Gilbert James ("Chris") Christianson was born November 6, 1922 in Mason City, Iowa the son of Christian and Dovie (Flansberg) Christianson. He graduated from Mason City High School, attended Mason City Junior College and graduated from Drake University. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII. On November 19, 1944 he was united in marriage to Mary Louise Woolley in Mason City. Gilbert began his career in education as a teacher and lived in Churdan, Hartley, Perry, Eldora, Linn Grove, and Prairie City before moving to Wellman in 1971. He was a Principal and also served as coach for various, football, golf and Girls Basketball teams throughout his career. He was employed by the Mid - Prairie Community School District from 1971 until retiring in 1988. He was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, and the Elks in Perry. After retirement he relocated to spend time playing his beloved sport golf. Chris died on Wednesday, May 8, 2002 in Rifle Colorado. Gilbert is survived by his son James Christianson of Charlottesville, Virginia; his daughter Barbara Baumann of Dallas, Texas, his granddaughter - Tami Baumann Stallard of Mechanicsville, Virginia and his 2 grandsons, JeremyBaumann of Des Moines, Iowa and Brad Christianson of Charlottesville, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife Mary in March of 1994.
In Lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established fot Alzheimer's Research.

Robert Wayne Creamer was born March 13, 1946 in Muscatine, Iowa the son of Robert G. and Margaret (Schaaf) Creamer. He attended school in Fairport. On April 20, 1986 he was united in marriage to Alverda Kelley at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He lived in Muscatine before moving to Iowa City in 1986. He was a truck driver. He was a member of the Hope United Methodist Church, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1096, and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie #695. He enjoyed listening to country western music, watching rodeo’s and pro golf, he was an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan, and he enjoyed playing cribbage and working crossword puzzles. Robert died on Monday, May 6, 2002 at his home in Iowa City following a brief illness at the age of 56 years. Robert is survived by his wife Alverda of Iowa City; 4 children - Michelle Thomassen and husband Brad of West Salem, Wisconsin; Rachael Creamer of Anchorage, Alaska; Bob Creamer and wife Amanda of Iowa City; Eric Creamer and wife Sara of Muscatine; 5 grandchildren - Avery, Erin, Stephanie, Brittany, and Jacob; a sister - Crystal West Bell; and a sister - in - law - Sue Creamer Manning of Wilton. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.
A Memorial fund has been established for the Hope United Methodist Church, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1096 and the American Lung Association.

Glandorf, Elmer

Williamsburg - Elmer August Glandorf was born March 19, 1910 near Williamsburg in York Township Iowa County, the son of George and Dorothea Hagen Glandorf. He was baptized May 1, 1910 at Immanuel Lutheran Church and confirmed April 13, 1924 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School and St. Paul Lutheran School. Elmer also attended the National Radio School thru correspondence school from Washington D. C. receiving his diploma July 19, 1932. He lived on the farm until his parents moved to Williamsburg in 1923. Elmer was united in marriage to Dorothy Wille July 30, 1933 in Williamsburg. He worked for his brothers Art and William on the Galger place, which his father bought and also worked for his brother Anton on the home place. Elmer owned and operated Glandorf Electric and Appliances in Williamsburg until retiring in 1978. He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, an Elder, served on the Lutheran School Board and the Williamsburg School Board along with the cemetery board. Elmer died Wednesday, May 8 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City after a extended illness at the age of 92 years. He is survived by two daughters: JoAnn Russell and husband William of Central City and Eileen Smith and husband D.O. of Williamsburg; five grandchildren: William Russell, Barbara Pillard, Deborah Kula, Darrell Smith II, Cindiemarie Blair; seven great grandchildren and a great great grandson and a sister in law Esther Glandorf of Williamsburg. Elmer was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Dorothy; a son Harvey; four sisters: Amanda Iburg, Anna Doehrmann, Ella Glandorf and Ida Doehrmann; six brothers: Anton, Henry, Willie, Art, Oscar and Martin. Funeral Services will be Saturday, May 11, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg with Rev Carl Cloeter officiating. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran cemetery . Visitation will be from 4 to 8 P.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for the St. Paul Lutheran Church or American Diabetes Association.

Joann Mary Hennek was born January 8, 1937 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of William Leo and Ann Gallagher O’Meara. Attended Clarke College in Dubuque, Iowa receiving her BA in food and Nutrition. Joann married Robert Hennek April 17, 1971 in Parnell, Iowa. She worked and lived in Minnesota for a number of years before returning to Williamsburg in 1979. Joann worked for many care center facilities as a consulting dietician. She was a member of St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor and the Altar and Rosary Society. Joann became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English on March 28, 2002. She died Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at the Care Center at the age of 65 years from Cancer. She is survived by four nieces: Karen Jenson of Allen, Texas, Anne Wellington of Montgomery, MA.,Kelly O’Meara of Washington D. C. and Stacey LaPointe of Maynard, MA.; two cousins: Hugh O’Meara and Mary Wagner both of Williamsburg. Joann was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1989, three brothers: Francis, James and Gerald O’Meara. Funeral services will be Saturday, May 25, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. In St. Bridget Catholic Church in Victor, with Fr. Richard Okumu officiating. Burial will be at the ST. Mary Catholic cemetery in Williamsburg. A gathering of family and friends will be Friday, May 24, 2002 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Where there will be a rosary at 7:30 P.M., and Saturday from 9:00 A.M. until service time at the church. Memorials are for Systems Unlimited Group Home in Williamsburg.

Horras, Howard

KEOTA - Howard John Horras, age 84, of Keota, died Saturday, May 25, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness. Howard was born December 30, 1917 in Clear Creek Township near Richland, Iowa to Casper L. and Mary (Greiner) Horras. He grew up in the Clear Creek Community and received his education in rural school. On February 28, 1938, Howard married Dorothy Hammes at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. The couple lived and farmed north of Harper seven years, near Ollie for 30 years and retired to Keota in 1979. Howard was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota and Keokuk County Farm Bureau, where he served as secretary. He also was a 4th Degree Knight of Columbus, served on the FHA Board in Sigourney, was President of the Pekin School Board and was a charter member of the Church Council in Richland. Howard enjoyed his family, watching T.V., reading the newspapers and his cars. Survivors include his wife: Dorothy Horras of Keota; six daughters: Anna Mae Stewart and husband Tom of Davenport, Sandra McNamara of Urbandale, Betty Schott and husband Ron of Sigourney, Jana Sterling and husband Gary of Hedrick, Susan Stibal and husband Mike of Coralville and Cindy Hendrickson and husband Jeff of Coralville; two sons: Eddie Horras and wife Karen of Ollie and Thomas Horras and wife Lynnelle of Knoxville; 24 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; two grandchildren: Shannon Patrick Sterling and Shawn Howard Horras; three brothers: Walter, John and Albert and three sisters: Edna Hammes, Viola Weber and Elizabeth Striegel. Mass of the Resurrection is set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 28, 2002 at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Interment will be at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic cemetery in Clear Creek Township. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, May 27, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. Monday. Mary Hochstedler was born January 4, 1909 in Gohner, Nebraska the daughter of John and Eliza (Swartzendruber) Kempf. She grew up in Shickley, Nebraska and then moved to Iowa in 1930 and lived with her aunt Barb Swartzendruber and worked in Iowa City as a cook and a housekeeper. On December 24, 1931 she was united in marriage to Monroe S. Hochstedler at the home of Dan Fisher in Kalona, Iowa. She has lived in the Wellman community most all of her life where she was a homemaker. She was baptized in the Salem Mennonite Church in Shickley and later in the Jordon River with her husband. She was a member of the Kalona Christian Fellowship Church and was associated with Mennonite Renewal Services. Mary died on Thursday, April 25, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness at the age of 93 years. Mary is survived by 2 daughters - Rose Brenneman and husband Marlin of Iowa City; Iva Showalter and husband Don of Kalona; 3 sons - Keith Hochstedler and wife Elaine of Iowa City; Kenneth Hochstedler of Wellman; Rowen Hochstedler and wife Susan of Newburyport, Massachusetts and former wife Carol Hochstedler of Kalona; 12 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and 3 brothers - Roy Kempf, Jacob Kempf, and Jay Kempf.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Mennonite Centeral Committee and Kalona Christian Fellowship Church

McCartney, David B.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held for David Barr McCartney, 87, on Saturday, May 18, 2002, at 11:00 AM at the Community Church on F52 Trail, west of Millersburg. Pastor Jack Olsen is officiating. Burial will be in the adjacent cemetery . Visitation Friday, May 17th from 5 - 8 PM at Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. David died on Tuesday, May 14, 2002 in the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City form complications of burns suffered in a brush fire on his farm, Iowa County. David was born on July 14, 1914 in Washington, Iowa, a son of William and Elizabeth Barr McCartney. He received his elementary education in rural schools and graduated from Washington High School in 1933. He was a life long farmer. He married Adelaide Kadlec in Iowa City in August 1941. They became the parents of two sons. Adelaide died in 1950. After marrying Doris Larson on June 3, 1951 in Albia, Iowa. They later moved with their blended family from Ainsworth, Iowa to a farm near Millersburg. David supported soil and water conservation and served as a commissioner on the County Conservation Board for 26 years. He was also active with the Iowa County Farm Bureau, the Cattlemen and Pork Producers, and with the Community Church, where he was a trustee during a major building program. Surviving are his wife, Doris of rural North English; two sons, Joe McCartney of Flowery Branch, GA and Eric Larson of Stuart, FL; a daughter, Elaine Clarke of Waterloo, IA; four grandchildren, Kerry McCartney of Minneapolis, MN, Kristin Simmons of Dysart, IA, Kent McCartney of Iowa City, and Garrett Larson of Custer, SD; and a sister Elizabeth (Betty) Mangold of Keota, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Adelaide and a son John W. McCartney in 1992. A memorial fund is established for youth camp scholarships.

Pelzer, Glee

Glee Elizabeth Pelzer, age 88, of Richmond, died Friday, May 10, 2002 at Pleasantview Home in Kalona following a brief illness. Glee was born May 14, 1913 near Richmond to Mike and Anna (Wieland) Stumpf and attended Holy Trinity Catholic School in Richmond. She worked in the dietary department at the University of Iowa Hospitals for several years and cared for her parents when their health was failing. In June of 1971 Glee married John Pelzer at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond. She was a lifelong resident of the Richmond community and was a member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and the Catholic Order of Foresters. Survivors include several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father: Mike Stumpf, mother: Anna Jordon, husband: John Pelzer and sister: Ruth Blakley. Mass of the Resurrection is set for 10:30 a.m. Monday, May 13, 2002 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Richmond with Rev. Rich Adam officiating. Interment is in the Holy Trinity cemetery . Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Sunday, May 12, 2002 at the Yoder - Powell Funeral Home in Kalona, where there will be a rosary service at 4:00 p.m. Sunday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Holy Trinity Catholic Church or Holy Trinity Catholic cemetery .

Marland J. Shetler was born July 21, 1930 near Kalona, Iowa the son of John and Mary (Yoder) Shetler. He attended Horseshoe Bend rural school. On June 7, 1953 he was united in marriage to Lora Doolin at the East Union Mennonite Church. He has lived in the Wellman and Kalona communities all of his life where he worked in the farming industry for many years and in 1976 he and Lora bought the Kalonial Townhouse Restaurant and have operated it together for the last 26 years. He was a charter member of the Kalona Mennonite Church. He was a member of the Kalona Optimist Club, Lions Club, Two Cylinder Club, and the Kalona Koffee Klub. He enjoyed collecting John Deere farm toys which were on display at the Kalonial Townhouse. Marland died on Tuesday, May 21, 2002 at his home in Kalona following a courageous battle with interstitial fibrosis at the age of 71 years. Marland is survived by his wife Lora of Kalona; 3 daughters - Cynthia “Cindy” Litwiller and husband Merlin of Fort Dodge; Carla Slaubaugh and husband Doug of Parnell; Carol Gingerich and husband Maynard of Riverside; a son - Jim Shetler and wife Jessica of Kalona; 13 grandchildren; a great grandson; a brother - Francis Shetler of Colorado Springs, Colorado; a niece Diane Johnson of Lehigh, Kansas; and 7 step brothers and sisters - Phyllis Gingerich of Kalona; Gene Eash of Wellman; Kate Klopfenstin of Tuscon, Arizona; David Rhodes of Hesston, Kansas; Ross Rhodes of Marshfield, Wisconsin; Warren Rhodes of Winfield, Illinois; and Janette Mellinger of Decatur, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Kalona Mennonite Church Bible School Program.

Smothers, Jeanne

KEOTA - Jeanne Smothers, age 70, of Keota, died Monday, April 29, 2002 at Maplewood Manor in Keota surrounded by her family to join her beloved daughter Becky in heaven. Jeanne was born December 14, 1931 in Washington County to Stanleigh and Mary (Gregory) Henderson. She grew up in Keota and graduated from Parsons College in Fairfield. On May 5, 1951 she married Richard “Swede” Smothers at the United Methodist Church in Keota. The couple made their home in Keota where Jeanne taught for many years at Mid Prairie Schools in Wellman. For the past several years she was a substitute teacher at the Sigourney and Keota Schools. Jeanne was a member of the United Church of Faith, the Women United and the Royal Neighbors of America. She was an avid gardener, Hawkeye fan, and enjoyed attending grandchildren’s sporting events and school activities and spending time with family. Survivors include her husband: Swede Smothers of Keota; children : Brad Smothers and wife Marilyn of Riverside, Greg Smothers and wife Holly of Jefferson City, Missouri, Jeff Smothers of Washington, Joni Redlinger and husband Denny of Keota, Jerry Smothers and wife Liz of Solon, Lori Smothers and friend Karol Brenneman of Wellman, Deb Smothers and friend Jil Bailey of Phoenix, Arizona, Bonnie Black and husband Brad of Sigourney, Mary Ollinger and husband John of Keota and Bill Smothers and wife Terri of Sigourney; 22 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren and brother: Jim Henderson and wife Ginny of Keota. She was preceded in death by her parents and daughter Rebecca Lynn. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 2, 2002 at the United Church of Faith in Keota with Rev. Melinda Chambers officiating. Interment will be at the Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, May 1, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. Memorials may be directed to Maplewood Manor in Keota.
