Merle was born on April 8, 1939, near Victor, Iowa to William and Elsie Weisskopf Smith. He attended Victor schools and graduated with the Class of 1957 from Victor High School. On June 26, 1960, he was married to Connie Johnson at St. James Lutheran Church in Victor. The couple owned and operated a grain and livestock farm southeast of Victor.

He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Marengo and enjoyed fishing as a hobby.

Survivors include his wife, Connie Smith of Victor; two sons, Neal (Paula) Smith of Brooklyn and Dave Smith of North English; three grandchildren, Jon, Caitlin and Jack Smith; and his mother-in-law, Darlene Smith of Marengo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Eugene Smith.

Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or to St. John’s Lutheran Church of Marengo.

Larry D. Shook

Larry was born on June 8, 1962 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, to Kenneth and Joyce Howard Shook. That winter, the family moved to Grinnell, Iowa, where he attended and graduated high school.

Larry married Dawn Bogue on June 24, 1989 and from this union, Crystal Marie Shook was born. They later divorced. He worked at Certainteed, Godfather’s and finally found his place at Jeld-Wen. Even through the cancer, Larry would continue to work, get his chemotherapy and go back to work. He was a man that had incredible inner strength and never complained.

He held a great passion for skateboarding and bicycling. His collection of skateboards is overwhelming. He went on several trips with his fellow cyclists to Texas, New Mexico and Colorado. He participated in RAGBRAI on numerous occasions. Larry had a dry sense of humor and a unique personality. He was young at heart and he will always be remembered that way.

Larry is survived by his daughter, Crystal Shook of Chicago, Illinois; his parents, Kenneth and Joyce Shook of Grinnell; his brother, Ron Shook of Grinnell; niece, Kali Shook and nephew, Kendell Mikkelson. He was preceded in death by his sister, Susan Harvey.

Memorials may be directed to the Larry Dean Shook Memorial Fund.

Earl Reedy

Earl was born on September 16, 1929, in Malcom, Iowa to Earl Leona Stensend Reedy. He was raised in Malcom and graduated from Malcom High School with the Class of 1947. Earl honorably served in the United States Navy during the Korean Conflict and was discharged in 1954. He was the recipient of the Domain of the Golden Dragon and the Honorary Order of Arctic Adventurers. Following his service in the military, he worked as a grocery store manager for two years and then began at 35 year career as a postal worker at the Grinnell Post Office. He was married to Barbara Faye Lincoln on April 10, 1955 at the First Baptist Church in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell until moving to Mukwonago in 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Norman Reedy; and one sister, Patty Reedy.

He was a life member of the Fraternal Order of Elks, having been a member for 54 years. He served as P.E.R, secretary and treasurer for the local lodge, and as Vice President of the Southeast District of the Iowa Elks, and Past D.D.G.E.R. of the national level of the Elks.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara; one son, David (Brenda) Reedy of Ankeny; one daughter, Susan (Ron) Amero of Mukwonago; five grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and one sister, Carmen Wiebold of Grinnell.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Norman Reedy; and one sister, Patty Reedy.

Memorials may be directed to the National Elks Foundation.

Roma Verlene Dobbins

Roma Dobbins, 87, of Grinnell died May 24, 2010, at Mayflower Community Health Care Center. A memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Thursday, May 27, in the garden terrace of the Mayflower Community. Burial will be held at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mayflower Community.

Roma was born November 28, 1922, in Barnard, Missouri, the daughter of Ernest and Rosena Flanagan Walden. She was a graduate of Horace Mann High School in Maryville, Missouri.

On December 20, 1941, she was married to Edward R. Dobbins, in Maryville. The couple farmed on the family farm near Barnard for many years and later moved to Grinnell in 1996. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Maryville and the Rosanna Chapter #262 Order of Eastern Star in Maryville.

Roma enjoyed her life on the farm and took great pride in their farming practices. She held a playful, youthful personality throughout her life and was blessed with a wonderful sense of humor. She enjoyed her time with her grandchildren and loved to play cards.

Survivors include two children, Linda (Robert) Knierim of Grinnell and Raymond Dobbins of Phnom Penh, Cambodia; five grandchildren, Steve (Ann) Knierim of Cedar Rapids, Stephani (Kevin) Johnson of West Des Moines, Angela (Andrew) Flowers of Downers Grove, Illinois, Tara May of Jackson Mississippi, and Lana Dobbins of Phnom Penh; and six great-grandchildren, Gus and Max Johnson, Tyler and Caitlin Knierim, and Ryan and Dylan Flowers. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1997; and four brothers and sisters.

Mike Brady

Mike was born the son of Robert and Norma Munn Brady on April 9, 1947 in Des Moines, Iowa. He was raised in Carlisle, Iowa, Knoxville, Iowa and Akeley, Minnesota. He graduated from Akeley High School with the class of 1965. Following his education, Mike moved back to Iowa and lived in Knoxville and Chariton respectively. He worked as a mold setter for Maytag in Newton, Iowa for 33 years until his retirement in 1999. During a labor strike while employed at Maytag he worked for a construction company that was building the mile-long bridge near Knoxville. Mike was a member of the local United Auto Workers Union #957 of Newton for many years.

Mike was an outdoorsman who loved boating, fishing, mushroom hunting, traveling, bird watching, and taking pictures of nature. He was also a very good cook and enjoyed preparing the holiday meals for his family. He dearly loved his family and his dog Pedro.

Mike is survived by his wife Phyllis Brady of Searsboro; his step-children, Bob Roach, Leslie Christianson and Brian Roach, all of Chariton, Iowa, Jessica Clementi of Grinnell and Kris Clementi of Des Moines, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; his brother, David Brady of Des Moines; and his sister, Debbie Simmons of Mountain Home, Arkansas. Mike was preceded in death by his parents; and his son, Shawn Brady in 1991.

Bessie Bailey

Bessie was born on December 8, 1934, in Montezuma, Iowa to Russell and Winifred Rivers Schmidt. She attended schools in Searsboro and Lynnville before graduating from Montezuma High School.

On March 7, 1953, she was married to Roger D. Bailey in Grinnell. The couple lived in Grinnell and she worked as a sales clerk at Jerry’s ByLo Grocery Store and Walmart.

Survivors include her daughter, Cindy (Kelly) Asay of Eugene, Oregon; three sons, Roger Wayne Bailey, Loren Bailey and Eric (Mary Jo)Bailey, all of Grinnell; 13 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and two brothers, Harold Schmidt of Grinnell and Russell Schmidt Jr. of Coggan, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one brother, Henry Schmidt.

Memorials may be directed to the Bessie Bailey Memorial Fund.

C.J. McCurry

C.J. “Duke’ McCurry, 86, of Grinnell died May 27, 2010, at his home. Memorial services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 2 at the First Friends Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Todd Follette officiating. Organist will be Kathy Vanderploeg. Burial will be held at a later date at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Grinnell First Friends Church or to Quaker Heights in Eldora, Iowa.

Duke was born May 8, 1924, in Grinnell, the son of Fred Hayse and Emma Mae Lincoln McCurry. He was raised in Grinnell and was a 1941 graduate of Grinnell High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army during World War II serving in the European Theater. He fought in battles in the Rhineland, Central Europe, and the Ardennes-Alsace and was decorated with 3 Bronze Stars and the Purple Heart with Oak-Leaf Cluster. He was a P.O.W. towards the end of the war and “walked to freedom” on May 8, 1945.

On July 26, 1942, he was united in marriage to Mary “Lee” Thompson in Kirksville, Missouri. The couple lived in Grinnell where he attended Grinnell College and was employed with several businesses in the area. He began his career with GTE in 1958 and was employed in several communities in Iowa, Nebraska, and Missouri specializing in customer services. At the time of his retirement in 1987 he was vice-president of the Missouri Telephone Association and then later moved to Grinnell. He was past commander of the Grinnell American Legion, a life member of the V.F.W and Grinnell Elks Lodge, past president of the Cole County Extension in Jefferson City, Missouri, a former member of the Advisory Counsel for Extension at the University of Missouri, a member and past president of the Rotary Club in Columbus, Nebraska, and Columbia and Jefferson City, Missouri, and a former president of the P.T.A. middle school in Columbus. He was a track official for 20 years at the University of Missouri and attended the 1972 Olympics in Germany with a group of U.S.A. track officials.

During his retirement years in Grinnell he was well known for his volunteer efforts throughout the community. He enjoyed his daily routine of sharing a cup of coffee with his friends, exercising, volunteer work, and visiting with residents at several nursing homes. He was a Good Samaritan. He was an avid fan of the St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Cubs, and enjoyed watching college football and keeping up with all the local sporting events. He also enjoyed his trips to MLB spring training in Florida.

Survivors include his wife of Grinnell; two children, Kenneth L. McCurry and Cynthia Lee Rose of Grinnell; two grandchildren, Jennifer Ann Rose of Portland, Oregon and Susan Marie Rose of Marion; one great-grandchild, Nathaniel Rose of Portland; and one brother, Jerry McCurry of Knoxville. He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Gene McCurry; and one sister, Evelyn Sheeler.

Jeff was born the son of Donald and Rose Bahr McAdam on July 1, 1963 in Marengo, Iowa. He was raised in Colorado Springs, Colorado and he graduated from Wasson High School in Colorado Springs with the class of 1981. Following his education, Jeff moved to Victor, Iowa. He has worked as an over-the-road truck driver, for MPC Newspapers in Marengo, Victor Manufacturing, and most recently for LME Cleaning Services as a rest area maintenance worker. He also owned and operated Jeff’s Taxidermy with his business slogan reading “Memories That Live Forever.” His love of taxidermy was inspired by his uncle, Del Bahr, from Fredricksburg, VA.

Jeff’s family, friends and his faith were his life. Jeff was united in marriage to Kristen Hanselman on November 21, 2004 at the St. James Lutheran Church in Victor. He held a special love for his three children. He was an outdoorsman and he loved to fish and hunt. He was a lifetime member of the National Taxidermists Association and the Iowa Taxidermists Association, and he competed at the Iowa show yearly since 1998, where he won numerous awards. He also took pride in the local community of Victor, where he supported HLV school events, coached soccer and t-ball, and was a devoted member of the Victor Baptist Church.

Jeff is survived by his wife Kristen McAdam of Victor; three children, Josh McAdam of Floris, Iowa, Vanadee McAdam of Victor, and Jerica McAdam of Floris; his mother Rose McAdam of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and his brother Tim (Jeanne) McAdam of Fairfax, Iowa. Jeff was preceded in death by his father Donald McAdam in 1968; his paternal grandparents Lee and Lois McAdam; his maternal grandparents Ralph and Nina Bahr; his cousin Todd Bahr; and his father-in-law Vernon Hanselman.

David Palmer, 67, of Grinnell died June 2, 2010, at Friendship Manor in Grinnell. A memorial service will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, June 5, at the First Friends Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Ron Bryan of Oskaloosa officiating. Organist will be Kathy VanderPloeg. Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery near Grinnell. Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 Friday evening at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell. Memorial contributions may be directed to Camp Quaker Heights in Eldora.

David was born October 30, 1942, in Grinnell, the son of William Kenneth and Bessie “Betty” Whitaker Palmer. He was raised in Grinnell and received his education in the Grinnell School District.

David worked on the family farm for many years and also as a veterinarian assistant at the Grinnell Livestock Exchange. For over 20 years he was a night watchman at Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company.

He was an avid baseball fan and particularly enjoyed following the New York Yankees. Through his passion for baseball he had traveled to many stadiums in the Midwest to watch a game. He loved his family and enjoyed visiting with people.

Survivors include two brothers, Dr. Dennis (Vicki) Palmer of Aledo, Illinois, and Tom (Jan) Palmer of Oskaloosa; a brother-in-law, Delvin (Erma) Coppinger of Oskaloosa; seven nieces and nephews, Douglas (Romy) Coppinger, Denise (Randall) Nichols, Sidney (Jon) Hill, and Katy, Lindsay, Whitney, and Erica Palmer; and four great-nieces and nephews, Jared, Hannah and Emma Nichols, and Reece Coppinger. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Ann Coppinger.

Marvin was born on June 12, 1926 on the family farm south of Victor to George and Rose Marie Eggert Brandt. He was raised on the family farm and attended rural school.

On May 12, 1945, he was married to Lucille Robinson in Norway, Iowa. The couple operated a grain and livestock farm south of Victor. He enjoyed spending time with his family, watching Lawrence Welk programs and going for walks.

Survivors include his four children, Ronald (Roxanne) Brandt of Mason, Ohio, Richard (Diane) Brandt of Strawberry Point, IA, Dan (Goldie) Brandt of Belle Plaine, IA and David Brandt of Prairie Du Chien, WS.; 11 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and one sister, Mildred Marie Buscher.

A memorial fund in his name will be established.
