Isola Naomi Halverson was born February 6, 1905 in Williamsburg, Iowa the daughter of Charles G. and Phoebe J. Chappell Durr. She graduated from Williamsburg High School. Isola was united in marriage to Clarence F. (Bun) Halverson on January 14, 1930 at the Methodist Parsonage in Williamsburg. The remained in Williamsburg until moving to Cedar Rapids in 1959. They relocated to Huntington Beach, California in 1966. Isola returned to Williamsburg in 1975. She became a resident of Evergreen Estates in Cedar Rapids in 1996 and has lived at the Heritage Rehabilitation and Nursing Center the past year. She spent her earlier years as a homemaker and in later years worked at Armstrong’s Department Store in Cedar Rapids and at the Broadway Store in California. Isola was a life long member of St .Paul’s United Methodist Church in Williamsburg and the United Methodist Women’s Society of which she served as president for seven years. She died on Wednesday, July 9, 2003 at St. Lukes Hospital in Cedar Rapids, after a brief illness, at the age of 98 years. Isola is survived by two sons: Keith Halverson and wife Shirley of Marion and Marvyn Halverson and wife Karen of Fountain Valley, California; four grandchildren: Peggy Broadie and husband Dick of Cedar Falls - Kevin Halverson and wife Barbara of Fullerton, California - Scott Halverson of Waukee and Kristi Halverson of Fountain Valley, California; and 4 great grandchildren: Chelsea, Courtney and Eric Halverson and Leah Broadie. Isola was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1970 and sixteen brothers and sisters. A memorial fund has been established for the St. Paul United Methodist Church building fund.

Chapman, Russell

South English - Russell Dean Chapman was born May 6, 1949 on a farm east of North English, the son of Clifford and Ada Robison Chapman. He graduated from English Valley High School in North English. Russ served in Vietnam for 4 years in the Air Force. He has lived several years in the Hill’s area, but most of his life in the South English area. Russ was united in marriage to Jean Klostermann on July 23, 1993 in Iowa City, Iowa. He has worked a number of jobs in his life with the last 18 years working for the Campus Shop at the University of Iowa. Russ enjoyed hunting, fishing, trap shooting, family cookouts, walking his dog and taking a drive in the country. He has been a active in the Hill’s fire department, South English Q.R.S., and was instrumental in the construction of the South English Park. Russ died Monday, July 7, 2003 at the V.A. Medical Center in Iowa City of Cancer at the age of 54 years. He is survived by his wife Jean; five brothers: James and wife Velda of Marion, Wayne and wife Sheila of Hills, Ronald and wife Sheila of Sioux City, Harold and wife Margaret of Kalona and Joe of South English; his father and mother in law: Ray & Rita Klostermann of Manchester; brothers in laws: Daniel Klostermann of San Francisco, California, Gary Klostermann and wife Sue, Dean Klostermann and wife Chris and Kevin Klostermann and wife Dawn all of Manchester; sister in laws: Linda Harris and husband David of Manchester, Lois Petlon and husband Bill of Strawberry Point and Karla Burkle and husband Mark of Dubuque; and many nieces, nephew and great nieces and nephews. Russ was preceded in death by his parents. Celebration on Life Service will be Thursday, July 10, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. in the Powell Funeral Home in North English. Burial will be at the South English cemetery . Rev. Michael Orthel will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 P.M. on Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers the memorials are for South English Q.R.S. or Keokuk County Conservation Board for Lake Belva - Deer project.

John F. Skipton was born June 6, 1945 in Washington, Iowa the son of Richard and Margaret (Davidson) Skipton. He graduated from Washington High School in 1963. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. John has lived in Washington; Crestline, California; and Wellman. He has worked at Oral B in Iowa City since 1997. He attended the Kalona Christian Fellowship Church. He enjoyed antique cars, woodworking, and was a Harley Davidson enthusiast. John died Saturday, July 5, 2003 near Keota, Iowa from injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident at the age of 58 years. John is survived by 2 daughters - Becky Skipton and Molly Skipton of Mentone, California; and a step - daughter Megan Skipton of Riverside, California. He was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial fund has been established for the Skipton Girls Education Fund.

Mary Martha Mayer Romoser, 87, died Thursday, July3, 2003 at Maplewood Manor in Keota after a brief illness. She was born November 18, 1915 east of Keota the daughter of Carl and Elsie Henderson Mayer. She attended rural school in Washington County. She later attended Keota High School and graduated with honors in 1932. Mary graduated from Parsons College with a degree in elementary education. She taught K - 8 at the 76 Township School. Mary married Marlin D. Romoser on October 1, 1939 at her parents home near Brighton. Together they had 4 children. Mary lived all of her life in the Keota area. She was a charter member of the OAO Club, an active member of the 76 Community Club and loved playing Pinochle. Mary was also a member of the United Methodist Women and the United Church of Faith. Mary is survived by three sons: Gary Romoser and Chris Darnell of Cedar Rapids; John Romoser of Ft. Meyers, Florida; Robert Romoser and wife Mary Beth of Keota; one son - in - law, Robert Freeberg of Keota. Mary is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 5 great - grand children: Andy Romoser and wife Dosha of Keota; Brett Romoser of Keota; Chad Romoser of Dallas, Texas; Jodi Swift and husband Randy of Wayland; Angie Janecek and husband Kevin of Washington; Shauna Smith and husband Kelly of Wheaton, Illinois; Aaron Freeberg of Des Moines, Iowa; Tyler, Matt, Kayla and Miranda Romoser of Keota; Cody Klobnock of Ft. Meyers, Florida; Andy Klobnock of Kansas City, Missouri; Sgt. Barry Romoser of Ft. Bragg, North Carolina; Madelyn Janecek of Washington, Iowa; Donavon and Shelby Swift and Jordan Ashton of Wayland, Iowa. Mary is also survived by one brother - in - law, John Romoser and wife Evelyn of Keota, and two nieces, Jeri Bullis of Niceville, Florida and Judy Norenberg of Biloxi, Mississippi. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Karla Freeberg, daughter - in - law, Connie Romoser, and one brother and sister - in - law, Richard and Helen Mayer. Services will be held at 10:30am Tuesday, July 8th at the United Church of Faith in Keota with Reverend Sallie Graves officiat8ing. Burial is at the Keota cemetery . Music will be provided by Gina Bennett, soloist, and Janie Westendorf, organist. Visitation will be Monday from 4pm to 8pm at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. Pallbearers are Andy Romoser, Brett Romoser, Chad Romoser, Barry Romoser, Tyler Romoser, Matthew Romoser, Aaron Freeberg, Kelly Smith, Kevin Janecek, Cody Klobnock, Andy Klobnock, and Jordan Ashton. Honorary pallbearers are Betty Stoutner, Loretta Stoutner, Maxine Carris, Dorothy Olsen, Lois Anderson, Ester Vincent, Mary Ellen Detweiller, Irene Baughman, Glee Holmes, Annetta Stoutner, Ruth Jenkins, Joyce McFadden, Arbie Reed, Bernice Dill, Claudine Irwin, and Lillian Kauffman. A memorial fund has been established for the Keota Elementary School Library and Hospice of Washington County. Powell Funeral Home in Keota is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth “Kenny” Lee Threlkeld was born August 19.1953 in Oskaloosa, Iowa the son of Melvyn and Velma (Cozart) Threlkeld. He lived in the Wellman Community most all of his life. Kenny had a Salvage Business and was a Townsend Crane Operator. He enjoyed being with friends and working with cars. Kenny died Monday, June 30, 2003 of a heart attack at his home. Kenny is survived by his mother Velma: a daughter - Heather Franken of Ankeny; two grandchildren - Sydney Jean and Libby Anne Franken; two brothers - Danny Threlkeld of Eloy, Arizona, Richard Threlkeld of Iowa City, Iowa; 3 sisters - Laurie Clayton of North English, Iowa, Barbara Threlkeld of Iowa City, Virginia Threlkeld - Larsen of North English; a special friend - Cheryl Overton; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Melvyn.
In lieu of flowers a general memorial fund has been established.

Williamson, Laurence "L. E."

SIGOURNEY - Laurence “L. E.” Williamson, age 89, of Sigourney, died Saturday, June 28, 2003, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City from complications of a stroke. Laurence was born November 9, 1913 in Sigourney, Iowa, to Clyde and Bertha (Mereness) Williamson. He graduated from Sigourney High School in 1931 and attended business college in Des Moines. On June 1, 1939 Laurence was united in marriage to Lillian Kubik at her parents’ home in Black Hawk County by Rev. Leo Potter. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the 87th Infantry Division, where he was involved in the Battle of the Bulge. A purple heart and bronze service star were awarded him for his courageous service. A lifelong Sigourney resident, Laurence owned and operated Century Motors from 1946 until 1985. He also was involved with a Pontiac dealership, implement business, laundromat and insurance company. Laurence was an active member of the Sigourney Christian Church, Webb Lodge # 182 A.F. & A.M., Kaaba Shrine, O.E.S., I.O.O.F., Sigourney Chamber of Commerce, SADC, Iowa Automobile Dealers Association, serving as National Director, American Legion and V.F.W. He was also active with SEIDA, the Senior Citizens’ Agency Board, served as City Treasurer for 14 years and was on the Sigourney school board for 12 years, serving as President. Laurence was a music lover, participating in many vocal and instrumental groups throughout the years. Survivors include his wife: Lillian of Sigourney; two daughters: Marcia Nestler and husband Ken of Eldridge and Amy Scudder and husband Jim of Fenton, Missouri; four grandchildren: Craig and Renee Nestler and Jeffrey and Andrew Scudder and one sister: Ruth Mosier of Harrisonburg, Virginia. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother: Cecil Mereness Williamson. Funeral services are set for 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 1, 2003, at the Sigourney Christian Church with Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be at Sixteen cemetery near Thornburg with military honors by the American Legion Post # 19 and Lacey Kerr V.F.W. Post #2308. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Monday, June 30, 2003, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. There will be a Masonic Service at 7:00 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Sigourney Public Library Fund or the church of your choice. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.

Mildred Esther Axmear was born December 23, 1939 in Iowa City, Iowa the daughter of Edward and Winifred Zuber Tanke. She graduated from Marengo High School as Salutatorian of her class. Mildred was united in marriage to Norman Axmear on June 5, 1957 in Marengo. She has lived in the North English Community most of her life. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Millersburg and later transferred her membership to the North English United Methodist Church. Mildred was very active in her church, especially with children and being a Sunday School teacher. She was currently president of U.M.W. and had recently completed study to become a Lay Leader of the United Methodist Church. She especially appreciated gardening. Mildred died on Friday, June 27, 2003 at the Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo, Iowa, after an apparent heart attack at the age of 63 years. Mildred is survived by her husband Norman; two sons: Duane Axmear of Sigourney and David Axmear and wife Lisa of North English; three grandchildren: Joseph, Lindsay and Aimee Axmear. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter Laura, an infant son Ronald and a brother Richard Tanke. A General Memorial Fund has been set up.

Hoppe, LeRoy
June 07, 1941 - June 26, 2003
North English, Iowa
North English - LeRoy Francis Hoppe was born June 7, 1941 in a Johnson County home behind East Amana, Iowa, the son of John and Margaret Sponer Hoppe. He graduated from Amana High School in 1961. LeRoy worked at hay mounts during the summers while he was growing up. He later worked at the Amana Meat Shop for 36 years. When delivering meat, LeRoy went over and above the call of duty, he helped the owners of restaurants put the meat away and took time to help individual customers with special orders. In January of 1977 during jury duty, he met a wonderful woman named Ruth Wright. Even though the person on trial wasn’t too happy with the out come, Ruth and LeRoy became very happy! By July, they were engaged, and married on April 15, 1978 at the North English Christian Church. When LeRoy met “Sweet Sue” the clown in Ruth’s house, he wasn’t sure exactly what was happening! They took a trip to a clown convention in Chicago a few years after they were married . The couple moved to the North English area in the 1980's. LeRoy had a heart of gold, and earned the title of Jaycee of the Year Award. His favorite spot was Hawkeye Downs in Cedar Rapids watching the race cars and going to the Cedar Rapids Reds baseball games. He attend Pulmonary Rehab. for 5 years. In December of 2000 he became a resident of Parkview Manor in Wellman. This last April 6th the couple celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary at the Ox Yoke Inn on the Interstate - 80. LeRoy died Thursday, June 26, 2003 at Parkview Manor in Wellman of Cancer at the age of 62 years. He is survived by his wife Ruth “Sweet Sue” of North English; a brother, Ray Hoppe of Minnesota; a sister, Hazel Guehrn of Amana; and special friends he considered as sister and brother: Terry Zahradnik of Cedar Rapids and Galen Ludvicek of Swisher. LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, June 28, 2003 at 2:00 P.M. in the North English Christian Church. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion cemetery near Millersburg. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 P.M. Friday, June 27, 2003 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English.

George T. Lawrence was born February 8, 1922 in Moberly, Missouri the son of Joe and Millie (Asbury) Lawrence. He attended school in Moberly. On January 20, 1941 he was united in marriage to Gladys Ward in Huntsville, Missouri. They have lived in northern Keokuk County for the last 52 years, where he farmed and was a heavy equipment operator. H was a member of the Christian Church in Kinross. George enjoyed horses and ponies and was collector of many things especially model trains and cars. George died on Wednesday, June 25, 2003 at his home in rural Keota following a long illness at the age of 81 years. George is survived by his wife Gladys of Keota; 2 sons - Tom Lawrence and wife Sandra of Solon; Jerry Lawrence and wife Linda of Downey; a daughter - Julie Lawrence of Riverside; a daughter - in - law Connie Alt of Cedar Rapids; and 5 granddaughters - Patricia, Jessica, Melia, Andie, and Kate. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Jack, and 4 brothers - Leon, Ray, Verdell and Clydis.
A General Memorial Fund has been established.

Long, Mary A.

SIGOURNEY - Mary A. Long, age 94, of Sigourney, died Tuesday, June 24, 2003, at the Sigourney Care Center following a brief illness. Mary was born November 2, 1908, in rural Hedrick to Charles and Faith (Alexander) Erdman. She attended country school and graduated from Martinsburg High School. Mary earned her teaching certificate at State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught at Olin and country school in Keokuk County. On June 6, 1934 Mary married Errol Long in Montezuma. Following marriage the couple lived and farmed near Lancaster. Mary was a member of the Sigourney Christian Church, Christian Women’s Fellowship and the Lancaster Women’s Club and enjoyed visiting with family and friends. Survivors include her sister: Arlene Martin of Sigourney and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death her parents; husband: Errol in 1988 and a brother in infancy. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, June 28, 2003, at Sigourney Christian Church in Sigourney with the Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be at Pennington cemetery near Sigourney. Visitation will be from 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the church. Memorials may be directed to the Sigourney Christian Church. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.
