Evelyn was born on December 24, 1958, in Grinnell, Iowa to Russell and Mary Andersen Brown. She was raised in Grinnell and attended Grinnell schools. On December 4, 1975, she was married to Ron Williams in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and she provided a child care service and housekeeping services. She also worked at MICA, Prairie Meadows, WENCO, and was recently a seamstress at Rock Creek Sportswear Company in Grinnell. Evelyn enjoyed crafts, needle work, shopping and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Survivors include two sons, Jeremy R. Williams of Newton and Timothy D. Brown of Grinnell; one daughter, Jennifer N. Williams of Grinnell; four grandchildren; her mother, Mary Moffitt of Grinnell; two brothers, Ed Brown of Malcom and Paul Brown of Kellogg; and two sisters, Christine Brown and Elizabeth Tuttle, both of Grinnell. She was preceded in death by her father and one grandson, Jeramiah Taylor.

Mary Grace Terlouw

Mary Grace Terlouw, 83, of Grinnell died December 14, 2008, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. Funeral services have been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 18, at the Lynnville Friends Church with the Rev. Doug Smiley officiating. Organist will be Bernice Smith, pianist will be Lori Terlouw, and vocalist will be Curt Braaksma. Pallbearers will be Doug, Dennis, and Kevin Terlouw, Jason Allbee, Blake Korns, and Dwight Ver Steegt. Burial will be in the Sully Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Lynnville Friends Church or Lynnville Library. Mary Grace was born November 4, 1925, on the family farm, in Jasper County, near Sully, Iowa, to Guysbert and Gertrude (Van Arkel) Van Wyk. She attended Dairy Grove Country School near her home. During World War II, she was employed at the Kellogg Factory and then at the Sully Café. On February 20, 1948, she was married to Henry J. Terlouw, in Sully, Iowa, a union of 60 years. The couple farmed in the Bethel Community, rural Jasper County, where she was a homemaker and farm wife throughout her life. She was an active member of the Lynnville Friends Church and enjoyed church events and activities such as Primary Department Superintendent, Senior Citizens, and the church quilting group. Mary Grace loved her life on the farm and enjoyed the outdoors and nature. She especially enjoyed her walks through their farm pastures and at their pond, gardening and canning her produce, and crocheting afghans. Most importantly, she loved family gatherings and spending time with her granddaughters and great-grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Henry J. Terlouw of rural Grinnell; two daughters, Ronda (Arvin) Lanser and Rashele (Phil) Nikkel, all of Sully; four granddaughters, Dawn (Jason) Allbee of Sully, Trisha (Blake) Korns of Pella, and Andrea and Shannon Nikkel, both of Sully; four great-grandchildren, Derik and Logan Allbee of Sully and Olivia and Andrew Korns of Pella; one brother, David (Edith) Van Wyk of Grinnell; one sister, Fayeola (Gerrit) Stouwie of Pella; two brothers-in-law, Gerritt and Bob Terlouw, both of Grinnell; and five sisters-in-law, Tunnet Van Wyk of Otley, Nellie Van Wyk of Pella, Jennie Terlouw of Grinnell, Donna Terlouw of Lynnville, and Lois Vander Schel of Pella. She was preceded in death by her parents; five brothers, Will, Cornie, Henry, Bert, and Marion Van Wyk; and six sisters, Carrie Braaksma, Mattie DeHoedt, Minie Ver Steegt, Gertie Ver Steegt, Alenis Brush, and Jennetta Antle.

Fred Stanley, 84, of Grinnell died December 12, 2008, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A graveside service has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 27, at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell with the Rev. Robert Cook, Mercy Medical Center Chaplain, officiating. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Fred Stanley Memorial Fund. Fred was born August 15, 1924, in Poweshiek County, the son of Orville and Lucy Ferno Stanley. He was raised in the Grinnell area and received his education in the Grinnell School District. On August 18, 1958, he was married to Elna Smith, in Newton. The couple lived in Newton before returning to Grinnell in 1996. While in Newton he was employed for many years with Maytag. He was a member of the UAW 997 and enjoyed fishing. Survivors include his wife, Elna of Grinnell; one brother, John Stanley of California; one sister-in-law, Mary Cook of Montezuma; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charlie and Clair Stanley; and five sisters, Rachel Evans, Charlene Carmer, Christina Stanly, Barbara Bell, and Grace Stanley.

Gene was born on July 10, 1941, in Wausau, Wisconsin to Isadore and Nina Plisch Zell. He was raised in Wausau and graduated from high school in Wausau. Following his education he served with the U.S. Army. He worked as an engineer for General Telephone Company in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin. On September 13, 1980, he was married to Dorothy (Dee Dee) Duckert in Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. The couple lived in Bloomington, Illinois and in 1987 they moved to Grinnell, Iowa. He retired from General Telephone in 1993. Following his retirement he worked in the Grinnell area as a carpenter with Tom Fitzgerald. Most recently he managed the Poweshiek County Veteran Affairs Office in Grinnell. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grinnell, the Eagles Lodge and the American Legion. Gene enjoyed bowling, golf, fishing, hunting, playing cards. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan and Wisconsin Badger fan. Survivors include his wife, Dee Dee Zell of Grinnell; one son, Todd Zell of Grinnell; and one daughter, Tonya (Sammy) Kuntz of Brooklyn. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Arnold Frederick Tanke Sr.

Arnold was born on July 10, 1930, near Deep River, Iowa to William and Marie Koehn Tanke Sr. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural school. He assisted his family with farm duties and later worked for area farmers. During the Korean Conflict he served with the U.S. Army and received two bronze stars for his service to our country in Korea. On February 16, 1958, he was married to Dorothy Schultz in Deep River. The couple lived in the Deep River area where he farmed and worked for the rail road. He also worked for grain elevators in Guernsey and Brooklyn and prior to his retirement he was an attendant at the Meskwaki Casino near Tama. Arnold enjoyed fishing, gardening, dartball, playing black jack and spending time with his grandchildren. He is survived by his four sons, Mark (Diane) Tanke of Toledo, Ronnie (Kim) Tanke of Williamsburg, Marvin (Laurie) Tanke of Guernsey and Arnold Tanke Jr. of Williamsburg; two daughters, Ruth (Don) Tanke of Princeton, IL and Rose (Bill) Cooper of Gibson; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; one brother, William “Bill” Tanke of Deep River; and two sisters, Elaine Bates and Imogene Pierce, both of Keswick. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Leland Tanke.

The daughter of Guy and Mabel Hoagland Cooper, Eloise was born June 23, 1922, on the family farm, north of Rock Creek, in Jasper County, Iowa. She attended country school near her home. On April 26, 1941, Eloise was married to Robert Earl Otto, in Waurika, Oklahoma and the couple made their home in Grinnell. For several years she and her husband operated the Yum Yum shop and later she was employed at Spurgeons, George and Rolf Hardware Store, and for many years at Zimmerman’s True Value. She also worked at Grahams and Doty’s Clothing stores and at the Mayflower Community. Eloise was a long-time member of the Calvary Baptist Church where she was active in several women’s groups, but her main focus was in missionary work. She was very devoted to her family and her grandchildren were all very special to her. She loved her home where she always made you feel welcomed and was grateful to have company. She was a person of detail and had worked hard all her life. Scripture and prayer were both very important to her. Survivors include three children, Steve (Ramona)Otto of Santa Monica, California, Kathleen McCune of Des Moines, and Mark (Joyce) Otto of Grinnell; one brother, Burton (Ann) Cooper of Magalia, California; two sisters, Ruby (Bob) Teed and Loretta Burrell, all of Grinnell; five grandchildren, Melissa (Jeff) Clayton of Des Moines, Emily (Craig) Bahnsen of Des Moines, Megan (Eric) Caves of Minneapolis, Colton Otto of North Liberty, and Bethany Otto of Grinnell; and three great-grandchildren, Devyn Caves, William Clayton, and baby Greta Bahnsen. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and two brothers, Don and Kenny Cooper.

David was born on October 27, 1982, in Des Moines, Iowa to Daniel and Edna Bunn Wadhams. He was raised in California and Oregon and before the family settled in Montezuma. He attended Montezuma schools and graduated from Montezuma High School with the Class of 2001. He lived in Malcom, Grinnell, Newton and Cedar Rapids. He was never able to work because of a disability. David enjoyed playing video games, fishing for catfish, reading and the WWE. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cub fan. He is survived by his father, Daniel Wadhams of Malcom; his mother, Edna Bond of Newton; and three brothers, Daniel Wadhams of Des Moines, Eric Wadhams of Malcom and Evan Wadhams of Marengo.

Irene Phyllis Blair

Irene Blair, 87, of Grinnell, died January 9, 2009, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center. A memorial service has been scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Friday, January 16, at the Grinnell United Methodist Church with the Rev. Len Eberhart, pastor of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, Rev. G.W. Wilson, son-in-law, from Elkridge, Maryland, and Rev. Raymond Lott, retired, officiating. Burial will be held at a later date at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell United Methodist Church. Irene was born July 29, 1921, in Jefferson, Iowa, the daughter of Edward and Jesta Julia Reese Shockey. She was raised in Jefferson and received her education there. On November 14, 1942, she was married to Earl Dean Blair, in Chillicothe, Missouri. While Earl served in the Army Air Corps, the couple lived on several military bases where she was employed at local dime stores. They later lived in Grand Junction, Iowa, Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and Jefferson, Iowa prior to moving to Grinnell in 1962. For many years they wintered in Texas and occasionally Arizona. The couple has been a part of the Mayflower Community since 1997. Irene was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, Order of Eastern Star, Just-A-Mer Club, and many bridge clubs. She enjoyed flower gardening, playing cards, traveling (including to all 50 states), and most importantly raising her family. She took great pride in loving all of her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Earl of Grinnell; five children, Sandra (Chuck) Brooke of Grinnell, Jean (G.W.) Wilson of Elkridge, Maryland, Jane Gearhart of Conrad, Gary Blair of Johnston, and Mart Blair of Titusville, Florida; ten grandchildren; and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Edward, Raymond, Donald, and Jerold Shockey; and three sisters, Dorothy Hennessey, Katherine Hanover, and Mildred Stangl.

Everett Glen Williamson

Everett was born on November 21, 1924, on the family farm north of Hartwick. He attended rural school and graduated in 1943 from Hartwick High School, where he participated in basketball and baseball. Everett met Alice Kochuyt at a dance in Chelsea on Valentine’s Day in 1947. The couple was married on August 26, 1948 in Victor. They operated a grain and livestock farm east of Hartwick for 55 years. He also was a substitute school bus driver and hauled grain for local farmers. Everett was a member of the former Hartwick Congregational Church, the Hartwick Union Cemetery Board of Trustees and he was a former trustee of Jefferson Township. He enjoyed camping, socializing with friends and life on the farm. Survivors include his wife, Alice Williamson of Belle Plaine; one brother, Donald (Elaine) Williamson of Atkins; and three sisters, Mary Ann Roth of Brooklyn, Irene Criswell of Newton and Linda Davis of Ladora; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Diana L. Pagel

Diana was born the daughter of Clifford and Betty Arbs Thompson on October 26, 1946, in Grinnell, Iowa. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1964.

She was a member of the Grinnell Christian Church. She was employed at Iowa Telecom as a repair technician for several years. She was a very thoughtful and caring person that always put her family first. She enjoyed being outdoors, whether it was tending to her horses, golfing, fishing, or camping. Her other enjoyments included painting, bowling, watching Jeff Gordon on television, and having her two dogs, Gracie and Hoover, by her side.

Diana is survived by her husband, Roy Rupe of Grinnell; her daughter, Jamey Pagel of Grinnell; two grand-daughters, Heather and Holly Cashwell of Grinnell; a great granddaughter, Peyton Lynn of Grinnell; her father, Clifford Thompson of Grinnell; her sister, Kathi (Mike) Sawyer of Ankeny, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her mother; and a husband, Merle “Bud” Pagel.

Memorials may be directed to the Diana L. Pagel Memorial Fund to benefit organizations of the family’s choice. The family wishes to acknowledge with deep appreciation the many expressions of love, concern and kindness shown to them during this hour of bereavement.

Dean I. Dufoe

Dean was born on June 5, 1931, to Floyd E. and Katie E. Neirtert Dufoe in Iowa City, Iowa. He attended and graduated from Buck Creek High School with the class of 1949. On October 9, 1954, he married Janette Lennox in Coggon, Iowa. From this union, Duane, Robin, Dwight, Douglas and Doran were born. The couple later divorced. He worked for the City of Grinnell at the Waste Water Treatment Plant and always called in the weather for the city to KGRN. He was a long time member of the Izaak Walton League. Dean was an avid Chicago Cubs and Hawkeye fan. He even broke his foot yelling at the Hawks! He loved fishing, mushroom hunting, picking raspberries and being outdoors. He always had a joke of the day, with the latest being the famous “380” story. His greatest love was his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Surviving him are his five children; Duane D. (Mitzi) Dufoe of Grinnell, Robin (Dean) Wilson of Genoa, Wisconsin, Dwight (Laura) Dufoe of Grinnell, Douglas (Tammy) Dufoe of Grinnell and Doran (Tammy) Dufoe of Independence, Iowa, thirteen grandchildren; Stacey, Nick, Rebecca, Vickie, Val (Matt Post), Kyle, LaRae (Corey Arment), Brandon, Nathan, Daniel, Adam, Derek and Courtney and seven great grandchildren; Lydia, Ayden, Mason, Natalie, Kiya, Justin and Nova Lee, one brother; Earl Dufoe of Cedar Rapids and one sister; Margaret Ann Shean of St. Louis, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sisters; Virginia Peebles, Ione Hemming, and his brothers; Wayne, Glen “Chip”, Howard, Doran and his twin Gene.

Karen was born the daughter of Elmer Rusk and Kathleen “Kutch” Squires Rusk on April 29, 1940 in Belle Plaine, Iowa. She was raised in Belle Plaine and graduated from Belle Plaine High School with the class of 1958. She was united in marriage to Terry Van Sickle and to this union their daughter Heidi was born. Following the death of her husband, she moved back to Belle Plaine to be closer to her family. She was employed at Benco Manufacturing in Belle Plaine for many years.

Karen’s family was her life and she dearly loved her grandchildren. Her enjoyments included making crafts at the nursing home, playing cards and board games, and solving crossword puzzles.

Karen is survived by her daughter, Heidi (Eric) Van Buren of Victor, Iowa; her grandchildren, Terra, Saxon, Bailey, and Nate Van Buren; her sister, Marcia McDonald of West Branch, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her siblings, Carol Walton and Lyle Rusk; and a nephew, Brad Busher.

Jack L. Douglas

Jack was born on August 5, 1948, in Grinnell, Iowa, to Glen and Neola Hudson Douglas. He was raised in Gilman, Brooklyn and Grinnell. He attended public schools and graduated from Grinnell High School. Following his education he worked for Saunder’s D-X Station. In 1977, he began his career as a custodian in the Grinnell-Newburg School System and worked at the Middle School.

He was a member of the Grinnell Elks Lodge and the Grinnell Eagles Lodge. His hobbies included gardening, fishing, cooking and camping. He was also an avid fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

Survivors include his two brothers, Robbie Douglas of Grinnell and Sam (Donna) Keup of Danville, IL; one nephew, Michael (Chanda) Keup; two nieces, Annette Baxter and Sarah (Yancy) Trovar; and several great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials may be directed to the Grinnell Middle School for the purchase of a memorial tree and a picnic table.

Darrell Edward White, Jr.
September 11, 1944 - May 01, 2010
Kellogg, Iowa

Darrell E White, JR was born on September 11, 1944 to Darrell White, Sr and Edna Julius in Cherokee, Iowa. Darrell graduated from Washington High School in Cherokee in 1963. On May 07, 1992, he married Carolyn McCracken and they have been married ever since. Darrell is survived by his loving wife Carolyn; son Richard White and his two sons Spencer and Mitchell; son James White and his wife Carol and son Noah; son Robert White and his wife Jennifer, daughter Rumer and son Jager; stepson Kirt McCracken and his wife Patricia and son Tyler; stepdaughter Krisanne Hawse and her son Jalen.

For the first part of his career, Darrell spent 37 years at Fareway Grocery Stores: the last seventeen of those years as store manager at several different locations in Iowa. After what most would consider being a lifetime career at Fareway, he embarked on a new career centered on his love of flying. He began flying in 1986 while still with Fareway and quickly earned his VFR, IFR and ultimately instructor certification. In 1997 he became the Grinnell Airport Manager. While there he managed the airport business activities, gave flying lessons to those seeking VFR and IFR certification and rented planes. After losing his medical certification which affectively ended his time as a pilot, he turned to aircraft repair forming Iowa City Aircraft Repair with Keith Roof. He worked there until his retirement.

He retired in 2006 and he and Carolyn began to travel throughout the US. They would winter in the south and summer back in Iowa.

Darrell passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, May 01, 2010 at his home in Kellogg, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and brother Keith White. He is survived by a brother Roger of Liberty, MO, sister Patti of Sioux City, IA and Jean of Cherokee, IA.
