Sherman W. Butterbaugh was born November 9,1914 in Daytonville, Iowa, the son of Luther ‘Lute' S. and Wilhemina ‘Mina' Hux Butterbaugh. He attended rural schools. On January 9, 1937 he was united in marriage to Maxine Nicola in Muscatine, Iowa. He lived in the Wellman area most all of his life. Sherman worked at Maplecrest for 18 years, Earl Yoder Construction for many years, and was a custodian for Mid - Prairie Schools for 16 years. He enjoyed watching the Chicago Cubs, fishing, and hunting. He was a member of the Wellman Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife Maxine, two daughters: Shirley Jean and husband Mel Pitzen of Marshalltown and Ruth Ellen Hunt of Black Hawk, South Dakota; 6 grandchildren, 12 great granchildren, 3 great great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Berniece Kinner of Davenport, Pearl Paintin of Iowa City, and Cordelle Brooks of Michigan. Sherman was preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers and sisters; a brother - in - law, Gerald Nicola; and a son - in - law, Stan Jeffords.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Wellman Baptist Church and the Wellman Ambulance.

Edna M. Stutzman was born March 5, 1926 in Milford, Nebraska, the daughter of Joseph and Freida Reeb Kennel. She attended a rural school in Strang, Nebraska. On December 16, 1945 she was united in marriage to Omar J. Stutzman. She lived in Shickley until the fall of 1970 then moved to Florence, Colorado until her husband's death on October 5, 2001. Edna then moved to the Wellman area. She did volunteer work while in Florence, Colorado and also at the Crowded Closet in Iowa City. Edna was a member of the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church. Edna died Thursday, December 26, 2002 at the University of Iowa Hospital after a sudden illness at the age of 76 years, 9 months, 21 days. She is survived by a son; Gary Stutzman and wife Vicki of Ames, Iowa, a daughter: JoAnn Miller and husband Eldon, of Wellman,, 5 grandchildren: Alaina and husband John Hathaway of Lovilla, Iowa, Jason Stutzman and wife Julie of Fayetteville, North Carolina, Angie Shaw and husband Richie of Center Point, Iowa, Monica Bromley and husband Korey of Goshen, Indiana, Ledru and fiancé, Annette Yoder of Wellman, and 8 great grandchildren: Garret Hathaway, Jack Hathaway, Alyssa Hathaway, Dane Hathaway, Queen Hathaway, Grayson Stutzman, Calli Shaw, and Ainsley Shaw. Edna was preceded in death by her husband Omar who died on October 5, 2001, her parents, two brothers: Oran Kennel and Joseph Kennel, Jr.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Parkview Manor Chaplaincy Program.

WILLIAMSBURG - Ethel Ione Flanagan was born November 11, 1917 in Green Valley Township of Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Merrill and Elizabeth Martha Powers Johnston. She attended rural Iowa County Schools and was united in marriage to James D. Flanagan on August 14, 1945 in What Cheer, Iowa. Ethel has lived at 603 Chatham in Williamsburg since 1948. She worked as a Nurses Aide at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City for many years. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Williamsburg, the Altar and Rosary Society and the V.F.W. Ladies Auxiliary. Ethel died at the age of 85, on Thursday, December 19, 2002 after a brief illness at the Williamsburg Care Center in Williamsburg where she has been a resident the past two years. Ethel is survived by two daughters: Susan Curry and husband Robert of Williamsburg and Caren Sinn and husband Raymond of Williamsburg; a son David Flanagan of Riverside, California; 12 grandchildren: Brenda Curry Martzke, Aileen Curry, Michelle Bacon Curry, Aaron Curry, Jeff Sinn, Jennifer Sinn Soukup, Jessica Sinn, Jamie Sinn, Ione Flanagan, Devin Flanagan, Megan Flanagan and Trevor Flanagan. 7 great grandchildren: Cutler Albright, Jake Harney, Kelsey Harney, Lindsey Harney Jack Bacon, Joe Bacon and Ethan Trimpe; and a sister Mabel O’Brien of North English. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Ione, two sisters: Edith Bower and Edna Johnston and six brothers: Ernest, Everett, Carl, Richard, Raymond and Allen. Services are set for 10:00 am on Monday, December 23, 2002 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Williamsburg with Father Joseph Roost officiating. Burial is in the Calvary cemetery in Marengo. Visitation will be from 3:00 - 8:00 pm on Sunday at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg with a Rosary Service at 7:30 pm. A general memorial fund has been established. Sailor, Wanda

KEOTA - Wanda Lee Sailor, age 78, of Keota, died Wednesday, December 18, 2002 at Maplewood Manor in Keota following a brief illness. Wanda was born November 30, 1924 in Hamilton, Kansas, to Fred and Gladys (Carson) Williams and graduated from Hamilton High School. On September 8, 1946 she married Ray B. Sailor in Hamilton, Kansas. The couple moved to Iowa in 1957 and to Keota in 1965. They owned and operated Sailor Dry Cleaners in Keota, Wellman and Kalona. Wanda worked as a custodian at the Mid - Prairie Schools for 15 years, retiring in 1990. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Keota and enjoyed reading and watching soap operas. Survivors include three daughters: Paula Bell and husband Robert of Keota, Tana Stephens and husband William of Plano, Texas and Cheryl Van Duyn and husband William of Naples, Florida; one son: Loren Sailor and wife Jenni of Phoenix, Arizona; 8 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; one sister: Betty Castle of Eureka, Kansas and two brothers: Frank and Stanley Williams, both of Eureka, Kansas. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Ray in 1979; one sister: Patty Williams and two brothers: Walter and Jack Williams. Graveside services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, December 21, 2002 at Keota cemetery with Rev. Melinda Chambers officiating. Burial will be at Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, December 20, 2002 at Powell Funeral Home in Keota. A general memorial fund has been established.

Wade, Dean R.

Dean R. Wade age 83 of Mission, Texas and formerly of Wellman, Iowa died peacefully on Wednesday, December 11, 2002 at the Comfort House in McAllen, Texas following a lengthy illness. Dean was born January 21, 1919 near Wellman, Iowa the son of Alexis "Leck" and Edith (Chapman) Wade. He graduated from Wellman High School in 1937, then proudly served in the U.S. Navy. At the conclusion of WWII, he was serving aboard the USS Chandeleur in the Pacific Front. On March 6, 1946 he married Florence Leona Samuel of Chicago. After farming in Iowa and Washington counties for nearly 40 years, he and Florence traded the cornfields of Iowa for the grapefruit trees in Mission, Texas in 1985. Dean was a 65 year member of the International Order of Odd Fellows and a 59 year member of the American Legion. He will long be remembered for the strong bond established with fellow shipmen, his love of the University of Iowa athletics, finesse during a good game of hearts with his friends, his dry sense of humor and the enjoyment he received from working in his retirement yard. Dean is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Florence; son Tom and wife Ann McDonald of Fort Worth, Texas; son Mick of Washington; daughter Sandie Augustine and husband Mike of Cedar Rapids; and daughter Roberta "Bunny" Peiffer and husband Dan of Keota; 11 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and sisters Ruth Lorack of Hills and Gayle Huebner of Iowa Falls. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son Bruce; brothers Le Monte, Calvin, and Daryle; and a sister Helen Romine.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Comfort House and the Sandi Jo Funk Hospice.

Schaefer, Linda Sue

Williamsburg - Linda Sue Schaefer was born June 12, 1949 in Rockwell, Iowa the daughter of Raymond Arthur and Marian Verna Petersen Campbell. Linda was raised in Rockwell, Iowa from 1949 - 1971. She graduated from Rockwell Community High School in 1967 and received a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa in 1971. She taught at Lincoln Community School in Stanwood, Iowa from 1971 - 1975. Linda married L. Eugene Schaefer on June 15, 1974 in Rockwell, Iowa. Together they lived in Clarence, Iowa, Conroy, Iowa and moved to Williamsburg in 1989. She has also taught in the Williamsburg School System for a year. Linda has worked at the Landmark Restaurant in Williamsburg for 16 years, as a proof reader/copy editor for the MPC NEWSpapers of Iowa County for 3 years. Linda was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Rockwell where she was baptized and confirmed, the First Lutheran Church in Conroy where she was the choir director for 20 years and also was the choir director for the sister church Trinity Lutheran Church in Norway. In 1996 she became a member of St. Paul United Methodist Church in Williamsburg were she was very active as the Director of Music. She was also a member of the Cedar Rapids Emmaus Community. Linda died Tuesday, December 10, 2002 at the Williamsburg Care Center in Williamsburg after an extended illness at the age of 53 years. She is survived by her husband Gene; a son Brad Schaefer and wife Darcy of Williamsburg; a daughter Becca Schaefer of Iowa City; her mother Marian Campbell of Rockwell; three brothers: David Campbell and wife Jill of Pleasant Hill, Brian Campbell of Clear Lake and Douglas Campbell and wife Maureen of Ft. Wayne, Indiana. Linda is preceded in death by her father Raymond. A Celebration of Life will be Friday, December 13, 2002 at 10:30 A.M. in the St. Mary Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Rev. Susan LeBlanc will officiate. Burial will be at the First Lutheran cemetery north of Conroy. Visitation will be Thursday, December 12, 2002 from 2 to 8 P.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for a scholarship fund for a graduating senior going into music education.

Jonas D. Miller was born August 18, 1932 near Kalona, Iowa the son of Dennis and Ida (Helmuth) Miller. On May 6, 1954 he was united in marriage to Lena Hochstedler near Kalona. He spent 2 years in Fort Wayne, Indiana with 1W service. He has lived all of his life in the Kalona community where he was a farmer. He was a member of the Kalona Community Amish Church. Jonas died suddenly on Saturday, December 7 2002 at his home near Kalona at the age of 70 years, 3 months and 19 days. Jonas is survived by his wife Lena of Kalona; 2 sons - Marion and wife Katie Mae of Walhonding, OH.; Linus and wife Martha Fern of Gap, PA.; 4 daughters - Irene Miller and friend Rich Buser; Ila Miller and husband Henry; Carolyn Weiss and husband Herb all of Kalona; Marcille Linscheid and husband Jeff of North English; 19 grandchildren - Donald, Ronald, Lucille, Jacob, Treva, Matthew, Kirsten, Justin, Joel, Keith, Larissa, Renfred, Rylan, Rexine, Renita, and Retha Miller, Zach and Lauryn Weiss, Jordan Linscheid; a brother - Rudy D. Miller of Kalona; and 7 sisters - Verna Weaver of Kalona; Emma Swartzentruber of Costa Rica; Mary D. Miller of Kalona; Bertha Brenneman of Kalona; Eunice Stutzman of Kinross; Lavina Hochstedler of Grand Blanc, MI.; and Elsie Miller of Kalona. Jonas was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter - in - law Nancy J. Miller; a brother - Simon; and a sister - Amelia Miller.

Debler, Mina

Mina B. Debler was born August 2, 1915 in rural North English, Iowa the daughter of Ora G. and Bertha Wade Hall. She attended rural Champion Hill School and was united in marriage to Alfred C. Debler on December 29, 1939 in Sigourney, Iowa. She was employed by the Wellman Super Value for 20 years, retiring in 1976. Mina lived in the Wellman Community all of her life until moving to Lantern Park Care Center in 1996. She loved to sew and crochet, loved to visit, read and cook and enjoyed flowers and gardening. Her children and family were very special to her whether it be her immediate family, her neighborhood family, or her Lantern Park family. She was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church. Mina died Saturday, December 8, 2002 at the Lantern Park Nursing Home in Coralville at the age of 87. Mina is survived by a daughter, Karen Smith and husband Steve of Alpharetta, Georgia; a son, Donald Debler and wife Vicki of Hammond, Wisconsin; 3 grandchildren, Steven Smith, Tad Debler, and Toni Debler;and 5 great grandchildren; a brother, Leo Hall of Wellman, Iowa; a sister, Eloise Swink of North English, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband on October, 20, 2001; and a brother, Cleo Hall. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A,M. Monday December 9th, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Rev. Richard Pippert will officiate. Burial will be in the Wellman cemetery . Visitation will be at 4:00 to 6:00 P.M. Sunday, December 8th at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Wellman. A memorial fund has been established for the Asbury United Methodist Church and the Lantern Park Nursing Home.

Ann Theresa Ascherl was born December 4, 1935 in Romania the daughter of Geroge and Vita (Mateu) Covrig. She moved to Omaha, Nebraska with her family. She graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Omaha. She has lived in Omaha and then in Gilbert, Arizona where she worked as a Administrative Assistant at Arizona State University. She has lived in Kalona for the past 5 months. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Gilbert, Arizona. Ann died on Friday, December 6, 2002 at her daughters home in Kalona following a 3 month illness. She was 67 years old. Ann is survived by 3 sons - Glen Peters of Palmer, Nebraska; Mark Peters of Chandler, Arizona; Greg Peters of Omaha, Nebraska; a daughter - Lynne Holdeman of Kalona, Iowa; 6 grandchildren - Lisa Hannum; Jennifer Peters; Amanda Skow; Jenna Skow; Sarah Skow and Christian Holdeman; a sisters - Eva Siderewicz of Phoenix, Arizona; and many family and friends in Romania. She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother - George Covrig.

Snedigar, Charles

KINROSS - Charles W. Snedigar, age 87 of Kinross, died Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following an extended illness. Charles was born February 12, 1915 in Worthington, Missouri to John and Emma (Campbell) Snedigar. He grew up in Missouri and received his education in country school there. Charles served in the C.C.C. in California for 15 months during 1933 and 1934. He then served in the Army Air Corps, entering in 1941 and serving for the duration of WWII. On February 9, 1946 Charles married Gladys Hagist at the Christian Church parsonage in Keota. The couple lived and farmed in the Keota and Kinross areas. Charles served on the Kinross town council and was a lifetime member of the Keota V.F.W. Survivors include his wife: Gladys Snedigar of Kinross; one daughter: Kathy Monaghan and husband Ron of Kinross; one son: John Snedigar and wife Cindy of Keota; six grandchildren: Brandon, Dawn and Nathan Monaghan, Samantha, Zane and Lucas Snedigar and one sister: Mary Smith of Phoenix City, Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Reta VanNess, Pauline Morgan and one in infancy; one brother: Arthur Snedigar; two half brothers: Rollie and Rosco Golston and two half sisters: Dulcie and Lulu. Funeral services will be held at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, December 5, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota with Rev. Don Ridenour officiating. Burial will be at Keota cemetery . Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements. Condolences may be e - mailed to the family at www.powellfuneralhomes.com.
