Marie Doris Huber was born December 3, 1925 near South English, Iowa the daughter of Earl and Ethel (Bouslog) Herr. She graduated from Keota High School in 1943 and attended Coe College. On March 3, 1946 she was united in marriage to Herbert Huber in South English, Iowa. They lived in the Keota and Wellman communities where she worked as a teller at the Wellman Savings Bank for 20 years before retiring in 1988. She was a member of the United Church of Faith in Keota where she was active in the women's group. She was a former 4 - H leader, she served on the Washington County 4 - H Council Committee, and was a member of PEO and Wellman Ladies Embroidery Club. Marie died unexpectedly on Monday, October 7, 2002 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 76 years. Marie is survived by her husband Herbert of Wellman; 2 daughters - Linda Birney and husband David of Washington; Margaret Brinning and husband Lanny of Keota; a son - Jay Huber and wife Patricia of Wellman; 2 grandchildren - Christine Birney and Kyle Huber; 3 step grandchildren - Michelle Clarahan and husband Ryan, Allen Miller and Matthew Miller; and a step great granddaughter - Heidi Clarahan; 4 sisters - Helen Mayer of Crestview, Florida, Beatrice Huber of Cedar Rapids; Cleo Wilhelm of Los Osos, California; and Joyce Erdahl and husband Al of Monticello. Marie was preceded in death by her parents, a step great granddaughter - Mallory Clarahan; and a brother - Ralph Herr.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Untied Church of Faith, Wellman Ambulance and Wellman Scofield Public Library.

Swantz, Lewis

Lewis E. Swantz was born August 29, 1930 near Kalona, Iowa the son of Emmet and Anna (Helmuth) Swantz. He attended West Lincoln rural school. On January 17, 1952 he was united in marriage to Mary Gingerich. They lived in the Kalona community where he farmed until moving to Mobile, Alabama in 1985 where he worked in maintenance and as a groundskeeper until retiring in 2000. He was a member of the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church and he attended the Mobile Mennonite Church. Lewis died on Sunday, October 6, 2002 at his home in Mobile, Alabama following a brief illness at the age of 72 years. Lewis is survived by his wife Mary of Mobile, Alabama; a son Norman Swantz and wife Sandy of Kalona; 4 daughters - Nelda Summers and husband Chris of Atmore, Alabama; Gloria Hochstedler and husband Darwin; Junell Swantz; Lorna Yoder and husband Clair all of Kalona; 8 grandchildren; 2 brothers - Wilson Swantz and Chuck Swantz of Kalona; and 2 sisters - Amelia Yoder and Barbara Miller of Kalona. Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Jonas Swantz; and a sister Fannie Yoder.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Sunnyside Conservative Mennonite Church and the Mobile Mennonite Church.

GERARD, OPAL P.
September 19, 1917 - February 01, 2003
Millersburg, Iowa
Opal P. Gerard was born on September 9, 1917 in Dayton Township, Iowa County, Iowa, a daughter of Willis and Edna Hillman Shaull. She attended Millersburg schools and became a member of the Millersburg United Methodist Church. Opal married John Middlekauff in 1936. They were later divorced. On July 30, 1941 she married Ervin John Gerard in Kirksville, MO. He preceded her in death in December 1974. Opal worked ten years as a cook for the Deep River - Millersburg Schools and later as a cook at the Home Town Café in Millersburg. She loved being with her family, sewing, crocheting, quilting and that occasional trip to the casino in Tama. Opal has been a resident of the Williamsburg Care Center in Williamsburg the past ten years. She died on Saturday, February 1, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after a lengthy illness. She lived 85 years, 4 months and 23 days. She is survived by two sons: Norman Middlekauff & his wife Brigid of Jacksonville, FL, and Charles Middlekauff of North English, IA; two daughters: Joan Miller - Strasser & her husband Larry of South English, IA and Janice Garringer & her husband Charles of Conroy, IA; two sisters Fern Grimm of North English, IA and Edna Carter of Luzurne, IA. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 1 great great grandchild and 2 step grandchildren. Opal was preceded in death by her parents, husband Ervin J. Gerard, brothers Jerry & Alfred Shaull and sister Lela Schultz. Memorial services will be held at 10 AM on Tuesday, February 4, 2003 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Pastor Don Ridenour officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 PM to 8 PM Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Community cemetery west of Millersburg.

Norenberg, Yvonne

KEOTA - Yvonne Adelle Norenberg, age 75, of Keota, died Saturday, February 1, 2003, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a lengthy illness. Yvonne was born March 31, 1927, in Elmhurst, Illinois, to Samuel and Edna (Thompson) Myers. She grew up in Mount Pleasant, graduated from Mount Pleasant High School and attended Iowa Wesleyan College for two years, graduating with an A.A. in Education. On September 2, 1950, Yvonne married Donald “Dick” Norenberg at the Methodist Church in Keota. Following marriage the couple made their home in Keota, where Yvonne was a homemaker. She was a member of the Congregational Church in Mount Pleasant, bridge club and a former member of the T.T.T. Society in Keota. Yvonne enjoyed sewing, knitting, playing games, golfing and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband: Dick Norenberg of Keota; three daughters: Vickie Lynn Flynn and husband Dan of Keota, Connie Sue Tuttle and husband Keith of Grimes and Terri Jo Hawkins and husband Dennis of Tiffin; eight grandchildren; one brother: Bill Myers of Fairbank and one sister: Marylu Knox of El Cajon, California. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: James and Donn and one grandson: Ryan Jay Tuttle. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 4, 2003, at the United Church of Faith in Keota with Rev. Melinda Chambers officiating. Burial will be at Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, February 3, 2003, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where the family will be present from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the Wilson Memorial Library. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Niva Etta Burkholder was born April 11, 1910 near Wellman, Iowa the daughter of Levi and Magdalene (Beechy) Miller. She attended Hickory Grove and Franklin rural schools. On July 21, 1933 she was united in marriage to Edward R. Burkholder in Wellman. They lived and farmed in the Wellman community for over 50 years. She has been a partner with her daughter at Stitch and Sew in Kalona since 1981. She was a faithful member of the Wellman Mennonite Church where she served on several committees, and was active with the Iowa Mennonite Relief Sale for several years. She enjoyed gardening, sewing and spending time with her family. Niva died on Sunday, January 26, 2003 at her daughter's home near Wellman following a brief illness at the age of 92 years. Niva is survived by a daughter - Dorothy Schumann and husband Paul of Wellman; a son - Donald Burkholder of Colorado Springs, Colorado; 10 grandchildren;18 great grandchildren; 2 sisters - Magdalena Stutzman of Littleton, Colorado; Joy Levien of Iowa City. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Edward in February 1993; an infant sister - Pearl; and 3 brothers - Nelson Miller, Chester L. Miller and Vernon Miller.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Iowa Mennonite Relief Sale.

Hammes, Floyd J.
February 22, 1927 - January 21, 2003
SIGOURNEY - Floyd Hammes, age 75, of Sigourney, died Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at his home following a lengthy illness. Floyd was born February 22, 1927 in Clear Creek Township, Keokuk County, Iowa to Peter and Teresa (Gries) Hammes. He grew up in the Clear Creek area and graduated from St. Elizabeth Catholic High School. Floyd served in the United States Army from June of 1945 until November of 1946, being honorably discharged as a Tec 5. On April 17, 1948 he married Jeanette Merz at St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota. A lifelong resident of Keokuk County, Floyd farmed and was an independent businessman, selling fertilizer for many years until his retirement. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, the Knights of Columbus, the American Legion and the Iowa Angus Association. Floyd also served on the Keokuk County Expo Board and was a leader for the Prairie Rustlers 4 - H Club. He enjoyed John Deere tractors, golfing, playing cards, dancing, camping, the Iowa State Fair, going south for the winter and hunting and fishing with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include his wife: Jeanette of Sigourney; two daughters: Sheila Beckman and husband Matthew of Crystal Lake, IL and Cindy Hauschilt and husband Steve of What Cheer; five sons: Dan and wife Sue of Johnston, Ted and wife Terri of Story City, Scott and wife Cindy of Ankeny, Lynn and wife Christine of Iowa Falls, Todd and wife Valerie of Charleston, WV; 18 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; four brothers: Raymond of Coralville, Omer of Harper, Herb of Sigourney and Wilfred of Bettendorf and two sisters: Irene Willis of Bettendorf and Bernice Heuberger of Milwaukee, OR. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, January 24, 2003 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. Interment will be at St. Elizabeth Catholic cemetery in Harper. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, January 23, 2003 at Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where there will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Thursday followed by a Knights of Columbus Rosary. Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Keokuk County or St. Mary Catholic Church. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements. KEOTA - H. Claudine Flander, age 80, of Keota, died Monday, January 20, 2003 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following a brief illness. Claudine was born October 17, 1922 in Harper, Iowa to Carl and Loretta (Clarahan) Beinhart. She grew up in Harper and graduated from St. Elizabeth Catholic School in 1941. On July 15, 1947 she married Bernard F. Flander in Harper. Following marriage the couple made their home in Keota where they owned and operated Bernie’s Meat Processing until 1985. Claudine was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota and the Altar and Rosary Society. Survivors include one son: Douglas Flander and wife Charlotte of Clive; one daughter: Robin Shull and husband Ron of Washington; two grandchildren: Tracie Sullivan and husband Peter of Dallas, Texas and Dawn Stahly and husband Steve of Clive; two step grandchildren: Heather Jacobs and husband Eric of Ankeny and Jason Shull and wife Jill of Kalamazoo, Michigan; four great grandchildren; four step great grandchildren; three sisters: Bernadine Sieren of Keota, Burnita Sieren of Ottumwa and Betty Adam of Fairfield and two brothers: Keith Beinhart of Sigourney and Robert Beinhart of Harper. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Bernard in 1985 and two sisters: Helen Pence and Theola Beinhart. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, January 23, 2003 at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. There will be an Altar and Rosary Society Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary Catholic Church or the Wilson Memorial Library. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Helen M. Griffith was born Sunday, February 23, 1908 in Wellman, Iowa the daughter of John and Emaline (Hoffer) Birkey. She graduated from Wellman High School in 1926. She then taught rural school for several years. On August 20, 1932 she was united in marriage to Calvin Griffith in Morrison, Illinois. She lived her entire life in the Wellman Community. She worked as a mail clerk in the Wellman Post Office for many years. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, and was a charter member of TTT. She enjoyed playing the piano and painting. Helen died on Friday, January 17, 2003 at the Parkview Manor in Wellman following a brief illness at the age of 94 years. Helen is survived by 7 nieces and nephews - Ann Britton and husband Dale of Kalona; Helen Hynes and husband Larry of Mexico, Missouri; Elizabeth Riggs and husband Ed of Greensboro, North Carolina; Lois Topping and husband Bill of Kenosha, Wisconsin; Richard Griffith and wife Gilberta of Wellman; Paulette Harmon and husband David of Clarksville, Tennessee; and Fred Gislain and wife Pat of Naperville, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Calvin in March of 1982; 2 sisters - Dorothy Hamilton, Lucille Wallace; and a brother - Oran Birkey.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Asbury United Methodist Church and the Wellman Senior Center.

KEOTA - Helen R. Mayer, age 87, of Niceville, Florida, formerly of Keota, died Wednesday, January 15, 2003, at Parthenon Healthcare in Crestview, Florida. Helen was born October 17, 1915 in South English, Iowa to Earl and Ethel (Bouslog) Herr. She graduated from South English High School and Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Helen taught in rural schools in the area prior to her marriage to Richard W. Mayer on October 1, 1938. Following marriage the couple lived and farmed in the Keota and Washington areas. Helen moved to Niceville, Florida in August of 2000. She was a member of P.E.O., rural community clubs and card clubs, and was a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Helen enjoyed cooking, flowers, playing cards and spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include two daughters: Judith A. Norenberg and husband Gary of McHenry, Mississippi and Jeri L. Bullis and husband Michael of Niceville, Florida; four grandchildren: Gina Burnham of Omaha, Nebraska, Lance Norenberg and wife Ursula of Germany, Traci Owens and husband Keith of Harvard, Illinois and Eric Bullis and fiancee Naomi Leavitt of Niceville, Florida; four great grandchildren: Michael, Brandi, Paige and Isaac and three sisters: Beatrice Huber of Cedar Rapids, Cleo Wilhelm of Los Osas, California and Joyce Erdahl of Monticello. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Richard; brother: Ralph Herr and sister: Marie Huber. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 22, 2003 at the United Church of Faith in Keota with Rev. Melinda Chambers officiating. Interment will be at Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. WILLIAMSBURG - Vera Alice Dietrich was born December 8, 1918 at home in Troy township, Iowa county, Iowa, the daughter of Rollo and Effie Walter Peirce. She received her education in rural Iowa county school. Vera was united in marriage to Elmer August William Dietrich on October 10, 1936 at the Trinity United Church of Christ parsonage. Together they farmed for 34 years until Elmer’s death November 23, 1970. Vera then moved to Western Knolls in Williamsburg August 6, 1971. She worked as a cook for the school for 10 years retiring in 1982. She was a member of the Trinity United Church of Christ. Vera died Friday, January 3, 2003 at the Rose Haven Nursing Home in Marengo after a long illness at the age of 84 years. Vera is survived by son David Dietrich and wife Deloris; a daughter Karol Dietrich all of Williamsburg; three grandchildren: Debra Wrede and husband Gary of Tiffin, Paul Dietrich and wife Rhonda of Williamsburg and Daryl Dietrich and wife Lisa of Belmond, Iowa; nine great grandchildren: Justin and Dane Dermody, Seth, Brett, Kelsey, Sarah, Noah, Hannah and Leah Dietrich; three sisters: Leona Peirce of Marengo, Ruth Stevens of Sumner and Florence Gorsh of Victor; a sister in law Lilly Peirce of Williamsburg. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and an infant daughter Barbara Ann and a brother Leighton Peirce. Funeral services will be Monday, January 6, 2003 at 10:30 A.M. at Trinity United Church of Christ rural Marengo. Pastor Dick Schafbuch will officiate. Burial will be at the Zion cemetery south of Ladora. Visitation will be at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Sunday. In Lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Hospice of Compassion for Iowa County.
