Edith Toms

Edith Ione Toms, 92, formerly of Wapello, died Monday evening, May 14, 2001, at Colonial Manor in Columbus Junction.

Born April 24, 1909, in Wapello, she was the daughter of Henry and Daisy Fowler Wagg. She married Harry G. Toms on Dec. 14, 1937, in Muscatine. He died Aug. 26, 1996.
Mrs. Toms attended the Harrison rural school and graduated from Wapello High School in 1929. She lived for a time in Florida and worked at a dime store. She later farmed with her husband.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Sunshine Club, both of Wapello. She was an energetic person in many homemaking activities, including cooking, refinishing furniture, upholstering, gardening, raising chickens and entertaining guests, as family came to visit from many parts of the country.

Survivors include two daughters, Grace Toms of East Moline, Ill., and Helen Machuta of Downers Grove, Ill.; seven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law; one sister-in-law; and several nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one son and four brothers.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Friday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home in Wapello, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Toms will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Mary N. Pugh officiating. Burial will be in Fulton Cairo Cemetery , rural Morning Sun. A memorial has been established for her church.

Violet Nelson

Violet Elizabeth Nelson, 85, of Keokuk, died Thursday, June 14, 2001, at River Hills Village in Keokuk.

Born Nov. 14, 1915, near Argyle, she was the daughter of James and Violet Scovern McCarty. After the death of her parents, she was raised by her aunts, Frances and Mahala Scovern. She married Laurence E. Nelson on May 29, 1940, near Argyle. He died Sept. 5, 1997.
Mrs. Nelson was a graduate of Argyle High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College, where she earned her teaching degree. She taught at Columbia, Eagle and Nashville Township schools in Lee County for eight years and at Wells Carey Elementary School in Keokuk for 17 years, retiring in 1982.

She was a member of Melrose United Methodist Church, the Women's Circle of the church and the Retired Teacher's Association. She served on the Jackson Township election board for 10 years.

Survivors include one daughter, Kristin Whitaker of Keokuk; one son, Alan Nelson of Keokuk; one granddaughter; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her aunts and four brothers.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday at Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Nelson will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Melrose Untied Methodist Church, with the Rev. John Abraham officiating. Burial will be in the Scandinavian Cemetery in rural Keokuk.

A memorial has been established for her church.

Melvin Breuer

Melvin F. Breuer, 79, formerly of Kirkwood, Ill., died Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at LaMoine Christian Nursing Home in Roseville, Ill. Arrangements are pending at Prugh Family Funeral Service.

Caroll Rodeffer

Caroll Joann Rodeffer, 67, a lifelong resident of the LaHarpe, Ill., area, died at 5 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, 2001, at LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center, after a brief illness.

Born Oct. 10, 1933, in LaHarpe, Ill., she was the daughter of William Edward and Fern Hensley Hobby. She married Richard L. "Jiggs" Rodeffer on June 15, 1951, in Bloomington, Ill.
Mrs. Rodeffer was a 1951 graduate of LaHarpe High School. She and her husband farmed near LaHarpe until retiring and moving into LaHarpe.

She was a lifelong member of LaHarpe Christian Church, teaching the toddler Sunday School class for many years and serving in many other ways. She enjoyed playing golf, cards and games and attending ball games and track meets, especially when her grandchildren were playing. She loved being with her family and friends.

Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Janet Martin of Ursa, Ill.; two sons, Steve Rodeffer of LaHarpe and Max Rodeffer of Hamilton, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; two sisters, Lucille Doyle of Burlington and Adelle Larson of Pleasant Plains, Ill.; one brother, Marvin Hobby of Burlington; one sister-in-law; and many other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother and one brother-in-law.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at LaHarpe Christian Church, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Rodeffer will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the church, with Robin Thompson officiating. Burial will be in LaHarpe Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for her church and LaHarpe-Davier Health Care Center.

Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe in is charge of arrangements.

Oleta Rich

Oleta Grace Rich, 100, Park Place Care Center, Mount Pleasant, died at 3:50 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001, at the care center.

Born Sept. 3, 1901, in rural Wayland, she was the daughter of Harlan Melvin and Edith Clara Egli Smith. In 1922, she married Nicholas Valentine Rich in Mount Pleasant. He died in June 1958.
Mrs. Rich was involved in home care in the Trenton area. She was a cook for Iowa Wesleyan College and the Sigma Epsilon Fraternity of IWC.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Mount Pleasant, American Baptist Women, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Rebekkah Lodge. She also served as Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include five sons, Marvin Rich of Findlay, Ohio, Dean Rich of Des Moines, James Rich of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., Edward Rich of Lockridge and Willis Rich of Fort Myers, Fla.; four daughters, LaVon Zear of Washington, Iowa, Lorraine Swanson of Madrid, Iowa, Joyce Stull of Mount Pleasant and Doris Hall of New Port Richey, Fla.; 30 grandchildren; six stepgrandchildren; 51 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Francis Smith of Mount Pleasant; and one sister, Mildred Kirk of Fort Myers.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and one sister.

Visitation will be from noon until 9 p.m. Monday at Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8 p.m. Family visitation also will be one hour prior to the service Tuesday at First Baptist Church in Mount Pleasant.

The funeral for Mrs. Rich will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, with the Rev. David Plooster officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant.

A memorial has been established for First Baptist Church.

Richard Springsteen

Richard Jack Springsteen, 78, of Burlington, died at 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 3, 2004, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Sept. 7, 1925, in Burlington, he was the son of Harry Lloyd and Bessie Esther Farrington Springsteen. On May 29, 1945, he married Sally Wirt in Burlington.

Mr. Springsteen drove a truck for H. B. Green for two years and Dohrn Transfer Co. for 30 years. He also worked at Pioneer Supply for ten years.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He was a member of the American Legion, AARP, and a previous member of the Burlington Gym. He enjoyed reading, gardening and was a dedicated St. Louis Cardinals fan.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Shirley Springsteen of Burlington; one son, Richard L. Springsteen of Burlington; two brothers, Larry Springsteen and Kenneth Springsteen, both of Burlington; five sisters, Virginia Coen, Helen Gantz, Beverly Dobson, and Lois Vera Everhart, all of Burlington, and Marjorie Reynolds of Mediapolis; four grandchildren; and one great–grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

The family will receive friends between 7 and 8:30 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church.

The funeral for Mr. Springsteen will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Frank Beaty officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for the National Parkinson Foundation and the Burlington Humane Society.

Victor Moeller

Victor "Vic" Maurice Moeller, 58, of Salem died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005, at Henry County Health Center in Mount Pleasant.

Born Oct. 21, 1946, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Albert and Mary Scharpman Moeller. On Aug. 21, 1982, he married Loretta June Baxter in Houghton.

Mr. Moeller worked for Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Houghton, the Altar and Rosary Society and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed helping on his brother's farm, was an avid tractor collector and loved auctions.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Leann Stoderl and Catherine Moeller, both of Salem; two grandchildren; six brothers, Marvin Moeller and Larry Moeller, both of Houghton, Darrell Moeller and Paul Moeller, both of Salem, Kevin Moeller of St. Charles, Mo., and Greg Moeller of Mount Pleasant; and three sisters, Marilyn Boecker of Burlington, Vera Glasscock of Fort Madison and Eileen Barnett of Salem.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one granddaughter.

A rosary will be recited at 3 p.m. with a wake service at 7 p.m. today at St. John's Catholic Church in Houghton. The family will receive friends from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral Mass for Mr. Moeller will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. John's Catholic Church, with the Rev. Gary Beckman officiating. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Church Cemetery.

Raymond Pearson

Raymond Kenneth Pearson, 93, of Bur–lington, died at 5:20 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 2005, at Great River Medical Center's Klein Center.

Born Aug. 7, 1911, in Keokuk, he was the son of the Rev. Nels and Anna Lindeberg Pearson. On Jan. 17, 1970, he married Jeannette Frances Freitag Schach in Rockford, Ill. She died June 22, 2003.

Mr. Pearson was vice president of First National Bank in Burlington.

He was a graduate of Burlington High School and the University of Iowa with an engineering degree. He was a lifetime member of the University of Iowa Alumni Association and a lifetime member of the Elks Lodge, where he served 17 years as treasurer. He was a World War II Army veteran, where he served in the European Theater. He was a member of First United Methodist Church, where he was treasurer for 17 years, American Legion, Burlington Golf Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10102, AARP and Keenagers.

Survivors include one son, David Pearson of Des Moines; one grandchild; two stepdaughters, Pam Schach of Altoona and Vickie Olson of Bettendorf; five stepgrandchildren; and three stepgreat–grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. today and 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Prugh's Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Pearson will be at 10 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Dennis Tevis officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162, American Legion Post 52, Hamilton–Walters Marine Corps League and AMVETS Post 29 will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established for First United Methodist Church.

Joann M. Jones

The funeral service for Mrs. Joann M. Jones, 67, who died Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2005, will be Saturday, February 12th, at 10:30 AM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. William Porter will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after noon today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 until 8:00 PM. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.

Jerry Tilton

The memorial funeral service for Mr. Jerry Tilton, 66, who died Wednesday, February 9, 2005, will be Saturday, February 12th, at 2:00 PM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. George Knox will officiate. Friends may call after 8:00 AM on Saturday, February 12th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends for one hour prior to the time of service. Moose rites will be performed at 2:00 PM. A memorial has been established for Community Hospices of America. According to Mr. Tilton's wishes, his body has been cremated.

Marilyn R. Riggle

The funeral service for Mrs. Marilyn Ruth Riggle, 72, who died Wednesday, February 9, 2005, will be Saturday, February 12th, at 10:00 AM in West Avenue Baptist Church. The Rev. Kirk Bennett will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after noon today in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. A memorial has been established for West Avenue Baptist Church.

D. Eugene Shaw

The funeral service for Mr. D. Eugene Shaw, 79, who died Thursday, February 10, 2005, will be Monday, February 14th, at 11:00 AM in Lunning Chapel. The Rev. Dr. Dennis Tevis will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery . Friends may call after 9:00 AM on Sunday, February 13th, in Lunning Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 2:00 until 4:00 PM. A memorial has been established for the Cancer Care Center of Great River Medical Center.

Lucille White

The funeral arrangements for Mrs. Lucille White, 95, who died Thursday, February 10, 2005, are pending in Lunning Chapel.
