Frances Evelyn King

Frances Evelyn King, age 89, formerly of (Washington, IA, Danville, IL, and Cedar Rapids, IA) passed away at 2:50 PM on June 22, 2005 at Hospice of Arizona in St. Luke’s Medical Center, Phoenix, AZ of a short illness. She has lived in Mesa, AZ since 1997 with her daughter.

She was born July 16, 1915 in Washington County, IA, the daughter of Charles H. and Mellie (Beitel) Harvey. She graduated from Washington High School in 1934. After graduation, she worked at the Button Factory in Washington, IA. She then worked as a telephone operator until 1954 in both Washington, IA and Danville, IL. She married Gilbert Reed King on September 3, 1950. She became a full time home maker in 1954. She later volunteered at the Cedar Rapids Senior Center and attended the Mesa, AZ Senior Center.

She is survived by her daughter, Susan Hobbs of Mesa, AZ, granddaughters Hilary Hobbs and friend Claude Massicott, and Shammara Hobbs and fiancé Ethan Howell, of Phoenix, AZ, and great-grandson Jaeden Devon Howell of Phoenix, AZ. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters (Myra L. Donaldson and Hettie Irene Russell), and brothers (Jesse R. Harvey and Charles Franklin Harvey).

Frances was a former member of the United Methodist Church in Washington, IA. She delighted in spending time with her family and especially her great grandson. She loved to work in her garden and tend to her beautiful variety of flowers. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends.

A Celebration of Life funeral will be held for Frances at 11:00 am Monday, June 27, 2005 at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington, IA. Visitation will be from 9:00AM until time of services. Emily Koenigsacker

Emily N. Koenigsacker, age 58, of Washington, Iowa died Saturday 2 July, 2005 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics following an arduous and courageous battle with cancer.

The Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington is handling the arrangements.

A Funeral Mass will be offered for her Soul at St. James Catholic Church in Washington on 8 July at 11:30 a.m. by The Reverend Father Edward O'Melia, Pastor.

Memorials may be directed to the family's Parish at St. Patrick's Parish 1404 Castelar Street, Omaha, NE. 68108.

Emily was born 24 March, 1947 (The Feast of St. Gabriel the Archangel) at home just north of North Liberty, Iowa the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Herring Sr. She graduated from Clear Creek High School. Later she received an Adn. Degree in Nursing, and immediately earned her Professional Distinguished Registered Nurse License from the State of Iowa. On 28, September 1978, Emily was united in marriage to Daniel P. Koenigsacker in the Danforth Chapel on the grounds of The State University of Iowa.

Professionally, Emily carried out her Faith and Professional Training as a Registered Nurse at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics for fourteen years (with St. Gabriel's guidance). The preponderance of her Professional Career was spent in Patient Care in the Intensive Pulmonary Care Service.

Emily was a:Wife;Mother;Homemaker;"Grounds Keeper" and "handyman" at her home; and above all a Christian Registered Nurse. She and her husband are members of St. Patrick's Parish in Omaha, Nebraska, where they attend the Centuries Old Latin Rite of the Holy Roman Catholic Church. Emily practiced the Christian Virtues of Compassion, Charity, and Love at work and in the home. Every person for whom she assisted Professionally became part of "her family", and was treated as such. Emily financially supported her Parish and it's Schools. She and her husband made daily Prayers the Core of their lives. They made Pilgrimages to the Carmelite Cloistered Carmel of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in Nebraska for Holy Week in 2003,2004 and 2005.

Emily is survived by her husband Daniel P. Koenigsacker and son Phiilip A. Koenigsacker of Washington, Iowa. She is also survived by three brothers and four sisters including: Paul (Tim) Herring; Robert Herring of Marion, Iowa; John Herring of Iowa City, Iowa; Elsie Martin of Iowa City, Iowa; Irma Herring of Iowa City, Iowa; Geraldine Gassman of Maryland and Helen Davis of Arkansas.

She was preceded in death by her parents Paul Herring Sr. and Hazel (Miller) Herring as well as her brother Glen Herring and two sisters Wilma Ferguson and Mary Ann Luederman.

Patricia J. "Pat" Lechner

Patricia J. “Pat” Lechner, age 77, of Washington died sudden and unexpectedly Monday, July 25th at the Washington County Hospital.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:00 am Thursday, July 28th at the St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Father Ed O’Melia officiating. Visitation will begin at noon on Wednesday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 Wednesday evening. Pat was born July 29, 1927 in Newman Grove, Nebraska the daughter of Leonard “Con” and Mary (Larson) Flynn. She attended the Red Brick country school in Washington County and graduated from Washington High School in 1945. Pat later attended Cosmetology College in Des Moines, Iowa. On November 9, 1947 she was united in marriage to Norman “Bud” Lechner in Washington, Iowa.

Pat managed the gift section of Lechner’s Ace Hardware in Washington, Iowa for many years. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church and enjoyed flowers, auctions, antiques, attending flea markets, traveling, reading, walking and spending time with her companion – Maggie, the cat.

Pat is survived by her husband W.N. “Bud” Lechner of Washington, Iowa; five children including son, John Lechner and wife Debbie of Kirksville, Missouri; daughter, Mary Christine Ajzenmen and husband Paul of New Orleans, Louisiana; daughter, Patricia Watson and husband Terry of Sandy, Utah; daughter, Clare Ann Isaacson and husband Treg of Seattle, Washington; daughter, Sara Joan Witt and husband Jack of Covington, Michigan; and nine grandchildren. Pat is also survived by two brothers, Mike Flynn and wife Nancy of Scotch Grove, Iowa and David Flynn and wife Christine of Center Junction, Iowa as well as two sisters Irene Becker and husband Bob of Kalona, Iowa and Evonne Merz and husband Dan of Harper, Iowa and several nieces and nephews.

LeRoy Letts

LeRoy Edward Letts, age 71, of Allerton, Iowa formerly of Washington, passed on after a lengthy illness in his home on Sunday, September 18, 2005.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, September 23, 2005 at the Jones-Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa. Visitation will be held at the Jones-Eden Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 22, 2005 with the family present to receive friends. Interment will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington.

LeRoy was born January 14, 1934 in Gillette, Wyoming, the son of Edward and Mildred (Bair) Letts. He enjoyed spending time helping friends and family. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and carpentry work. He is survived by his eight children, Don Hesseltine and wife Cindy of Keota, Doug Hesseltine and wife Nita of Washington, Dave Hesseltine and wife Jennifer of Clarksville, Tennessee, Darrell Hesseltine and wife, Shirley of Washington, Duncan Hesseltine and wife, Diane of Iowa City, Leroy Letts and wife Renee´ of Fairfield, Roger Letts and wife Lisa of Washington and Joanne Smith and husband Jeff of Keota. He is also survived by his sister, Louise Crawford of Corydon, brother Earl Dwight Letts and wife Dolly of Des Moines, and brother Dareld Letts and wife Barb of Mt. Pleasant. He has 22 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Mildred Letts.

O. Darlene Marek

O. Darlene Marek, 76, of Washington, Iowa died Wednesday September 21, 2005 at her residence in Washington following a lengthy battle with cancer.

Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:00 am Saturday, September 24, 2005 at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington, Iowa with Pastor Grant Nebel officiating. Interment will take place at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona, Iowa. Calling hours will be held from 2:00 until 5:00 Friday afternoon at the funeral home. O. Darlene Marek was born on July 7, 1929 in Kalona, Iowa the daughter of Paul and Ednabell (Simpson) Marek. She lived in New Jersey for fifteen years where she worked as a housekeeper and nanny but lived the majority of her life in Washington, Iowa. Darlene attended the Washington Mennonite Church. She enjoyedembroidery, needlepoint, puzzles, and loved visiting with people.

Darlene is survived by 3 brothers, Dave Butterbaugh and wife Barb of Washington, Iowa; David “Guy” Orr and wife Patty of Florida; Leonard Marek of Colorado; 2 sisters, Mary Ross and husband Earl of Iowa City, Iowa; Marge Gorsuch of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; and a number of nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Jean, Dorothy, and Alverta; also one brother, Everett.

Gwen H. Nelson

Gwen H. Nelson, 96, of Washington, Iowa died Thursday, June 30, 2005 at Halcyon House following an eight month illness.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Friday, July 1, 2005 at the United Methodist Church in Washington with the Rev. Julia Poulsen officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to services at the church. Interment will follow services at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Gwen was born July 6, 1908 the daughter of Leonard K. and Mary (Crane) Hatch in Central City, Iowa. She graduated from Central City High School and later from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Gwen taught school until the time of her marriage. On June 6, 1932 Gwen was united in marriage to Theron M. Nelson in Central City. She lived in many locations including; Nebraska, Illinois and Iowa. Gwen was a resident of Washington, Iowa since 1960. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Washington where she was very active serving on many commissions and taught Sunday School for 15 years. Gwen was a Den Mother for the Boy Scouts all the years her boys were in scouts, a member of the League of Women Voters where she served as President, Women’s Society, Library Board, and Eastern Star for many years. Gwen served as a volunteer at Halcyon House.

Gwen is survived by two sons, J. Craig Nelson and wife Lois Lee of Town & Country, Missouri; Clark M. Nelson and wife Marilyn of Alamo, California; 5 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Laurence and Gordon Hatch; and one sister, Dorothy Hatch.

Donald J. Reschly

Donald J. Reschly, 79, of Washington died Sunday August 21, 2005 at the Washington Care Center following a decline in health.

Graveside services with Military Honors will be held 10:30 am Wednesday August 24, 2005 at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington with Dave Stoufer officiating. A memorial has been established for the American Legion Armed Forces Tribute in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Donald was born March 11, 1926 in rural Wayland, Iowa the son of Josie Nebel and Anna Christine (Hunt) Reschly. He graduated from Wayland High School. Donald served in the United States Army at the rank of T-4 Corporal during World War II. On February 12, 1950 Donald was united in marriage to Ruth Askea at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. He worked as a Bricklayer – Mason for Seedorff Masonry in Strawberry Point, Iowa for 17 years. Donald attended the First Christian Church in Washington. He enjoyed wood working and feeding birds.

Donald is survived by his daughter, Patricia Patterson of Kalona, Iowa; son, Roger and wife Susan Reschly of Okoboji, Iowa; son, Timothy Reschly of Seattle, Washington; a grandson Michael Patterson and a granddaughter Amy Vasquez and husband Mark; one great granddaughter – Peyton Patterson; two brothers, James Reschly; Robert Reschly; two sisters, Alice Davis; and Susan Gilmere all of Washington, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife in 1994; 2 sisters, Catherine Reschly; Joanna Reschly; and 1 brother, Richard Reschly.

Kenneth White

Kenneth H. White, age 93, of Washington, Iowa died Thursday September 15, 2005 at the Halcyon House in Washington after failing in health for several months.

Funeral services will be held 3:00 pm Sunday, September 18, 2005 at the Jones-Eden Funeral Home. Visitation will begin 11:00 am Sunday at the Jones- Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 on Sunday afternoon. Interment will take place at the Hillcrest Cemetery in Cumberland, Maryland on Tuesday, September 20, 2005. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County.

Ken was born on September 4, 1912 in Crawfordsville, Iowa the son of Harry H. and Sarah (Ritchey) White. He graduated from Crawfordsville High School in 1930 and later graduated from Mortuary College in St. Louis in 1933. Ken was united in marriage to Willa M. “Billie” Young on June 19, 1966 in Washington, Iowa. He was previously married to Fanny Wilson who preceded him in death.

Ken was raised in Washington County and then lived in Maryland and Ohio. He returned to Washington, Iowa in 1977. He worked as the general manager of the Stein Funeral Home in Cumberland, Maryland and later worked as a sales representative for the Crane and Breed Casket Company in Cincinnati, Ohio for a number of years. After returning to Washington, Iowa he worked as a funeral director at the Jones Funeral Home. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the Navy from 1942-1945.

Ken is survived by his wife Willa “Billie” White of Washington, Iowa; two daughters Cathy Lloyd and husband Jim of Washington, Iowa; and Julie Knopf and husband Fred of Long Island, New York; four grandsons, two granddaughters as well as five great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Fanny, and two daughters Sandra White and Sharon Kish.

John Waters

John Lester Waters, age 80, of Washington died Sunday, March 1, 2009 at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington following a brief illness.

Graveside services will be held 10:00 am Thursday, March 5th at the Elm Grove Cemetery with Father Rich Adam officiating. Visitation will begin 1:00 pm Wednesday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 Wednesday evening. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for Hospice of Washington County or the M.L. McCreedy Home. John was born August 2, 1928 in Iowa County the son of John A. and Rose (Monaghan) Waters. He attended school Kinross and Richland. On July 26, 1947, John was united in marriage to Lois Hoyle in Washington, Iowa.

John owned and operated the Furniture Barn in Washington for 18 years until his retirement in 1994. Prior to that he worked for a trucking company. John was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a member of the Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by one son, Tom Waters and wife Karen of Kalona; one granddaughter Lisa Waters and her children Cheyanne Bush, Savannah Stout and Sierra Stout; and one grandson Jared Waters and wife Christina and their children Bryce, Jenna and Katelyn Waters.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in 1994, two sisters Susie Dougall and Helen Ann Birney, one brother Lowell Waters and an infant sister Mary Jospehine Waters.

Virgil Smith

Virgil C. Smith, age 85, of Urbandale, Iowa died Monday, March 16, 2009 at the United Presbyterian Home due to complications of Parkinson's.

Virgil’s body has been donated to the University of Iowa deeded body program and services will be held at a later date. Interment will take place at a later date at the Friends Cemetery near West Branch, Iowa. Memorials have been established for the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research at Tribute Gifts, Church Street Station, P.O. Box 780, New York, New York 10008-0780. Virgil was born May 7, 1923 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of William and Ethel (Curley) Smith. He graduated from Iowa City High and also from the University of Iowa. He later attended school at Drake University. On July 19, 1947, Virgil was united in marriage to Alice M. Pemberton near West Branch, Iowa.

Virgil lived most of his married life in the Urbandale area until he and Alice recently moved to Washington. He was District Manager of Preferred Risk Mutual Insurance Company and following his retirement he owned and operated the Des Moines Barrel and Drum Company. Virgil was a member of the Urbandale Lions Club and served on the Urbandale School Board where he was President for several terms.

He was the loving devoted husband to Alice Smith currently of Washington, Iowa; the caring, loving father of Dr. Douglas P. Smith and fiancé Susan Hradsky of Austin, Texas and Jeanne L. Woodbury and husband Jerry of West Chester, Iowa; grateful grandfather of Jeremy D. Smith, Abbie Smith and Douglas Smith. May he rest in peace knowing he was loved by friends and family.

Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Leon I. Smith and one granddaughter Angie Smith.

Laura Romine

Laura Mary Romine, age 87, of Washington died Tuesday December 23, 2008 at University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:00 am Saturday December 27, 2008 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Father Paul Appel officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm Friday at Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Friday evening. Prayer services will be held at 7:30 pm Friday at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Wellman Cemetery in Wellman. A memorial has been established to St. James Catholic Church. Laura was born on September 22, 1921 in Riceville, Iowa the daughter of Louis and Grace (Green) Kehoe. She attended school in Wellman where she graduated from high school in 1938. Laura was united in marriage to Hubert Romine on December 29, 1944 in Pensacola, Florida. She was a resident of Washington since 1968. She previously lived in Brighton. Laura was a secretary at Livingston & Day Law Firm. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington, Catholic Daughters, and the American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed spending time with her family.

Laura is survived by her daughter, Mary Lou Hanley of Lakewood, Colorado and Washington, Iowa; son, Thomas Romine of Englewood, Colorado; son, Brian Romine and wife Margaret Bryson of St. Croix – U.S. Virgin Islands; son Robert Romine of Melbourne, Florida; six grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1984; sister, Helen Kehoe; brother, Joseph Kehoe; two infant sons, William and James; son-in-law, John Hanley; and one daughter-in-law, Diane Romine

Hubert Redlinger

Hubert W. Redlinger, age 102, of Washington, Iowa died Wednesday December 17, 2008 at the M.L. McCreedy Home following a decline in health.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:30 am Monday, December 22nd at the St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Fr. Paul Appel officiating. Visitation will begin 11:00 am Sunday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 5:00 – 7:00 Sunday evening. Prayer services will be held 7:00 pm Sunday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for St. James Catholic Church.

Hubert was born May 16, 1906 in Kinross, Iowa the son of Matt J. and Catherine M. (Lutz) Redlinger. He attended school in Washington, Iowa. He served in the 113th Calvary from 1923 until 1927. On June 14, 1930 he was united in marriage to Leonida E. Pieper in Richmond, Iowa.

Hubert lived all of his life in Washington County where he farmed northwest of Washington. He also worked as a substitute mail carrier and postal worker for 41 years. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington and was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 80 years where he was a Third and Fourth Degree Knight.

Hubert is survived by three sons: Robert Redlinger and wife Sharon; James Redlinger and wife Mary; Joe Redlinger and wife Karen all of Washington, Iowa; 22 grandchildren; and 56 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Leonida in 1997; one grandson – Dan Redlinger, three brothers Ray, Earl, and Matt Redlinger and two sisters Alphonsa Berg and Beatrice George.

Clarence Randall

Clarence Glen Randall, age 86, of Washington died Friday December 19, 2008 at his residence in Washington following a short illness.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday December 23, 2008 at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Rev. Linda Foor officiating. Visitation with the family present to receive friends will be held from 12:00 pm until 2:00 pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment with Military Honors will take place at Columbus City Cemetery in Columbus City. A general memorial has been established. Clarence was born on January 23, 1922 in Havre, Iowa the son of Charles and May B. (Tucker) Randall. He attended country school in Washington County. Clarence was united in marriage to Marilyn J. Nicola on March 2, 1946 in Kahoka, Missouri. Clarence lived most of his life in Columbus Junction. He also lived in Wayland, Keota, and Washington. Clarence owned a television shop in Wayland for a short time. He later worked as a farm hand in Columbus Junction for several years. He drove school bus and was a custodian at Conesville Schools before retiring. Following his retirement he enjoyed taking care of his grandchildren.

He was a member of the Christian Church in Washington, was a Veteran of World War II serving in the Army Air Corp where he was an MP. He was a member of the American Legion. Clarence enjoyed square dancing, doing needlepoint, playing marbles and cards with family and friends, and attending his grandchildren’s school activities.

Clarence is survived by his daughter, Judy M. Zaugg of McKinney, Texas; eight grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; and two brothers, Claude F. Randall and wife Maxine of Fairfield; and Robert Randall of Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marilyn in 2006; one son, Jon in 1974; one sister, Cora Mae Sabin; and one daughter, Janice Bergen in 2004.

Clay Goode

Clay E. Goode, age 91, of Washington, Iowa died Sunday February 1, 2009 at the Washington County Hospital following a short illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 10:30 am Thursday, February 5, 2009 at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home with Pastor Darryl Carr officiating. Visitation will begin noon Wednesday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 7:30 Wednesday evening. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington. Memorials have been established for Washington County Hospice or the Halcyon House.

Clay was born October 15, 1917 in Bloomfield, Iowa the son of Blaine and Cressie (Bowling) Goode. He attended school in Bloomfield, Iowa. On August 9, 1941, Clay was united in marriage to Lorena Hess in Lancaster, Missouri.

Clay lived all of his married life in Washington County. He farmed in the Wellman area and was a Territory Manager with Cargill Seeds. He later worked as a salesman for DeKalb Seed Company. Clay later started an independent seed business which he operated for many years. He attended the First Baptist Church in Washington. He enjoyed golfing and in his younger days he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He is survived by his wife Lorena Goode of Washington, Iowa; one brother Harlan Goode of Ankeny, Iowa and a number of nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters- Iola Goode and Laona Goode; an infant brother; and a sister-in-law – Zelda Goode.

Marjorie Embree

Marjorie L. Embree, age 94, of Washington died Wednesday, December 17, 2008 at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington following an extended illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 1:30 pm Monday December 22, 2008 at the Jones Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Rev. Colton Clay officiating. Visitation will begin 11:00 am Sunday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 Sunday afternoon. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. A memorial has been for Hospice of Washington County.

Marjorie was born July 10, 1914 in Washington, Iowa the daughter of Delbert C. and Viola Ruth (Pratt) McDole. She attended school in Washington and graduated from Washington High School. On November 30, 1935, Marjorie was united in marriage to Everett Lysle Embree in Sigourney, Iowa.

Marjorie was a life resident of Washington. She was co-owner of Embree’s South End Grocery from 1970 to 1975 and had previously worked as a bookkeeper for Spurgeon’s. She enjoyed crocheting and knitting. She was an avid reader and enjoyed working on crossword puzzles.

She is survived by three sons, Max D. Embree and wife Gretta of Washington; Donald Embree and wife Linda of Washington; Philip Embree and wife Tina of Washington; 10 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren and 1 sister Shirley A. Hampton of Tustin, California.

Marjorie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 2000, and 4 brothers Richard, William, Pat, and Robert McDole.
