Jay R. Miller M.D. was born October 12, 1916 in Wellman, Iowa the son of Dr. Enos D. and Millie (Rogers) Miller. He graduated from Wellman High School; the University of Iowa and Creighton University Medical School. On September 9, 1941 he was united in marriage to LaVera Greiner in Keota, Iowa. He served as a Captain in the 83rd Infantry Division as a Battalion Surgeon in the Army during WWII and received the Purple Heart. Dr. Jay was a Physician in Wellman for 50 years working with his father Dr. Enos Miller and later his son Dr. Dennis Miller. He was a staff Physician for Mercy Hospital in Iowa City for many years and he served on the Mercy Hospital Board of Directors. He served on the Wellman City Council, was Mayor of Wellman, served on the Board of Education for the Wellman High School, and was the developer of the Maplewood Addition in Wellman. He was a member of the St. Joseph's Catholic Church; American Medical Association; Iowa State Medical Society; American Academy of Family Practice; Charles Polton American Legion Post # 427 and the Wellman Rotary Club. Dr. Jay died on Sunday, September 15, 2002 at his home in Wellman following a brief illness at the age of 85 years. Dr. Jay is survived by his wife LaVera of Wellman; 5 children - Jay R. Miller Jr. and wife Jamie of Santa Barbara, California; Mary Ann Miller - Greiner of Wellman; Cheryl Ann Miller and husband William Powers of Birchwood, Minnesota; Karen Sue Simon and husband Peter of Evergreen, Colorado; Dr. Dennis G. Miller and wife Neva of Wellman; 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a sister - Joyce Nash of Santa Barbara, California. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers - Morris Miller and Roger Miller.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the St. Joseph's Catholic Church and Mercy Hospital.

Doehrmann, Gene

Williamsburg - - Gene Allan Doehrmann was born June 5, 1951 in Williamsburg, Iowa the son of Arnold and Lillie Glandorf Doehrmann. He was baptized June 24, 1951 and was confirmed April 11, 1965. Gene attended St. Paul Lutheran School and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1969. He graduated from Wartburg College at Waverly in 1973. After graduation, he taught school for two years at the Cromwell Children’s Unit in Independence, Iowa. Gene was united in marriage to Janice L. VanSteenhuyse on February 23, 1974 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Williamsburg. They returned to Williamsburg in 1975 and Gene worked at Burg Implement until 1984. In May of 1984 they opened Gene’s Express Mart in Williamsburg. Gene has also been active in farming the past 20 years. Gene’s interests include golf, hunting, fishing and being a great Hawkeye fan. He helped initiate, and served as president, the Williamsburg Summer Recreation Program and was involved in coaching baseball and basketball from T ball to junior high. He especially enjoyed coaching his three sons. Gene was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg where he served as an elder and on various other church committees. Williamsburg Fire Department for 18 years, a board member and past president of the Sport Hill Country Club, a member of the Williamsburg Lions Club and the Williamsburg Booster Club. Gene died Sunday, September 15, 2002 at his home of cancer at the age of 51 years. Family members include his wife Jan; three sons: Matthew and wife Mayra of West Des Moines - Ryan of Chicago, Illinois and Ross of Williamsburg; his mother Lillie Doehrmann of Williamsburg; three brothers: Allan Doehrmann and wife Marcella of Williamsburg - Don Doehrmann and wife JoAnne of Williamsburg and Gerald and wife Teri of Minier, Illinois and one sister LaVerne Brandt and husband Robert of Reedsville, Wisconsin. Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 18, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. in St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Rev. Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran cemetery . The family will greet friends from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M. Tuesday at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for the Lutheran Interparish School building fund, St. Paul Lutheran Church or Hospice of Compassion for Iowa County all in Williamsburg.

Joe H. Kauffman was born September 3, 1917 in Arthur, Illinois the son of Henry and Mary Ann (Stutzman) Kauffman. He grew up in Arthur and in Oklahoma where he was baptized in his youth and was a member of the Amish Church. He has lived in the Kalona Community since 1939. On December 7, 1939 he was united in marriage to Mattie Mast in Iowa City. He farmed, was a truck driver for the Kalona Creamery, and was a night watchman for Yoder Feeds. He was a member of the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church. Joe died on Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following a long illness at the age of 85 years. Joe is survived by 3 sisters - Martha Stutzman of Kalona; Katie Ann Miller and husband Lester of Kalona; Clara Gingerich and husband George of Iowa City; 2 brothers - Jacob Kauffman and wife Jean of Kalona; Harvey Kauffman and wife Fannie of Middlebury, Indiana; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Mattie; a sister - Esther Bontrager; a brother - Levi Kauffman; and several nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church and the Pleasantview Home.

Smith, John "Johnny Van"

HARPER - John V. “Johnny Van” Smith, age 64, of Harper, died Tuesday, September 3, 2002 near Oskaloosa from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. John was born June 12, 1938 in Harper, Iowa to Virgil and Helen (Rung) Smith. He graduated from St. Elizabeth School in Harper and St. Ambrose College in 1963. On February 11, 1961 John married Julia Behrens in Davenport. John worked for W.C. Gretter and Son since 1973. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and Keokuk County Democrats, serving on the Central Committee. John was also the Harper Park Commissioner, enjoyed gardening and was an avid card player. Survivors include his wife: Julia of Harper; five children: Laura Korth and husband Kenneth of Davenport, Steve Smith of Royal Oak, Michigan, Beth Thompson and husband Jim of Woodstock, Georgia, Brian Smith and wife Margaret of Yukon, Oklahoma and Susan Carr and husband Solomon of Owings Mills, Maryland; 11 grandchildren; three sisters: Audrey Gretter and husband William of Keota, Virgilla Wickwar and husband Richard of Fort Washington, Maryland and Charlene Smith, FSPA, of LaCrosse, Wisconsin and one brother: Niles Smith and wife Ginny of Minnetonka, Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister: Cindy. Memorial services are set for 10:00 a.m. Saturday, September 7, 2002 at Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Interment will be at St. Elizabeth’s cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, September 6, 2002 at the funeral home, where there will be a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established.

Gretter, Helen

KEOTA - Helen Romaine Gretter, age 87, of Keota, died Wednesday, August 21, 2002 at McCreedy Home in Washington following a lengthy illness. Helen was born August 7, 1915 in rural Keota to John Clyde and Pearl (Green) Stoutner. She graduated from Keota High School in 1934 and attended Drake University for one year. On October 17, 1945 she married Dudley Gretter in Iowa City. Helen was a lifetime resident of the Keota community and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Christian Church in Keota and enjoyed her grandsons’ activities. Survivors include one son: Thomas D. and wife Paulette Gretter of Keota; two grandsons: John D. and wife Sarah Gretter of Washington and Jim M. Gretter of Iowa City and two great grandchildren: Ellie and Chloe. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Dudley in 1989 and three brothers: Albert, Clyde, Jr. and Boyd. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 24, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be at Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, August 23, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where the family will be present from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Keota Community School Foundation for Scholarships.

Stahl, Idella
October 28, 1930 - August 10, 2002
Idella Fern Stahl was born October 28, 1930 in Cairo, Nebraska, the daughter of Chris and Anna Bellar Spenler. She attended school in Nebraska. Idella was united in marriage to Levi Kauffman July of 1952, together they had a daughter and he died in 1961. On June 7, 1970 she married Harold Stahl at the St. Paul United Methodist Church in Williamsburg. They lived in Williamsburg until 1975 when they moved to Cherokee Village, Arkansas. After Harold’s death in April of 1982 Idella moved to Arlington, Texas. Idella worked as a shift manager at the Taco Buenos in Arlington and was a member of the Tate Springs Baptist Church. She died Saturday evening August 10, 2002 at her daughters home in Arlington after a sudden illness at the age of 71 years. She is survived by her daughter Debbie Reid and husband Tom of Arlington, Texas; three grandchildren: Tessie, Tommy and Stephanie; two sisters: Dorothy Doehrmann and Helen Spenler both of Iowa City and a brothers Leonard Spenler of Iowa City. Idella was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Levi and Harold and three brothers: Norman, Vernon and Roy. Grave side services will be Thursday, August 15, 2002 at 1:00 P.M. in the Oak Hill cemetery in Williamsburg. Rev. Susan LeBlanc will officiate. Visitation will be from 11:00 am until service time at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and cremation Service in Williamsburg.

Utterback, Larry

SIGOURNEY - Larry L. Utterback, I., age 68, of Sigourney, died Friday, August 9, 2002 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. Larry was born July 22, 1934 in Delta to Otto and Freida (Strohman) Utterback. He graduated from Delta High School in 1953. Larry served in the Army. He married Clarissa Green on July 1, 1956 at the Sigourney Christian Parsonage. Larry retired from Natural Gas Pipeline of Harper, Iowa in 1996 as a main operator. He was a resident of the Delta - Sigourney area all of his life. Larry enjoyed golf, umpiring ball games and being with his family. Survivors include his wife, Clarissa of Sigourney; two sons: Larry L. Utterback, II and wife Kathy of Sigourney and Darin J. Utterback of Sacramento, California; two daughters: Terri A. Black and husband Doug of Oskaloosa, and Darcy L. Gill and husband Toby of Plainfield, Illinois; six grandchildren: Jeremy and Katie Black, Eryn and Andrew Utterback and Kelsey and Megan Gill; six brothers: Leland of Grinnell, Bruce of Colorado Springs, Colorado, his twin brother Loren of Sigourney, Jim of Wapello, K of Winterset and Richard of Texas and two sisters: Betty Steele and Ruth Stanley, both of Oskaloosa. Preceding Larry in death were his parents and two brothers, Hal and Jack. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 12, 2002 at 10:30 a.m. at Sigourney Christian Church, Rev. Paul Davidson officiating. Burial will be in Garrett cemetery near Delta. Visitation will be Sunday, August 11, 2002 from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney A General Memorial Fund has been established.

WILDA, STRAUSSER
May 15, 1918 - December 02, 2003
Wilda I. Strausser was born on May 15, 1918 in Falls City, NE, a daughter of Walter F. and Daisy Mae Moore Seeger. She grew up in Falls City and graduated from Falls City High School. Wilda worked at the Falls City Montgomery Wards store until being transferred to a store in Ames, IA. It was in Ames where she met Myrlin S. Strausser. They were married in Ames on Thanksgiving Day, November 27, 1941. Wilda lived 8 months back in Falls City while Myrlin served in Korea. They lived a short time in Waterloo before moving to North English in 1945. Wilda was an active member of the North English Christian Church and CWF, the VFW Auxiliary, and a former member of the Rebekahs Lodge. She worked many years at Kirkpatrick Variety and at the North English Library. Wilda died of an apparent heart attack on Monday, December 2, 2002 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo. She lived 84 years, 6 months and 17 days. Wilda is survived by her husband Myrlin of North English; a daughter Lynn Hickman and husband David of Aurelia, IA; a son Lanny Strausser and wife Ann of Waterloo, IA; six grandchildren: Jeanette, Jon & Joel Hickman, Sara, Adam & Erin Strausser; a great granddaughter Aimee Lynn Hickman; a sister Florence Ham of College Station, TX and a brother Harold (Bud) Seeger of Holt, MO. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Harry & Walter Seeger and a sister Irma Dodds Whitney. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, December 5, 2002 at the North English Christian Church with Pastor Don Ridenour officiating. Burial will be in the North English cemetery . Visitation will be held from 4 pm to 7 pm. at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Wednesday, December 4, 2002. A memorial fund has been established for the North English Christian Church.

Snedigar, Charles

KINROSS - Charles W. Snedigar, age 87 of Kinross, died Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following an extended illness. Charles was born February 12, 1915 in Worthington, Missouri to John and Emma (Campbell) Snedigar. He grew up in Missouri and received his education in country school there. Charles served in the C.C.C. in California for 15 months during 1933 and 1934. He then served in the Army Air Corps, entering in 1941 and serving for the duration of WWII. On February 9, 1946 Charles married Gladys Hagist at the Christian Church parsonage in Keota. The couple lived and farmed in the Keota and Kinross areas. Charles served on the Kinross town council and was a lifetime member of the Keota V.F.W. Survivors include his wife: Gladys Snedigar of Kinross; one daughter: Kathy Monaghan and husband Ron of Kinross; one son: John Snedigar and wife Cindy of Keota; six grandchildren: Brandon, Dawn and Nathan Monaghan, Samantha, Zane and Lucas Snedigar and one sister: Mary Smith of Phoenix City, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Reta VanNess, Pauline Morgan and one in infancy; one brother: Arthur Snedigar; two half brothers: Rollie and Rosco Golston and two half sisters: Dulcie and Lulu. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Rev. Don Ridenour officiating. Burial will be at Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. A general memorial fund has been established. KEOTA - Janet Ethel Hahn was born November 14, 1937 in Wapello County north of Agency, Iowa the daughter of Ralph and Ethel (Hills) Birkinbine. She attended Round Point School, graduated from Agency High School in 1955, and graduated from the Ottumwa Beauty Acadamy. On October 26, 1957 she was united in marriage to Kenneth Hahn in Keota. She has lived in the Keota community since 1957 where she was a homemaker and a wonderful grandmother. She was an excellent cook, gardener, an avid Hawkeye fan, and enjoyed camping. She was employed at Maplewood Manor as a nurses aide since 1986. Janet died on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at the Maplewood Manor in Keota of cancer at the age of 65 years. Janet is survived by a son Matthew Hahn and wife Janie of Keota; 2 daughters: Carla Morrison of Ottumwa and Lauralee Cude and husband Curtis of Portland, Oregon; 8 grandchildren: Noah, Gabriellle, Callie, Cara, and Isaiah Hahn; Cody Morrison, Waylon and Carson Cude; a sister Phyllis Utterback of Ottumwa; and 3 brothers: Alvin Birkinbine of Des Moines; James Birkinbine of Linwood, Pennsylvania and Ivan Birkinbine of Blue Grass. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Kenneth on July 27, 2001, an infant daughter Melissa Sue Hahn and a grandson, Elijah James Hahn. Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Friday, December 6, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz in charge of services. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be held from 4 - 8 P.M. on Thursday at the Funeral Home. A memorial fund has been established for Washington County Hospice.

KEOTA - Berniece Vogel, age 101 of Keota, died Monday, December 2, 2002 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following a brief illness. Berniece was born September 23, 1901 in East Pleasant Plain, Iowa to John and Kathryn (Adrian) Peiffer. She received her education at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic School. On September 1, 1925 Berniece married Carl A. Vogel at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek Township. The couple made their home in Clear Creek Township until moving to Keota in 1950. Berniece was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church, the Altar and Rosary Society and Reading Circle. She enjoyed bowling, playing cards, gardening and spending time with family. Survivors include three sons: Charles and wife Bernice of Blairstown, Hubert and wife Marge of Casper, Wyoming and Herbert and wife Elizabeth of Hereford, Texas; 18 grandchildren; 38 great grandchildren; six great, great grandchildren and one half sister, Dorothy Horras of Keota. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Carl in 1989; two grandsons: John and Gregory Vogel; two brothers: Arnold and Adrian Peiffer; one half sister Agnes Horras and three half brothers: Joe, Leon and Ed Hammes. Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 2002 at the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be at Ss. Peter and Paul cemetery in Clear Creek Township. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be an Altar and Rosary Society Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Ss. Peter and Paul cemetery or St. Mary Catholic Church. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Williamsburg - Ruth Collingwood of Decator, Illinois formerly of Williamsburg was born April 5, 1910, the daughter of Alfred and Estella Fransis Messer. She graduated from Victor High School. Ruth married Mervin Collingwood February 18, 1933 in Williamsburg, Iowa. Ruth was a homemaker and lived in the Iowa County area until 1988 when she moved to Decator. She was a former member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, then transferred her membership to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Decator. Ruth died Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at the Fair Haven Christian Home in Decator after a extended illness at the age of 92 years. She is survived by two son: Merle Collingwood and wife Mary Lou of Decator, Clark Collingwood and wife Peggy of Wilson, North Carolina; six grandchildren: Gregory Collingwood and wife Michele, David Collingwood and wife Rosemary, Timothy Collingwood and wife Renee, Kimberly Boykin and husband David, Cheryl Konecny and husband Steve and Danielle Tilley and husband Paul and eight great grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1973, two daughters: Maxine Doty and Linda Bowman; three sisters: Pearl Collingwood, Ada Leitzman and Ethel Skow; and a brother Paul Collingwood. Funeral Services will be Monday, December 2, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. in the ST. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran cemetery . Visitation will be Sunday, December 1, 2002 from 5 to 8 P.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg.
