Alice (Reschly) Davis

Alice Reschly Davis, age 86, of Washington died Friday February 20, 2009 at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington following a short illness.

Celebration of life services will be held 1:30 pm Monday February 23, 2009 at the Salem Welsh Presbyterian Church in rural Columbus Junction.

Visitation will begin at 11:00 am Sunday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington where the family will receive friends from 2:00 pm until 4:00 pm.

Interment will take place at Cambrian Cemetery. Memorials may be direct to Salem Welsh Church or to Cambrian Cemetery.

Alice was born on January 15, 1923 on her family’s farm south of Wayland, Iowa the daughter of Joseph and Anna Christina (Hunt) Reschly.

Alice attended country school in Henry County and graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1940.

She completed her two year certificate at Iowa State Teacher’s College in Cedar Falls, Iowa in 1946.

In 1950 Alice graduated from Goshen College in Goshen, Indiana with a Bachelor’s degree in English.

In 1962 Alice graduated with a Masters degree in English from the University of Iowa.

She taught at Sommers School in rural Washington County from 1941-1942, Crawford School in Henry County from 1942-1943, Wyman Community Schools from 1943-1949, West Chester High School from 1950-1952, Wyman High School from 1952-1954, Hesston High School in Hesston, Kansas from 1954-1959, was a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Iowa from 1959-1961, and taught English and Spanish at Rochester Junior College from 1961-1976.

She was united in marriage to Donald Lee Davis at his home north of Wyman, Iowa on August 15, 1976.

Alice was a member Delta Kappa Gamma Women Teachers Sorority, and Salem Welsh United Presbyterian Church.

Alice is survived by her husband Donald Davis of Washington; brother, James Reschly and wife Helen of Washington; sister, Susan Gilmere and husband Harold of Washington; sister-in-law, Sonja Mullens Reschly of Mt. Pleasant, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, siblings, Joanna Reschly; Donald Reschly; Richard Reschly; Catherine Reschly Fort; Robert Reschly; and her sister-in-law, Ruth Askea Reschly.

John Butler

John R. Butler, age 90, of Washington died Sunday April 12, 2009 at Halcyon House in Washington following a sudden decline in health.

Mass of the Resurrection will be held 10:30 am Thursday April 16, 2009 at St. James Catholic Church in Washington with Father Paul Appel officiating. Visitation will begin at 12:00 pm Wednesday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 Wednesday evening.

Prayer services will be held at 7:30 pm on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Interment with Military Honors conducted by United States Air Force and Washington American Legion Post 29 will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established to Washington Community Theater, St. James Church, or the Halcyon House.

John was born on May 5, 1918 in Ward, Colorado the son of John R. and Laura (Graef) Butler.

John graduated from Regis High School in Denver and later attended the University of Colorado at Boulder.

John was united in marriage to Wilma Wolf on February 29, 1944 in Denver, Colorado.

John was in banking in Lytton, Iowa before he served his country in the United States Air Force during World War II.

He was a Sgt. in the 30th Infantry, and a 2nd Lt. in the Air Force. John’s plane was shot down over Leipzig, Germany and was held as prisoner of war at Stalagluft 3, Germany. After the service John worked for Helm’s Bakery in Culver City, California.

John later owned a general store with his brother-in-law, Cal Wolf, in Lytton, Iowa.

In 1948 they purchased the West Chester Savings Bank in West Chester, Iowa where John was owner and executive vice president.

John was a member of St. James Church, Knights of Columbus, Washington Community Theater Inc., Y’s Men, Lions Club, Washington Golf and Country Club, and served on many community service organizations. John enjoyed music, and dancing, and he was an avid golfer. To his friends, colleagues, and customers he was honest, fair, loyal, and professional.

Most importantly, he was a family man, a devoted and loving husband, father, and grandfather.

John is survived by his wife, Wilma Butler of Washington; three daughters, Mary Martin and husband Gary of Newton, Iowa; Patricia Filer and husband Michael of Seattle, Washington; Anne Harrison and husband Jim of Sarasota, Florida; seven grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; and one brother, James Butler and wife Maureen of Sun City, Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Thomas Butler and William Butler.

Infant Twins Brown

Infant twins born prematurely to Pastor Joseph and Charity Brown died on Saturday February 14, 2009 at University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Private family services will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington at a later date. The Jones – Eden Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements.

Survivors include parents, Pastor Joseph and Charity Brown of Washington; maternal grandparents, Steve and Bonita Epley of Wayland; paternal grandparents, Pastor Larry and Dianne
Brown of Washington; maternal great grandparents, Clettus and Glena Garrett of Hawesville, Kentucky; Bess Epley of Hawesville, Kentucky; paternal great grandparents, Dallas Norman of Kernersville, North Carolina; and Ruby Brown of Walkertown, North Carolina.

Elizabeth Griggs

Elizabeth Griggs, 94, of Washington died Sunday, March 2, 2003 at the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, March 5, 2003 at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington with the Rev. Rick Dunn officiating. Interment will take place in the Wellman Cemetery in Wellman, Iowa.

Visitation will begin after 12:00 PM Tuesday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home where the family will be present from 7:00 to 8:30 PM.

Memorials in memory of Elizabeth have been established to the West Chester United Methodist Church in West Chester or to the M.L McCreddy Home in Washington.

Elizabeth Griggs was born May 24, 1908 in Wellman, Iowa the daughter of Lauren and Audley (Waite) Fleming.

She married Earl Roland Griggs on June 26, 1926 in Wellman, Iowa. Mrs. Griggs was a lifetime resident of Washington County.

Elizabeth worked with her husband in Griggs Produce in West Chester from 1930 to 1969. She was also a homemaker. She loved decorating her home, cooking, her family and ceramics.

Elizabeth is survived by 1 daughter; Jeaniene Dusenbery and husband Kenneth of West Chester, Iowa, 2 granddaughters; Sue Kos and husband Kevin of Kalona, Iowa, Julie Dusenbery of West Chester, Iowa, 4 great grandchildren; Jerica Tracy of Kalona, Iowa, Braden Kos of Kalona, Iowa, Trenton Kos of Kalona, Iowa, and Greta Kos of Kalona, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1983, 2 brothers and 1 sister.

June Nicola

June Palmer Nicola age 73 of Washington died Wednesday evening March 12, 2003 at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, Iowa following declining health the past year.

Celebration of life services will be held 11 Am Monday at the Shiloh Church in rural Kalona, Iowa.

Friends may begin calling at the Jones Eden Funeral Home 10 Am Sunday where the family will be present from 2 to 4 PM and 7 to 8 PM Sunday.

June was born November 21, 1929 in Bangor, Maine the daughter of Walter A. Palmer and Mildred Ward Palmer. She married Robert Nichola July 2, 1950 in Washington.

June is survived by a daughter Rachel Nicola and husband Dave Stauffer of Washington and son Timothy Nichola of Chicago, Ill.

She is also survived by a sister Patricia Creamer and her husband LaRonso of Sorrento, ME and brother William Palmer and his wife Vivian of Brookville, MD.

There are also a number of nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death were her parents, husband Bob, November of 2001 and a brother Walter Palmer.

June graduated from Bangor, Maine High School and attended the University of Iowa from 1948 to 1949.

She returned to the University of Iowa after many years and completed her B.A. degree in 1995.

June was a member of the Shiloh Church in Kaona. She was a member and past president of chapter J. - P.E.O.

She was a certified Red Cross diving instructor She served as a board member and past president of the YWCA board, was a member and past president of the Music Boosters as well as S. A. L. (Specialty Advertising Ladies).

She was active in many volunteer organizations and enjoyed traveling and her family.

Oscar (Bill) Nordyke

Oscar Edwin "Bill" Nordyke age 90 of Washington died Monday March 17, 2003 at the United Presbyterian Home following a 3 month illness.

Funeral Services will be held at the Jones Eden Funeral Home 10:30 AM Wednesday with Rev. Edward Philgreen.

Visitation will be held from noon to 9 PM Tuesday with the family being present from 7 to 8 PM.

Bill was born November 22, 1912 in Leon, Iowa the son of Ernest and Emma E. (VanWinkle) Nordyke.

He was married June 22, 1940 to Doris Albeta Matthews in Washington, Iowa.

He is survived by two daughters Connie Pence and husband Gary and Kathy Wallace and husband Joe both of Washington.

There are 3 grandchildren Jennifer Pence Morgan; Joey Wallace and Jill Wallace and 5 great grandchildren; Maggie, Dylan, Jordan, Joshua, and Alexis.

He is also survived by a 2 Sister in Laws Maurine Mills and husband Gilbert of Washington and Ina Nordkye of Colorado. He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers, Marion Leroy, Wallace Perry and Walter David and 6 sisters, Ethel May McNelley, Edna Pearl Bain, Grace Deloras Sharlow, Dorotha Marie Argo, Wilma Bernice Nordyke and Beulah Fern Davis.

Bill came to Washington County in 1931 where he worked as a farm hand for the Karl Libe and Milford Anderson families.

He was employee as a mechanic for 34 years until his retirement in 1975.

After retirement he worked as a custodian at the United Presbyterian Home in Washington for 15 years.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church and past member of the I.O.O. F. Lodge.

A general memorial has been established.

Pauline (Polly) Kueneman

Alice Pauline (Polly) Kueneman, age 75, of Washington died Thursday March 27, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospital following a brief illness.

Funeral Mass will be held 2:30 PM Monday at St. Mary's Assumption Catholic Church in Riverside, Iowa.

Visitation will be held at the Jones Eden Funeral Home in Washington from 10:00 AM until 9 PM Sunday where the family will be present after 2 PM Sunday.

A prayer service will be held at 7:30 PM Sunday evening at the funeral home.

Polly was born May 2, 1927 in Wellman, Iowa the daughter of Ray C. and Birdina (Vowk) Miller. She married Harold Kueneman January 21, 1948 in Riverside, Iowa.

Polly is survived by 3 sons; Murray Kueneman of Washington; Gary and wife Dorothea Kueneman of Kalona and Richard Kueneman of San Francisco, CA.

A sister Edith Simmering and husband Don of Washington also survives. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Harold in August of 2002 and 2 brothers.

Polly was a homemaker and owned and operated with her husband, Harold's Standard Service, in Ainsworth for over 30 years.

She also worked at the Washington Care Center for a number of years.

She was a member of the Friendship Club in Washington and enjoyed cooking, baking and her family.

Pauline graduated from Washington High School in 1946.

Keith B. Williams

Keith B. Williams, age 72, died April 1, 2003 at the M. L. McCreedy Home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be held 4:00 PM Sunday, April 6, 2003 at the Jones Eden Funeral Home.

The family will be present to receive friends from 2:00 - 4:00 PM on Sunday.

Interment will take place at Elm Grove Cemetery at a later date.

Memorials have been established to the M.L. McCreedy Home in Washington.

Keith was born October 6, 1930 in Sigourney, Iowa the son of Keith B. and Ruth (Adkins) Williams Sr.

He graduated from Washington High School and attended Washington Junior College.

Keith was an independent insurance agent for 20 years before retiring in 1992.

In his earlier years, he worked for Jewel Tea Company for 17 years.

He was a member of the First Christian Church, the Odd Fellows, Kiwanis Club, and the Washington Jaycee Club in his younger years, and the Washington Golf and Country Club.

He was an avid fisherman and golfer.

He married Audra O'Connor July 2, 1949 in Washington.

He is survived by his wife Audra of Washington and children; Michael Williams and wife Diane, Fulton, MO; Jeanne Boardman, Glamis, CA; Mary Hall and husband Leonard, Rockville, MD; and Joe Williams and wife Brenda, Collierville, TN.

There are 7 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother Gene Williams and wife Connie of Mendota, Ill and sister Pat Goff and husband Brad of Washington, Ia.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Dave one month ago.

Mary A. Hahn

Mary A. Hahn, 93, of Washington died Monday, March 31, 2003 at the Washington County Hospital following a lengthy illness.

Graveside services will be held 1:30 PM Thursday, April 3, 2003 at the Crawfordsville Cemetery in Crawfordsville. Interment will take place in the Crawfordsville Cemetery. Friends may begin calling at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home after 12:00 PM on Wednesday. A memorial in memory of Mary has been established to the United Church of Crawfordsville.

Mary was born on October 6, 1909 in Crawfordsville, Iowa the daughter of William and Magdalene (Zimmer) Eisele. She graduated from Crawfordsville High School. On August 8, 1936 she married Alvin Hahn in Monmouth, Illinois. Mary worked for the Burlington Ordinance Plant and at McClerry Cummings Company for many years. She also drove a gravel truck for the family business. Mary was a resident of Washington, Iowa since 1975. She was a member of the United Church of Crawfordsville.

Mrs. Hahn is survived by 1 sister; Edna Custer of Washington, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1975, 4 brothers, and 1 sister.

Jesse Lloyd Stout

JESSE LLOYD STOUT, age 85, died peacefully, at the home of his son Stephen, on Monday, April 7th. He was surrounded by his loving family. A Celebration of Jesse’s life will be Friday, April 11th at 10:00 AM at the Jones Eden Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Boyd officiating. His grandchildren will be serving as pallbearers. Visitation will begin noon Thursday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends from 4:00 – 7:00 PM Thursday. There will be a Rebekah Lodge service at the funeral home at 7:00 PM Thursday. Memorials may be made to the ODD Fellows Eye Care.

Jesse was born July 21, 1917 to Jesse Thomas and Daisy McGee Wallace. His mother died in childbirth and he was adopted by Taylor and Glennie Goodman Stout. He spent his childhood on a farm Northeast of Brighton, Iowa. He attended country school and graduated from Brighton High School. He later attended Parson’s College in Fairfield, Iowa.

He married Bonnie Louise Elmore on March 11, 1939 in Freeport, Illinois. They raised their three sons, Lloyd, Douglas and Stephen on the family farm in the Havre Community, where he tended to the land for 42 years. In the winter months he also drove semi. Most recently he drove for Burke Cleaners in Washington, Iowa.

Jesse was very active in the ODD Fellows Encampment Number 6 in Fairfield, Iowa. He joined the lodge in 1945. He held many local and state level offices. He was also a member of the Rebekah Lodge, joining in 1978 and attending meetings faithfully.

He is survived by his three sons; Lloyd Stout and wife Luz Stella of Denham Springs, Louisiana, Douglas Stout and wife Hannah Sue, and Stephen Stout and wife Diana of Washington, Iowa. Jesse is also survived by eleven grandchildren, Fred Stout of Baton Rouge, LA; Angie Stout, Bonnie and Keith Williams and Jimmy and Shana Stout all of Denham Springs, LA; Craig Stout of Iowa City, IA.; Jason Stout and Calista Stout, Matthew Stout, Charity and Robert Gathright all of Washington, IA; Spec 4 David S. Lewis currently serving in Iraq and Sgt. Dominique Lewis of Beaufort, South Carolina. Six great grandchildren – Breanna Stout of Denham Springs, LA; Kyle, Reagan, Zacary Stout and Tyler and Trevion Gathright all of Washington, IA. One sister, Vermiella Jarvis and husband Carl of Washington, IA; brother-in-law – Roy Rogers and sister-in-law – Maxine Ledger both of Fairfield, IA and sister-in-law – LaVern Wallace of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Bonnie in 1986, and a grandson Martin Stout in 1976.

Orlena Peters

Orlena Peters, age 84, of Washington died Tuesday March 10, 2009 at Halcyon House in Washington after declining in health.

Celebration of life services will be held 1:00 pm Friday, March 13, 2009 at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home in Washington with Pastor Harald Gruber officiating. Visitation will be held from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm Thursday at the Jones - Eden Funeral Home. Interment will take place at the Oak Ridge Cemetery in rural Washington County. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Washington County, Halcyon House, or to Faith Baptist Church in Washington. Orlena was born on August 25, 1924 in Washington County, Iowa the daughter of George and Clare (Singleton) Augustine. She attended country school in White Oak and graduated from Washington High School. She then attended Parson’s College in Fairfield. Orlena was united in marriage to Arthur Peters on August 10, 1958 in West Chester, Iowa. She taught school in West Chester and at Mid Prairie for many years. Orlena was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Washington. She enjoyed traveling and going on bus trips with her friends. She kept herself busy with her church activities.

Orlena is survived by her step daughter, Betty Gray of Smith Center, Kansas; step granddaughter, Michelle Haven of Smith Center, Kansas; two step great grandchildren; and several cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband in 1981.
