SOUTH AMANA - Myrta Marie Schaefer was born January 31, 1921 in Frohna, Missouri, the daughter of Gottfried and Clara Vogel Mueller. She was baptized and confirmed at the Concordia Lutheran Church in Frohna. Myrta was united in marriage on April 25, 1948 to Victor Schaefer also at the Concordia Lutheran Church. The couple moved to Iowa County where they farmed and raised four children together. Myrta was employed at Bill Zuber’s Restaurant in Homestead for over 30 years until retiring in May of 2001. She was known for miles as the “Pie Lady”, most recently being featured in the Chicago Sun Times Paper. She was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead and the St. John’s Ladies Aide. Myrta died Sunday, December 30, 2001 at her home from a courageous battle of cancer at the age of 80 years. Myrta is survived by her husband of 54 years, Victor; four children: Grace Schaefer of Taunton, MA., Jane Welsh and husband Jim of Tipton, Julie Driscoll and husband Terry of Middle Amana and Joel Schaefer and fiancé Sue Wolfe of Williamsburg; three grandchildren: Lucas and Evan Schaefer and Kristina Welsh; a brother: Rueben Mueller and wife Norma of Frohna, MO.; a brother in law Ralph Schaefer and wife Esther of Ladora; two sister in laws: Alice Bier of Fresno, CA. And Lois Randolph of Belle Plaine; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends who were very special to her and hold a place in their hearts for her. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Harold, a brother and sister in infancy and a daughter in law Barbara Schaefer. Funeral services will be Wednesday, January 2, 2002 at the St. John Lutheran Church near Homestead, Iowa at 1:30 P.M. Officiating will be Rev. Wayne Woolery. Burial will be in the St. John Lutheran cemetery . Visitation will Tuesday, January 1, 2002 from 2:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials may be directed to the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home PO Box 269 in Williamsburg, Iowa 52361 for St. John Lutheran Church or Lutheran Interparish School Building Fund instead of flowers. “We cannot see her, but she is with us still. A Mother like ours is more than a memory. She is a living presence.”

Anton was preceded in death by his parents, wife Erna in 2000 and three sisters: Irene Martinson, Martha Vercande and Olga Huedepohl.

Mildred P. Striegel, age 87, of Keota, formerly of Harper, died Tuesday, January 15, 2002 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following a brief illness. Mildred was born February 28, 1914 in Clear Creek Township, Keokuk County, Iowa to John and Agnes (Hammes) Bombei. She received her education at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School. On February 28, 1935 she married Lowell H. Striegel at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Following marriage the couple lived in the Harper area where Mildred cooked for St. Elizabeth Catholic School and was the housekeeper for the parish priest for several years. In February of 1993 she entered Maplewood Manor. She was an active member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and volunteered at Maplewood Manor. Mildred enjoyed crocheting, gardening, cooking, sewing and spending time with her family. Survivors include seven daughters: Marlene and husband Larry Klein of Sigourney, Martha and husband Dominic Chiovaro of Des Moines, Shirley Shuda of Iola, Wisconsin, Elizabeth (Betty) Fry of Edmund, Oklahoma, Doris and husband Robert Lohrman, Jr. of Des Moines, Anna Mae Peiffer of Cedar Rapids, Rose and husband Rich Anderson of West Des Moines; 20 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; two sisters: Vera Greene of Keswick and Dorothy Conrad of Punta Gorda, Florida. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Lowell in 1968; two sons: LaVern and James Michael in infancy; two brothers: Irvin and Leonard Bombei and one sister: Alma Striegel. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 18, 2002 at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Interment will be in St. Elizabeth cemetery . Visitation with the family present will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m on Thursday, January 17, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m Thursday. Memorials may be directed to St. Elizabeth Catholic Church or Maplewood Manor.

Strohman, Mary Agnes
North English, IA
Mary Agnes Strohman was born on February 23, 1904 near Keswick, Iowa, a daughter of John and Mary Ellen Cunningham Dunn. She graduated from Keswick High School and attended Visitation Academy in Dubuque. Mary Agnes was united in marriage to Leo Ambrose Strohman on February 23, 1928 in Keswick. They made their home in the Keswick community where they farmed, owned and operated a hardware, implement and auto dealership. They moved to North English in the early 60's. Mary Agnes loved to read and be with her children and grandchildren. She became a resident of the English Valley Nursing Care Center in North English in August 1994. Mary Agnes died following an extended illness at the Care Center on Friday, January 25, 2002 at the age of 97 years, 11 months and 2 days. Mary Agnes is survived by a son Patrick Strohman of Melrose, Fl; 5 daughters: Martha Flynn of Rosewell, GA, Kathleen Grady of Peoria, IL, Sister Helen Strohman of Canton, MS, Rita Strohman of Urbandale, IA and Sheila Falk of Bloomfield, NJ; 26 grandchildren; 26 great grandchildren and a daughter - in - law Kathleen Strohman of West Des Moines. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, infant daughter Margaret Marie Strohman, son Joseph L. Strohman, a brother John Michael Dunn, grandson Michael Timothy Strohman and grand daughters Theresa Strohman and Kathleen Grady. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Tuesday, January 29, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. Rev. David Hitch will Officiate. Burial will be in the Armah cemetery near North English. Visitation will be held Monday at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English from 2 PM to 6:30 PM at which time a wake service will follow. A Memorial Fund has been established for Hospice of Iowa City, the English Valley Nursing Care Center Staff or MAD.CAAP Literacy Program, Sisters of Humility.

Collins, William
PARNELL - William J. “Bill” Collins was born January 14, 1948 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Leonard J. and Bernice G. Rogers Collins. He attended school in Parnell. Bill was a life long resident of the Parnell area. Where he was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Holbrook and farmed. Bill died Monday, March 18, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City of congestive heart failure at the age of 54 years. He is survived by two nephews: Mike Finnegan of Parnell and Mark Finnegan of Walford; two nieces: JoAnn Finnegan of Parnell and Juliann Dorothy of Hamilton, Illinois; and six great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Patricia Finnegan and a infant brother John Collins. Funeral services will be Thursday, March 21, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. in the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell. Fr. David Hitch will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Michael cemetery in Holbrook. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 P.M. Wednesday at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg were there will be a prayer service at 7:00 P.M.

HOUSEAL, ROBERT
January 16, 1923 - March 26, 2002
Wellman, Iowa
Robert John Houseal was born on January 16, 1923 in Columbus Junction, Iowa, a son of Isador Phillip and Anna Bennetta Quinn Houseal. He graduated from High School in Washington, IA and attended a junior college and the University of Iowa.. Robert served during World War II in the US Coast Guard. He was united in marriage to on May 11, 1945 in Keota to Kathryne Maxine Cupp. Robert owned and operated a radio/TV business in Wellman for many years and later was a realtor in both Iowa City and Wellman. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wellman where he served on the Building Committee, had served two terms on the Mid - Prairie School Board, was a member of the American Legion, the American Miniature Horse Association, the Farm Bureau, The Iowa City Area Association of Realtors and was a long time Ham Radio Operator. He died on Saturday, March 23, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following an extended illness. Robert is survived by his wife Maxine of Wellman, Iowa, 9 children: Jane Therme and her husband Tom of Iowa City, Iowa; John Houseal of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Kathy Bassett and husband Bob of Iowa City, Iowa; Linda Edkin and husband Frosty of Muscatine, Iowa; Phil Houseal and his wife Dawn of Fredericksburg, Texas; Mike Houseal and Beth of Wellman, Iowa; Mark Houseal of Phoenix, Arizona; Greg Houseal and his wife Ana of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and Amy Horesowsky and her husband Jeff of Kalona, Iowa; 25 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters: Grace McKune of Washington, Iowa and Ruth Kruse of Davenport Iowa; brothers Sam Houseal of Burlington, Iowa and Bill Houseal of St. Joseph, Michigan. He was preceded in death by his parents. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am Tuesday, March 26, 2002 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wellman with Fr. Rich Adam officiating. Visitation will be held from 3 PM to 6 PM Monday with a Rosary at 6 PM at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Burial and Military Rites will be in the Wellman cemetery . A General Memorial and a Parkinson Research Memorial Fund will be established.

Esther Helmuth was born February 17, 1954 in Millersburg, Ohio the daughter of Yost and Fannie (Gingerich) Miller. She attended the Peniel Holiness School. On Janurary 18, 1975 she was united in marriage to Floyd Helmuth at the Bethel Fellowship Church in Berlin, Ohio. They have resided in Kalona since 1976 where she has been a homemaker and co - owner with Floyd of Helmuth Repair. She was a member of the Sunnyside Mennonite Church, she has served on the CMC Sisters Fellowship Executive Committee, and was on several committees and was an active volunteer at the Pathway Christian School. She enjoyed spending time with her children, making quilts and tending to flowers. Esther died on Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at her home in rural Kalona of cancer at the age of 48 years. Esther is survived by her husband Floyd Helmuth; 4 children - Kristi, Brandon, Anthony and Lindsay Helmuth all of Kalona; her father - Yost Miller and wife Lizzie of Millersburg, Ohio; 4 brothers - Nelson Miller and wife Sara, Clarence Miller and wife Lois all of Millersburg, Ohio; Ellis Miller and wife Rita of Kidron, Ohio; Phil Miller and wife Paula of Millersburg, Ohio; and a sister - Priscilla Yoder and husband Harold of London, Ohio. She was preceded in death by her mother Fannie, and a infant sister Barbara.
A Memorial fund has been established for the Sunnyside Mennonite Church and the Pathway Christian School.

Jacob Y. (Jake) Rensberger, age 89, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, formerly of Wayland, died of cancer Wednesday, March 13, 2002 at his home in New Smyrna Beach. Jake was born on June 6, 1912 near Parnell, Iowa to Roy and Mamie (Yoder) Rensberger. On April 18, 1937 he married Clara Alice Roth. The couple farmed in the Wellman area until 1948 at which time they moved to their farm near Wayland, Iowa. After fourteen years of wintering in New Smyrna Beach, they moved there permanently in 1991. Clara passed away on October 3, 1993. On July 7, 2000 Jake married Joyce VanNortwick of Whitehall, Michigan. He was a member of the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church in Wayland. He attended the First Baptist Church of New Smyrna Beach and was a member of the Agape Sunday School Class and Young of Heart group there. For many years he volunteered at the church’s Twice Blessed Resale Shop. Jake was also a member of the Coronado and Mainland Shuffleboard Clubs and an officer of the Men’s Garden Club in New Smyrna Beach where he was instrumental in developing a partnership with the New Smyrna Beach Middle School. Survivors include his wife, Joyce of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; three children, Margaret Alice Miller and husband Devon of Indianapolis, Indiana, Donald Eugene Rensberger and wife Rachel Nolt of Canandaigua, New York, Kathy Meck Stewart and husband William of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; eight grandchildren, Milton Miller II, Mitchell Miller, PhD, Michael Miller, MD, Martin Miller, Andrea (Rensberger) Kurtz, Kristin (Rensberger) Rychener, David and Nancy Meck; three great grandchildren, Alex and Jonathan Kurtz and Landon Rychener; three step - children, Gary VanNortwick of Merrimack, New Hampshire, Jolene King and Rodney VanNortwick, both of Montague, Michigan; eight step - grandchildren; three step - great grandchildren; one sister, Virginia Roth of Kalona; one sister - in - law, Fern Rensberger of Orville, Ohio and one brother - in - law, Emery Wenger of Mt. Pleasant. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Clara; three brothers, Lloyd, Myron and Leonard and two sisters, Dorothy Eash and Ruth Litwiller.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Sugar Creek Mennonite Church.

Werner, Arnold Henry
July 15, 1915 - March 29, 2002
Williamsburg, Iowa
Arnold Henry Werner was born July 12, 1915 in York Township near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of John W. and Emilie Ristau Werner. Arnold was baptized August 29, 1915 in Immanuel Lutheran Church and Confirmed on April 13, 1930. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School and graduated from Williamsburg High School. He served in the U.S. Army during WW2. Arnold lived and worked in Anaheim, California for twenty five years. He worked for Kwikset Lock Company. In 1977 he retired and returned to Iowa. He enjoyed traveling, hunting and fishing. Arnold died on Friday, March 29, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, after a brief illness, at the age of 86 years. Arnold is survived by a brother John T. Werner of Williamsburg; a sister - in - law Minnie Werner of Williamsburg; four nieces and nephews: David Werner and wife Lois of Williamsburg - Marilyn Wichmann and husband Earl of Homestead - George Werner and wife Marlene of Williamsburg - Virginia Koester and husband John of Williamsburg; twelve grand nieces and nephews and eleven great grand nieces and nephews. Arnold was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Carl, two sisters - in - law: Olga Werner and Gertrude Werner and a nephew John F. Werner. Funeral services are set for 10:30 am, Monday April 1, 2002 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church with Rev. Richard Meyer officiating. Burial is in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery with military rites by the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797. Visitation is from 4:00 - 8:00 pm on Sunday at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home were there will be a VFW Service at 7:00 P.M.. Memorial s are for Lutheran Interparish School and Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Rollie W. Yoder was born October 19, 1914 in rural Iowa county near Parnell, Iowa the son of William M. and Lovina Edie (Yoder) Yoder. He attended the Poplar Grove rural school. On November 21, 1937 he was united in marriage to Ruth Esther Doolin at the West Union Mennonite Church in rural Parnell. He has lived all of his life in the Parnell community where he was a farmer. He was a member of the West Union Mennonite Church and the Farm Bureau. He enjoyed working with his mules and horses. Rollie died on Thursday, March 14, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness at the age of 87 years. Rollie is survived by a son - Les Yoder and wife Marilyn of Battle Creek Michigan; 3 daughters - Leanne Lantz and husband Merv of Tucson, Arizona; Jan Schulz and husband Mel of Parnell; Christine Stewart and husband Ron of Hazard, Kentucky; 9 grandchildren - Marshall Yoder, Cozette Wychers, Edie Leppert, Kristine Lantz, Aaron Schulz, Sara Carpenter, Jana Hawkins, Shad Stewart, Shane Stewart; 4 great grandchildren - Abigail, Elijah, and Elizabeth Wychers, Annalyn Leppert; and a sister - Cordelle Yoder of Salem, Oregon. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife in March of 1978; a brother - Merton Yoder; and 2 sisters - Velma Swartzendruber and Ona Yoder.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Wet Union Mennonite Church.
