Burck, Ralph

Millersburg - Ralph Carl Burck was born February 23, 1916 in Millersburg, Iowa, the son Louis and Margaret Behrens Burck. He graduated from Millersburg High School in 1933. Ralph married Bertha Tish January 31, 1938 in Montezuma, Iowa. They lived on a farm near Millersburg and owned a salvage business. In 1951 they moved into Millersburg and in 1956 started Burck Tire which he owned and operated until retiring in 1976. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Millersburg. Ralph enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping and playing cards. Ralph died Monday, July 8, 2002 at his home in Millersburg after a sudden illness at the age of86 years. He is survived by his wife Bertha; a son Larry Burck and wife Maxine of Millers burg; a daughter Janice Taylor and husband Robert of Des Moines; five grandchildren: Debby Schmidt of Deep River, David Burck of Deep River, Dan and wife Kris Burck of Millers burg, Andrew Taylor of Portland, Oregon and Amber Branschweig of Madrid, Iowa; eleven great grandchildren: Chad and Brandon Schmidt of Deep River, Qumn and Gage Burck of Deep River, Miranda and Spencer Burck of Millersburg, Cody, Colton, I)evin and Saryle Branschweig of Madrid, Abigail Taylor of Portland OR. and two step great grandchildren Lacy and Ryan Branschweig of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Louella Friend. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 11, 2002 at 1 :30 P.M. in the Trinity Lutheran Church in Millersburg. Officiating will be Pastor Cory Rajek. Burial will be in the Millersburg cemetery . Visitation will be Wednesday from 2 P.M. to 8P .M. at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English where the family will be present from 6 to 8 P.M.. Memorials are for Millersburg First Responders or Trinity Lutheran Church.

Graham, Amy

DELTA - Amy Rachel Graham, age 16, of Delta, died Wednesday, June 19, 2002 from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Amy was born June 18, 1986 in Sigourney to Pat Graham and Laura Farmer. She attended Sigourney High School and had just finished her freshman year. Amy enjoyed art class and hanging with her friends. Survivors include her father Pat Graham of Delta; her mother and step - father, Laura and Rick Johnson of Sigourney; grandparents: Kenneth and Jeanette Farmer and Sunshine Graham, all of Delta; 3 half - sisters: Catherine Farmer of Pella, Christine Farmer of Ollie and Abigail Johnson of Sigourney; a half - brother, John Farmer of Oskaloosa; step - sister, Bridget Johnson of Perry and maternal great - grandmothers, Helen Farmer of Wyoming, Illinois and Louise Young of Delta. She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather, Capt. Graham; an aunt Paula Hunter; an uncle Robert Graham and a half - brother Jamie Graham. Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 22 at 2:30 p.m. at the Sigourney High School Gymnasium, Vince Homan officiating. Burial will be in Garrett cemetery near Delta. Visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with the family present from 6 - 8 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established.

Norman Jay Kauffman was born May 31, 1983 in Richland Center, Wisconsin, the son of James and Angie Hostetler Kauffman. He moved with his family to Kalona in August 1993. He worked at Hardy Lawn Furniture Sales. Norman enjoyed working on small engines and playing the piano and organ. He accepted Christ and was baptized in his youth and attended Zion Christian Fellowship Church in Wellman. Norman died on Sunday, July 7, 2002 in a swimming accident at Palisades Kepler State Park near Mt. Vernon at the age of 19 years, 1 month and 7 days. Norman is survived by his parents, James and Angie Kauffman of Kalona; three sisters: Vernelle, Renita and Kristin Kauffman all of Kalona; 2 brothers: Jared Kauffman of White Sulfur Springs, Montana and Sanford Kauffman of Kalona; paternal grandfather and step grandmother James and Naomi Kauffman of Marion Montana; maternal grandparents Robert and Virginia Hostetler of Richland Center, Wisconsin; thirteen uncles and aunts and a great uncle Curtis Kauffman of Muscoda, Wisconsin. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandmother Lanora Mae Kauffman an uncle Daryl Hostetler and a great aunt Verna Kauffman.
A General Memorial Fund has been established.

Kensler, Ethel
October 04, 1912 - June 17, 2002
Sigourney, Iowa
DELTA - Ethel Kensler, age 89 of Delta, died Monday, June 17, 2002 at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney following a lengthy illness. Ethel was born on October 4, 1912 in Delta, Iowa to Frank R. and Susie (Caywood) Spears. She grew up in Delta and received her education in country school. On July 12, 1930 she married Theodore Kensler at the Wapello County Courthouse. Following marriage the couple lived and farmed near Delta until moving into Delta in 1985. Ethel was a member of the Delta United Methodist Church and enjoyed the outdoors, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include her son: Kenneth Kensler and wife Maxine of Delta; two granddaughters: Stephanie and Stacey; four great grandchildren: Cody, Summer, Austin and Zachary and one brother: Harold Spears of Sycamore, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Theodore in 1999 and sister: Mildred Albertson. Funeral services are set for 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 19, 2002 at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Vince Homan officiating. Interment will be at Garrett cemetery near Delta. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 18, 2002 at the funeral home, where the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established.

WAPELLO - Kolten Matthew Kingsbury was stillborn Sunday, July 28, 2002 at University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, the son of Matt and Heather (Greiner) Kingsbury. Survivors include his parents of Wapello; paternal grandparents:Gary and Juanita Kingsbury of Keosauqua; maternal grandparents: Marlie and Bonnie Greiner of Keota; paternal great grandparents: Darrell and Jessie Morris of Keosauqua; maternal great grandparents: Leonard Greiner of Keota and Alva and Isabelle Baker of Keota; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He was preceded in death by his great grandparents: Clarence and Bessie Kingsbury, Marie Morris and Mary and Hazel Greiner. Private family services will be held on Friday, August 2, 2002 at Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Interment will be a St. Mary Catholic cemetery in Keota. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the family.

William "Bill" F. Leigh was born November 29, 1931 in Centerville, Iowa the son of Fred and Frances (Fisk) Leigh. He graduated from Centerville High School. He served in the Army during the Korean War. On January 12, 1955 he was united in marriage to Evelyn Canott in Davenport. They lived in Davenport for 35 years where he worked as a Maintenance Oiler for Alcoa in Davenport. They have lived in the Wellman community since July of 1985. Bill was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church; Charles Polton American Legion Post #427; Steelworkers Union; and the Alcoa Union and retirement club. Bill died on Thursday, July 4, 2002 following a long illness at the age of 70 years. Bill is survived by his wife Evelyn of Wellman; 4 children - David Leigh and wife Merri of Long Grove; Daniel Leigh and wife Gretchen of Davenport; Mary Beth Lilja and husband Ernie of Pecatonica, Illinois; Donald Leigh and wife Carol of Iowa City; 8 grandchildren; 5 step grandchildren; a great granddaughter; his mother Frances Leigh of Washington; and 4 brothers - James Leigh of Davenport; Robert Leigh of Florida; Tom Leigh of Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Ted Leigh of Des Moines. He was preceded in death by his father and a brother - Jackie Leigh.
In Memory of Bill Leigh a Memorial Fund has been established for the Asbury United Methodist Church and for Alzheimer's Research.

Lindhart, Otis N.
December 24, 1925 - July 15, 2002
Otis Neil Lindhart was born December 24, 1925 in Humboldt County, Iowa the son of Nels and Maurine Goodell Lindhart. He grew up in the Humboldt and Webster Counties. He graduated from Burnside high school at Burnside, Iowa and received his BA in Agronomy from the Iowa State University. Otis served his county in WWII as a Seaman 1st Class in the U.S. Navy. Otis was united in marriage to Ruth Boland on March 24, 1951 in Williamsburg. He has lived in the Williamsburg area since 1951. He was a life long farmer. Otis was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He spent his life serving and helping others. He was very active in the community, he was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Elder and a Deacon. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge where he was past master, Order of the Eastern Star where he was Past Worthy Patron, Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797, Kiwanis Club where he was past president & treasurer, he served on the Iowa County Extension Council, Iowa County Pork Producers where he was past president and the Iowa County Cattleman’s Association. Otis died Monday, July 15, 2002 at his home after a 10 month battle with cancer at the age of 76 years. Otis is survived by his wife Ruth of 51 years; three daughters: Dianne Burke and husband Pat of Fairbank, Iowa, Karen Miller and husband John of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Janice Schlesselman and husband Tom of Freeport, Illinois; a son Donald Lindhart and wife Mary Sue of Williamsburg; Eleven grandchildren: Logan & Nolan Burke, Michael, Matthew and Laura Miller, Ben, Amy and Micah Schlesselmann and Rachel, Michelle and Jenna Lindhart; three sisters: Ruth Schwendemann of Lehigh, Iowa, Maralyn Ball of Webb, Iowa and Lila Weber of West Bend, Iowa and a brother Charles Lindhart of DeKalb, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister Neoma Sweet. Funeral services are set for 10:00 am on Thursday, July 18, 2002 at the First Presbuterian Church in Williamsburg with Rev. James Stewart officiation. Burial is in the Oakhill cemetery in Williamsburg with military honors. Family and friends may call at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg on Wednesday from 3:00 - 8:00 pm. A memorial fund has been established for the First Presbyterian Church, Hospice of Compassion and the American Cancer Society.

Morris, Thomas Arthur

Keota, Iowa
KEOTA - Thomas Arthur Morris, age 89, of Tucson, Arizona, formerly of Keota, died Monday, July 8, 2002 at the Veteran’s Hospital in Tucson, Arizona. Tommy was born in Keota on June 22, 1913 to Thomas Achillies and Pearl Agusta (Devilbiss) Morris. He grew up in Keota and graduated from Keota High School in 1930. In 1944 he was drafted into the Army and served his tour of duty in the Corps of Engineers during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1945. Tom returned home to Keota where he was a bulk truck driver for W.H. Ross. In 1957 he moved to Cedar Rapids and then to Davenport where he worked for Continental Baking. He retired from the Davenport School District in 1978. Tommy was a member of the Masonic Lodge #26 in Washington, where he was Worshipful Master in 1956, the VFW and the American Legion. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, reading and sports. Survivors include two sons: William Morris of Mira Loma, California and James and wife Elaine Morris of Fontana, California; daughter: Sue Hood of Tucson, Arizona; 7 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; one sister: Marion Orindorff of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa and a special friend: Jeanette Nelson of Davenport, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents; son Jack Morris; sisters: Dorothy Wickham and Harriet Morris and brothers: John and C.S. Morris. Graveside and Masonic services will be held Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at Keota cemetery in Keota with Rev. Danny Lemons officiating. Military rites will be by the Keota V.F. W. Post #4716. The Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements. Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association.

Doris Phillips, age 86, of Keota, died Thursday, June 20, 2002 at Maplewood Manor in Keota. Doris was born August 4, 1915 in North English to Samuel and Almeda (Gregory) Eakins. She grew up in the North English area and graduated from Kinross High School. On January 25, 1933 she married Gerald Edward Wade. Following marriage the couple lived and farmed in the North English and Kinross areas. Gerald died in 1962. In 1970 Doris married Phil George. They made their home in Keota. Phil died in 1982. On February 14, 1987 she married Carl Phillips and they lived in rural Washington. Doris returned to Keota following Carl’s death in 2000. Doris was the Activities Director at Maplewood Manor for several years and was a member of the Kinross Christian Church, the Rebekah Lodge and the I.O.O.F., serving as Past Noble Grand. She enjoyed music, reading and the wonderful care she received while at Maplewood Manor. Survivors include one son: Duane Wade and wife Julie of Golden Valley, Minnesota; daughter - in - law: Deanna Wade of Williamsburg; three grandchildren: Jill Wade, Johnette Kruse and Jeff Wade and two great grandchildren: Dakota and Chyanne Kruse. She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands: Gerald, Phil and Carl; son: John Edward Wade in 1999; brothers: Bud and Bill Eakins and sisters: Maude Long and Cora Mattison.
A Memorial Fund has been established for Maplewood Manor.

RUBY, HAZEL E.
October 14, 1903 - July 27, 2002
NORTH ENGLISH, IA
Hazel Esther Ruby was born on October 14, 1903 near North English, Iowa, a daughter of John William and Charlotte Jane Williams Harris. She was raised in the country east of North English where she attended school. On June 6, 1923 she was united in marriage to Henry Everet Denison in Marengo, Iowa. They farmed most of their life in the North English area, except for a few years in Missouri. He preceded her in death on May 5, 1968. Hazel was a member of the North English Christian Church. She loved quilting and spent a lot of time at the community center quilting with the ladies. On May 16, 1978, Hazel married Ralph Ruby in Marengo. Ralph was a barber in Sigourney for many years. They made their home in North English. Ralph preceded her in death on October 9, 1990. Hazel became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in July 2000. She died there following a extended illness on Saturday, July 27, 2002. She lived 98 years, 9 months and 13 days. Hazel is survived by two daughters: Opal Popham of North English, IA and LaDonna Vitt of Paris, MO; a sister, Bernice McNabb of Cedar Rapids 8 grandchildren: Linda Vikel of Iowa City, Donald Popham of North English, Ronald Popham of Riverside, Brent Popham of Kalona, Charles Vitt, Donnetta Wheeler and Joseph Vitt all of Paris, MO, and Debbie Jones of Centralia, MO; 17 great grandchildren, and 18 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a sister Opal Lucille Coxe, and brothers William Albert and Verle Vernon Harris. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 29, 2002 at 11:00 AM at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Pastor Don Ridenour officiating. Burial will be in the North English cemetery . Visitation will be held at the Powell Funeral Home in North English from 5 PM to 8 PM on Sunday. A memorial fund has been established.

Merwyn L. Schlabach was born September 28, 1985 in Washington, Iowa the son of Henry and Fannie Ellen Miller Schlabach. He has lived in the Kalona area all of his life. He helped on the family farm and was interested in computers, programming and web designing. Merwyn accepted Christ and was baptized 5 weeks ago. He was a member of the Zion Christian Fellowship Church in Wellman. He died on Sunday, July 7, 2002 in a swimming accident at Palisades Kepler State Park near Mt. Vernon at the age of 16 years, 9 months and 9 days. Merwyn is survived by his parents Henry and Fannie Ellen Schlabach of Kalona; three sisters: Janene, Sherlyn and Kayla Schlabach all of Kalona and two brothers: Jared and Jeremy Schlabach of Kalona. Also surviving are his paternal grandmother Viola Schlabach and maternal grandfather Daniel Miller, both of Kalona as well as five uncles and 5 aunts. He was preceded in death by a sister Jewel, paternal grandfather Jacob Schlabach, maternal grandmother Esther Miller and one uncle.
A General Memorial Fund has been established.
