KEOTA - Naomi D. Greiner, age 90, of Keota, died Monday, December 1, 2003, at the Maplewood Manor in Keota, following a brief illness. Naomi was born January 13, 1913, in Keokuk County, near Harper, the daughter of Joseph and Ethel (Striegel) Linnenkamp. She graduated from St. Elizabeth’s High School in Harper and attended State Teacher’s College at Cedar Falls, Iowa. Naomi taught several years in country schools of Keokuk County. On August 20, 1935, she was united in marriage to Frank W. Greiner at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Harper, Iowa. They farmed near Keota until 1978 when they moved into Keota. Naomi was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church, St. Mary’s Altar and Rosary Society, St. Mary’s Reading Circle and several card clubs. She enjoyed keeping up on family events, cooking, gardening, reading and playing cards. Survivors include two daughters: Norma Stutzman and husband Leroy of Washington, Joy Schachel and husband Larry of Rock Island, Illinois; three sons: Dennis and wife Lois of Keota, Jerry and wife Lois Jean of Washington, Roger and wife Patricia of West Chester, one son - in - law: Don Gunderson of Dike; 21 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; two step grandsons; four step great grandchildren and one special niece: Leticia Pitt of Knoxville, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mike Striegel. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Frank in 1986, daughter: Mary Jo Gunderson in 1999; one sister: Grace Horras; one brother: Francis Linnenkamp; uncle Mike Striegel, who was raised by her parents as a brother; son - in - law: William Redlinger and three great grandsons. She was the last of her family. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 4, 2003, at the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary cemetery in Keota. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be an Altar and Rosary Society Rosary at 3:00 p.m. and a Prayer Sevice at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Memorials are preferred to Maplewood Manor or Hospice of Washington County. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.

Williamsburg - John James McCoy was born April 13, 1918 in Albia, Iowa, the son of James Henry and Mary Johnson McCoy. He attended school in the Albia area. He moved to the Williamsburg area and worked at the Iowa County Home for a number of years. John was united in marriage to Norma Anna Huedepohl on May 14, 1954 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church parsonage near Williamsburg. John worked as an Administrator of the Guthrie County Home for 17 years, he also farmed for 7 years, until retiring in 1980. The couple moved to the Williamsburg area in 1992. In July of 2003 he became a resident of the Williamsburg Care Center. He was a member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg and enjoyed working with flowers. John died Sunday, November 23, 2003 at the Williamsburg Care Center after a long illness at the age of 85 years, 7 months and 10 days. He is survived by his wife Norma of Williamsburg, a niece June Nicolleto and a great niece Pauline Jacobsen both of Des Moines. John is preceded in death by his parents, a brother Orville McCoy; two sisters: Fannie Kent and Rose Klingensmith and two nephews. A Celebration of Life Service will be 10:30 A.M. Wednesday, November 26th, 2003 at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran cemetery . Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials are for St. Paul Lutheran Church or Williamsburg Care Center.

Paul Emanuel (E.M.) Yoder was born Thursday, March 16, 1916, in Vestaburg, Michigan, the son of John and Nancy (Hershey) Yoder. He was baptized in his youth at the Mount Pisgah Mennonite Church in Cherry Box, Missouri. Paul graduated from high school in Leonard, Missouri, and attended Hesston College. He grew up in rural Missouri and moved to rural Wellman in 1936. On June 6, 1946, he was united in marriage to Helen Slaubaugh at the West Union Mennonite Church in rural Parnell. Paul farmed in the Wellman and North English are from 1945 - 79. He was an ordained minister and served as Pastor of the Parnell Mennonite Church from 1954 - 79. After retiring in 1979, Paul and Helen went to Mennonite Voluntary Service in Brownsville and San Antonio, Texas, from 1980 - 84; and Quito, Ecuador, from 1987 - 88 before returning to Wellman. Paul volunteered at the Crowded Closet and worked many hours at the Crooked Creek Christian Camp. He was a member of the Wellman Mennonite Church. Paul died at the age of 87 years following a long illness on Thursday, November 20, 2003, at the Parkview Manor in Wellman. Paul is survived by his wife Helen of Wellman; two daughters - Kathleen Erteld and husband Roger of Moundridge, Kansas; Christine Falcon and husband Rafael of Goshen, Indiana; two sons - Phil C. Yoder of Kalona; Orie J. Yoder and wife Linda of Williamsburg; seven grandchildren - Sharon Entz, Wendy Erteld, Bryan Falcon, Brent Falcon, Elaine Yoder, Erica Yoder, Jesse Yoder; 2 great grandchildren - Rebecca Entz and David Entz; and two brothers - Jesse L. Yoder of Sarasota, Florida; and Vernon T. Yoder of Memphis, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters - Mary Hathaway, Barbara Nice; and two brothers - Daniel M. Yoder and Jonas S. Yoder.
A General Memorial Fund has been established.

Beilstein, Bradly

Williamsburg: Bradly Scott Beilstein was born October 20, 1976 in Marengo, Iowa, the son of Michael Beilstein and Dalene Welsh Roher. He graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1995. Bradly enjoyed being outside, fishing, spending time at grandpa’s cabin and riding his motorcycle. Spending time with his family was also a favorite past time. He was a Iowa Hawkeye football and wrestling fan and loved the Green Bay Packers. He has worked at Amana Refrigeration as a production worker for seven years and was a member of the Machinist Union. Bradly died suddenly on Sunday, November 16, 2003 near Williamsburg at the age of 27 years and 27 days. Bradly is survived by his father Michael Beilstein of Williamsburg; his mother Dalene Welsh Roher, of Williamsburg; two sisters: Jennifer Beilstein of Kihei Maui, Hawaii and Nicole Caskey of Williamsburg; a step sister Jessica Caskey of Williamsburg and his grandfather Dale Welsh of Williamsburg. He was preceded in death by his grandparents: Arlene Welsh and Robert & Lucille Beilstein. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday, November 20, 2003 at 10:00 A.M. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Rev. James Stewart will officiate. Burial is in the Pilot Grove cemetery near Williamsburg. Visitation will be from 4:00 pm to 8:00pm on Wednesday, November 19, 2003 at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home. Memorial are for the Williamsburg Wrestling Program.

Huedepohl, Lothar

Williamsburg - Lothar Martin Huedepohl was born June 6, 1910 in Hilton Township, Iowa County, near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of Herman W. and Anna Maas Huedepohl. He attended country school and in 1924 went to Concordia Teacher’s College in River Forest, Illinois. He graduated in June of 1930 and taught at a one room school for 2 years. Lother started farming during the depression in June of 1932. Lothar was united in marriage to Frieda Newkirk on June 21, 1936 in Williamsburg. To this unity they had three children: Barbara, Kenneth and Howard. She died in an accident January 24, 1965. He later married Olga Teggatz on March 9, 1968 at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. He moved off the farm in 1968 and retired from farming in 1988. Lothar died Saturday, November 8, 2003 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids after a brief illness at the age of 93 years. He is survived by a daughter Barbara Hunley and husband Joe of Post Falls, Idaho; two sons: Kenneth Huedepohl and wife Connie of Livermore, California and Howard Huedepohl and wife Linda of South Amana, Iowa. Two stepsons: Donald Teggatz and wife Shirley of Homestead, Ralph Teggatz and wife Lois of Waterloo; three stepdaughters: Nancy Van Dee and husband Ronnie of Oxford, Janice Goldsmith and husband Gordon of Seward, Nebraska and Kathy Stockman and husband Gerold of Oxford. He is preceded in death by his parents, wives Frieda and Olga; two brothers: Ernest and Edmund and three sisters: Clara Kluge, Edna Brockshus and Nora Huedepohl. Celebration of Life Service will be Friday, November 14, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. in the Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg. Rev. Richard Meyer will officiate. Burial is in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery . Visitation will be from 4 to 7PM Thursday at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Memorials are for Bethesda Lutheran Home or Immanuel Lutheran Church.

Williamsburg - Everette “Shorty” Schlesselman was born August 7, 1924 in Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of John and Emma Stohlmann Schlesselman. He was baptized October 5, 1924 and confirmed March 17, 1940 at St. Paul Lutheran Church. Shorty attended Pilot Grove School near Williamsburg and graduated from Williamsburg High School. He was united in marriage to Eileen Meyer on February 23, 1947 in Missouri. Shorty served in the Army during WWII. He lived in rural Iowa County all of his life, where he farmed until his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, along with farming. Shorty was also a life long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg, having served as an Elder, on the stewardship and a trustee. He was also a member of the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797. Shorty died Thursday, November 6, 2003 at his home near Williamsburg after a long illness at the age of 79 years. He is survived by his wife Eileen of Williamsburg; five sons: Allan Schlesselman and wife JoLinda, Robert Schlesselman and wife Dianne and Richard Schlesselman and wife Karmen all of Williamsburg, Donald Schlesselman and wife Karla of Sioux City and Harold Schlesselman and wife Jan of Fostoria, Ohio; three daughters: Joyce Lillis and husband Terry of Des Moines, Shirley Weis and husband Brian of Pine Island Minnesota and Marilyn Dolezal and husband Mark of Oxford. Seventeen grandchildren: James Schlesselman, Eric Schlesselman, Matthew Schlesselman, Dustin Schlesselman, Bradley Schlesselman, David Dolezal, Brian Lillis, Kodey Weis, Renee Lillis, Jennie Lillis, Anna Schlesselman, Katie Schlesselman, Michelle Schlesselman, Robin Schlesselman, Lori Schlesselman, Sarah Dolezal and Natalie Schlesselman; two step great grandchildren: Anna and Sarah. A brother John Schlesselman and wife Betty of Williamsburg. Shorty was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter Delores Schlesselman in 1963; two brothers: Orville and Dale; and two sisters: Florence Lortz and Lenora McCallister. Celebration of Life Service will be Sunday, November 9, 2003 at 3:00 P.M. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial is in the ST. Paul Lutheran cemetery . Visitation will be Saturday from 4:00pm to 8:00pm at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. There will be a VFW service at 7:00 pm Saturday evening. Visitation will also be on Sunday from 8:00am until 1:00pm at the funeral home where the family will be present from 10:00 am until 1:00 pm. Memorials are for the St. Paul Lutheran Church or the Iburg Poulson VFW Post #8797.

Williamsburg - Mary J. Hannon was born July 23, 1912 in Holbrook, Iowa, the daughter of Thomas and Martha Gallagher Hannon. She attended rural school. Mary worked for Winborn’s and Belland Plumbing and Heating as an office manager for both, for many years. She was a long time member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg, where she was active in the Altar and Rosary Society, Foresters and helped with the Salvation Army. Mary has been a resident at the English Valley Care Center in North English where she received excellent and quality care for 10 years. Mary died Thursday, November 6, 2003 at the English Valley Care Center in North English after a long illness at the age of 91 years. She is survived by a niece Sister Delores Hannon of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, five brothers: James, Joe, Charles, Clement and Bill; two sisters: Stella and Genevieve. A Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, November 8, 2003 at 10:30 in the St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Rev. Joseph Roost will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Michael’s cemetery in Holbrook. Visitation will be for 9:00 am until service time at the church. Memorials are for St. Mary’s Catholic Church or Sisters of Mercy.

KEOTA - John Harding Short, age 81, of Keota, died Saturday, November 1, 2003, at the Washington County Hospital in Washington, following a brief illness. John was born February 9, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Clyde and Martha (Harding) Short. He grew up in Des Moines and attended Des Moines Lincoln High School. A survivor of the attack on Pearl Harbor, John served in the United States Marine Corps during World War II where he attained the rank of Sergeant. On August 6, 1947 he married Velva Parker in Prairie Center, Iowa. John was a chef for the V.A. Hospital and Hotel Savory in Des Moines. In 1967 the couple moved to Keota, where the couple owned the Golden Buckle in Keota. John then worked at Modine’s in Washington, retiring in 1987. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church in Keota and the V.F.W. and enjoyed movies, woodworking and spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife: Velva Short of Keota; five children: Russell Short and wife Linda of Kingston, Washington, Karla Lucchesi and husband Dr. Richard of Lakewood, Washington, Holly Dowe and husband James of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, Joel Short and wife Roberta of North English and Janelle Short - Al Sharairi and husband Fakhri of Iowa City and 11 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother: Earl Kenneth Short and one sister: Lucille Johnson. The body has been cremated and no services are planned at this time. The family will greet friends from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 4, 2003, at the United Church of Faith in Keota. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements. A general memorial fund has been established.

Holbrook - Leona Alice (Kutcher) Koenighain was born July 13, 1912 in Oxford, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Alice Sedlacek Kutcher. She attended school in Oxford. Leona was united in marriage to Donald J. Koenighain on February 10, 1930 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford. She has lived in the Oxford, Cosgrove, Tiffin and Holbrook area’s through out her life. Leona was a homemaker and a loving Mother. She was a member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Holbrook and the Altar and Rosary. She also belongs to Friends of Old St. Michael’s. Leona died Wednesday, October 22, 2003 at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids after an extended illness at the age of 91 years. She is survived by two daughters: Rose Finnegan and husband Vince of Williamsburg, Carol Hanson of Hiawatha; four sons: Gene Koenighain and wife Delores of Iowa City, Mike Koenighain and wife Jean of Williamsburg, Leon Koenighain and wife Marilyn of Marion and Vern Koenighain and wife Bonnie of Oxford; 32 grandchildren, 110 great grandchildren and 11 great great grandchildren; a brother Raymond Kutcher of Iowa City. Leona was preceded in death by her parents, husband in 1989, two brothers: Elmer and Earl Kutcher and two grandchildren Shawn & Karen Finnegan. Celebration of Life Service will be Saturday, October 25, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. in St. Michael’s Church in Holbrook. Fr. Edmond Dunn will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Michael’s cemetery in Holbrook. Visitation will be from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg where there will be a Rosary recited at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will be Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the church. A general memorial has been established.

Wardenburg, Maxine

Williamsburg - Maxine F. Wardenburg was born March 21, 1920 east of Williamsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Martin and Eliza Sandersfeld Kleinmeyer. She was confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church in 1933. She attended St. Paul Parochial School in Williamsburg. Maxine was united in marriage to Wilfred Hopp in 1938. The couple had an infant son who was stillborn in 1946. Wilfred later died in 1949. On September 29, 1950 in Williamsburg Maxine was united in marriage to Henry Otto Wardenburg. To this union they had a daughter Peggy. Maxine worked as a homemaker, helped on the farm and for around 15 years worked at Middle America Motel. She enjoyed camping at Lake Iowa and the Iowa State Fair, word puzzles, being on the bowling league and the outdoors. Maxine was a life long member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, where she has formerly served on the Ladies Guild. She also enjoyed volunteering for the Church and Lutheran Interparish School. Maxine died Saturday, October 18, 2003 at her home in Williamsburg after a short illness with cancer at the age of 83 years. She is survived by a daughter Peggy Wardenburg; a brother, Chub Kleinmeyer and a sister Ruth Gahring all of Williamsburg. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents, husbands Wilfred 1949, Henry in 1994, infant son in 1946 and a sister Flora Stohlmann in 1977. A Celebration of Life Service will be Tuesday, October 21, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran cemetery . Visitation will be Monday, October 20, 2003 from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorials are for Hospice of Compassion of Iowa County or St. Paul Lutheran Church Organ and Sound System Fund.

John David Durst Sr. was born Saturday March 21, 1914 on the family farm in rural Wellman, Iowa the son of Win and Iris (Romine) Durst. John graduated from Wellman High School in 1930 and attended Washington Jr. College. John was married to Maxine Baugh. They had two daughters, Nancy and Johnnette “”Jo”. John was later united in marriage to Elizabeth Bertha Lewis on September 27, 1940 in Kahoka, Missouri. They had four sons, John Jr, Michael, Richard and Duane. John and Bertha lived on the family farm for 63 years. John farmed and ran his own trucking company for many years. John was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, a charter member of the Wellman Lions Club, and a lifetime member and past Grand Noble of IOOF (Iowa Order of Oddfellows). John died on Wednesday, October 15, 2003 at Parkview Manor in Wellman following a brief illness at the age of 89 years. John is survived by his wife, Bertha and six children, Nancy Fisher of Coralville, Iowa, Johnnette and husband Lloyd Criss of West Liberty, Iowa, John Jr. Durst and wife Syd of Wellman, Iowa, Michael Durst of Keota, Iowa, Richard Durst and wife Bonnie of Wellman, Iowa, Duane Durst and wife Carol of Fairfield, Iowa; 20 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.
A Memorial Fund has been established for the Asbury United Methodist Church and Wellman Ambulance.
