SIGOURNEY - Quinn Richard Svenby was stillborn Saturday, June 15, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, the son of Eric and Shannon (Morse) Svenby. Survivors include his parents: Eric and Shannon Svenby of Sigourney; brother: Collin Svenby of Sigourney; maternal grandparents: Richard and Merla Morse of Sigourney; paternal grandparents: Roy and Pam Svenby of Keosauqua; maternal great grandparents: Ellis and Evelyn Morse of Montezuma; paternal great grandmother: Helen Schwidder of Davenport and maternal great - great grandmother: Hazel Strausser of North English. He was preceded in death by his great grandparents: Dale and Dorothy Stanley and Roy and Elizabeth Chandler. Private graveside services will be held at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sigourney with Rev. Danny Lemons officiating. There will be no visitation. A general memorial fund has been established.

Utterback, Velna

SIGOURNEY - Velna L. Utterback, age 101, of Sigourney, died Monday, July 8, 2002 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. Velna was born April 28, 1901 near Hayesville to Eugene and Laura (Richardson) Robertson. Her mother, Laura, died on May 1, 1901 leaving three day old Velna to be raised by her maternal grandparents: Isaac and Susan Richardson. She attended Chastine Country School and then 9th grade at Hayesville. Later she received her teaching certificate in Cedar Falls. Velna taught one year at Chastine Country School then four years in Hayesville. On December 25, 1924 she married Leo B. Adams in Sigourney. They became parents of two sons Beryl and Paul. Leo died on November 4, 1968. Velna continued to live on the family farm west of Hayesville for over three years until moving to Sigourney. On July 11, 1981 she married Verle C. Utterback at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Verle died on October 24, 1983. Velna was a member of the Spiritualist Church in Hayesville. She was active in the Keokuk County Farm Bureau, where she was a member of the choir and kitchen band and served as Women’s Publicity Chairman for many years. Velna was also Cancer County Memorial Chairmen for fifteen years and a member of Keokuk County Historical Society. She enjoyed gardening, quilting, historical work and cooking. Survivors include her son Beryl and wife Betty Adams of Sigourney; three great grandchildren: Erika and husband Garrett Fronabarger of St. Louis, Missouri, Tracy Adams and Steven Adams of Jackson, Missouri; four step daughters: Lois and husband Norman Collins of Sigourney, Alma Tallman of Atlantic, Iowa, Rose and husband Robert Torgerson of Tucson, Arizona and Avis Keen of Phoenix, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands; Leo Adams and Verle Utterback; her son Paul Adams and grandson Phil Adams. Memorial services will be held Saturday, July 13, 2002 at 11:00 a.m. at Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Father David Wilkening officiating. Burial will be in Pennington cemetery . Memorials may be directed to the Keokuk County Historical Society.

Lester Daniel Yoder was born October 27, 1915 in Iowa County near Wellman, Iowa the son of Harvey and Barbara (Miller) Yoder. He attended the Franklin Rural School. He was baptized in 1929 and has been a lifelong member of the West Union Mennonite Church. On February 20, 1938 he married Carrie M. Slaubaugh at the West Union Mennonite Church in rural Parnell. He farmed in rural Wellman from 1936 - 1979. In 1964 he started to do wood working and made furniture. In November of 1983 his wife Carrie died. He later married Carolyn Slaubaugh on August 17, 1984 in Iowa County. He especially enjoyed his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Lester died on Tuesday, July 30, 2002 at his home in rural Wellman following a lingering illness at the age of 86 years. Lester is survived by 5 sons - Carroll and wife Nancy of Harrisonburg, Virginia; Marcus and wife Pearl; Wilbur and wife Helen; Milford and wife Edna; Galen and wife Gloria all of Wellman; 16 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Carrie in November of 1983; second wife Carolyn in July of 1998; a brother Roy L. Yoder in 1978; and an infant grandson Zachary
A Memorial Fund has been established for the West Union Mennonite Church.

Marie Doris Huber was born December 3, 1925 near South English, Iowa the daughter of Earl and Ethel (Bouslog) Herr. She graduated from Keota High School in 1943 and attended Coe College. On March 3, 1946 she was united in marriage to Herbert Huber in South English, Iowa. They lived in the Keota and Wellman communities where she worked as a teller at the Wellman Savings Bank for 20 years before retiring in 1988. She was a member of the United Church of Faith in Keota where she was active in the women's group. She was a former 4 - H leader, she served on the Washington County 4 - H Council Committee, and was a member of PEO and Wellman Ladies Embroidery Club. Marie died unexpectedly on Monday, October 7, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 76 years. Marie is survived by her husband Herbert of Wellman; 2 daughters - Linda Birney and husband David of Washington; Margaret Brinning and husband Lanny of Keota; a son - Jay Huber and wife Patricia of Wellman; 2 grandchildren - Christine Birney and Kyle Huber; 3 step grandchildren - Michelle Clarahan and husband Ryan, Allen Miller and Matthew Miller; and a step great granddaughter - Heidi Clarahan; 4 sisters - Helen Mayer of Crestview, Florida, Beatrice Huber of Cedar Rapids; Cleo Wilhelm of Los Osos, California; and Joyce Erdahl and husband Al of Monticello. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, a step great granddaughter - Mallory Clarahan; and a brother - Ralph Herr.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Untied Church of Faith, Wellman Ambulance and Wellman Scofield Public Library.

Lewis E. Swantz was born August 29, 1930 near Kalona, Iowa the son of Emmet and Anna (Helmuth) Swantz. He attended West Lincoln rural school. On January 17, 1952 he was united in marriage to Mary Gingerich. They lived in the Kalona community where he farmed until moving to Mobile, Alabama in 1985 where he worked in maintenance and as a groundskeeper until retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church and he attended the Mobile Mennonite Church. Lewis died on Sunday, October 6, 2002 at his home in Mobile, Alabama following a brief illness at the age of 72 years. Lewis is survived by his wife Mary of Mobile, Alabama; a son Norman Swantz and wife Sandy of Kalona; 4 daughters - Nelda Summers and husband Chris of Atmore, Alabama; Gloria Hochstedler and husband Darwin; Junell Swantz; Lorna Yoder and husband Clair all of Kalona; 8 grandchildren; 2 brothers - Wilson Swantz and Chuck Swantz of Kalona; and 2 sisters - Amelia Yoder and Barbara Miller of Kalona. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Jonas Swantz; and a sister Fannie Yoder.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church and the Mobile Mennonite Church.

Besser, Daisy

SIGOURNEY - Daisy Earline Rogers Besser, age 87 of Sigourney died Thursday, October 3, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a brief illness. Daisy was born October 21, 1914 in Hayesville, Iowa to Earl and Lily (Forney) Rogers and graduated from Sigourney High School in 1931. On November 11, 1936 she married Francis “Cy” Besser at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper, Iowa. A lifelong resident of Keokuk County, Daisy worked in the Keokuk County Treasurer’s and Recorder’s offices, serving as Deputy Recorder. She was also employed at the Keokuk County Abstract Office in Sigourney and Farmer’s Cooperative Association in Keota. Daisy was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney and was active in many areas throughout the years at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. She enjoyed cooking, playing Skip - Bo, traveling and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include five daughters: Connie and husband Glen Hanson of Iowa City, Rosalie and husband Darrell Holbrook of Macedonia, Ohio, Francene and husband Steve Cranston of Deep River, Sally Ann and husband Duane Jamison of Ankeny, Vicki and husband Steve Besco of Eddyville; one son: Frank M. and wife Francine Besser of Emmetsburg; 16 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Francis “Cy” in 2000; one brother: Rex Rogers and one sister: Doris Schumacher. Mass of the Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, October 7, 2002 at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper with Revs. Philip Ryan, Marty Goetz, Robert Striegel and Robert Harness officiating. Burial will be at St. Elizabeth cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, October 6, 2002 at Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, with a rosary service at 5:00 p.m. Visitation will continue from 9:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Monday at the church. A general memorial fund has been established.

Stoutner, Ruth. E. "Betty"

KEOTA - Ruth Elizabeth “Betty” Stoutner, age 84, of Keota, died Sunday, September 29, 2002 at Maplewood Manor in Keota following a brief illness. Betty was born April 1, 1918 in Keota to Charles A. and Sarah I. (McFarlane) Singmaster. She graduated from Keota High School in 1935 and married Clyde Stoutner, Jr. on September 7, 1936 in Missouri. A lifelong resident of the Keota community, Betty was a member of the United Church of Faith in Keota, Lagos Acres Country Club and a charter member of the T.T.T. Society. She was a Mary Kay consultant for many years and enjoyed playing bridge, golfing and her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters: Nancy Seitsinger and husband Ron of Sumner and Susan Vos and husband Larry of Wichita, Kansas; four grandchildren: Daniel Seitsinger and wife Pat of Roland, David Seitsinger and wife Denise of Sumner, Lori Seitsinger of Aurora, Colorado and Chris Vos and wife Denise of Wichita, Kansas and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Clyde ; three brothers: Charles Daniel, Samuel and Robert and two sisters: Mary Helen Peden and Margaret Mayer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, October 3, 2002 at the United Church of Faith in Keota with Rev. Melinda Chambers officiating. Burial will be at Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Washington County or the United Church of Faith.

Beinke, Bessie

SIGOURNEY - Bessie Irene Beinke, age 96, of Sigourney, died Tuesday, September 24, 2002 at the Sigourney Care Center following a brief illness. Bessie was born February 28, 1906 near Williamsburg, Iowa to Charles and Elizabeth (Brawner) Romberg and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1925. On October 12, 1937 she married Paul Beinke at her parents’ home. The couple lived on a farm near Webster until 1966, when they moved into Sigourney. Bessie became a resident of Sigourney Care Center on November 18, 1997. She was a member of the Webster United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women in Webster and Sigourney. Bessie loved to cook and her family will always remember her noodles and rolls. She also loved children and her nephews and nieces will always remember her kind deeds and many gifts. Survivors include one brother: Delbert Romberg and wife Helen of Ocala, Florida; one sister: Phyllis Jellings and husband Donald of Oelwein, Iowa; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Paul on February 3, 1967; two sisters: Rosalie Luers and Opal Luers and one brother: Milo at age 15 months. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 27, 2002 at the Sigourney United Methodist Church with Rev. Danny Lemons and Rev. Jim Stout officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 26, 2002 at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where the family will be present from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Webster or Sigourney United Methodist Church or the Keokuk County Historical Society.

SUTER, RALPH
November 13, 1908 - September 22, 2002
SOUTH ENGLISH, IA
Ralph E. Suter was born on November 13, 1908, near South English , IA, a son of Aldine and Bertha Grove Suter. He graduated from Kinross High School in 1926 and attended Mt. Morris College in Mt. Morris, IL. After Ralph returned to the South English area to begin farming,. He married Margaret Oster on December 25, 1938 in Webster, IA. She preceded him in death in 1944. On September 24, 1949, Ralph married Evelyn I. Miller, at the parsonage of the Panther Creek Church of the Brethren near Adel, IA. They made their home and farmed in the South English community. Ralph was a long time active member of the English River Church of the Brethren. In 1989 they left the farm and moved into South English. Ralph became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in April 1995. Evelyn preceded him in death in December 1998. Ralph died following a brief illness on Sunday, September 22, 2002 at the English Valley Care Center. He lived 93 years, 10 months and 9 days. Ralph is survived by a sister Corinne Suter of Iowa City, a nephew David Suter of Evanston, IL; and two nieces: Liz Hoskins of Cedar Rapids and Cindy Newell of Muscatine. Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, wives Margaret and Evelyn and a brother John Suter. Services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, September 25, 2002, at the English River Church of the Brethren near South English. Rev. Marilyn Coffman will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery . Visitation will be held from 5:30 PM to 8 PM Tuesday at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English.

Moser, Wanda
September 26, 1916 - September 16, 2002
Williamsburg, Iowa
Wanda Cathrine Moser, the daughter of George and Rosa Conrad Heitman, was born on September 26, 1916, on a farm in Summer Township, Iowa County, rural Marengo, Iowa. She attended rural Iowa County schools. She was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity United Church of Christ, rural Marengo. On September 30, 1936, Wanda was married to Elmer B. Moser in an evening candlelight ceremony at the Rosedale Family farm by Reverend Louis A. Moser; Elmer’s father and minister at the Trinity United Church of Christ form 1930 to 1937. To this union, two children, Robert and Karen, were born. Wanda and Elmer farmed on the Rosedale farm until March of 1944 when they moved to a farm in Pilot Township. Wanda and Elmer farmed for many years in Iowa county and moved to Williamsburg in 1972 to the home Elmer built at 908 Elms Street. She lived in this home and cared the beautiful yard, garden and flowers. Wanda worked for the Amana Refrigeration plant for twenty - three years and retired in 1978. She was extremely active in the Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg. She also volunteered for the Red Cross blood drives and was active in the R.S.V.P. group. After suffering a massive CVA in 1999 Wanda became a resident of Little Flower Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Earling, Iowa. It was there that she died on Monday, September 16, 2002, having attained the age of eighty - five years, eleven months and twenty days. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Moser; son, Robert Moser; sister, Glova Sheda, and brother, Wilbur Heitman. She is survived by one daughter, Karen and her husband, Kenneth Sojka of Harlan, Iowa; one brother Milton Heitman of Marengo, Iowa; grandchildren, Robert Moser and his wife, Laura of Plantation, Florida, Scott Sojka of Downers Grove, Illinois, Julie and her husband, Richard Brown of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Suzanne and her husband, Kirk Fjelstul of Decatur, Georgia, Jackie and her husband, Dennis Knott of Bartlett, Illinois, and Jim and his wife, Diana of Texas; five great grandchildren; nieces and nephews; other relatives and many friends. Funeral Services will be 1:30 P.M., Friday, September 20, 2002, at the First Presbyterian Church in Williamsburg, Iowa with Pastor James Stewart officiating. Interment is in the Genoa Bluffs cemetery near Ladora, Iowa. Visitation is from 4:00 - 7:00pm Thursday at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg.

Byrne, Kathleen R.

KEOTA - Kathleen R. Byrne, age 96, of Keota, died suddenly Sunday, September 15, 2002 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington. Kathleen was born October 2, 1905 in Platteville, Wisconsin to Richard and Fern (Rewey) Reddy. She graduated from Platteville High School and Platteville Teachers’ College. Kathleen taught high school English in Wisconsin schools. On June 24, 1929 she married Basil J. Byrne at St. Mary’s Church in Platteville. The couple lived in Iowa City for three years before moving to Keota in 1932 when Basil established his law practice. Following marriage, Kathleen was a homemaker and substitute teacher. Kathleen was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Keota, its Altar and Rosary Society and Reading Circle. She was also a member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary, Women’s Relief Corps, Fortnightly Club and 500 Club and was active in both the St. Mary’s and Keota High School P.T.A. and the Keota Senior Center. Kathleen especially enjoyed her family and friends, playing cards, reading and was an avid sports fan. Survivors include six children: Patricia Hughes of Redwood City, California, Paul Byrne and wife Darlene of Davenport, Margaret (Peg) Riordan of Keota, Helen Kimball and husband Curtis of Prairie Village, Kansas, Mary Wolfe and husband Charles of Iowa City and Basil Byrne, Jr. and wife Diana of Raleigh, North Carolina; 26 grandchildren; 25 great grandchildren; one great great granddaughter; six step grandchildren and six step great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Basil in 1973; one daughter: Rosemary Laux in 1992; one grandson: Gregory Joseph Laux in infancy and one sister: Frankie Johnson. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 19, 2002 at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be an Altar and Rosary Society Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the Wilson Memorial Library or the Keota Senior Center.
