Viola Shaffer

Viola Shaffer, 96, of Donnellson Health Center, formerly of Portland, Texas, died at 12:31 p.m. Wednesday, June 16, 2004, at the health center.

Born April 3, 1908, in Marceline, Mo., she was the daughter of Ebbie and Linnie Redding Heaton. She married William Lacer. She later married Alfred Shaffer. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. Shaffer was a registered nurse.

Survivors include three nieces, Marianne Sevier of Donnellson, Bonnie Wilson of Clifton, N.J., and Cheryl Fowler of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and two nephews, Jerry Heaton of Pleasant Valley, Mo., and Thomas Heaton of Fayetteville, Ark.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

There will be no visitation or funeral for Mrs. Shaffer. Her body has been cremated. Burial will be in Texas at a later date.

A memorial has been established.

Zada Luers

Zada "Sue" Luers, 74, of West Burlington, died Tuesday, Aug. 17, 2004, at her home.

Born Oct. 25, 1929, in Van Buren, Ark., she was the daughter of Theron Cherry and Thelma Atha Price Brewer. On Oct. 10, 1948, she married Eugene Henry Luers in Van Buren.

Mrs. Luers was a homemaker. She also worked for Bell Telephone as a telephone operator and for the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown.

She was a 1948 graduate of Van Buren High School. She was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church for more than 50 years and a former member of the Ladies Aid/"Mary Martha Society."

Survivors include her husband; five daughters, Rebecca McKee, Regenia Rothlauf, Renee Martin and Rhonda Albin, all of West Burlington, and Robin Wyatt of Aurora, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; four great–grandchildren; two sisters, Patricia Deffenbaugh and Theora Owens, both of Van Buren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Luers will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel, with Pastor Christopher Roepke officiating. Burial will be in Latty Cemetery in rural Burlington.

A memorial has been established for Concordia Lutheran Church.

William "Ed" Otto

William "Ed" Edwin Otto, 92, of Burlington died at 5:24 p.m. Tuesday, September 23, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born March 8, 1911, in Wapello, he was the son of William S. and Ella Limbocher Otto. On July 18, 1945, he married Lois Mae Rostenbach at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Davenport.

Mr. Otto first worked for Benner Tea Co. He then worked as branch manager and exterminator for Brookfield Pest Control and McCabe Termite and Pest Control for 31 years, retiring in 1984.

He was a 1929 graduate of Jefferson High School in Jefferson. He was a member of Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was a former member of Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge No. 579, Prime Timers in West Burlington and was very active in Scouting when his sons were younger. He enjoyed playing cards, puzzles, reading, watching television and sports.

Survivors include his wife, Lois Mae of Burlington; four children, Richard (Carol) Otto of Winter Springs, Florida, Deanna (Larry) McNabb of Monticello, Illinois, Jerry W. (Sue) Otto of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and Randy (Deb) Otto of Orangeville, Illinois; seven grandchildren; two step grandchildren; two great grandchildren and one step great granddaughter.

His parents and two sisters preceded him in death.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday and after 8 a.m. until the time of service Saturday at Lunning Chapel. The family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to the time of service Saturday.

The funeral for Mr. Otto will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel with Pastor Daniel Cole officiating. Burial will be in Wapello Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church.

William Folgelstrom

William Folgelstrom, 72, of Perry, Mo., formerly of Burlington, died at 7:42 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003, at his son's home. Funeral arrangements are pending at Lunning Chapel.

Zachery Liles

Zachery A. Liles, 19, of Wayland, died as the result of an auto accident Wednesday evening, Oct. 6, 2004. Arrangements are pending at Honts Funeral Home in Winfield.

Winifred Sharpe

Winifred Clark Sharpe, 95, of Mount Pleasant, died Saturday, Nov. 27, 2004, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Sept. 5, 1909, in Wayland, she was the daughter of Harry H. and Della Wery Clark. On Dec. 28, 1935, she married Gerald L. Sharpe in Rushville, Ill. He died Sept. 27, 1986.

Mrs. Sharpe taught at Lockridge High School for seven years and served as principal for four years.

She graduated from Wayland High School and the Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, a 50–year member of the Order of the Eastern Star, Past Matrons' Club of the Order of the Eastern Star, and a 50–year member of the Founders' Chapter A of the National TTT Society.

Survivors include one son, Larry J. Sharpe of Bettendorf; two grandchildren; three great–grandchildren; and three stepgreat–grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. There will be an Eastern Star service at 7 p.m.

The graveside service for Mrs. Sharpe will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Forest Home Chapel, with the Rev. Edward Peterson officiating.

A memorial has been established for the Iowa Department for the Blind Library.

Leah Bachman

Leah Eichelberger Bachman, 102, of Tiskilwa, Ill., formerly of Wayland, died Friday, Dec. 3, 2004, at Colonial Hall Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Princeton, Ill.

Born Jan. 13, 1902, in Wayland, she was the daughter of John and Josephine Roth Graber. On Jan. 18, 1923, she married Chris E. Eichelberger in Wayland. He died June 27, 1948. On May 22, 1968, she married Edward Bachman in Tiskilwa, Ill. He died Oct. 16, 1980.

Mrs. Bachman operated a Bible bookstore from her home in Wayland. She taught Sunday school and Bible school.

She was raised in Wayland and was a member of Sugar Creek Mennonite Church. In 1962, she moved to Tiskilwa where she became a member of Willow Springs Mennonite Church. She enjoyed cooking, entertaining and planting a large garden.

Survivors include one son, James Eichelberger of Racine, Wis.; two daughters, Evelyn Albrecht and Gratice Albrecht, both of Tiskilwa; seven grandchildren; 15 great–grandchildren; one great–great–grandchild; one sister, Stella Boshart of Wayland; and one brother, Alvin Graber of Newton, Kan.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son, four brothers and five sisters.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, south of Wayland, with family present from noon to 1 p.m.

The funeral service for Mrs. Bachman will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Sugar Creek Mennonite Church, with the Rev. Nathan Luitjens officiating. Burial will be in Sugar Creek Mennonite Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for Sugar Creek Mennonite Church and Willow Springs Mennonite Church.

Beatty Funeral Home in Wayland is assisting with arrangements.

Opal Kuntz

Opal G. Kuntz, 90, of Burlington, died at 9:31 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, 2004, at her daughter's home in Bur–lington.

Born March 24, 1914, in Lineville, Mo., she was the daughter of Pete and Vera Glendorse Bardwell. In 1929, she married Cecil Jones in Lineville, Iowa. They divorced. She then married George Lyons in LaHarpe, Ill. He preceded her in death. On July 1, 1971, she married Edward Kuntz in Lineville, Iowa. He died Feb. 13, 1992.

Mrs. Kuntz was a telephone operator, worked in production at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, was a waitress at Tiny's Cafe and was a housekeeper for 23 years at the Holiday Inn.

She was of the Methodist faith. She was a member of the Eagles, Golden Oldies and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. She liked to crochet and embroider, enjoyed flower gardens and playing bingo.

Survivors include one daughter, Myrtle Schwerin of Burlington; two stepsons, Leroy Kuntz of Burlington and Leon Kuntz of St. Louis; four stepdaughters, Rose Halverson of Godfrey, Ill., Joyce White of Burlington and Kathleen Goding and Carol Carpenter, both of Mount Pleasant; five grandchildren; eight grandchildren; great–grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Watson of Lineville, Iowa; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson and one daughter.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Prugh's Chapel.

The funeral for Mrs. Kuntz will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. Frank Beaty officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Girdner Cemetery in Lineville, Mo.

A memorial has been established.

Velna Miller

Velna Marie Miller, 93, of Burlington, died at 1:50 a.m. Friday, Dec. 19, 2003, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Oct. 25, 1910, in Burnside, Ill., she was the daughter of Oliver Milton and Lydia Caroline Christine Weinrich Hull. On Oct. 12, 1938, she married Harold "Jack" Miller. They later divorced.

Ms. Miller worked for Northwestern Bell and US West as an operator and supervisor. She retired after 47 years in 1975. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers.

Velna's family moved from Burnside to Burlington, where she graduated from Burlington High School in 1928. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, the Eagles Club and the Moose. She loved to bowl and play bingo and cards. In her later years, she made calendars and delivered meals for the senior citizens center.

Survivors include one sister, Willa E. Sommerfeld of Burlington; one sister–in–law, Phoebe Hull of Burlington; four nieces and two nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and one brother.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday and on Friday after 8 a.m. in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Ms. Miller will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Dennis Tevis officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church, Hope Haven and the Des Moines County Animal Shelter.

Datie Walker

Datie Walker, 90, of Mount Pleasant, died at 6:35 a.m. Monday, May 14, 2001, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Dec. 22, 1910, in Fredonia, she was the daughter of Jesse and Mabel Wal-singer Mi-ckey. She married Lyman Ogier on Jan. 6, 1930, in Wapello. He died April 11, 1948. She later married A.J. Walker on Jan. 20, 1950, in Wapello. He died Jan. 15, 1963.
Mrs. Walker attended Ferndale schools. She and her husband owned and operated Walker's Restopia in Albia. In 1957, she moved to Mount Pleasant and operated the Broadway Motel for one year. She and her husband became custodians of First Baptist Church, a job which she continued until retiring in 1972.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant. She enjoyed gardening and raising flowers of all kinds. She made many quilt blocks and crocheted until the time of her death.

Survivors include one son, Ted Ogier of Mount Pleasant; one daughter, Helen Kramer of Des Moines; two stepsons, Richard Walker and Carl Walker; one stepdaughter, Vera Wittmeyer; one brother, John Mickey of Columbus Junction; two sisters, Dorothy Parsons and Mary Mickey, both of Muscatine; three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren.

Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and three brothers.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Beatty Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Walker will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Dave Plooster officiating. Burial will be in the Fredonia Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for her church.
