Margaret Edna Lillis was born June 3, 1921 in Williamsburg, Iowa the daughter of Thomas M.. & Ellen A. Morrin Lillis.. She graduated from Williamsburg High School and has lived and worked in Williamsburg all of her life. Margaret was a life long member of the St. Mary Catholic Church in Williamsburg and was very involved in gardening and reading. Margaret died on Friday, November 22, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City afer a sudden illness at the age of 81 years, 5 months and 19 days. Margaret is survived by a sister - in - law Alta Lillis of Williamsburg; two nieces: Mary Ellen Montross and husband Charles of Deep River and Susie Williams of West Amana ; three nephews: Chuck Lillis and wife Bonnie of Marion - Gary Lillis of North Liberty and Jim Cash and wife Lucille of Lake Havasu City, Arizona. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother Thomas Lillis and a sister Mary Cash. Funeral Services are set for 10:30 am on Monday, November 25, 2002 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Williamsburg with Father Joseph Roost officiating. Burial is in the St. Mary cemetery . Visitation is from 3:30 - 7:00 pm Sunday at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg with a Prayer Service at 6:30 pm to be conducted by Chuck Lillis. A Memorial Fund has been established for the Williamsburg Public Library.

Charles R. Jordan, age 86, of New River, AZ and formerly of the North English area, died suddenly at his home in New River, on Tuesday November 19, 2002. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Sunday, November 24, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Elder David Bissel officiating. Burial will follow in the Piersol cemetery near North English. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Saturday, November 23rd from 4 pm to 8 pm. A memorial service is pending in Phoenix, AZ. He is survived by his wife Marie of New River, AZ; a daughter Rita Baker and husband Don of Miami, FL; two sons, Bill and J. B. Jordan both of Phoenix, AZ; ten grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Keith & Harry Jordan, an infant sister, and sister Pauline Reed. Charles was born on March 10, 1916 in the Green Valley Community near North English, IA, a son of Raymond and Mamie Long Jordan. His early years were spent farming in Iowa. Charles was united in marriage to Marie McAdams of Delta, IA on October 14, 1939 in Kirksville, MO. In 1948 Charles and his family moved to Arizona where he was a builder contractor until he retired. Charles spent his retirement years raising buffalo, deer and Brahma cattle. He was a member of the Glendale Seventh - day Adventist Church. He will be remembered by his kindness and willingness to help those in need. He was very much loved and will be missed by his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Keith & Harry Jordan, an infant sister, and sister Pauline Reed.

KEOTA - Vera E. Chapman, age 90, of Keota, died Monday, November 18, 2002 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following a brief illness. Vera was born October 1, 1912 in Keota to Edward and Gertrude (Berry) Conklin and received her education in country school. On July 24, 1929 Vera married Talley Chapman in Sigourney. A lifelong resident of the Keota community, Vera was a homemaker who enjoyed baking, fishing, mushroom hunting, sewing, needlework, playing cards, walking and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include five grandchildren: Wilbert Spencer, Jr. of Thompson, Illinois, Randy Lee Spencer of Savanna, Illinois, Mark Alan Spencer of Golden, Colorado, Candy Lou Spencer of Keota and Steven Lee Spencer of Clinton; six great grandchildren; one brother: Owen Dale Conklin of California and a son - in - law: Wilbert Spencer, Sr. of Clinton. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Talley in 1995; daughter: Betty Lou Spencer; three brothers: Paul, Cleo and Kenneth and one sister: Marvel. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 22, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Rev. Mary Horras officiating. Burial will be at Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 21, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. Memorials may be directed to the family. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Asnath Maudie Slagle was born Friday, November 3, 1916 near Kalona, Iowa the daughter of Milton and Catherine (Miller) Brenneman. She attended rural school. On August 11, 1938 she was united in marriage to Henry O. Slagle at her parents home in rural Kalona. She has lived in the Kalona and Wellman communities all her life where she worked at Maplecrest and was a homemaker. She was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church and WMSC. She volunteered at the Crowded Closet, Wellman Senior Center and Parkview Manor. Maudie died on Sunday, November 17, 2002 at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a lingering illness at the age of 86 years. Maudie is survived by a daughter - Janet Speas and husband Ralph of Waco, Texas; 3 sons - Kenneth Slagle and wife Linda of Atlanta, Georgia; Leonard Slagle of Wellman; Ivan Slagle and wife Betty of Plumerville, Arkansas; 7 grandchildren - John Speas, Kathy Lockhart, Roger Slagle, Cindy Slagle, Don Slagle, Cole Slagle, Gena McKim; and 4 great grandchildren - Andrea Speas, Alicia Speas, Chelsea McMurray, and Whitney McKim. Maudie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Henry in June of 1991; 2 brothers - Jacob Brenneman, Joseph Brenneman; and 4 sisters - Cora Hershberger; Lizzie Hershberger; Nona Newhouse; and Mamie Miller.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Wellman Mennonite Church and the Wellman Senior Center.

McDowell, Elnora

KEOTA - Elnora McDowell, age 75, of Keota, died on Saturday, November 16, 2002 at Maplewood Manor in Keota following a long illness. Elnora was born on April 3, 1927 near Stockport, IA, a daughter of Lloyd and Sarah Wells Miner. She graduated from Stockport High School and Iowa Wesleyan College. She worked several years at Lyle Insurance in Keota before teaching 10 years at the Kinross High School. Elnora married Robert F. McDowell on July 11, 1948 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They have made their home in the Keota community since their marriage. Elnora worked as the bookkeeper for McDowell Farms, was a member of the United Church of Faith in Keota, where she was an elder and a member of the United Presbyterian Women. She was a member of the Chapter AV T.T.T. Society and the Chapter CM of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and a member of the Alpha C Delta Sorority. Elnora enjoyed camping, boating, golfing and traveling. She liked sporting events, watching the Hawkeyes and spending time with her grandchildren. She is survived by her husband Robert of Keota; a daughter Gina Bennett and husband Kelly of Keota; a son Gerry McDowell and wife Irene of Keota; 3 grandchildren: Andrea & Christopher Bennett and Laura McDowell. Also surviving is a sister Flora Wheatly of Glenville West Virginia; two brothers: Lawrence Miner of Stockport and Harry Miner of Talahassee, FL.; 5 nephews and 2 nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Lloyd & Frank “Butch” Miner. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, November 19, 2002 at the United Church of Faith in Keota, with Rev. Melinda Chambers officiating. Burial will be in the Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 18, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. A memorial fund has been established for the United Church of Faith, Hospice of Washington County and Alzheimer's Research. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Redlinger, Ival

Ival Wendell Redlinger was born June 29, 1925 at Keota, Iowa the son of Bernard and Lulla Baker Redlinger. He was united in marriage to Iva E. Scalf on July 4, 1946 in Keota. He had been employed in sales by the Buckwalter Motors in Wellman until his retirement in 1987. He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Lions Club and the American Legion Polton Post #427. He served during World War II in the U.S. Navy and Coast Guard. Ival died Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospitals following a short illness at the age of 77. Ival is survived by a son, Ron and wife Mary of Washington, Iowa; 2 daughters, Wendy Klostermann and husband Bernie of Wellman and Rebecca Bush and husband Rick of Washington, Iowa, his mother, Lulla Redlinger of Wellman; 7 grandchildren, Christine, Robin, Ryan, Nathan, Andria, Roxanne and Rochelle; 5 great grandchildren, Trevor, Logan, Breah, Austin and Dalton; a brother, Lindy Redlinger of Wellman and a sister, Ladora Patterson of Wellman. He was preceded in death by his wife Iva in 2000, his father; his brother, Bernard Redlinger Jr.; and a sister, Margaret Miller. Memorial service will be Saturday, November 16, 2002 at 10:00 A.M. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Wellman. Burial will be in the Wellman cemetery . Visitation will be from 2 to 8 P.M. Friday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. With the family present from 6 to 8 P.M. and a prayer service and rosary at 7:30. Memorials are for the Wellman Senior Center or Ambulance.

Showman, Mabel

SIGOURNEY - Mabel Irene Showman, age 94, of Sigourney, died Wednesday, November 13, 2002 at the Sigourney Care Center following a brief illness. Mabel was born June 11, 1908 in Sigourney, Iowa to James and Mamie (Reed) Ryder and received her education in country school in Keokuk County. On August 20, 1927 she married Brady Showman in Oskaloosa, Iowa. A lifelong resident of Keokuk County, Mabel was a mother, grandmother and homemaker who enjoyed fishing with her husband, Brady, her children and grandchildren. She also loved working in her flower gardens. Survivors include seven children: Mildred Hartson and husband Evard of Cedar Rapids, Virginia Glick and husband Bill of Lusk, Wyoming, David Showman and wife Helen of Hedrick, Dan Showman of Martinsburg, Donald Showman and wife Sharon of Bloomfield, Connie Messerschmitt and husband Gary of Hedrick, Thomas Showman and wife Kathy of Sedalia, Missouri; 44 grandchildren; 80 great grandchildren; 24 great great grandchildren and one great great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Brady; two daughters: Mary and Dorothy; four grandchildren: Susan, Donnie Robert, Bruce and Ron and 13 brothers and sisters. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 16, 2002 at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be at Rayburn cemetery in rural Hedrick. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, November 15, 2002 at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Sigourney Care Center.

Long, Eileen

SIGOURNEY - Eileen Long, age 98, of Sigourney, died Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney following a brief illness. Eileen was born October 23, 1904 in Fonda, Iowa to Bernard Albert and Minnie Alice (Paulin) McKenzie. As an infant, Eileen’s family moved to the Delta area. She attended school in Delta and graduated from high school in 1922. Eileen attended college for her teaching degree in Cedar Falls and at the University of Iowa and began to teach in rural schools. On May 4, 1929 she married Paul H. Long in Sigourney. The couple farmed for several years and moved to Keswick following retirement from the farm. Eileen continued her teaching career and was a teacher in rural schools in Keokuk and Mahaska Counties and later taught in the Webster and Kinross schools. She also continued to further her education by graduated from William Penn with a Bachelor’s of Arts Degree in 1970 and then retired from teaching in 1972. Eileen was a member of the Garden Club, Rebekah Lodge both in Keswick and enjoyed gardening, teaching and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include three daughters: Rita Maye Collins and husband Alvah of Marshalltown, Leta Moore and husband Robert of Dallas, Iowa and Carma Lea Davis of Haverhill; 13 grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; one sister Lovina Stanley of Moriarty, New Mexico, nieces, nephews and many special others. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul on September 15, 1977; four grandchildren; one great grandson; two sisters : Eula “Jude” Utterback and Neva in infancy and two sons - in - law: Harold Davis and Harry Dullard, Junior. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, November 15, 2002 at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Rev. Don Ridenour officiating. Burial will be at Sorden cemetery . Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, November 14, 2002 at Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where the family will greet friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Keswick United Methodist Church. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

SIGOURNEY - Mary M. Seaba, age 99, of Sigourney, died Friday, November 8, 2002 at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney following a lengthy illness. Mary was born March 15, 1903 in Clear Creek Township, Keokuk County, Iowa to Frank and Margaret (Meicher) Ollinger. She grew up in the Clear Creek community and graduated from St. Mary High School in Keota. On June 2, 1925 Mary married Frank Seaba at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Clear Creek Township. The couple moved to Sigourney in 1936 and Mary became a resident at Manor House Care Center in 1992. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, was active in the Altar and Rosary Society and enjoyed reading, praying, flowers and watching basketball. Survivors include one daughter: Geraldine Pacha and husband Donald of Fairfield; two sons: Denis Seaba and wife Marguerite of Sigourney and E. Dale Seaba and wife Neva of LaJunta, Colorado; six grandchildren; four great grandchildren and one great great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Frank in 1984; two brothers: John and Clarence Ollinger and five sisters: Clara Wickenkamp, Zelda Wickenkamp, Margaret Smith, Emma Striegel and Christina Maughan. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 12, 2002 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Catholic cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 11, 2002 at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where there will be a rosary service at 7:30 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Manor House Activity Fund.

KEOTA - Annie “Ann” Miller, age 96, of Keota, died Thursday, November 7, 2002 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following a brief illness. Ann was born April 29, 1906 in Thomas, Oklahoma to David and Delila (Yoder) Gingerich. She grew up in Oklahoma and received her education in country school. On December 1, 1923 Ann married Christian Miller in Thomas, Oklahoma. Ann moved to Iowa in 1939 and lived in the Kalona, Wellman and Iowa City communities until moving to Keota in 1973. Ann worked in the laundry department at the V.A. Hospital for four years and at the University of Iowa Hospitals for 14 years before retiring in 1971. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge, Legion Auxiliary, Wellman Rural Club and the Royal Neighbors and enjoyed crocheting, reading, flowers, gardening and watching soap operas. Survivors include one son: Elmer (Doc) and wife Dorothy of Bella Vista, Arkansas; two daughters: Mary Ellen Ritchie of Cedar Rapids and Dorothy Jean Enfield of Washington; 22 grandchildren; 45 great grandchildren; 10 great great grandchildren; one daughter - in - law: Laura “Sarie” Miller of Mt. Pleasant and one sister: Minnie Yoder of Millersburg, Indiana. She was preceded in death by her parents, step father: Joseph Bontrager; one son: Alvin David Miller in 1999; one great grandson: Joey Corbett; two brothers: Joni and Eli Gingerich two sisters: Alma Lambright and Fannie Yoder; one half sister: Millie Mathis and seven step brothers. Funeral services are will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, November 11, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Rev. Don Hodson officiating. Burial will be at Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, November 10, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where the family will be present. Memorials may be directed to the American Legion Auxiliary. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

WILKINS, LELAND R.
February 10, 1920 - October 25, 2002
Leland Rolla Wilkins, age 82 of Keswick, died Friday, October 25, 2002 following a short illness at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Graveside services with military rites will be held in the Sorden cemetery near Keswick at 10:00 AM on Monday, October 28th with Pastor James Stout officiating. Visitation will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English on Sunday (today) from 4 PM to 8 PM. A general memorial fund has been established. He is survived by two daughters: Lynne Dennis and husband Jerry of Keswick, IA; Vicki Eaton and husband Shawn of Floris, IA; a son Pastor. Brian Wilkins and his wife Joyce of Waverly, IA; 11 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren. Leland was preceded in death by his parents, wife Arlene in January 1979, a daughter LaDonna Seaba, brothers Donald, Clifford & Emmett, and a sister Minnie Rutledge. Leland was born on February 10, 1920 near Webster, IA, a son of Rolla and Myrtle Looney Wilkins. He attended and graduated from Keswick High School in 1938. He was inducted in the U.S. Army in May 1942. On October 7, 1942 Leland married H. Arlene Winegarden in Sherman, TX. He served in New Guinea and the southern Philippines during World War II. Leland lived most of his life in Keswick where he worked 38 years with the US Postal Service as a mail carrier. He retired in December 1980. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and being with his family. Leland coached several baseball teams in Keswick and enjoyed watching the kids play. He was a member of the James Murphy American Legion Post #319.

Elsie May (Arch) Canott was born May 27, 1919 in London, England the daughter of William and Violet Arch. She graduated from high school in London. Elsie was in the Women's Arm of the Royal Air Force for 3 years. She was visiting her sister and brother in Bristol, England when she met John J. Canott who was stationed there at the time in 1944. When John's army buddy met and courted Elsie's sister Babs and later married her, John hated to break up a pair of sisters so he married Elsie at the old church at Pinner which is north of London on January 20, 1945. She was a wonderful housewife. She worked at the Shenk nursing home for nine years starting washing dishes and then working in the kitchen helping cook and serve the food. Ezra Shenk always called her "London" because of her birth place. Her father William is buried in Hatfield, England having died over their while visiting his son. Her mother Violet is buried in the Wellman cemetery . Elsie died on Sunday, October 20, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City of Wegener's Vasculitis at the age of 83 years. Elsie will be missed by a host of friends and by her husband John of Kalona; a brother Royston Arch of Durham, England; a brother - in - law Stanley Banach; a sister - in - law Reita Arch; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister - Jeanette "Babs" ; a sister - in - law and a niece. May the Lord find a good home for her.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the American Cancer Society.
