Mary was born May 24, 1944, the daughter of Howard and Lillian Anderson Hanson, in Swea City, Iowa. She was united in marriage to Joe Raffety on November 16, 1963 at the First Baptist Church in Denton, Texas. She was a homemaker and a member of Sonrise United Methodist Church. She was involved with the golf league at Walnut Creek and active in Friday night golf outings at Norwood Golf Course. She enjoyed sports, of all kinds. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Francis E. "Joe" Raffety, of Ft Wayne; three daughters, Anita (Tom) Ford, of Grinnell, IA; Leslie (Jon) Hembree, of Ft Wayne and Mary Jo (Kris) Hardiman, of Ft Wayne; eight grandchildren, Nathan, Jarren and Alisha Ford, Jenna and Leah Hembree, Aubrey, Isaac and Knox, two brothers, Harvey (Marilyn) Hanson, of Estherville, IA and Harlan (Barbara) Hanson, of Orlando, FL and her mother, Lillian Hanson, of Graettinger, IA. She was preceded in death by her father, Howard Hanson, in 1992.

Harry Frederick Duffus

Harry was born on September 17, 1920, to Fred and Myrtle Ferneau Duffus in Malcom, Iowa. He was raised in the Brooklyn area and attended rural school near Carnsforth. Following the death of his mother he was raised by Fred and Mable Slaymaker. During World War II he served with the United States Army. On June 30, 1945, he was married to Dorothy Schaffer in Marysville, Kansas. The couple lived in Lincoln, Nebraska and later moved to Brooklyn. They owned and operated a grain and livestock farm east of Brooklyn. The couple retired in 1987 and moved to Grinnell. Harry has resided at the Brooklyn Estates since March of 2010.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Malcom and the Harold E. Smith American Legion Post #54. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, dancing and playing cards.

He is survived by one daughter, Susan (Allan) Peterson of Victor; one son, Douglas (Merna) Duffus of Grinnell; three grandchildren, Stefanie Vaverka of Brooklyn, Jonathan Blomme of Brooklyn and Julie Ryan of Marengo; and seven great grandchildren, Colton and Camiel Blomme, Max and Colette Franks, Luke, Grace and Hannah Ryan.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; one daughter, Sally Lynn Duffus; one sister, Hazel Foster; and one brother, Harold Duffus.

Memorials may be directed to the First Presbyterian Church of Malcom. The family will receive relatives and friends for lunch in the hall of the Malcom Presbyterian Church following the graveside service on Tuesday.

Opal Elizabeth Duncan

Opal E. Duncan, 88, of Grinnell died August 8, 2010, at Brooklyn Community Estates, Brooklyn, Iowa. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 13, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with the Rev. Walt Claussen, pastor of the Newburg-Chester Congregational church, officiating. Pallbearers will be Chris, Jeremy, and Steve Duncan, Mike Henry, Phil Lender, and Lisa Morgan. Honorary bearers will be Tami Andreassen, Joe Appleby, Cheri Crum, Dan and Greg DeHoedt, Bill Henry, Lori Powers, Elizabeth and Wesley Smith, Jo-Cindy White, and Heather Young. Burial will be in the Jackson Township Cemetery in Montezuma. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Opal E. Duncan Memorial Fund.

Opal was born January 18, 1922, in Deep River, Iowa, the daughter of Christopher J. and Dorothy Martin Lender. She was raised and attended school in Montezuma.

On December 7, 1940, she was united in marriage to Clarence “Rollie” Duncan in Oskaloosa. The couple lived in the Grinnell area and she was employed as a unit secretary at Grinnell General Hospital. She retired from the hospital in 1985 and then for several years she was employed at the Four Winds Motel in Grinnell.

Opal enjoyed embroidering and cross stitching, gardening and flowers, and was an avid reader.

Survivors include her children, Faye Smith of Waterloo, Lucy DeHoedt of Simpsonville, South Carolina, Robert (Donna) Duncan of Watauga, Texas, Deb (Ed) Dursky of Ottumwa, Duane (Taka) Duncan of Okinawa, Barbara Duncan of Richman, California, Rick Duncan of Hudson, Wisconsin, and Vicki (Ben) Smith of Chicopee, Massachusetts; 16 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; two daughters, Ollie Duncan and Ruth Henry; one son, Jim Duncan; four sisters, Melissa Mitchell, Lois Stag, Mary Bortell, and Minnie Forbes; and one brother, Martin Lender.

Lenore Barnes, 96, of Bettendorf and formerly of Malcom, died August 18, 2010, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House in Bettendorf. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 23, at the First United Presbyterian Church in Malcom with the Rev. John Reynolds officiating. Organist will be Pam Cronbaugh and Denise Baustian will be the hand bells. Pallbearers will be Craig Barnes, Steve and Lisa Sherwood, Stan Sherwood and Julie Ralston Aoki, and Sytacie and Nathan Heidegger. Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery in Malcom. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell and where the family will be present from 3:00 to 5:00 Sunday afternoon. Memorial contributions may be directed to the First United Presbyterian Church in Malcom or the First Presbyterian Church in Davenport.

Lenore was born July 18, 1914, on the family farm north of Montezuma, the daughter of Ralph E. and Margaret Henry McFerren. She graduated from Montezuma High School in 1930.

On December 20, 1933, she was united in marriage to Edward Duffus Barnes, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. The couple made their home in Malcom and she was employed in the Poweshiek County Treasurer’s Office and later at Grinnell College in the Office of the Registrar. She also gave piano lessons in Malcom for many years. She moved to the Masonic Village in Bettendorf in 1998 to be nearer her children. In 2008, she moved to The Fountains Assisted Living in Bettendorf.

Lenore was a faithful member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Malcom for over 50 years, where she served as trustee and elder. While living in Bettendorf she was an associate member of the First Presbyterian Church in Davenport. She loved music, reading, and was very interested in nature and conservation. She was very interested in nature habitat and planted a 3 acre tree site on her family farm.

Survivors include her two children, Jeanne M. (Scott) Sherwood of Davenport and Jack E. (Caroline) Barnes of Bettendorf; four grandchildren, Steven N. (Lisa) Sherwood, Stan T. (Julie Ralston Aoki) Sherwood, Stacie A. (Nathan) Heidegger, and Craig M. Barnes; and seven great-grandchildren, Luke, Irina, Ben, Mio, Amaya, Jonathan, and Timothy. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Edward on January 2, 1991, and two brothers, Ernest and Edgar McFerren.

Todd Franklin Peak

Todd was born on July 18, 1961, in Fort Madison, Iowa. He was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1979. Following his education he served with the Army Reserve for a period of time. On December 7, 1983, he was married to Susan Haynes in Kirksville, Missouri. The couple lived in Grinnell and he for the Certainteed Company for 16 years. He later worked at Van Wyk Freight Lines and was currently employed at the Jeld-Wen Company in Grinnell.

Todd enjoyed spending time with his family and especially his grandson, James Joseph Turner IV. He also enjoyed bartering on E-bay, riding his Harley motorcycle and successful trips to the casino.

He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Susan Peak of Grinnell; one daughter, Tiffany Peak of Brooklyn; his father, Geoffrey (Joyce) Peak of Grinnell; his mother, Ramona Taylor Ireland of Grinnell; one sister, Laura Peak Whitaker of Grinnell; two brothers, Zachary Peak and Darren Peak, both of Iowa City; his grandson, two nieces; and one nephew.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents.

Richard W. Beck

Richard W. “Whitey” Beck, 76, of Grinnell died September 4, 2010, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Saturday, September 11, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell with Pastor Kathyrn Roys, of St. John’s Lutheran Church and Muriel Johannessen, Associate in Ministry at St. John's, officiating. Organist will be Cheryl Irland and vocalists will be Marty Duffus and Rhonda Minner. Pallbearers will be his grandchildren, Ashley, Aaron, Shane, Troy, Austin, Jacob, Jordan, Joshua, and Jenna Beck. Honorary bearers will be Gene Campbell, Larry Cooper, Mark Dimit, Worthin Grattan, David, Henry, and Tom Harris, Mark Hendrickson, Don Stoker, and Lyle White. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 12:00 noon to 8:00 p.m. Friday at the Smith Funeral Home and where the family will be present from 6:00 to 8:00 Friday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grinnell or Grinnell Regional Hospice.

Dick was born October 4, 1933, in Grinnell, the son of Herman and Marie Graff Beck. He attended country schools near his home and was a 1951 graduate of Grinnell High School. He was a veteran of the United States Army.

On July 6, 1958, he was united in marriage to Karen Cooper in Newburg, Iowa. The couple farmed in Chester Township for 51 years and moved to Grinnell in September of 2009. He retired from dairy farming in 1996 and had worked for Dimit Farms part-time helping with spring planting and fall harvest. He was a member of the Grinnell Elks Lodge, Grinnell Fast-pitch Softball Association, both Sonora and Iowa National Granges, Farm Bureau, Mid-America Dairy Association, and the Gilman and Sully Co-ops.

Dick was a loving family man and was very active and generous with his grandchildren. He was quiet-natured and honest. He held a passion for fast-pitch softball and was noted not only as an outstanding pitcher, but as one of the best shortstops in the area. He was an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Chicago Cubs fan, and enjoyed watching the Iowa State Cyclones. He enjoyed bowling and had bowled on several league teams for many years. He loved his puppy, Missy.

Survivors include his wife, Karen of Grinnell; three sons, Leon (Donna) Beck of Grinnell, Roger (Sue) Beck of Manchester, and Daryl (Kelly) Beck of Grinnell; nine grandchildren; and one sister, Lorna Beck of Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law, Everett Cooper; and one brother, Raymond Beck.

Frances E. Hall

Memorials: Frances E. Hall Memorial Fund, PO BOX 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112 to benefit the Madison Church of Christ, Poweshiek County 4-H, and Heritage Park.

Frances was born November 10, 1926 to William and Margaret (Wilda) Fuller in Keswick, Iowa. She played basketball at Gibson High School prior to attending Guernsey High School, where she graduated from in 1944. During World War II, she trained to be an air traffic controller, but the war ended and her services were no longer needed. Frances then went to Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she received an elementary teaching degree.

Frances taught in Stanwood and Grinnell schools before marrying Norman Robert Hall at the Madison Church of Christ on June 25, 1950. Together they farmed north of Brooklyn for four years. Their son Dennis was born August 12, 1951 followed by their daughter Sue on February 11, 1953. In 1954, Norman and Frances moved to a farm east of Grinnell, where they lived and farmed for twenty-six years. During this time, Frances and Norman were active members of the Madison Church of Christ and Farm Bureau. When Sue was old enough to join 4-H, Frances became a 4-H leader and remained so for more than twenty years. She also served as a member of the Poweshiek County Fair Board, Grinnell Hospital Auxiliary, Master Gardeners of Grinnell, and was co-founder of Heritage Park in Grinnell.

Frances was honored as a long-time 4-H leader. She also received the “Wallace’s Farmer” Homemaker of the Year award and Volunteer of the Year award from Governor Terry Branstad.

Frances is survived by her husband of sixty years, Norman Hall of Grinnell; her children, Dennis Hall of San Francisco, California and Sue (Dave) Bouchard of Altoona, Iowa; four grandchildren; and her brother, Max (Donna) Fuller of Longmont, Colorado. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Morris Parslow
March 24, 1922 - August 25, 2010

Morris Albert Parslow was born on March 24, 1922, in Williamston, Michigan; he was the second child and the second son of Floyd Parslow and Margaret Traver Parslow. When he was four years old the family moved to Muskegon, Michigan, where he graduated from high school in 1939. He attended Muskegon Junior College for one year and Albion College for one year. After reading an article in Life magazine entitled “Socrates crosses the Delaware,” he decided “This is the place for me” and transferred to St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland. He was a freshman at St. John’s when the U.S. entered World War II. He enlisted in the Army in the summer of 1942 and was assigned to the Air Corps. He served in India and on Tinian Island where he saw the first atom bomb. Following his discharge in October, 1945, he resumed his studies at St. John’s and received his B.A. in 1948. With the aid of the G.I. Bill he went to France and studied French Literature for one year at Grenoble Université and for one semester at Strasbourg Université. Upon his admittance to Graduate School at Princeton University he returned to the U.S., earning his Ph.D. in 1954. On June 20, 1951, he married Michèle Milliat in St. André Catholic Church in Grenoble, France.

Dr. Parslow taught at the University of Chicago and at the Oyster Bay branch of New York State University before accepting a position at Grinnell College in 1962. There he rose to the rank of Full Professor and served as Chairman of the French Department, Chairman of the Humanities Division and, for two years, as Chair of the Faculty. He was a member of the Modern Languages Association and of the American Association of University Professors. He retired from Grinnell College in 1992.

First and foremost he was a teacher. His character was shaped by his Methodist upbringing and his memories of the Great Depression. He enjoyed listening to Classical music, J.S. Bach and Mozart in particular, and could often be seen walking the family dog throughout Grinnell until he suffered a stroke in December, 2004.

Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Michèle, whom he met while both were studying at Grenoble Université; three sons, Peter of Portland, Oregon, Dr. Tristram (Dr. Carolyn Katzen) of Atlanta, Georgia and Dr. Christopher (Christina Trier) of Middletown, Connecticut; one daughter, Catherine (Mark) Kaplan of Chicago, Illinois; and two granddaughters, Elizabeth Thérèse Kaplan and Olivia Trier Parslow. He was preceded in death by his two brothers and one sister.

Memorials may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice.

Robert T. Kaloupek

Memorials may be designated to the Robert T. Kaloupek Memorial Fund to benefit the Grinnell United Methodist Church, Grinnell Regional Medical Center and the Grinnell Lion’s Club.

Bob was born the son of William and Grace Thomas Kaloupek on September 20, 1927 in Grinnell, Iowa. He was raised in Grinnell and he graduated from Grinnell High School with the class of 1945.

He honorably served his country in the United States Navy as a Communications Technician Second Class from 1945 until 1949. Following his military service he attended Grinnell College. Due to injuries he received in a car accident while attending Grinnell College, Bob became disabled and then attended the University of Illinois, Champaign and through the Rehabilitation and Education Program, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree in marketing.

He was united in marriage to Marjory Reeves on February 16, 1961 at the United Methodist Church in Grinnell. Bob served as the Poweshiek County Treasurer in the early 1960’s and then was the secretary of the Grinnell Schools before his employment at Grinnell Regional Medical Center as comptroller in the 1980’s. Bob was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church and he was treasurer of the church and the church foundation. He also was a member of the Grinnell Lion’s Club and he served as treasurer since 1994. His other accomplishments were serving on the Human Rights Commission and serving as president of the board of Mid-Iowa Workshop in Marshalltown. His enjoyments included reading, watching NASCAR races on television, fishing and working on his computer.

Bob is survived by his wife of forty-nine years, Marjory Kaloupek of Grinnell; his sister-in-law, Mary Ann Howell Porter of Sterling, Virginia; and his niece and nephew. Bob was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, William Eugene Kaloupek.
