SIGOURNEY - Leona M. Heisdorffer, age 101, of Sigourney, died Monday, June 23, 2003, at the Manor House Care Center in Sigourney following a brief illness. Leona was born March 20, 1902, in Iowa County, to Henry and Ella (Hoppe) Kanke. On October 3, 1921, she married Peter P. Heisdorffer. Following marriage the couple lived and farmed in Keokuk County. Peter passed away in March of 1959. In 1962 Leona moved to Sigourney. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney and the Altar and Rosary Society. Leona enjoyed quilting at the Keokuk County Historical Society, playing Bingo and gardening. Survivors include two daughters: Pauline Fritchen Street of Sigourney and Kathleen Conklin of Jackson, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 16 great great grandchildren; one brother: Lester Kanke of Newton; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Peter; two sons: Richard and Robert; one great grandson: Timothy Fritchen; three brothers: Carl, Glenn and Richard and four sisters: Nora, Florence, Pearl and Luella. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 26, 2003, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Catholic cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, 2003, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. There will be a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be directed to St. Mary Catholic Church, the Keokuk County Historical Society or the Sigourney Senior Center. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

Minerva Anna Schmidt was born January 1, 1921 in York Township of Iowa County, Iowa the daughter of Aldolph H. and Ida Alina Newkirk Hudepohl. She was baptized on January 30, 1921 at Immanuel Lutheran Church, rural Williamsburg. She attended Immanuel Lutheran School and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church by Rev. Albert Bostelmann on March 25, 1934. Minerva was united in marriage to Oren G. Schmidt on March 12, 1941 at Immanuel Lutheran Church. She was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening, cooking and playing cards. She worked many years as a waitress in Amana area restaurants and helped serve lunch at the Lutheran Interparish School. Minerva was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church of rural Homestead and a member of the Ladies Aid. She touched the lives of many people by visiting and helping others and will be missed by all who knew her. She truly enjoyed being a Great Oma to her great - grandson Cody, who loved her very much. Minerva died on Thursday, June 19, 2003 at Marengo Memorial Hospital in Marengo after a sudden illness at the age of 82 years. She is survived by her husband Oren; a son Stanley Schmidt and wife Karen of Homestead; a granddaughter Kristin Schmidt - Solberg and husband Jason of Middle Amana; a great grandson Cody; two sisters: Alice Rudin of Marengo and Lucille Madoerin - Bell and husband Dale of Williamsburg and a number of nieces and nephews. Minerva was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son Jerry Dean, a brother Reno Hudehohl and a sister Irma Wardenburg.

Martin, Emerson
June 21, 1912 - June 12, 2003
Wellman, IA
Emerson Glen Martin was born on June 21, 1912 in Iowa County, near Wellman, IA a son of Edward and Barbara Yoder Martin. He grew up on a farm and attended Greene Center Country School. On August 10, 1934 he married Alta Rosmond Singleton in Iowa City. They farmed north of Wellman until moving into town in 1970. He retired in 1984 and enjoyed playing cards and fishing. Emerson was a member of the Franklin United Methodist Church. Alta preceded him in death in October 1996. He was a resident of Parkview Manor in Wellman before moving to the English Valley Care Center in North English in October 2001. Emerson died following a sudden illness at the English Valley Care Center on Thursday, June 12, 2003. He lived 90 years, 11 months and 22 days. He is survived by a son Edward Martin and his wife Lola of North English; a daughter Barbara Troyer and husband Lynn of Wellman; 6 grandchildren: Laurie Johnson, Carmen Fish, Todd Troyer, Desa Prebyl, Karri Fisher and Lara Troyer; 11 great grandchildren; two brothers: Russell Martin of Parnell, IA and Robert Martin of Grand Island, NE; and a sister: Amy White of Wellman, IA. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Alta, grandchildren Cole D. Martin and Kayleen R. Martin, sister Lula Brenneman and brothers William and Charles Martin. Funeral services will be held at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 16, 2003 with Rev. Mark Jagnow officiating. Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, June15, 2003 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. Burial will be in the McArtor cemetery , rural Wellman, IA. Memorials may be made to the Franklin United Methodist Church.

Kempf, Zene

KEOTA - Zene M. Kempf, 83 years old, of Prescott, AZ, formerly of Keota, went home to be with his Lord June 10, 2003. He died in Prescott, AZ, of lung cancer. Zene was born January 24, 1920 in rural Kalona, Iowa to Milo M. & Delilah Miller Kempf. Easter Sunday 1946 he married Bonny West. Zene, wife Bonny and two sons H. Zene and Terry Rex moved to Prescott in July 1958. Zene M. was an elder in The First Christian Church in Washington, Iowa and Pasadena, California and a charter member of the church here in Prescott. He was a 40 year member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Lodge 319, a 25 year member of the Local Civil Air Patrol and a 20 year member of the Yavapai Jeep Posse. In the early 60's Zene worked for Yavapai Ready Mix Concrete Co. doing mechanical work on equipment and delivering concrete. Later he worked for the Prescott Unified School District as the bus mechanic and maintaining equipment. Zene enjoyed running the movie projectors at the Elks, Drive - In, and Marina Theaters. Zene loved working on engines and had a natural talent for fixing things. Zene had many hobbies, among them developing B&W film was like magic to him. When his sons were younger he enjoyed being a Cub Scout Master and later in Boy Scouts he helped with numerous projects, hikes, and campouts. After retirement he looked after two local car washes in Prescott. He is survived by his wife Bonnie of Prescott, sons H. Zene Kempf of Washington and Terry R. Kempf of Prescott, AZ. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday, June 16, 2003 in the Keota cemetery in Keota, Iowa. Rev. Charles Smith will officiate. There will be no visitation. Powell Funeral Home, Keota, is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be sent to: California Christian Home, 8417 Mission Dr., Rosemead, CA. 91770 - 1192

Ida Alice Herrick was born on March 6, 1919 near North English, IA, a daughter of William and Bessie Simmons Moffit. She attended country school near North English and on September 7, 1940 married Dale B. Herrick in Denver, IA. They farmed 14 years near Webster, IA before moving to Cedar Rapids. Ida worked as a cook for a nursing home and many years at Jefferson High School in Cedar Rapids.. She retired in 1978. She enjoyed gardening and loved being with her family and grandchildren. Dale preceded her in death in August 1990. Ida died following a brief Illness on Thursday, June 5, 2003 in her home. She lived 84 years, 2 months and 30 days. She is survived by a son Ronald Herrick of Garland, TX; 3 daughters: Linda Koppes & husband Dick of Cascade, IA; Sharon Jeffries and companion David Kemper of Marion, IA; Marcia Baker and husband Michael of Canyon, TX; 7 grandchildren: Rich Koppes, Becky Pins, Doug Koppes, Kris Jeffries, Renae Baker, Jason Herrick and Travis Herrick; 4 great grandchildren; 2 brothers Wayne Moffit of North English, IA and Harold Moffit of Central City, IA; 5 sisters: Velda Schauf of Wellman, IA; Arlene Swenson of Yuba City, CA; Mildred Walters and Ruth Claypool both of Iowa City, IA and Ruby Mayes of St. Louis, MO. Ida was preceded in death by her parents, husband Dale, sisters Emmagene Meyers and Donna Perrin and a brother Dean Moffit.

KEOTA - Anna Bernadette Stites, age 91, of Johnson City, Tennessee, formerly of Keota, died Wednesday, June 4, 2003, in the Johnson City Medical Center. Anna was born January 2, 1912 in Keswick, Iowa to James Joseph and Bertha Ann (Nilles) Greene. In 1940 she married Carl Stites in Keswick. The couple lived in Keota following marriage where they owned and operated a flower shop and greenhouse. Anna also worked as a beautician. Anna moved to Johnson City, Tennessee in 2001 to live with her daughter, Ellen. She was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota and the Altar and Rosary Survivors include three daughters, Virginia Green of Albuquerque, NM, Bertha Murphy of Pittsburgh, PA, and Ellen Stites of Johnson City, Tennessee; four grandchildren; three great - grandchildren; three sisters, Margaret Greene of Des Moines, Ellen Selk of Kansas City, Missouri, and Kathleen Strohman of Des Moines; three brothers, John Greene of Keswick, Frank Greene of Keswick, and Richard Greene of Williamsport, Pennsylvania; 47 nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl Stites, two sisters and three brothers. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 9, 2003, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota, with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary Catholic cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Sunday, June 8, 2003, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be an Altar and Rosary Society Rosary at 3:00 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

SIGOURNEY - Dorothy L. Hahn, age 91, of Sigourney, died Monday, June 2, 2003, at her daughter’s home in Sigourney following a brief illness. Dorothy was born July 13, 1911, in Webster, Iowa, to Ora and Ethel (Robison) Hervey and graduated from South English High School. On July 3, 1931, she married Byron E. Hahn in Davenport. The couple made their home in South English, where Dorothy was a homemaker. She also was employed in the housekeeping department at Manor House Care Center in Sigourney for 17 years. Dorothy moved to Sigourney in 1983, and had been living in her daughter Linda’s home since August of 2002. She was an active member of the South English Union Church, serving in many capacities, and enjoyed family get - togethers, gardening, sewing and doing things for others. Survivors include three daughters: Marie Snakenberg and husband Mel of Sigourney, Mary Ann Trimpe and husband Lloyd of South Amana and Linda Gilliland of Sigourney; one son: Marvin Hahn and wife Joyce of Sigourney; 23 grandchildren; 32 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Byron in 1978; two sons: Wayne and Earl; one great grandson and two brothers in infancy: Eldon and Wilmer. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, June 5, 2003, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, with Rev. Paul Davidson officiating. Burial will be at South English cemetery near South English. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 4, 2003, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where the family will be present from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established. Grimm, Betty

Millersburg Dateline Betty Jane Grimm was born on April 14, 1924 in Rose Hill, Iowa. She was the daughter of Harry O. (Doc) and Zelpha Mae Phillips Fowler. She attended school in Delta, graduating from Delta High School and attended William Penn College for two years. Betty taught in one - room country schools in the Millersburg and Oskaloosa areas. She also worked in Washington D.C. during World War II as a stenographer, sometimes assisting Eleanor Roosevelt. She was united in marriage to Dean Russell Grimm on June 1, 1950 in Deep River, Iowa. They lived in Mahaska and Iowa counties after their marriage. Betty was an active member of Community Church, Deep River, Iowa and participated in Parent/Teacher Associations. She was a long - time supporter and volunteer at East Iowa Bible Camp in many different capacities. She became a resident of the Williamsburg Care Center in April of 2003. Betty died following a short illness on Friday, May 30, 2003. She lived 79 years, 1 month and 16 days. She is survived by four sons: Donald and Mary Grimm of Williamsburg, Iowa; Norman and Marlys Grimm of Sioux Center, Iowa; Brian and Deborah Grimm of Williamsburg, Iowa; and David and Deborah Grimm of Williamsburg, Iowa. Also surviving are a sister Marilyn Kolosik and husband Vance of Springville, Iowa, a brother James Fowler and wife Faye of Dallas, Georgia; and 11 grandchildren, 1 great - grandchild, and a host of nieces and nephews. Betty was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brothers Ivan and Jerrold Fowler, infant brothers Gene and Dean Fowler, and an infant daughter Jane Ann. Visitation will be at the Powell Funeral Home, North English, Iowa from 2:00 - 7:00 P.M., Sunday, June 1. Funeral service and burial will be at 2:00 P.M., Monday, June 2 at Community Church, Deep River, Iowa. Memorial contributions may be made to the Community Church Camper's Fund.

Cedric E. Ulin was born Saturday May 7, 1921 in Wellman, Iowa the son of Ottis and Hazel (Matthes) Ulin. He graduated from Wellman High School in 1939and was in the U. S. Navy in WWII from January of 1942 to November of 1947. On February 14,1950 he was united in marriage to Maxine Adams in the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. She died on September 18,1968. He married Fairl Dee Kelley April 16, 1977 in Wellman, Iowa. Cedric has lived all of the life in the Wellman Community where he owned and operated the Ulin Barbershop for 47 years along with Martina's Dry Cleaners and Laundromat until retiring in August 1998. He was a 50 year member of the Masonic Lodge, a 50 year member of the American Legion, formerly belonged to the Wellman Lions and Rotary Clubs, and served on the Wellman City Council. Cedric died on Wednesday, May 21, 2003 in Iowa City following a extended illness at the age of 82 years. Cedric is survived by his wife Fairl Dee Ulin of Wellman; two daughters: Marcy DeFrance and husband Jeff (Hank) of Iowa City, Iowa, Tina Hershberger, and husband Clayton of Kalona, Iowa; two step daughters: Donna Nolan of Wellman, Margie Sweeting and husband Jerry of Riverside, Iowa; two brothers: Ivan Ulin of Wellman, Iowa, Ronnie Ulin of Marshalltown, Iowa; 14 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his wife Maxine. Graveside Memorial Services with Military Honors will be held at 3:00 pm, Friday, May 23 at the Wellman cemetery with Pastor Mike Orthel officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 pm on Thursday at the Powell Funeral Home in Wellman. Memorial fund is for the Wellman Fire Department and the Wellman Ambulance.

Nickolas Charles Peck was born November 29, 1980 in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Art and Dana Hahn Peck. He graduated from Mid - Prairie High School in 1999. Nick was a junior at the University of Iowa in the College of Business until his health prevented him from continuing. Nick’s joy was spending time with his devoted fiancee, Kelly and their nieces and nephews. He also loved the outdoors, spending as much time as he could hunting and fishing with his brothers. He enjoyed nature drives looking for deer and was an avid Hawkeye football fan. He died Tuesday, May 20, 2003 in his home in Iowa City from complications of osteosarcoma at the age of 22 years. Nick is survived by his parents, his fiancee Kelly Bontrager of Iowa City, brothers: Ben and wife Casey Peck of Keota, Jeremy and wife Tina Peck of Wellman and Micah Peck and special friend Kally Boehmer both of Iowa City; a niece Paige and nephew Rex of Wellman. He is also survived by Kelly’s parents: Duane and Alana Bontrager of Kalona, and her four sisters: Sheila Ouverson, husband Dan, sons Alan and Thomas of Kalona, Lisa Facinelli and husband Kevin of Mt. Vernon, Leah Bontrager of Iowa City and Jamie Swartzendruber and husband Aaron of Colorado; a brother: Todd Bontrager, wife Lisa and daughter Josie Jo of Wall Lake. Grandmother Opal Hahn of Keota. Nick relied on a special care giver, Mary Schlapkohl, Nurse Practitioner, of Iowa City, who offered constant support and assistance in his six year illness. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Bernard Hahn, Benedict and Dorothy Peck.
In Lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Adella "Peg" M. Boone was born November 11, 1921 in Williamsburg, Iowa the daughter of Walter and Florence (Dane) Evans. Her mother married Wilbur Wasson when Peg was 3 years old and she was raised by Florence and Wilbur. She attended Wellman High School. On June 4, 1945 she was united in marriage to Marvin Boone in Wellman. Peg has lived most all of her life in the Wellman community where she was a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Wellman. Peg went to be with the Lord on Sunday, May 18, 2003 at the Parkview Manor in Wellman following a brief illness at the age of 81 years. Peg is survived by 2 sons - Allan "Butch" Boone and wife Mary of Wellman; Ole Boone of Wellman; 2 daughters - Connie McKray and husband Jim of Riverside; Paula Lampe and husband Dale of Keota; 12 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; 2 brothers - Wayne Wasson of Wellman; Junior Wasson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; and a sister - in - law Martha Evans of Wellman. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in July of 1995; a daughter Jackie Johnston; a granddaughter; and 3 brothers - Walter Evans, Carl Evans and Eugene Wasson.
A Memorial Fund has been establixhed for the First Baptist Church.
