Dale Thomas Adkins

Memorial Service: 1:30 p.m. Tuesday January 31, 2012 at First Friends Church, Grinnell
Dale Adkins, 97 of Grinnell died January 26, 2012, at Grinnell Regional Medical Center. A memorial service has been scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 31, at the First Friends Church in Grinnell with the Rev. Todd Follette officiating. Organist will be Kathy Vander Ploeg. Burial will be held at a later date at Rock Creek Cemetery in Jasper County. There will be no visitation. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Heart Association.

Dale was born August 29, 1914, in Grinnell, the son of Theodore Bonham and Susannah Gill Adkins. He was raised in California and Colorado and later returned to Grinnell as a teenager. He was a graduate of Grinnell High School where he ran track and sang in a men’s quartet. While in high school he was employed at the Monroe Hotel. After high school he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps and lived in Leon, Iowa.

On January 30, 1937, he was united in marriage to Dorothy Luman, in Missouri and the couple made their home in Grinnell. He was employed for several years at Midwest Manufacturing in Kellogg and later Maytag. During World War II he served with the United States Army. After the war, he returned home and was an agent for Prudential Life Insurance and later Fidelity. Later in life he worked in various capacities at the Depot Train Station and for the Grinnell School District. He was a member of the Grinnell American Legion, V.F.W., and the Masonic and Odd Fellows Lodges.

Dale held a great love for his family and was very protective of them. Sharing his time with his family was very important to him. He was an avid reader and particularly enjoyed novels by Louis L’Amour and other American West books. He enjoyed bowling and playing cards and yard darts with family members and friends. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping, and attending garage sales and auctions. For 27 years he wintered in Mission, Texas.

Survivors include his wife of 75 years, Dorothy of Grinnell; one daughter, Sherry Lee (Burnham) Anderson of Grinnell; nine grandchildren; and many great and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Nancy Ann Davis; one brother, Olin; and three sisters, Elma, Irene and Lela.

Bill Collett, 76, of Grinnell died February 5, 2012, at St. Francis Manor in Grinnell. A graveside service and burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, February 10, at Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell, with Rev. John Epperson, retired of Grinnell, officiating. Pallbearers will be Tim and Matt Carnes, Dan and Dakota Owens, Tom Isenberg, Lonnie Stewart and Eldon Thompson. Honorary bearers will be Jim Adkins, and Chadd and Heath Collett. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Thursday at the Smith Funeral Home with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday evening. Memorial contributions may be directed to PALS (Poweshiek County Animal League Shelter) in Grinnell.

Bill was born May 25, 1935, in Ottumwa, Iowa, the son of Orville William and Margaret Townsend Collett. He was raised in Ottumwa and attended public school there. He was a veteran of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. While serving in the military he was able to finish his high school education and also further his education in electrical trade. He was employed for 20 years as a lineman for Iowa Southern Utilities and later in the maintenance department at Grinnell General Hospital. He retired in 1997.

On January 27, 1975, he was united in marriage to Linda Adkins, in South Dakota and the couple continued to make their home in Grinnell.

Bill was a member of the NRA. He was an avid gun collector and enjoyed collecting coins as well. He held a passion for history and, due to his many hours of research, was very knowledgeable on a wide variety of subjects. He loved animals, especially his dogs, and was known fondly for his open door policy for allowing other pets in his neighborhood to enter his home. He loved his family so very much and was a great provider for them. He had many friends, and his neighbors, Tim and Annette Carnes and Dan and Julie Owens, had become very close friends.

Survivors include his wife, Linda of Grinnell; two sons, Chadd (Mickey) Collett of Ottumwa and Heath (Bridget Koester) Collett of Des Moines; three grandchildren, Tandy King of Phoenix, Arizona, Jeff McMillian of Ottumwa, and Jessi Haines of Fairfield; and one great-granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Pam in 2008; one brother, Darrell; and two sisters, Charlotte Collier and Shirley Qualkinbush.

Marie Albert
July 31, 1923 - February 07, 2012
Ladora, Iowa

Marie Louise Albert was born on July 31, 1923 in Victor, Iowa to Louis Christian and Selma (Van Doorneveldt) Christian. She was raised in Hartwick, Iowa and graduated from Hartwick High School.

Marie married Ralph Albert Jr. on December 22, 1945 at St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor, Iowa. The couple farmed in rural Ladora where they raised their three children. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband on the farm. Marie loved to travel in her early years and her most memorable trips were to St. Croix to see her daughter Lori, and to Pennsylvania to meet a pen pal, who she has kept in contact with throughout her life. Later in life, Marie enjoyed playing cards, bingo, going to the casino and listening to country music, especially Patsy Cline.

Marie is survived by her children; Connie (Mike) Wahl of Lincoln, Nebraska, Danny (Nancy) Albert of Ladora, Lori (Ron) Caltagirone of Cypress, Texas, eight grandchildren; Joe (Shayla) Wahl, Marcus Wahl, Robert (Lisa) Meyers, Randi Jo Conaway, Heather (Dave) Pitz, Shawn (Missy) Albert, Zac Caltagirone, Nick Caltagirone, sixteen great-grandchildren, Brother in-law Maynard Saylor and special friends; Sharlee Feller, Cynthia Peska, Mary Huber, Russell Mumm, and multiple nephews and nieces.

Marie was eighty-eight years of age and was preceded in death by her husband Ralph, brother Camiel, sister Marcella Saylor, and sister in-law Gloria Barb.

Memorials may be directed to the Marie Albert memorial Fund.

Lloyd E. Durr
June 12, 1932 - February 07, 2012

Lloyd was born on June 12, 1932 to Edward and Mary Jane Peak Durr on the family farm in rural Jasper County, Iowa. He attended country school and then attended Grinnell High School.

Lloyd was united in marriage to Virginia Bailey on December 22, 1952 in Iowa City, Iowa. To this union five sons were born. Lloyd farmed and raised livestock, wild horses, buffalos and other exotic animals throughout his life. In addition to his farm and cattle he enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events, horse shows, truck pulls, and stock car races. His other enjoyments included bowling, hunting, and camping at the Iowa State Fair.

Lloyd is survived by his wife of 59 years, Virginia Durr of Grinnell; his sons, Rick (Andrea) Durr of Lake Rathbun, Iowa, Gary (Sandy) Durr of Grinnell, Mike (Connie) Durr of Montezuma, Iowa, David (Laura) Durr of Montezuma, and Denny Durr of Grinnell; 6 grandchildren, Jonathan, Matthew, Chase, Jenna, Lyndie (Adam Mann) and Dylan Durr; 4 step grandchildren, Aaron Williams, Tait, Jed and Eli VanZante; his sister, Margaret Clark of Grinnell; and his brother, Don (Evelyn) Durr of Orlando, Florida.

Lloyd was preceded in death by his parents.

Virginia was born on October 29, 1926 to William and Beulah Wandling Fisher in Belle Plaine, Iowa.

She was raised and educated in Belle Plaine.

Virginia was united in marriage to Donald F. Peska on October 31, 1944 in Marengo, Iowa.

The couple farmed near Hartwick, Iowa and she was a homemaker.

Later she worked at Hall’s Electric, ironed clothes and did housekeeping work for area families, and candles eggs at Fontinel’s in Victor.

Virginia’s family was her life and she dearly loved her grandchildren, Ginger and Donnie.

Her granddaughter Ginger reminisced about how her grandma, grandpa, Donnie and she would beautifully decorate various trees on the roadside on Highway 6 for people to enjoy as they were driving.

She was a talented seamstress who made all of her families clothing.

Her other enjoyments included canning, baking, cooking, riding motorcycles, and going to Cedar Rapids to shop and eat a hot meatloaf sandwich at Killian’s.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Pamela (Wayne) Landuyt of Grinnell; her granddaughter, Ginger (Richard) Phipps of Grinnell; 4 great grandchildren, Chelsea Jo McCurry, Brooklyn Kay Phipps, Sierra Nicole Phipps, and Meagan Marie Phipps; and her sister, Ruth Beck of Belle Plaine.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald Peska in 2006; her grandson, Donnie Landuyt in 1996; and her siblings, Raymond Fisher, Dolores Slaymaker, Kenny Fisher, and Roy Fisher; and her half-brother, Lyle Wandling.

Reatha Eleanor Evans
June 15, 1935 - February 10, 2012

Reatha was born on Saturday, June 15, 1935, near Brooklyn, Iowa to Everett and Doris Jones Johnston.

She grew up on a farm southeast of Malcom and graduated from Montezuma High School with the Class of 1952.

While in high school she enjoyed performing in plays, served as drum majorette, and played on the first girls’ basketball team at Montezuma High School.

On July 4, 1953, Reatha met Carl Evans on a blind date.

During their courtship they enjoyed going to auto races in Oskaloosa “to watch the red cars win.” On August 22, 1954, Reatha and Carl were married at the First United Methodist Church in Montezuma “on the hottest day of the summer.”

At their wedding, Reatha’s brother, Don, met Carl’s sister, Mary.

It wasn’t long before there was another wedding. Carl and Reatha farmed the Evans’ family farm south of Grinnell near Westfield, where they also enjoyed neighborhood card parties.

In 1958, Carl was called into the United States Army and Reatha took classes at AIB in Des Moines.

She also enjoyed making ceramics during his service in the military.

After Carl’s discharge, Reatha worked as a bookkeeper at the McFarland Clinic in Ames, while Carl completed his degree at Iowa State University.

They lived in one of the quonset huts at Pammel Court in Ames.

The couple were blessed with two children, Beverly Ann and Michael Eugene.

In addition to being a homemaker, Reatha worked as a secretary in the guidance counselors’ office at Atlantic High School, as activity director for the Agency on the Aging for the Iowa Western Community College of Council Bluffs and was also employed by RRACAP of Jasper County.

She also enjoyed her volunteer work. The couple enjoyed family camping trips, square dancing and participating in Marriage Encounter, Cursillo, and other marriage enrichment activities.

Reatha had a well-developed sense of humor, was an avid bridge player, enjoyed being active in church and choir and being a foster mother.

She was an active member of St. Luke United Methodist Church in Newton from the time the couple moved to Newton in 1978 until she became ill more than 20 years ago.

She was also very active in politics. In the early 1980’s, she completed her A.A. degree from Des Moines Area Community College.

She had a strong desire to make a difference in the world.

Reatha was a wonderful wife, mother and friend. She was her husband’s best friend and supporter.

They were often stopped and complimented in later years because they enjoyed holding hands while walking.

She also greatly loved her children and grandchildren.

Those who will miss her are her husband, Carl Evans of Kellogg; two children, Beverly (Jeffrey) Lloyd of Newton and Michael (Karla) Evans of Earlham; twelve grandchildren, Jeffrey “Scott” (Kara) Lloyd, Jennifer (Bryant) Kaiser, Kimberly (Timothy) Campbell, Wendy Lloyd, Michael Lloyd, Christine (Tyler) Curtis, Nathan Lloyd, Luke Evans, Benjamin Evans, Elisabeth Evans, Gabriella Evans and Jared Evans; eight great grandchildren, Alissa, Zachary, Micah, Tiffany, Joanna, Colin, Madelynn and Natalie; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Donald and Max Johnston.

Memorials may be directed to the Scholarship Fund for Willowbrook in Newton, Grinnell Regional Hospice and the Mayflower South Village Activity Fund and sent in care of the Smith Funeral Home, P.O. Box 368, Grinnell, Iowa 50112.
