She was born April 10, 1923, in Lee County, Iowa, near Keokuk, to Carl and Hazel Meyer Jeffers, and spent most of her life in SE Iowa. She graduated from Argyle High School in 1941 and married William (Bill) Auwaerter in Kahoka, MO, on May 9, 1942. Both worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Burlington, IA, during the war. In 1982, they retired and moved to Casa Grande, Arizona. Velma loved Arizona, but in 1995, after her husband's death, she moved back to Iowa to be near her friends and family. The farm, which meant so much to Velma and Bill, has been in the family for nearly 150 years and is operated today by their son, Dale.

Her other hobbies included playing cards, crafts, the Phoenix Suns, and staying in touch with her many friends and family. She was especially proud of her grandchildren and their many accomplishments. Her grandchildren, in turn, adored their grandmother and remained close to her in her declining years.

She suffered from Parkinson's disease for nearly 20 years and spent a year in the Montrose Nursing Home before moving to the Panora Nursing and Rehabilitation Center three years ago. In spite of her long battle with Parkinson's and the resulting complications from the disease, she remained alert, positive, and determined to never let her declining health dampen her love for life.

She was a member of the Montrose Presbyterian Church, the Casa Grande Presbyterian Church, and most recently joined the Peace Lutheran Church after she moved to Panora. She was a Worthy Matron of the Order of Eastern Star, a Kings Daughters member and active in many other community and church organizations.
