Dorothy L. Melinsky

Dorothy L. Melinsky, age 84, of Alexandria, Virginia formerly of Washington, Iowa died Friday, September 16, 2004 at the Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital in Alexandria, Virginia.

Funeral services will be held 11:15 AM Wednesday at the St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Father Edward O'Melia officiating. Friends may begin calling at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home beginning at noon on Tuesday where a prayer services will be held at 7:00 PM Tuesday. Burial will be in the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. A memorial has been established in her memory for Catholic Charities.

Dorothy was born February 13, 1920 in Washington County, Iowa the daughter of Frank and Victoria (Shelangoskie) Melinksy. She is survived by several cousins and is the last of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by her parents and sister Celesta Melinsky.

Dorothy was raised in Washington and attended St. James School and graduated from Washington High School. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington and St. Thomas Moore Cathedral in Arlington, VA. She belonged to the Potomac River Jazz Club. She had several articles published in the Mississippi Rag, a popular Minneapolis Jazz and Ragtime Newspaper, as well as jazz club newsletters.

Dorothy was a paralegal with the federal government retiring in 1978. She previously worked as a legal secretary for Holme, Roberts, More and Owen, engineering secretary for Union Supply co, stenographic position for Hill Air Force Base and office of price administration for McClellan Stores.

Dr. Gerald J. Nemmers

Dr. Gerald J. Nemmers, age 83, of Washington died early Tuesday morning at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness.

Funeral Mass will be held at St. James Catholic Church in Washington on Friday October 1st at 11:00 am. Visitation will begin noon Thursday September 30th at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7:00 – 9:00 Thursday evening. A memorial has been established for the Washington County Hospital Endowment Fund.

Dr. Nemmers was born September 10, 1921 in LaMotte, Iowa the son of Michael C. and Faustina (Moran) Nemmers. He married Rosemary (Monie) Ehred August 30, 1945 in Forrest City, Iowa. He is survived by his wife Rosemary of Washington and four sons, Dr. Stephen J. Nemmers of Milton, MA., Mark A. Nemmers of Washington, IA., Todd Nemmers, Belle Plaine, IA., and Matthew Nemmers of Lehigh Acres, FL. One daughter survives Dedra A. Anderson of Highlands Ranch, CO. Dr. Nemmers is also survived by nine grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.

Dr. Nemmers was a member of St. James Catholic Church, YMCA and a 35 year member of the Y’s Mens club. He was a lifetime member of the Iowa Medical Society, member of the American Medical Society ,Washington Medical Society, Washington Golf and Country Club, Knights of Columbus and the Hideway Country Club in Ft. Myers, FL. He was also an active member of the morning coffee club and a member of the Washington County I Club for 56 years. He served in the Army during WW2.

Dr. Nemmers served the Washington Community as a Physician and Surgeon from 1948 until his retirement in 1987 during which time he delivered just under 3000 babies. He received his degree from Loras College in Dubuque and his Medical Degree from the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Herbert Osincup

Herbert Conklin Osincup, age 86, of Washington, Iowa died Wednesday September 15, 2004 at the Halcyon House following a prolonged illness.

Celebration of Herb's life will be held at a later date at the Shiloh Living Word Fellowship. Memorials have been established for the Shiloh Music Ministry and the Halcyon House Good Samaritan Fund.

Herb was born on April 24, 1918 in Waverly, Iowa the son of Lynn Chamberlin and Elsie May (Conklin) Osincup. He graduated from Waverly High School in Waverly, Iowa and then attended Cornell College in Mt. Vernon for two years. Herb graduated from the University of Iowa with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy. On August 24, 1940 he was united in marriage to Betty Jensen in Chicago, Illinois.

Herb was a Registered Pharmacist working for Biasi Drugstores in Bloomington, Illinois. He owned and operated Osincup Pharmacy in Washington, Iowa from 1947 until his retirement in 1986. Herb was active in many civic groups including: Rotary, Masonic Lodge, Jaycees, Kiwanis, Y’s Mens Club, YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, the Iowa Pharmacy Association (IPHA) and the American Pharmacy Association. He was past president of the Washington Chamber of Commerce, President of his Pharmacy Senior Class, past president of Y’s Mens Club and a 50 year member of the Iowa Pharmacy Association. Herb was honored to receive the Jaycee’s Boss of the Year.

Herb is survived by his wife Betty of Washington, IA; four daughters Donna K. Schultz or Iowa City, IA; Nancy E. Roselund of Canyon Country, CA; Janet C. Hurley of Miami, FL; and Elyse E. Chapman of Kalona, IA. He is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents and one brother Dr. Paul William Oscinup.

Lola G. White

Lola Glynne (Coppock) White, age 87, of Washington died Saturday, September 11, 2004 at the Brownlee Health Care Center in Washington.

Celebration of her life will be held 11:00 AM Monday, September 20, 2004 at the United Presbyterian Church in Washington with Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Interment will follow services in the Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth. Visitation will be held from 11:00 AM until 6:00 PM Sunday at the Jones – Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 2 until 4 PM Sunday. Memorials in memory of Lola have been established for Hospice of Washington County, United Presbyterian Church or Brownlee Health Center.

Lola Glynne White was born August 24, 1917 in Lansing, Michigan the daughter of William Homer and Carrie Edith (Rowan) Coppock. Lola graduated from Ainsworth High School and attended Simpson College in Indianola, Iowa and Roosevelt University in Chicago, Illinois. On June 5, 1938 she married Boyd White in Ainsworth, Iowa. Lola lived in Washington from 1938 to 1947. She than lived in Quincy, Ill and later Arlington Heights, Ill returning to Washington in 1989. She had a passion for life and music. She was an independent piano teacher, accompanist, church organist, children’s choir director and bell choir member. Lola received a Simpson College Loyalty Award in 1994. She was a avid Cubs Baseball Fan.

Lola is survived by 5 daughters, Marilyn Sansom of Canterbury, England; Gwendolyn Ying of Washington, Iowa; Margaret Reich of Scheneetady, New York; Betty Miller of Des Moines, Iowa; and Kathleen Parkhurst of Ithaca, New York; eight grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Lola is also survived by a two sisters Annetta McConnell of Washington, Ia, Margaret Bowen of Lewiston, N.Y Georgia. One brother survives Harry Coppock of Lewiston, N. Y.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Boyd; three brothers, Homer Coppock; Phillip Coppock; and Russell Coppock, and one sister Velma Barrineau.

Betty M. Zehr

Betty M. Zehr, age 80, of Washington, Iowa died Saturday September 4, 2004 at her home following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 AM Wednesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Boyd officiating. Visitation will begin noon Tuesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7:00 - 8:30 Tuesday evening. Memorials have been established for the Washington County Hospice. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa.

Betty was born October 6, 1923 in Washington County, Iowa to George and Nellie (Schneider) Chalupa. She attended country school in Washington County. On October 28, 1948 she was united in marriage to Lawrence D. Zehr in Monmouth, Illinois.

In her earlier years, Betty worked at the Telephone office in Washington, Iowa. She later worked at the Ordinance Plant in Berkley, California during the war. After raising her family she did housekeeping at the Washington County Hospital for eleven years.

Betty is survived by a daughter - Rhonda Martin & husband Kenneth of Washington, IA; a son Larry "Cam" Zehr & wife Carma of Washington, IA; granddaughter Sarah Hoffert & husband Aaron of Wayland, IA; granddaughters Caitlyn Zehr and Courtney Zehr of Washington, IA; grandson Dean Clevenger of Richmond, VA. Betty is also survived by nine brothers and sisters including Jean Jacoby of Fullerton, CA; Donna Marsh & husband James of Washington, IA; Joanne Swift & husband Marion of Washington, IA; Darrell Chalupa & wife Wilma of Ainsworth, IA; Carl Chalupa & wife Martha of Washington, IA; George Edward Chalupa & wife Virginia of Washington, IA; Douglas Chalupa & wife Annette of Washington, IA; Geraldine Farrier of Washington, IA; and Vicki Anderson of Washington, IA.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 2000, three sisters - Marjorie McKinstry, Virginia Houseal, and Margaret Frye and a grandson - Brian Witthoft.

Anna "Annie" Clark

Anna Elizabeth Clark, age 86, of Wellman, formerly of Washington died Friday September 17, 2004 at the Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Wellman, Iowa after failing in health for the past six months.

Funeral Services will be held 2:30 pm Monday, September 20, 2004 at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington with the Rev. Kitch Shatzer officiating. Visitation will begin 11:00 AM Sunday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 11:00 am – 6:00 pm on Sunday. Interment will take place at the Pleasant Grove Cemetery in Sigourney, Iowa. Memorials have been established to the Alzheimers Association, United Presbyterian Home or Parkview Home in Wellman, Iowa.

Anna Clark was born July 19, 1918 the daughter of Ernest and Amanda (Bankey) Neumann in Sigourney, Iowa. She attended country school in Washington County. On January 13, 1940 she was united in marriage to Forrest Alton Clark in Lancaster, Missouri. Anna lived all of her life in Washington, Sigourney and Wellman, Iowa.

Anna was a homemaker and also provided baby sitting service in her home. She was employed in the Maintenance Department of the M.L. McCreedy Home for 23 years until her retirement in 1994. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Washington, Iowa and a former member of the Moose Lodge in Davenport, Iowa. She enjoyed gardening, playing cards, bingo and fishing.

Survivors include one son James R. Clark and wife Rosi of Davenport, Iowa; 4 grandchildren: Julie Vest and husband Jim of Wellman, Iowa; Jay Clark of Gurnee, Illinois; Robin Clark of Yuma, Arizona; and Christopher Clark of St. Joseph, Michigan. She is also survived by 3 great grandchildren: Jamie Vest of Wellman, Iowa; J.J. Vest of Wellman, Iowa; and John Clark of Eustis, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Alton in 1976, one son John Clark in 1998 , Sister – Gertrude Eddie, brother – Albert Neumann, an infant sister and a special friend – Paul Long.

Charles W. "Bud" Droll

Charles W. “Bud” Droll, age 75, of Ainsworth, Iowa died Monday October 18, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City following a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday October 23, 2004 at the Ainsworth Community Church in Ainsworth, Iowa with the Rev. Scott Nesbitt officiating. Visitation will begin 9:00 AM Friday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the family will receive friends from 6:30 – 8:00 Friday evening. Interment will follow services in Oregon Township Cemetery in Ainsworth, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the Ainsworth Volunteer Fire Department /First Responders or the Ainsworth Opera House. .

Bud was born June 8, 1929 in Richmond, Iowa the son of Lawrence C. and Agnes Julia (Wulf) Droll. He attended school in Washington and Ainsworth. On July 15, 1950 he was united in marriage to Alice Howell in Washington, Iowa. Bud worked for Ainsworth Community Feed for 18 years, and in Agricultural Sales for Arco/First Miss Inc. Bud drove for Max White & Sons Inc. until his retirement. Following his retirement he worked for Randy Morrison Trucking and United Suppliers. He was a former Ainsworth Volunteer Fireman, served on the Ainsworth Town Council, was a supporter of ACT (Ainsworth Community Together) – helping in renovation of the Ainsworth Opera House and other community projects. Bud enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, traveling, Casino Trips with H.U.G.S., and making wooden crafts for his children and grandchildren. He especially enjoyed picnics, family gatherings and loved spending time outdoors; mowing and doing yard work. Bud lived most of his life in Ainsworth, Iowa.

Charles is survived by his wife, Alice Droll of Ainsworth, Iowa; 5 daughters, Sherrie Hazen-Hansen & husband Jim of Ainsworth, Iowa; Chris Sieren & husband Dick of Washington, Iowa; Laurie Haeder of Des Moines, Iowa; Jennie Reschly & husband Todd of Washington, Iowa, and Bev Skovgard & husband Jim of Kimball, Nebraska, 11 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, sister, Norma Kallaus of Riverside, Iowa; sister, Mabel Wood & husband Joe of Ainsworth, Iowa; brother, Don Droll of Monte Vista, Colorado, sister, Joanne Thom of Portland, Oregon; brother, Marvin Droll & wife Karen of Concrete, Washington; and sister, Marilyn Lewis & husband Terry of Elko, Nevada. He is also survived by step brothers, Buel Meeks & wife Rosemary of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Bob Meeks & wife Joanne of Des Moines, Iowa; Mark Meeks & wife Kate of Iowa City, Iowa, and step sister-in-law Mary Meeks of Washington, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Marie Boileau; step father, Orval Meeks, and 3 step brothers, Everett, Leon, and Cecil Meeks.

Rev. Richard (Rick) Dunn

Rev. Richard (Rick) Dunn, age 62, of West Chester, died Saturday, October 23, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following an extended illness.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 PM Wednesday – October 27, 2004 at the West Chester United Methodist Church with Dr. J. Robert Burkhart and Dr. David Schuldt officiating. Visitation will begin noon Tuesday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM Tuesday evening. In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established in memory of Rev. Dunn for the West Chester United Methodist Church or the American Kidney Foundation. Burial will be at a later date in the Waukee Cemetery, Waukee, Iowa

Rev. Dunn was born December 26, 1941 the son of Walter and Nova (Drummond) Dunn. He graduated from Keokuk High School in Keokuk, Iowa. He also graduated from Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary in Evanston, Illinois.

He is survived by one daughter Marsha Dunn and fiancé Paul Talley of Manchester, Iowa; three sons Brian Dunn of Glenwood, Iowa; Scott Dunn of West Des Moines, Iowa; and Andrew Dunn of Lincoln, Nebraska. Rev. Dunn is also survived by his parents Walter and Nova Dunn of Waukee, Iowa and one brother Nathan Dunn and his wife Becky of Adel, Iowa. He is also survived by many other relatives.

Rev. Dunn served as minister for the West Chester United Methodist Church the past four years. He has served churches in Tennessee, Illinois and the following churches in Iowa: West Grove-Drakesville, Lohrville-Rinard, Cottonwood, Finley Chapel, Wayland, Meservey-Thornton, Glenwood, Primghar, and West Chester.

William "Bill" L. Eastwood

William “Bill” L. Eastwood, age 53, of Wellman, Iowa died Thursday, October 28, 2004 at his residence in Wellman following complications from Congestive Heart Failure.

Memorial services will be held at 4:00 PM Saturday, November 6, 2004 at the Jones – Eden Funeral Home in Washington. Visitation will begin after 1:00 PM Saturday at the funeral home where the family will be present to receive friends until time of services. Cremated remains will be buried with honors soon after services, at the National Cemetery in Rock Island, Illinois. Private family graveside services will be delayed until several family members can return from Iraq. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund in memory of Bill has been established for Paws & More/Humane Society in Washington to honor his love of animals. Memorial contributions may be left at the funeral home.

Bill was born on January 23, 1951 in Portageville, Missouri the son of James and Dorothy Bowen, and Paul Eastwood. He attended school in Missouri and served honorably in the United States Marine Corps and later for many years in the Iowa National Guard. Bill was employed by Adrian Trucking in Richland, Iowa.

He is survived by his siblings, Kathie (Jackie) Smith of Washington, Iowa; Karen (Robert) Gee of Richmond Hills, Georgia; Karla (Louis) Herman of West Des Moines, Iowa; Karmell Bowen of Coralville, Iowa; James (Lisa) Bowen of Washington, Iowa; Kimberly (Terry) Grote of Dawsonville, Georgia; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his paternal grandparents, Ezra and Lillie Bowen, his maternal grandparents, Walter and Janie Fox, and a sister, Kara Susan Bowen.

Bill was a kind hearted and generous fellow who never missed an opportunity to pass the time of day with his many friends and acquaintances. He was greatly loved and will be dearly missed.

Dr. Milton Flickinger

Dr. Milton Flickinger, age 84, of Washington died Saturday November 13, 2004 at the Washington County Hospital following complications of Parkinson’s Disease.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 AM Friday, November 19, 2004 at the Jones – Eden Funeral Home in Washington with the Rev. Charles Visser officiating. Interment will follow services in the Fern Cliff Cemetery in rural Wayland, Iowa. Visitation will begin after 9:00 AM Thursday at the funeral home where the family will be present to receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 Thursday evening. Memorials in memory of Dr. Flickinger have been established for Fern Cliff Evangelical Free Church, Lending Hands or to Parkinson’s Research.

Dr. Flickinger was born on March 22, 1920 in Aurora, Iowa the son of Ray and Fern (Rathbun) Flickinger. He graduated from Independence High School, attended Junior College in Independence, and graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Veterinary Medicine. On July 30, 1950 he married Carol F. Meeker in Des Moines, Iowa. Dr. Flickinger was a resident of Washington, Iowa since 1947. He practiced Veterinary Medicine in Washington until 1980.

Dr. Flickinger was a captain in the United States Army during World War II serving in Berlin, Germany. He served on the Board of Supervisors from 1980 until 1988. He was a former member of Kiwanis and attended the Fern Cliff Evangelical Free Church in rural Wayland. He enjoyed nature and was active in conservation practices.

Dr. Flickinger is survived by his wife, Carol Flickinger of Washington, Iowa; son, Mark Flickinger of Mason City, Iowa; daughter, Jana Dawson and husband Tom of Washington, Iowa; son , Scott Flickinger of Des Moines, Iowa; 5 grandchildren, 1 brother, Robert Flickinger and wife Ann of Lynchburg, Virginia; 2 sisters, Helen Tucker and husband Avery of Oelwein, Iowa; and Betty Fonken and husband Wayne of Carbondale, Colorado

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Lora J. Goodlander

Lora Jemima Goodlander, age 94, of Washington died November 4, 2004 at the Washington County Hospital following a brief illness.

Celebration of her life services will be held 10:30 AM Monday, November 8, 2004 at Jones - Eden Funeral Home with the Rev. Don Collings officiating. Friends may call after 12:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Burial will follow services in the Elm Grove Cemetery.

Mrs. Goodlander was born in rural Pulaski, Davis County, Iowa on October 17, 1910 the daughter of Joseph M. and Lorannah (Morris) Rees. She married Max Goodlander in Fairfield in 1926. She attended Bloomfield High School. She has been a resident of Washington, Iowa since 1929. Mrs. Goodlander worked in the art department of McCleery Cummings for a number of years. She also worked as a sales clerk in Spurgeon’s until retirement. Along with her husband Max, she raised turkeys on the farm and acreage on the North edge of Washington. She enjoyed camping, fishing, boating, crocheting and crafts.

She is survived by three sons, Joe and wife Rosamond of Washington, Iowa; Lee of Fayetteville, Arkansas; John of Washington, Iowa, 8 grandchildren, 20 Great Grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Max in 1984, her parents, 3 brothers, Waldo, infant Clyde and Bernie, 2 sisters, Dova Sutton and Ruby Dixon.

Sandra Lee "Sandy" Harrill

Sandra Lee (Sandy) Harrill, age 55, of Washington, Iowa died Thursday October 14, 2004 at her residence following injuries suffered in a fire.

Memorial services for Sandy and her grandson Taylor will be held 7:00 PM Thursday October 21, 2004 at the Jones Eden Funeral Home with the Rev. James Cluney officiating. Visitation will begin 9:00 AM Wednesday, October 20th, at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Wednesday. In lieu of flowers a general memorial has been established.

Sandra Lee Harrill was born April 16, 1949 in Everglades City, Florida the daughter of Samuel Clyde and Mary Vera (Everett) Williams. She graduated from Ft. Myers High School in Ft. Myers, Florida.

Sandy moved to Washington, Iowa in October of 1997 where she was working at Casey’s General Store. She had previously worked at Hardee’s, Winga’s Restaurant and 2001 Video. Sandy loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

Sandy is survived by six children: Daughter Carol Vonnahme and husband Jeff of Washington, Iowa; Son John David Harrill of Ft. Myers, Florida; Son Samuel Wesley Harrill and wife Dawn of Washington, Iowa; Daughter Megan Harrill and friend Jim Jenkins of Washington, Iowa; Daughter Christina Harrill of Ft. Myers, Florida; Daughter Stephanie Jones and husband Robert of Washington, Iowa; 13 grandchildren and a sister Wanda Vera Williams of Ft. Myers, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one daughter Angel Lee England and her grandson Taylor Harrill.

Taylor Wesley John Harrill

Taylor Wesley John Harrill, age 9, of Washington, Iowa died Thursday October 14, 2004 at his families residence following injuries suffered in a fire.

Memorial services for Taylor, and his grandmother Sandy, will be held 7:00 PM Thursday October 21 at the Jones Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa with the Rev. James Cluney officiating. Visitation will be held at the Jones Eden Funeral Home beginning 9:00 AM Wednesday where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 Wednesday evening. In lieu of flowers a general memorial has been established.

Taylor was born on December 26, 1994 in Ft. Myers, Florida to Mary Megan Harrill. Taylor was in the third grade at Stewart Elementary in Washington, Iowa.

He is survived by his mom Megan Harrill and friend Jim Jenkins of Washington, Iowa and two brothers Alex Lopez and Tijon Harrill both at home. Taylor is also survived by several aunts and uncles including aunt Carol Vonnahme and husband Jeff of Washington, Iowa; uncle John David Harrill of Ft. Myers, Florida; uncle Samuel Wesley Harrill and wife Dawn of Washington, Iowa; aunt Christina Harrill of Ft. Myers, Florida; and aunt Stephanie Jones and husband Robert of Washington, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his grandmother Sandra Harrill, great grandparents Grace and Leon Harrill and Samuel and Vera Williams and a great aunt Ann Tallent.

Walter E. Horning

Walter E. Horning, age 89, of Washington died Thursday morning at Washington Care Center following a lengthy illness.

Graveside services will be held at 2:00 PM Saturday, October 16, 2004 at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. No visitation is scheduled. The Jones - Eden Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. A memorial has been established for Hospice of Washington County.

Walter was born July 18, 1915 the son of Elmer E. and Emma (Hines) Horning in Washington County, Iowa. He married Mildred Oldfield in Kahoka, Missouri on September 6, 1938. He was a life long resident of Washington County and farmed in the Washington community.

Walter is survived by his wife Mildred Horning there are two daughters Dorothy Bagnell of Davenport, IA and Carol Hesseltine of Washington, Ia. Eight grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren survive and brother William Horning of Washington, Ia..

He was preceded in death by parents, daughter Joan Horning, grandson Sam Hesseltine and sister Hazel Springman.

Marie Howsare

Marie Howsare, age 84 of Indianola, Iowa, formerly of Crawfordsville, Iowa, died Tuesday November 23, 2004 at the Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa after failing in health for the past year.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 AM Saturday November 27, 2004 at the Jones Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa with the Rev. Skip Rushing officiating. Visitation will begin at noon Friday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 Friday evening. Interment will take place at the Crawfordsville Cemetery in Crawfordsville, Iowa. Memorials have been established for Mercy Hospice in Johnston, Iowa.

Marie was born on February 16, 1920 in Crawfordsville, Iowa the daughter of James L. and Hazel Mae (Hamil) Welch. Following graduation at Crawfordsville High School, Marie graduated from the Paris Beauty Academy in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. On March 10, 1948 she was united in marriage to Gerald Raymond Howsare in Burlington, Iowa. Together they resided on farms and acreages in Crawfordsville, Ainsworth, Columbus Junction, and in Indianola where they have lived the past five years.

In her earlier years, Marie worked in a beauty shop in Washington, Iowa. She was a 70 year member of the American Legion Auxiliary and a 70 year member of Eastern Star (White Shrine) in Washington, Iowa. She was currently a member of the United Methodist Church in Indianola, Iowa.

Marie is survived by her husband Raymond of Indianola, Iowa; son – Galen Howsare and wife Katherine of West Des Moines, Iowa; and son – Kirk Howsare and wife Debra of Indianola, Iowa. She is also survived by four grandchildren; Anne, Mark, Austin and Brooke.

She was preceded in death by her father, mother and step-father, John Glenn Cherryholmes.

Ardie L. (Red) Lovick

Ardie L. “Red” Lovick, age 77, of Washington, Iowa died Tuesday October 26, 2004 at the United Presbyterian Home following complications of Parkinson’s Disease.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Saturday October 30, 2004 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington, Iowa with the Rev. Brian Gentz officiating. Visitation will begin after 2:00 PM Friday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7:00 – 8:30 Friday evening. Interment with military rites will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the Lending Hands Adult Day Care or to the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Washington.

Ardie was born July 7, 1927 in Fertile, Iowa the son of Henry O. and Ida (Hanson) Lovick. After graduating from high school, Ardie graduated from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa in 1951. Ardie served in the United States Navy during World War II. On June 7, 1952 he was united in marriage to Juanita Badger in Montezuma, Iowa. He was a resident of Washington, Iowa since 1967.

In his earlier years he was a Vocational Agriculture and Shop teacher at Mingo, Iowa from 1951-1956. He was then a Feed Mill operator for ten years and later worked for Kaiser Fertilizer Company in Keota, Iowa from 1966 – 1972 where he was District Manager. Ardie owned the Sears Catalog store in Washington, Iowa for 13 years. For 14 years Ardie was employed by the Washington Community School District as a school bus driver and at the same time was a self employed furniture restorer and owner of Washington Prairie Antiques.. Ardie was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church serving on the Church Council for six years and he was also a member of Washington Kiwanis A.Mer’s, and the Southeast Iowa Antique Car Club since 1971. He enjoyed working on his “57” Chevy and Cushman scooter.

He is survived by his wife Juanita “Nita” Lovick of Washington, Iowa; son, Steven K. Lovick and wife Emily of Ft. Smith, Arkansas; daughter, Debra Jo Rees and husband Loren of Boone, Iowa; and daughter, Robyn Marie Feik and husband Jim of Letts, Iowa; 6 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild; 3 brothers, James Lovick and wife Alvera of Fertile, Iowa; Leo Lovick and wife Marlys of Ackley, Iowa; Larry Lovick and wife Diane of Forest City, Iowa; and 5 sisters, Murlette Hagen of Lake Mills, Iowa; Pearl Hanna of Clear Lake, Iowa; Alice Toresdahl of Clear Lake, Iowa; Elaine Ollenburg and husband Bob of Ventura, Iowa; and Doris Bonnstetter and husband Frank of Clear Lake, Iowa.

Ardie was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Karl in 1997; one brother, Paul; and two sisters, Amy Brakke and Irene Brakke.
