Tony Steward

Tony L. Steward, 75, of Burlington, died at 2:36 p.m. Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born Dec. 1, 1925, in Macon, Mo., he was the son of Harry Sr. and Emma Loft Steward. He married Betty A. Dressler on Dec. 3, 1947, in Fort Madison.
Mr. Steward was a graduate of Denmark (Iowa) High School and a World War II Marine Corps veteran. He served in the Fourth Division from December 1943 to May 1946, in the South Pacific and the Battle of Iwo Jima. He was a sales representative for Coppes Termite and Pest Control for 33 years, retiring in 2000. He also worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant for 13 1/2 years.

He was of the Protestant faith and a member of Moose Lodge 579, Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie 150, Loyal Moose Legion, Hend-Co Hills Country Club and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 10102.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, David Steward of Des Moines and Steven and Ronald Steward, both of Burlington; two daughters, Rebecca Fenton and Carolyn Van Order, both of Burlington; 13 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and five brothers.

Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. today in Lunning Chapel. Moose rites will be at 6:30 p.m., after which the family will receive friends until 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Steward will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in Lunning Chapel, with Pastor Terry Terrell officiating. Burial will be in Denmark Cemetery , with military rites conducted by VFW Posts 10102 and 9162.

A memorial has been established.

Wilda Bayne

Wilda Frances Bayne, 94, of Payson, Ariz., died at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, 2001.

Born June 14, 1906, in Macomb, Ill., she was the daughter of Judd and Bertha McCammon Blevins.
Since leaving Macomb, Mrs. Bayne lived in Burlington, Phoenix and Payson.

She was a faithful Christian and a long-time member of the Nazarene Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Lois L. Logan of Payson, Wilma Frances Der Avedisian of Sacramento, Calif., Nellie M. Lynn of Glendale, Ariz., and Linda L. Logan of Payson; many grandchildren; great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three sons, three daughters, three brothers and one sister.

The private funeral service for Mrs. Bayne was May 9 in Oakwood Cemetery.

Clugston-Tibbitts Funeral Home in Macomb was in charge of arrangements.

Bernice Sliger

Bernice Sliger of Carthage, Ill., died of natural causes at 9:53 a.m. Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at Montebello Manor Nursing Home in Hamilton, Ill.

She donated her body to science. There will be no visitation or memorial service.
Neiser-Printy Funeral Home of Carthage is in charge of arrangements.

Floyd Helphrey

Floyd I. Helphrey, 81, of Mount Pleasant, died at 5:30 a.m. Saturday, June 16, 2001, at his home.

Born May 31, 1920, near Mount Union, he was the son of Glen and Mary Krieger Hel-phrey. On Feb. 21, 1948, he married Wanda Crock-er in Mount Union.
Mr. Hel-phrey was a lifelong farm-er and inventor, retiring from farming in 1993. He also worked for Winfield Agri Builders from 1964 to 1985.

He attended Center Country School and was a graduate of Yarmouth High School. He was a member of First United Meth-odist Church in Mount Pleasant, served on the New London elevator board for six years and was a member of American Legion 58 since 1948. He was a World War II Navy veteran. He joined the Navy in 1942 and was in the aviation branch at squadron 15A, Kingsville, Texas, where he was a line chief. He attended hydraulic school in Chicago and was transferred overseas to C.A.S.U. 31 Pacific Fleet, where he was an aviation machinists mate: hydraulic specialist. He repaired aircraft that had been damaged at sea. He was discharged Dec. 25, 1945.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Marvin Helphrey of San Diego and Melvin Helphrey of Asheville, N.C.; one daughter, Gayle McDonald of South Riding, Va.; five grandchildren; and one brother, Wendell Helphrey of Winfield.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.

Visitation will begin after noon Monday at Elliott Chapel in New London, where the family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mr. Helphrey will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Revs. Edward Peterson and Kiboko Kiboko officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by American Legion 58 will be in Trinity Cemetery in Mount Union.

Memorials have been established for Crossroads Hospice, First United Methodist Church and Trinity Cemetery.

James Krekel

James R. Krekel, age 72, of Burlington, passed away at 11:25 PM Friday, June 15, 2001, at the Great River Medical Center in West Bur-lington of leukemia.

Born May 31, 1929, in Burlington, he was the son of Wil-liam E. and Lena R. Messmer Krekel. He married Mary Ann Champagne on July 25, 1953, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
Mr. Krekel was a 1946 graduate of Burlington High School.

He served in the U.S. Army, stationed in Germany during the Korean Conflict.

He was a printer at the Hawkeye Newspaper for 37 years, retiring in 1991.

He was a lifetime member of St. John the Baptist Cath-olic Church.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council #568, a 40-year member of Typographical Union International, and the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.

He volunteered at North Hill and Central Ave. Elementary Schools. He enjoyed cooking, reading, playing cards, and loved spending time with his family and especially his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ann; two sons, Tom (Sue) Krekel of Des Moines and Dan (Ronda) Krekel of Blue Springs, MO; four daughters, Laurie (Paul) Lata of Marinette, WI, Linda (Gary) Messmore of La Grange Park, IL, Louise (Ken) Lewis of Kansas City, KS, Anne (Brian) Mitchell of Burlington; 13 grandchildren, Natalie, Andy, and Owen Krekel; Benjamin, Brittany, and Brandon Krekel; Sarah, Katie, and Alex Mess-more; Kurt and Kelly Lewis; Amanda and Scott Mitchell; two brothers, William Krekel of Sheboygan, WI, and Raymond Krekel of Pleasanton, CA; two sisters, Helen Krogmeier of Burlington and Mary Coyne of St. Joseph, MO; and 17 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Paul, and two infant twin grandchildren, Albert and Louis Krekel.

Friends may call after 8:00 AM Monday at the Hass Funeral Home, where a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 3:00 PM. The family will receive friends after a 7:00 PM Christian Wake Service until 9:00 PM Monday evening.

The Mass of the Resurrection for Mr. Krekel will be 10:00 AM Tuesday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Rev. Father Patrick J. Hilgendorf will be the Celebrant. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. Interment will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery.

Memorials have been established to the Helen K. Rossi volunteer guest house at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City and St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Ella Bryant

Ella J. Bryant, 90, of River Hills Village in Keokuk, formerly of Alexandria, Mo., died Sunday evening, July 15, 2001, at River Hills Village. Arrangements are pending at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk.

Katherine Allen

Katherine Allen, 79, of Burlington, died at 9:54 p.m. Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.

Born July 15, 1921, in New Albany, Miss., she was the daughter of Ollie and Cora Foote Barnes. She married Bernard Allen in 1940, in Fort Madison. He died in 1987.
Mrs. Allen worked at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant, Sickels Cleaners and Hotel Burlington.

She was a member of Greater Hope Baptist Church and Union Baptist Church, was past president of the Missionary Society and served as an usher.

Survivors include one daughter, Vicki Gipson of Burlington; one son, Gene James of Burlington; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great- grandchildren; one sister, Gladys Lewis of Burlington; her special friend, Clifford Gipson of Burlington; her caregiver, Catherine Johnson of Burlington; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter and one son.

Friends may call after 1 p.m. Thursday in Prugh's Chapel. There will be no family visitation.

The funeral for Mrs. Allen will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Prugh's Chapel, with Pastor Lawrence Manson officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.

A memorial has been established.

Katheryn Ray

Katheryn Wilkins Ray, 80, of 507 Avenue C, Fort Madison, died at 4:30 a.m. Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Clearview Nursing Home in Mount Ayr.

Born Aug. 9, 1920, in Princeton, Minn., she was the daughter of Walter and Anna Otten Wilkins. She married Sherburne Leslie Ray on Dec. 31, 1957, in Boston, Mass. He died Feb. 21, 1985.
Mrs. Ray lived in Fort Madison since December 1965. She worked as a home health aide for Lee County Health Department, retiring after 20 years of service.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Fort Madison, Elsie Paul Circle at Kings Daughters and Sons and the American Baptist Women's Ministries Circle of her church.

Survivors include two sons, Walter Dean Ray of St. Paul, Minn., and Donald Arche Ray of Maloy; one brother, George Wilkins of Foreston, Minn.; two sisters, Wilma Mickelson of Cambridge, Minn., and Dorothy Erickson of St. Paul, Minn.; one stepbrother, Maurice "Bud" Peelgren of California; one stepsister, Mavis Branch of Franklin, Va.; two grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Barr Memorial Chapel in Fort Madison, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Ray will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Fort Madison, with the Rev. Tom Sandum officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery in Fort Madison.

A memorial has been established for her church. Contributions may be made at the church or the funeral home.

Lawrence Miller

Lawrence A. Miller, 66, of Monmouth, Ill., died at 3:33 p.m. Sunday, July 15, 2001, at LaMoine Christian Nursing Home in Roseville, Ill.

Born March 17, 1935, in Monmouth, Ill., he was the son fo Lawrence A. and Edith Jewell Kyle Miller. He married Judy Ann Glenn on June 2, 1958, in Quincy, Ill.
Mr. Miller attended Monmouth public schools, Texas A & M at Brownsville and the University of Illinois. He began farming after his schooling and was a producer of Berkshire hogs and suffolk sheep. For 20 years he was a telemarketer for Equity Livestock Co-op of Baraboo, Wis.

He was on the Founders Board of the Test Station for Western Illinois University and was a founder of the Ram Test. He was named Outstanding Young Farmer in 1971, and was past president of Warren County Pork Producers and Illinois Lamb and Wool Producers. He was a board member of the National Sheep Producers Council and served on its Lamb and Wool Committee. He was a member of the National Meat Board, was active in livestock judging and was well-known as a judging team consultant at Black Hawk College, Carl Sandburg College, WIU and ISU. He was an instructor for the Illinois Extension Annual Sheering School. He judged many state, county and local 4-H livestock shows. He was particularly interested in educating area youth about livestock production. He was interested in sports and played softball and coached Sheriff's League. He was a member of WIU Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kyle Miller of North Miami Beach, Fla., and Craig L. Miller of Monmouth; two granddaughters; one sister, Linda Bristow of Sun City West, Ariz.; two brothers, Tom Miller of Dundee, Ill., and Steve Miller of Sellersburg, Ind.; and several nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Friends may call today and Wednesday at Turnbull Funeral Home in Monmouth, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today.

The funeral for Mr. Miller will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Janet Roy officiating. The body will be cremated after the service.

Memorials have been established for C-Wing at Community Medical Center in Monmouth and LaMoine Christian Nursing Home.

Luella James

Luella A. James, 93, of River Hills Village in Keokuk, died at 5:25 a.m. Monday, July 16, 2001, at River Hills Village.

Born May 18, 1908, in Louisville, Ky., she was the daughter of John R. and Rose Belle Johnson Minyard Lorden. She married Lorin Varner. She later married Charles James.
Mrs. James moved to Keokuk as a young child and lived the remainder of her life there, except for a few years when she lived in Idaho. She worked at Purity Oats, the Keokuk Pickle Factory, Drydens Rubber and St. Luke's Nursing Home.

She was a member of Crossview Fellowship Church and the Dorcas Club. After retiring, she became very active in senior citizens' activities. She loved traveling and being with her family.

Survivors include three daughters, Virginia M. Rose of Keokuk, Mary R. Davison of San Dimas, Calif., and Sara J. Varner of Keokuk; two sons, Kenneth E. Varner of Comanche and Eugene E. Varner of Sturgen, Mo.; 22 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 15 great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, three sisters, two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Thursday at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. James will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Terry Lovell officiating. Burial will be in Hickory Grove Cemetery , north of Keokuk.

Mary Stevens

Mary Jane Stevens, 74, of LaHarpe, Ill., died at 10:23 a.m. Sunday, July 15, 2001, at Blessing Hospital in Quincy, Ill.

Born Oct. 27, 1926, in LaHarpe, Ill., she was the daughter of Walter and Olive Wade Boyd. She married Don Stevens on April 27, 1945, in LaHarpe, Ill.
Early in life, Mrs. Stevens worked as a secretary in Springfield, Ill., and San Diego, Calif. She later worked at the State Bank of LaHarpe for 19 years.

She served as secretary for the Girl Scouts Two Rivers Council and was post officer of the Home Extension. She was a member of LaHarpe Union Church, where she served as clerk on the church council and office secretary for the Women's Fellowship. She also was a member of the Happy Helpers Club and Blandinsville Order of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Todd Stevens of LaHarpe and Kevin Stevens of Ocean Springs, Miss.; one daughter, Sheila Clover of Lebanon, Ind.; three brothers, Clifford Boyd of San Diego, Calif., and Glen and Gerald Boyd, both of LaHarpe; two sisters, Joyce Tracer of Manhattan, Ill., and Carol Allen of Tempe, Ariz.; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

The funeral for Mrs. Stevens will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial will be in LaHarpe Cemetery.

Memorials have been established for her church and LaHarpe Senior Citizens.
