. Francis Manor in 2007. Survivors include three brothers, Gerritt Terlouw, Henry “Hank” (Mary Grace) Terlouw, and Bob Terlouw, all of Grinnell, one sister, Jennie Terlouw of Grinnell; two sisters-in-law, Donna Terlouw of Lynnville and Lois Vander Schel of Pella; many nieces and nephews; several great and great-great nieces and nephews; and many close cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James and Ollie Terlouw; and a sister-in-law, Ella Mae (Mrs. Bob) Terlouw.

Albert Eugene Martinson

He was born on September 25, 1921, in Grinnell, Iowa to Albert and Letha Barrett Martinson. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High with the Class of 1939. Immediately following Pearl Harbor, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, and from 1942-45 served in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. On April 4, 1946, he married his high school sweetheart, Maxine “Rosie” Onthank in Grinnell. The couple raised two children, Mike and Kathy. Gene worked for Ritter’s Maytag and Sporting Goods Store on Main Street and many Grinnell residents knew him as their Maytag repairman. In the 1970’s he became employed by the city as manager of Hazelwood Cemetery. For over thirty years the Martinson’s hosted friends and family on Sunday mornings at their home where Beanie was famous for his homemade cinnamon rolls. After retirement the couple maintained a mobile home for vacationing near Dorchester, Iowa and spent many happy years trout fishing with friends and family. Survivors include one son, Mike Martinson of Arlington, Virginia; and one daughter, Kathy Martinson of Austin, Texas. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and three brothers, Bob, Joe and Louis Martinson.

James “Joe” Pierce 85, of Grinnell died November 29, 2008, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. A funeral mass will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 3, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell, with the Rev. Nick Adam officiating. The Rev.’s Walt and John Claussen will be eulogists. Marilyn Kriegel will be organist and Mark Dunnick vocalist. Pallbearers will be Jessica Pierce, Erica Kelderman, Leslie Nehring, Myra Hangartner, Aaron Walker, Michael Hangartner, and Adam Walker. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening. A scripture service will be held 6:30 p.m. Tuesday evening at the Smith Funeral Home. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Kellogg Historical Society. Joe was born November 18, 1923, in Grinnell, the son of Robert and Addie Reavis Pierce. He was raised in Grinnell and was a 1941 graduate of Grinnell High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Force during World War II having served with the 8th Air Force, 303rd Bomb Group in Molesworth, England. He was a ball turret gunner on a B-17 and was a member of the Caterpillar Club for having to bail out of his bomber safley during a mission. On January 1, 1950, he was married to Mary Patricia Hotchkin, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church Rectory in Grinnell. The couple made their home in Grinnell. He was employed for nearly 22 years as a meat cutter at McNallys Grocery Store. He then was employed for 6 years at Grinnell College and retired from there in 1989. During his retirement he enjoyed working as a greenskeeper at Grinnell Country Club. Joe was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Newburg American Legion, and the Grinnell VFW, where he was acting commander. He was an avid sports fan and particularly enjoyed following the Iowa Hawkeyes. He enjoyed traveling and his many trips to Branson, the Black Hills, and family vacations to visit family members in other states. Joe was always hard-working and yet fun loving. He enjoyed a good joke, liked to tease, and make people smile. He loved his family dearly. Survivors include his wife, Pat of Grinnell; four children, Mary Jo (Randy) Hangartner of Decorah, Dawna Elliott of Grinnell, Jim (Bev) Pierce of Kellogg, and Terri (Jeff) Walker of Des Moines, seven grandchildren, Jessica Pierce, Erica Kelderman, Leslie Nehring, Myra and Michael Hangartner, and Aaron and Adam Walker; three great-grandchildren, Kylie Kelderman, and Kameron and Aurora Nehring; and two sisters, Mae Graham and Ruth Dunnick, both of Grinnell. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Floyd and Francis Pierce; and two sisters, Pauline Claussen and Patty Barron.

LaDean Joyce Webb

LaDean was born on May 12, 1931, on the family farm near Victor, Iowa to Clark and Pearl Mohr Schafbuch. She was raised on the family farm and attended rural schools. On June 25, 1955, she was married to Howard Lee Webb at the Ohio Church near Ladora. The couple farmed for over 20 years near Ladora. They later moved to Ladora and she worked as a nurse’s aid at Grinnell General Hospital and as a secretary for the President of the Iowa Manufacturing Company in Cedar Rapids. Following the death of her husband in 1999 she moved to West Branch to live with her daughter, Ellen DeMeulenaere. LaDean was a member of the Ohio Methodist Church and served as the church organist for many years. She enjoyed music and solving puzzles. Survivors include one son, Douglas H. Webb of Dayton, Indiana; three daughters, Janet L. Webb of Ashville, NC, Ellen J. DeMeulenaere of Iowa City, and Lisa (Tom) A. Boland of Columbia, Missouri; four grandchildren, Thomas (Katy) DeMeulenaere and Megan DeMeulenaere, both of Iowa City and Lucas Boland and Kaitlyn Boland, both of Columbia, Missouri; and one brother, Larry (Marilyn) Schafbuch of Victor. She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.

The family will receive relatives and friends for lunch in the hall of the United Methodist Church in Victor following the funeral service.

Melvin Louis Sieck

Melvin Louis Sieck was born on February 9, 1926, the son of Louis F. and Josephine Kriegel Sieck on the family farm in Tama County. He attended rural schools and then helped on the farm. Melvin started truck driving and later, he owned and operated Sieck Trucking. On October 12, 1945, he married Audrey Wells and they had three children; Karen, Diana and Melvin Jr. The couple later divorced. Melvin married Pauline McDonald on July 27, 1963 and they had two sons; Randy and Rodney. Melvin enjoyed working on the farm and on his truck. He liked to go camping and fishing and always loved spending time with the grandkids. He died on Tuesday, December 2, 2008 at the Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines. Melvin is survived by his children; Karen (Dale) Reitzler of Polo, Missouri, Diana (Greg) Risbeck of Chariton, Iowa, Randy (Tammy) Sieck of Ireton, Iowa and Rodney (Kimberly) Sieck of Grinnell, Iowa, twelve grandchildren, ten great grandchildren and his brothers; Lloyd (Shirley) Sieck of Grinnell, Iowa, Wayne (Saundra) Sieck of Amarillo, Texas and Ronnie (Margaret) Sieck of Grinnell, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Pauline, on April 6, 2007, his son Melvin Louis, Jr., who died in infancy, and one brother, Paul Sieck.

Gary was born on October 26, 1935, in Waterloo, Iowa to Willis and Blanche Barnes Parmenter. He was raised in Gilman and graduated from Gilman High School with the Class of 1953. He worked in various jobs in Gilman and Minnesota following high school. On March 25, 1961, he was married to Beverly Hamilton in New Sharon, Iowa. The couple lived in Gilman for a few years and moved to Grinnell in 1964. Gary owned and operated the Parmenter Building and Remodeling Company until his retirement in 1995. He also worked in the building and grounds department at St. Francis Manor. He enjoyed hunting, trap shooting and was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan. Survivors include his wife, Beverly Parmenter of Grinnell; one son, Mark (Lisa Jepson) Parmenter of Hiawatha, Iowa; and two grandsons, Wesley A. Sebetka IV and Noah H. Sebetka, both of Tama; one niece, Barb Weber; and two nephews, Jim and Richard Ireland. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Jill Sebetka; and one sister, Jean Ireland.

Memorials may be directed to the Gary Parmenter Memorial Fund and may be sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.

Interment: following memorial service December 13, 2008 at Prairie View Cemetery, Gilman

Agnes Wiseman 93, of Columbus, Nebraska and formerly of Gilman, died Wednesday, December 10, 2008, at the Golden Living Center in Columbus. A memorial service will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 13, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Mr. Ron Rice of the Gilman Methodist Church officiating. Pianist will be Barb Chitwood. Burial will be in the Prairie View Cemetery in Gilman. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Gilman Methodist Church or Gilman Public Library. The daughter of Lewis and Leslie Paul Koger, Agnes was born November 10, 1915, in Poweshiek County, near Newburg. She was a 1933 graduate of Newburg High School. On February 22, 1936, she was married to Herbert Wiseman, in Newburg. The couple lived and farmed in the Gilman Community and in their later years, they spent their winters in Florida and then in Mesa, Arizona. She was a member of the Gilman Methodist Church and the Yuesday Progress Club. Agnes enjoyed doing crafts, knitting, crocheting, and made many beautiful afghans. She was an excellent seamstress and had made many of her daughter’s clothing. Survivors include one daughter, Janice (Mrs. Bud) Arment of Columbus, Nebraska; four grandchildren, Kelley Hart of Los Angeles, Brent Arment of Polk City, Ken Arment of Millard, Nebraska, and Jason Arment of Moville; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Gretchen Locker of Grinnell and Dorothy Wiseman of Gilman; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Herbert.
