Bill “Brickie” Innis, 70, of Grinnell died June 5, 2010, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. A funeral service will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 9, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Ian Draegert officiating. Honorary bearers will be Mark, Bud, Robert, and Kenneth Innis, Christopher Weant, Skyler Hass, Jacob Boots, and Chris Sutluff. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday and where the family will be present from 5:00 to 8:00 Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the Bill Innis Memorial Fund.

Bill was born July 27, 1939, in Grinnell, the son of Russell Eugene and Florene Alva Swearingen Innis. He was raised in Marshalltown and attended school in the Marshalltown School District.

On December 12, 1959, he was united in marriage to Sally Jo Renaud, at the Northside Friends Church in Grinnell. The couple made their home in Grinnell and he was employed as masonry for several construction companies including, Gethmann, Stewart, Seedorf, and Jensen. He also did a lot of independent brick work in the Grinnell area. He retired in 2005.

Bill was a member of the Grinnell Go-Getters CB Club. He enjoyed hunting as a youth, socializing with family and friends, and playing cribbage and cards. He enjoyed watching western movies and was a fan of John Wayne and Richard Boone. He loved his cats.

Survivors include two children, Mark Innis and Lisa Ross, both of Grinnell, three sisters, Doretta Costello of Teaneck, New Jersey, Mary “Bess” Draegeret of Grinnell, and Ruth Kirby of Newburg; three brothers, Bud Innis of Marshalltown, Robert Innis of Barnes City, and Kenneth Innis of Havelock, North Carolina; four grandchildren, Johanna and Sarah Hass, Melissa Ingle, and Christopher Weant; and two great-grandchildren, Skyler Hass and Jacob Boots. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; one daughter, Mary Hass; and one sister, Hazel Draegert.

Delores was born the daughter of Francis “Eugene” Cook and Florence Eliza Thompson on February 10, 1923, in Muscatine, Iowa. She was raised and educated in Muscatine.

She was united in marriage to Walter Wendell Terrell on April 7, 1951 in Rock Island, Illinois. The couple was blessed with five children, Wendell, Clifford, Sandra, Yvonne and Brent. The family moved to Grinnell in 1953. They owned a local barber shop for many years and Delores was a homemaker.

Delores dearly loved her grandchildren. Her family described her as being strong-willed, opinionated, and self-sufficient. Her enjoyments included playing bingo, reading mystery and love story books, and crocheting, in which she made a blanket for each of her grandchildren. She held a special love for her companion Yorkshire Terrier “Impy.”

Delores is survived by her children, Wendell (Joann) Terrell of Eddyville, Iowa, Clifford (Janet) Terrell of Knoxville, Iowa, Sandra (Jim) Van Draska of Grinnell, Yvonne “Bonnie” Harvey of Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Brent (Jenny) Terrell of Indianola, Iowa; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Delores passed away Tuesday, June 8, 2010 at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. She was 87 years of age and she was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Wendell in 1995; and her brothers, Dwayne, Forrest, Beverly and Douglas Cook.

Dorothy Fyfe

Dorothy was born on June 8, 1930, in Talas, Turkey to Paul and Harriet Blanchard Nilson, who were missionaries of the United Church of Christ.

In 1951, she graduated from Wheaton College in Wheaton, Illinois with a degree in Latin. She was married to James Fyfe in Talas, Turkey on June 23, 1952. The couple moved to Chicago in 1954 and James entered the seminary. The family moved to Winneconne, WI in 1958 and Dorothy worked in many different capacities supporting her husband’s ministry in a Presbyterian Church. The family moved back to Turkey in 1962 and she taught in a private school in Iskenderun, Turkey. The family returned to the United States in 1966 and they lived in Auburn and Montrose, Iowa. Dorothy was a mother to four sons and continued to support her husband’s ministry in the Presbyterian Church. In 1981, Dorothy completed her Master’s degree in Audiology from the University of Iowa. She worked as an Audiologist in New Mexico and Keokuk before joining the McFarland Clinic in Ames in 1988. Dorothy was a volunteer for the Ames Public Library and the Worldly Goods Store. She was also engaged in a writer’s club in Ames. She retired in 1997 and the couple moved to the Mayflower Community in Grinnell in 2006. While living in Grinnell, she was an active member of the Mayflower Poetry Club and the Iowa Poetry Association.

She is survived by her husband; James Fyfe of Grinnell; four sons, John Fyfe of Tinley Park, IL, Paul Fyfe of Albuquerque, NM, Tim Fyfe of Clear Lake, IA and Stephen Fyfe of Pella, IA; 13 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; one brother, Paul Nilson; and two sisters, May Inscoe and Sylvia Meyer.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and she died on her 80th birthday.

Memorials may be directed to the Mayflower Human Needs Fund.

Dorothy Downey, 91, of Grinnell, died June 10, 2010, at the Mayflower Community Health Care Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 14, at the Trinity Lutheran Church near Grinnell with Trish Decker, interim pastor, officiating. Organist will be Teresa Ziegenmeyer, guitarist/soloist Mike Gross, and Shane Gross soloist. Pallbearers will be Jeff Downey, Gary Downey II, Tracy Stevens, Brian Wilson, Tammy Keigan, and Michael Ederer. Honorary bearers will be Samuel and Christopher Downey, Scott Jack, Kimberlea Harvey, Tricia Kincaid, Lisa Rathman, Timothy, Laura, Teresa and Jason Ederer, Willis Gross, Faye Loftin, Dean Downey, Shirley Hanssen, Paul and Juanita Ahrens, and Bob and Doris VanderLeest. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 3:00 to 5:00 Sunday afternoon. Memorial contributions may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church Altar Guild.

Dorothy was born February 1, 1919, in Malcom, Iowa, the daughter of Harlan and Evalyn Puls Gross. She was raised in the Malcom area and was a 1937 graduate of Malcom High School.

On June 12, 1940, she was united in marriage to Keith L. Downey, at the Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple farmed in Poweshiek County for many years and later moved to Grinnell in 1983.

She was a life-long member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Trinity Lutheran Altar Guild, and the Trinity Lutheran Women’s Circle. She enjoyed traveling, fishing, gardening and flower arranging, and bird watching. She loved sharing her time with her family, attending church activities, playing cards, and going on walks.

Survivors include six children, Charles (Jeana) Downey of Bettendorf, Gary (Rebecca) Downey of Grinnell, Vicki (Keith) Jack of Montezuma, Becky (Denny) Wilson of Kellogg, Mary (Reg) Wells of Grinnell, and Patsy (Fred) Ederer of Prairie Du Sac, Wisconsin; one sister, Faye Loftin of Grinnell; one brother, Willis Gross of Placentia, California; 18 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1984; and two brothers, Kenneth and Clair Gross.

Helen Kathryn Grosenbach was born October 15, 1913, on a farm near Chatsworth, Illinois. She graduated from East Peoria High School in 1931, and married Glenn Hulsebus on June 21, 1942 in Peoria, Illinois. Together they served Presbyterian Churches from 1942 to 1998 in Red Oak, Maxwell, Schaller, Brooklyn, Fort Dodge, Barnum and Ewart.

Helen was a member of Tri-C, P.E.O. and Presbyterian Women and was honored by the Presbytery of Des Moines for her many years of devotion, service and encouragement to women in seven Iowa churches. She was a wonderful hostess, cook and baker, sang in the church choir, taught Sunday School, sewed for the girls, kept the family supplied with scrubbies she crocheted and was also a Girl Scout leader and camp counselor for many years.

Survivors include her daughters, Sharon (Dick) Richman of Ames, Iowa, Kathleen (Jack) Ramsey of Unionville, Missouri, and JoAnn Thompson of Cary, Illinois; her son, Steven (Kathy) Hulsebus of Fort Dodge, Iowa; nine grandchildren; twenty great grandchildren; her brother, Kenneth (Bev) Grosenbach of Washington, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Laura Grosenbach; her husband, Glenn; her brother, LeRoy Grosenbach; and her sister, Phyllis Lacey.

Wendell J. Claybrook

Wendell was born on October 6, 1919, at the family home, north of Grinnell to Ralph and Emma McIlrath Claybrook. He married Mildred Onthank in Lancaster, Missouri on February 28, 1942.

Wendell was a farmer/rancher, but his special interest was being a rodeo producer and a security and livestock control person at the Iowa State Fair for over 55 years. He bused handicap people from Poweshiek County to Marshalltown and he also worked for Cargill Seed Corn Company for several years. Wendell owned and operated the Grinnell Livestock Exchange and the Oskaloosa Sale Barn. Wendell and Mildred operated various restaurants at New Sharon, Oskaloosa and Grinnell.

Survivors include his sisters, Evelyn (Arthur) Osborn of Grinnell, Freda (Jerry) Ahrens of Marshalltown; his brother, Duane (Jeanette) Claybrook of Omaha, Texas; several nieces and nephews and special friends and caregiver, Norma Farrington of Montezuma.

Wendell was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1995; and infant son, Lonnie.

Michael Donald Ahrens

Michael D. Ahrens, 52, of Grinnell died July 21, 2010, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 26, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Raymond Lott, retired, officiating. Pallbearers will be Todd Ahrens, Bobby and Tony Allen, Mike Kriegel, Dan and Donnie LaGrange, Kurt and Stefan Mumm, and Robert Walker. Honorary bearer will be Austin Roshek. Burial will be in Pleasant Township Cemetery in Ewart. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 2:00 to 5:00 Sunday afternoon. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Michael D. Ahrens Memorial Fund.

Mike was born August 3, 1957, in Denison, Texas, the son of Donald W. and Virginia Mae Watson Ahrens. He was raised in Grinnell and was a 1975 graduate of Grinnell High School.

On October 15, 1977, he was united in marriage to Shirley Ann Kriegel at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Brooklyn. Following her death on January 16, 1999, he was married to Teresa Ann Wilkins on February 25, 2009, in Brooklyn. Grinnell was his home and he was employed at Maytag in Newton for over 30 years and retired April 30, 2009. He was a member of the Grinnell Eagles Club

Mike was devoted to his family and loved sharing his time with his grandchildren. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, golfing, and mushroom hunting. He also enjoyed traveling, playing cards, going to casinos, and classic cars. He held a great sense of humor and enjoyed having fun being a prankster.

Survivors include his wife, Teresa of Grinnell; his mother, Virginia of Grinnell; three children, Jamie Glass of Brooklyn, Amber Wallerich of Grinnell, and Matt Ahrens of Grinnell; two step-children, Lauryl and Kassie Wilkins of Grinnell; three sisters, Linda Mumm of Missouri Valley, Vicki Allen of Towanda, Illinois, and Debbie Walker of Montezuma; one brother, Richard Ahrens of Grinnell; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father; his first wife; and a son-in-law, Steven Glass.

James Lloyd George, 92, of Grinnell passed away in his sleep on July 23, 2010 at the Mayflower Community Health Center. Friends may visit Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, July 26. Family will be present from 6 – 8 p.m. with a scripture service held at 7:30 p.m. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Tuesday, July 27 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Grinnell. Burial with Military Honors will be in the Hazelwood Cemetery.

Jim, the son of Jerome Joseph George and Margaret L. McMenomy George, was born in Burlington, Iowa, on October 10, 1917. He grew up in Cedar Rapids and attended Coe College, graduating cum laude in 1938 with a B.A. degree in journalism. During WW II Jim served for four years in the U.S. Air Force. He served as an administrative officer with the Ninth Air Force Carrier Command in the European Theater of Operations. Later he was the sports editor of the European edition of The Stars and Stripes. He was discharged with the rank of Captain.

After the war Jim worked as editor for newspapers in Eldora, Grinnell and Montezuma, Iowa. In 1949 he married Isabel Chrystine MacRae of Eldora. In 1956 Jim began a four year stint at Grinnell College as staff editor and sports information director. He served in that capacity until 1960 when he joined Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Company as public relations and advertising director. When he retired from the reinsurance company twenty-five years later, he continued for another eight years as part-time historian and consultant. He is author of the company’s history, Working Together. In his 60 year career in journalism and advertising, Jim received numerous state and national awards

In 1985 he returned to Grinnell College where he once more served as sports information director and consultant. He remained in that position until 1999. In 2007 he was inducted into the Grinnell College Athletic Hall of Fame. Jim had a life-long interest in photography. He ran his own photography business, George Photo, for over thirty years, specializing in weddings, class reunions and athletic events.

Jim is survived by his wife Isabel; daughters Cheryl (Mrs. Donald) Osterhaus, Grundy Center, IA; Anita, Altadena, CA; and Janet (Mrs. Michael) Fitzgibbon, West Burlington, IA; grandchildren Geoffrey (Heather Stecklein), Adam and Ellen Osterhaus; and great-granddaughter, Amelia Osterhaus. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Joseph, Gerald and Kenneth, and infant daughter, Carolyn. Memorials may be made to St. Mary’s Parish Foundation.

Matthew Lehn Mackey
December 17, 1976 - July 28, 2010

Matt was born on December 17, 1976 to Lyndon and Diane Williams Mackey, in Midland, Texas. He graduated with the class of 1995 from Cahoma High School in Cahoma, Texas. Eighteen days later, he started his career in the military on June 6, 1995 in El Paso, Texas, by joining the United States Marine Corps and later the Army National Guard.

On April 16, 1998, he married Kaanan Anderson in Jacksonville, North Carolina. Matt served in Operation Enduring Freedom/Noble Eagle in 2004 and Operation Iraqi Freedom from October 2008 to October 2009. He was currently taking classes at Indian Hills Community College for aviation. He held a passion for flying and for his motorcycles. He enjoyed playing rugby, fishing, camping and gardening. Matt’s greatest love was for his family, especially his children.

He is survived by his wife of twelve years, Kaanan Mackey of Grinnell; five children, Alexis, Jonathan, Chloe, Aiden and Hana, all of Grinnell; his parents, Lyndon and Diane Mackey of Sterling, Colorado; one brother, Michael (Danielle) Mackey of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska; two sisters, Morgan (Kimo) Everett of Grinnell and Sarah (Jeff) Berryhill of Pineville, Missouri; maternal grandmother, Geneva Williams of Graham, Texas; and several nieces, nephews, cousins, dear friends, and his brothers and sisters in arms.

Matt died in the arms of his wife on Wednesday, July 28 at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines from injuries he sustained from a motorcycle accident, at the age of 33. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Leeroy Williams; his paternal grandparents, Orval and Lula Mackey and his fallen brothers and sisters.

Memorials may be directed to the Matthew L. Mackey Memorial Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, PO Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112, to benefit his children.
