Terry was born on January 16, 1949, in Grinnell, Iowa to Cecil and Maxine Roth Roberts. He was raised in Hartwick and graduated from HLV High School with the Class of 1967. Following his education he assisted his father in the tank wagon business and worked for the Doty Electric and Plumbing Service in Brooklyn. On February 28, 1970, he was married to Sandra Doty in Brooklyn.

On February 28, 1970, he was married to Sandra Doty in Brooklyn. The couple lived briefly in Cedar Rapids before moving to Brooklyn in 1971. He worked for General Telephone Company in Grinnell and later owned and operated Roberts Electric Service. He was also employed as a maintenance man for Brookhaven Nursing Home and since 2000, he worked in facilities management at University Hospitals in Iowa City. He retired in 2007.

Terry was a member of the Grace United Methodist Church and had served with the Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department from 1976 to 2006. He had also held local, state and regional offices in the Jaycees. He enjoyed camping and traveling to Mexico and assisting family and friends with mowing and snow removal. His family and pet dogs were very important to him.

Survivors include his wife, Sandy Roberts of Brooklyn; his children, Shawn Roberts of Oskaloosa, Scott Roberts of Brooklyn, and Jason (Nicole) Roberts of Deep River; seven grandchildren, Matthew Innis, Dalton, Cody, Levi, Breanna, Emily and Jerica Roberts; his parents, Cecil and Maxine Roberts of Belle Plaine; two sisters, Jeanne (Ed) Langhurst of Marion and Julie (Bob) Breja of Belle Plaine; and three sister-in-laws, Becky (Louie) Higdon of Fort Mohave, Arizona, Donna (Alan) Muntz of Grinnell and Patti (Clif) Martin of Abingdon, VA. He was preceded in death by his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Memorials may be directed to the Terry Roberts Memorial Fund and sent in care of Sandy Roberts, 1200 Clay Street, Brooklyn, Iowa 52211.

Edwin was united in marriage to Velma Mae Smith December 31st, 1949. To this union were born five children: Phyllis, Raymond, Garold, June & Jimmy.

Edwin was a member of the United States Army, serving our country in WWII. He retired from Maytag after 33 years, where he worked as a machinist. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and especially spending time with his family.

Edwin is survived by his wife of sixty-one years, Velma Nelson of Searsboro; his children, Phyllis Brady of Searsboro, Thelma "June" (David) Trease of Kellogg, Garold (Diane) Nelson of Grinnell, and James (Pauline) Nelson of Searsboro; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; and his sisters, Veda Critchfield of Kirksville, Missouri, Avis Lunsford of Green City, Missouri, and Roberta Milward of Excelsior Springs, Missouri.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Raymond Nelson; and his brother, Eldon "Spike" Nelson.

Thomas Edwin Pawlak

Thomas Edwin Pawlak, 59, of Newburg, died October 25, 2011, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, with his wife by his side. Tom was born November 21, 1951, in Grinnell, the son of Henry August and Margaret Claire “Peg” Finley Pawlak. He was raised in Grinnell and was a 1970 graduate of Grinnell High School. On December 25, 2005, he was married to Marsha Crawford, at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Grinnell. The couple lived in Newburg.

Tom was employed with his father at Industrial Beverage in Grinnell most of his life until the business was sold in February of 2005. Since then he actively sold guns and misc. supplies through his website, Damn Big Yank Trading Company.

He was a life-time member of the NRA and a life-time member of the Iowa Street Rod Association, holding Office of Finance in 1979 and 1980 and because of his outstanding performance in that office he was elected president in 1982 and then again in 1992.

Tom was an avid fan of John Wayne. He loved trains, western movies and guns. He loved his big boy toys as well. He owned a 1939 Ford sedan, a 1948 Ford pickup truck and a 1976 Datsun. He was a people person and he made friends easily, if you knew him, you know he had a knack for talking. He had stories to tell and shared them when he could. He enjoyed stand-up comedy and was an avid music fan of Marty Robbins and Toby Keith.

Survivors include his loving wife, Marsha of Newburg; his father, Henry Pawlak of Grinnell; one brother, Henry (Joyce) Pawlak of San Diego, California; one sister, Markijean (Mike) Graham of Newton; and two nieces and a nephew. He was preceded in death by his mother.

Fred Lloyd Weaver, Jr.

Fred L. Weaver, Jr., 77, of Grinnell died October 28, 2011, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. Funeral services are scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 1, at the Smith Funeral Home in Grinnell, with John Whitehead III, a grandson, officiating. Pianist will be Jim Weaver. Vocalists will be Jessica Widmer,and the Three Belles, Sadie Hanson and Abbi and Alli Weaver. Pallbearers will be Darrel Batterson, Crystal Humphrey, Jason Kane, Casey and Cody Weaver, John Whitehead III and Robert Widmer. Honorary Bearers will Mike Thielman, Mike McClintock and Ko Lat. Burial will be in Westfield Cemetery, southwest of Grinnell. Visitation will be held from 1200 noon to 8:00 p.m. Monday at the Smith Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Monday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to Center Friends Church in Newton.

Fred was born November 11, 1933, in Gilman, the son of Fred L. “Fritz” and Ida Madeline Barr Weaver. He was raised in Chester Township and was a 1952 graduate of Grinnell High School.

In August of 1955, he was united in marriage to Delores Ann Mayo, in Grinnell. The couple farmed in Chester Township for several years and were later divorced. He married Ruth Krumm on January 7, 1973 in Grinnell and the couple lived on a farm south of Grinnell. He was also employed at Grinnell College for approximately 15 years and retired in 1995.

Fred was a member of the Center Friends Church in Newton, Isaac Walton League, and a Christmas tree association. He enjoyed raising and selling Christmas trees, tending to his bee hives, gardening, and fishing and hunting. He especially enjoyed his fishing trips to Canada. He believed in peace and goodwill, but also supported our troops overseas.

Survivors include four children, Mary Whitehead of Kellogg, Jim Weaver of Hudson, Mark Weaver of New Sharon and Diane Widmer of Toledo; two step-children, Vivian McGuire of San Antonio, Texas and Edward McGuire of Fort Worth, Texas; one brother, Roger Weaver of Williamsburg; two sisters, Delores Harrison of Tucson, Arizona and Marilyn Merkel of Plano, Texas; eleven grandchildren, Casey, Cody, Alli and Abbi Weaver, Jason Kane, John Whitehead III, Crystal Humphrey, Robert Widmer, Mary Barlow, Jessica Widmer and Rowan Barnard-Kent; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ruth in 2009; and two brothers, Warren and Gary Weaver.

Patricia “Pat” Saxton was born on July 5, 1945 to George and Dorothy Myers Hager in Doylestown, PA. She grew up in Doylestown and was educated in the Central Bucks County school district. She graduated from high school in 1963 and attended college at Westchester State College, now Westchester University. Pat graduated in 1967 with a bachelor’s degree in music education. She worked as an organist and choir director for several churches in Pennsylvania, including St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Doylestown, PA for 12 years.

Pat married John E. Saxton on June 25, 1982, with the service held in her home congregation Salem UCC, Doylestown, PA. John and Pat returned to Primghar, IA where John was serving as a United Church of Christ minister with the United Church of Primghar. Pat continued to be very involved with music in the church and community in northwest Iowa. Their son David was born in Rochester, MN on June 3, 1983. Pat shared her love of music with David and their daughter Caroline, who was born on November 3, 1986 in Marshalltown, IA. Pat went back to school in 1991 and earned a bachelor’s degree from Buena Vista University in accounting. Throughout their life together in Gladbrook and Hubbard, IA, Pat shared her musical talents with the community, church and schools. She served as the organist and choir director at St. Petri Evangelical Lutheran Church in Story City, IA from 1999 to 2010.

When they moved to Grinnell in June 2000, Pat was enthused about additional music opportunities, including the Grinnell Community Chorus (Oratorio Society) and high school theater productions. She enjoyed her work with the Grinnell Community schools, playing for soloists and small groups, middle and high school music concerts and serving as the rehearsal pianist for five Grinnell high school musicals. She was greatly looking forward to being part of the upcoming production of “How to Succeed in Business (Without Really Trying)”. Pat’s love of music and people was evident throughout her life, and she will be greatly missed.

Pat is survived by her husband John, two children, David, 28, and Caroline, 25; two sisters, Darrie Schmidt of Elizabethtown, PA and June (John) Martin of Columbus, OH; her sister-in-law, Myrle Hager of Doylestown, PA and John’s sister Gretchen (Bob) Stemple of Larkspur, CO; 13 nieces and nephews, many great-nieces and nephews and several great-great-nieces and nephews. She is survived by many dear friends. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Clyde Hager, brother-in-law Bill Schmidt, and her parents-in-law Margaret and Darrell Saxton.

William Bloom

Bill was born on Wednesday, February 16, 1921, in Burlington, Iowa to William Leo Bloom Sr. and Marie Elizabeth Reed. He was raised in Burlington and graduated from Burlington High School with the Class of 1939. He also attended a few years of college.

On April 19, 1944, he was united in marriage to Gladys G. “Gertie” Lear in Burlington, Iowa. He served with the United States Army until his discharge in 1946. The couple lived in Chicago, Milwaukee and Denver before moving to Osceola in 1985. He worked as an office manager for General Electric Medical Systems prior to retirement. The couple moved to the Mayflower Community in Grinnell in 2000.

Bill was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Rotary Club, the Osceola Chamber of Commerce and had served on the Osceola City Council, the Osceola Library Board and the Clarke County Development Corporation.

He is survived by two sons, James W. Bloom of El Sobrante, CA. and John A. Bloom of La Mirada, CA and three grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Memorials in Bill's honor may be directed to the Mayflower Community of Grinnell or to Biola University in LaMirada, California. A second Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 12, 2011, at the United Methodist Church in Osceola, Iowa. The family will host a luncheon in the hall of the church following the memorial service.

Edna Youngbeck Laing

Edna was born the daughter of John and Sophia Wild Youngbeck on April 25, 1907 in Minford, North Dakota. She and her five brothers and four sisters were reared on the family farm in Minford.

She was united in marriage to Marvin Laing in 1930 and they made their home near Minneapolis, Minnesota. Edna moved to St. Francis Manor in Grinnell in 2004 to be near her brother, Gerald Youngbeck. She was a member of Our Lady of Grace Church in Edina, Minnesota.

She is survived by a sister, Gladys Gantz of Colorado; several nieces and nephews; and her friends Richard and Marsha Bachman.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin Laing; her brothers, Gerald, Reuben, John, Alonzo and Alex; her sisters, Ella, Hilda and Erna.

Lola was born on September 18, 1935, in Grinnell, Iowa to Lester and Emma Graff Luttman. She was raised in Grinnell and graduated from Grinnell High School with the Class of 1953. Following her education she worked as a telephone operator for General Telephone Company in Grinnell.

On December 5, 1954, she was married to Claire Simmons at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Grinnell and their wedding ceremony was the first wedding in the Grinnell church. The couple owned and operated a grain and livestock farm in Sheridan Township. Lola was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church of Tama and the Sheridan Welcome In Club. She enjoyed dancing, fishing, playing cards, traveling throughout the United States and attending Iowa Hawkeye football games.

She is survived by two sons, Duane (Carna) Simmons of Keller, Texas and Jerry (Wanda Ervin) Simmons of Argyle, Texas; two grandchildren, Lea and Brad Simmons; two step grandchildren, Jeff and Jennifer Ely; one sister, Doris (Paul) Jones of Brooklyn; one brother-in-law, Terry Schmidt of West Des Moines; one daughter-in-law, Susan Starling of Thomasville, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; one son, Tony Simmons; and one sister, Marilyn Schmidt.

Memoirals may be directed to Grinnell Regional Hospice or to the American Cancer Society.

William "Willie" Carver was born September 25, 1925, in Anniston Alabama to the union of Elder and Amazonia Caver. He was the youngest of six children born to Gladys Young, Minnie Lee Caver, Clarance Curtis Davis, Willie Mae Bailey Almon and Robert Lee Caver, All who have preceded him in death.

Willie's love for his family knew no bounds and he didn’t recognize titles of "in-laws" or "steps". In his 86 years of living he drove trucks for over 60 years, and during his travels, met many interesting people from all over the United States some of which became personal friends. As his line of work indicates he loved to travel. He had a passion for life and lived it to the fullest. He was well liked and will be truly missed.

On June 10, 1992, he was united in holy matrimony to Teresa Kelley and from that union were born their children Benjamin and Suzanne Carver. He also had two sons, Marshail and Richard Caver, from a previous marriage to Minnie Lee Stevenson.

His memory will be cherished by his loving and devoted wife Teresa, his daughter Suzanne Lea Carver, 3 sons; Marshail Caver, Richard Caver and wife, Diane, Benjamin K. Carver, 6 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; and several other relatives and friends.

Madeline was born on August 30, 1919 in Dallas County, near Waukee, Iowa to Henry and Hazel Mader Manders. She graduated from Waukee High School and Capital City Commercial College. On October 31, 1942, she was married to Russell Eugene Heston Sr in Meridian, Mississippi. The couple lived in Washington, D.C., Indianapolis, Indiana and Champaign/Urbana, Illinois before moving to Grinnell, Iowa in 1958. She served as Secretary/Treasurer of the Grinnell Country Club for over 20 years. Madeline enjoyed playing bridge, cross-word puzzles, painting, knitting, crocheting, sewing, traveling and being with her family.

She was a member of the Grinnell United Methodist Church, serving as 3-year old Sunday school teacher for an extended time and she held office in the United Methodist Women. Other interests included TTT, Sunset Club, and several bridge groups. She loved to volunteer with Camp Fire Girls and the Girls Camp Association. She also delivered Meals on Wheels and served as a volunteer at Grinnell Regional Medical Center for almost 40 years.

Survivors include her four children, Carole Jeanne Heston (Kenneth)Weidaw of Pittsburgh, PA, Russell Eugene Heston Jr of Fort Collins, Colorado, Margot Anne Heston Mickle of Gainsville, Georgia and Marlene Lee Heston (Dennis) Null of Charles City, IA; eight grandchildren; great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; one niece, Jennifer Manders Blomendahl of Olathe, Kansas; and one nephew, Robert Manders of Seattle, Washington.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 36 years; one sister, Dorothy Louise Manders Olson; two brothers, Robert Lee and Marvin Manders; one son-in-law, Thomas Richard Mickle; and one great grandchild, Eldon Leroy Schanbeck.

If friends so desire, the family requests that memorial donations be made to Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA), Grinnell Regional Hospice or to the Second Mile.
