HURD, DOROTHY J. (WALSH)

Dorothy June (Walsh) Hurd was born on June 23, 1918, near Montezuma, IA a daughter of Edward and Verlie Tolles Walsh. She graduated from Montezuma High School. She worked various jobs in the area before moving to Chicago, Il to find work. She was united in marriage to Lambert M. Hurd on October 2, 1946 in Chicago. They moved to the family farm near Keswick to live and farm. Dorothy worked two years at Sheller - Globe in Iowa City. She began working at the Amana Colonies Holiday Inn when it opened in October 1971 and retired in December 1984, as Executive Housekeeper. Dorothy was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. She was involved in school organizations when her sons were attending Deep River - Millersburg Schools and was in numerous church activities. She and Lambert enjoyed dancing. Dorothy was an avid reader and enjoyed puzzle solving. She became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in November 1994. Dorothy died following a brief illness on Friday, January 16, 2004 at the Care Center. She lived 85 years, 6 months and 24 days. She is survived by sons Daniel S. Hurd of Coralville; Lawrence J. Hurd and wife Lynn of Kansas City, MO; two brothers: Edward (Marge) Walsh of Tucson, AZ and Ralph (Ruth) Walsh of Fremont, IA; a sister: Janice (Louis) Jones of Belton, MO; as well as many nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Lambert (of 56 years) in October 2002, brothers Irvin and Virgil Walsh and sisters Opal Elam, Verbal Conn and Macel Gilchrist. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 pm on Monday, January 19, 2004 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English. The Rev. David Hitch will officiate. Burial will be in the Armah cemetery near North English. Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 18, 2004 from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. A wake service will be held at 7 pm. At the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Joseph Church in North English or the Armah cemetery Association.

McArtor, Ethal M.

Ethel Marie McArtor, age 85, died of complications on pneumonia, on Monday, January 12, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids. Celebration of Life services will be held at 10:30 am Friday, January 16, 2004 at the North English Christian Church with Rev. Don Ridenour officiating. Burial will follow in the North English cemetery . Visitation will be from 4 pm to 8 pm Thursday at the Powell Funeral home and cremation service in North English. She is survived by a daughter Linda Schulte and husband Roger of Cedar Rapids; grandsons: Troy Schulte and wife Laurie of Kansas City, MO and Trent Schulte and special friend Mindy Kinzenbaw both of Marengo, IA; a great granddaughter Abigail Schulte; sisters Marjorie Johnston and Naomi Morrison both of North English. Ethel Marie McArtor was born on March 21, 1918 a daughter of Otto and Effie Norman Lockridge near Webster, IA. She graduated from Millersburg High School and on December 8, 1941 was united in marriage to Max Harrison McArtor in Lancaster, MO. Since their marriage they have lived in North English. Ethal was a member of the North English Christian Church. She became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in June 2003. Her special joy was her great granddaughter. Ethal was preceded in death by her parents, husband in February 1995, a grandson Eric Todd Schulte and a sister Mae Westfall Jones. A general memorial fund has been established.

Williamsburg - Lois I. Smith was born October 27, 1921 in Malcom, Iowa, the daughter of Lewis and Irma Robb Zirbel. She graduated from Newton High School and attended Capital City Commercial College in Des Moines. While in Des Moines she worked as a bookkeeper for Solar Aircraft. Lois was united in marriage to Melvin Smith on February 14, 1944 in Newton. Lois grew up in the Newton area, lived in Bondurant, where the couple owned and operated Smith Implement for 20 years. Lois later moved the Altoona area, and has spent the last 3 years back in Newton. Lois had planned on moving into Williamsburg in February. She enjoyed quilting, reading and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes play. Lois died Saturday, January 10, 2004 at the Williamsburg Care Center in Williamsburg after a brief illness at the age of 82 years. She is survived by a daughter: Charlotte Smith of Marion; two grandchildren: Cindy Dale and husband Kurt of Williamsburg and D.J. Deardorff and wife Tina of Dubuque; five great grandchildren: Kayla, Spencer and Carly Dale and Tyler and Cody Deardorff. A sister Norma De Hoet of Maquoketa. Lois was preceded in death by her parents, husband on May 4, 1985 and an infant sister. Celebration of Life Service will be Tuesday, January 13, 2004 at 11:00 a.m. in the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Rev James Stewart will officiate. Burial will be Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at the Bondurant cemetery in Bondurant. Visitation will be Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Katie Borntrager was born Saturday, May 27, 1911 in Yoder, Kansas the daughter of John E. and Barbara (Yoder) Borntrager. She accepted Christ in her youth and was a faithful member of the Old Order Amish Church. On August 3, 1958 Katie was united in marriage to Eli M. Borntrager in Jamesport, Missouri. They lived in Jamesport until moving to Kalona in 1973. Katie died on Saturday, January 10, 2004 at her home in rural Kalona following a brief illness at the age of 92 years, 7 months and 14 days. Katie is survived by her husband Eli of Kalona; a step son - Ellis Borntrager of Kalona; 5 step daughters - Dorothy, Mrs. Valentine Mast of Cantril, Iowa; Vera Borntrager of Kalona; Martha, Mrs. Eli Mast of Windsor, Missouri; Mary, Mrs. Paul T. Miller; Minerva, Mrs. S. Duane Miller of Kalona; 34 step grandchildren; 56 step great grandchildren; and a sister Susan Yutzy of Hutchinson, Kansas. Katie was preceded in death by her parents; a grandchild; 2 great grandchildren; and 12 brothers and sisters - Daniel Borntrager, Mary Nissley, Lizzie Nissley, Mattie Borntrager, Aaron Borntrager, Fannie Helmuth, Anna Mast, Ammon Borntrager, John Borntrager, Barbara Troyer, Delila Mullet, and Abraham Borntrager.

SIGOURNEY - Audrey Mackey, age 80, of Sigourney, died Friday, January 9, 2003, at her home following a brief illness. Audrey was born October 26, 1923, in Bethel, Illinois, to John and Maude (Taylor) Drake and received her education in country schools. On September 27, 1941, she married Eugene Mackey in St. Charles, Missouri. In 1947 the couple moved to Nevada, Iowa and in 1958 they moved to Colo, Iowa, where Audrey was a school cook. She retired in 1982. The couple moved to their daughter’s farm in Sigourney in 1994 because of health problems. Audrey was a member of the Sigourney United Methodist Church and enjoyed crocheting, camping and cooking for family get - togethers. Survivors include one son: John (Jay) Mackey and wife Joanne of The Villages, Florida; one daughter: Kay Witte and husband David of Sigourney; two grandchildren: Chris Smart and husband Jeremy of Marion and Blaine Witte and wife Diane of Goodthunder, Minnesota; four great grandchildren: Kelsey Smart, Ethan Smart, Travis Witte and Amy Witte; one sister: Deed Hymes of Chapin, Illinois and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Eugene in March of 2003 and one sister: Rovia Griffin. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 12, 2004, at the Sigourney United Methodist Church with Rev. Danny Lemons officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. Sunday at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney. A memorial fund has been established for Keokuk County Public Health or Hospice of Keokuk County. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.

North English dateline Dale D. Ballard, age 91, of North English, died suddenly Thursday, January 8, 2004, at the Marengo Memorial Hospital. Dale was born September 2, 1912, southeast of Millersburg, to William D. and Della (Geiger) Ballard. He was born and raised in the same house that he raised his own family. He attended country school and later Millersburg Public School. On January 31, 1941, he married Muriel Smith at the Marengo Methodist Church Parsonage. The couple lived and farmed on Dale's home place until retiring and moving to North English in 1977. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in North English and had an interest in older farm machinery. Survivors include his wife: Muriel of North English; one son: Billy Ballard and wife Kathie of Marengo; one daughter: Joyce Parsons and husband Steve of Conroy; five grandchildren: Barb Ballard - Heller (Steve), Billy K. Ballard (Kelsie), Jennifer Bierschenk (Cary), David Parsons (Susan) and Becky Parsons; seven great grandchildren: Blake and Lisa Heller, Kyle Dhoudt, Zachary and Ally Bierschenk, Sidney Ballard and Cassie Parsons and one sister: Greta Newberry and husband Gerald of North English. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son: Donald Lee Ballard; three brothers: Cecil, Forrest and Kenneth and two sisters: Iola Wichman and Gladys Butler. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English with Pastor Don Ridenour and Rev. Mary McAtee officiating. Burial will be at Millersburg cemetery . Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. A general memorial fund has been established.

Niswander, Ada B.
October 21, 1915 - January 08, 2004

Ada Blanche Niswander, age 88, of Knoxville and formerly of Keswick, died Thursday, January 8, 2004 at Comfort House (Hospice of Pella), following an extended illness. Celebration of Life Services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday, January 12, 2004 at the Keswick United Methodist Church. Pastors Dick Smith and Don Ridenour will officiate. Burial will be in the Sixteen cemetery near Thornburg. Visitation will be from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Sunday at the Powell Funeral Home in North English. A memorial fund has been established for the Keswick United Methodist Church, the First United Methodist Church of Knoxville and Hospice of Pella. Ada Blanche Niswander was born on October 21, 1915 northwest of Millersburg, a daughter of Harley and Sylvia Jordan Cover. When she was nine her family moved to Wisconsin. She graduated from high school in Necedah, Wisconsin in 1932 and attended Kansas City Wesleyan College and Coe College. In 1937, Ada began teaching in Gibson, Iowa, where she taught for four years. Ada was united in marriage to Lowell C. Niswander at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA on December 24, 1940. They farmed in the Keswick area and moved into Keswick in December of 1994. Ada was a member of the United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for many years, was a founding member of the Thornburg Friendly Garden Club and was an avid cake baker. Lowell preceded her in death in February 1995. Ada became a resident at West Ridge Care Center in Knoxville in April of 2000. She is survived by a son Larry Niswander (Margaret) of Grinnell, IA; a daughter Merna Furney (Allan) of Knoxville, IA; three grandchildren: Timothy Niswander of Des Moines, IA; Lisa Furney of Oskaloosa, IA; Teresa Rubendall (Steve) of Grinnell; two great grandchildren: Gabriella & Zoe Niswander both of Des Moines; a brother Harley Cover of North English; and sisters: Gladys Geyer of Albia, IA and Kathryn Striegel of Phoenix, AZ. Ada was preceded in death by her parents, husband and a sister Helen Grimm.

Alene L. Millice was born January 24, 1915 near Frytown, Iowa, the daughter of George V. and Nellie Marie Crow Fry. She attended rural Center school and was united in marriage to Chase Millice on June 10, 1938 in Frytown. They moved into the Wellman community in 1938. Alene was a homemaker, worked as a cook for the Mid - Prairie Schools for 16 years and also for the Wellman Senior Center from 1976 to her retirement in 1994. Alene was a member of the Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church and a 60 year member of the Rebekah Lodge. She died of cancer on Thursday, January 8, 2004 at Parkview Manor in Wellman at the age of 88 years. Alene is survived by three sons: James D. Millice and wife Cozy of Wellman - Glenn E. Millice and wife Joyce of Wellman and Paul H. Millice and wife Nancy of Iowa City; a daughter Janice Grigsby and husband Bob of Wellman; ten grandchildren: Tony Millice and wife Chris, Andy Millice, Mark Millice and wife Sandy, Angie Smeltzer and husband Jeff, Jennifer Chiavetta, Mike Millice, Steve Etheredge, B.J. McDuffie, Warren McDuffie and Jonathan Phillips; 10 great grandchildren: Rochelle, Devin, Breanna and Kristina Millice, Madison and Cotton Smeltzer, Chase Millice, Eva Etheredge, Analisa and Nicholas Chiavetta; two sisters: Vera Semler of Story City and Deloras Paulsen of Iowa City; and four brothers: Arlo Fry of Iowa City, Earl and George Fry of Kalona and Dr. Daryl Fry of Naples, Florida. Alene was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband Chase in 1997.

Ronald “R.J.” James Williams was born November 1, 1986 in Iowa City, Iowa the son of Ron Williams and Susannah Blauvelt. He was a junior at Keota High School. R.J. was a member of the Kalona Christian Fellowship Church in Kalona, and he was a member of the Brotherhood of Saint Andrew. R. J. was a member of the 76 Progressive 4 - H Club in Keota, and a lifetime member of the Association of Blauvelt Descendents. He was a good mechanic and enjoyed fixing things. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. R.J. died on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City from injuries suffered in a dirt bike accident near Keota. He was 17 years old. R.J. is survived by his mother - Susy Williams of Keota; his father - Ron Williams of Kalona; 3 brothers - Anthony age 14, Christopher age 13, and Zachary age 11 all of Keota; maternal grandparents - Jim and Joyce Blauvelt of Washington; and his beloved dog Eleanor. R.J. was preceded in death by his grandmother - Virginia Wilburn; and great grandparents - Lloyd and Margie Marek.
A general memorial fund has been established.

Williamsburg - Harlan Henry (Claus) Huedepohl was born April 1, 1929 in York township near Williamsburg, Iowa, the son of John G and Louise Kleinmeyer Hudepohl. He attended Immanuel Lutheran School and graduated from Williamsburg High School in 1946. He was confirmed May 24, 1942. Harlan served in the Korean War from 1951 to 1953. Harlan was united in marriage to Joanne Theodora Moennich on July 30, 1955 at St. John’s Lutheran Church near Homestead. He was a life long resident of York township, from being born on the home place, to raising his own family there. Harlan was a life long farmer and a child of God. Harlan was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, served two terms as President of Iowa County Cattlemen’s Association, two terms as a board member of the Iowa County Cattlemen’s Association, two terms as Chairman of the Immanuel Lutheran Church Congregation, served as LIS treasurer and bus board, former LLL District President and presently served as Vice President of LLL, County Compensation Board, Immanuel Lutheran Choir for over 50 years and served on the District Walther League board. Harlan passed away peacefully in the loving arms of his wife Joanne on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer at the age of 74 years. Survivors include his wife Joanne of 48 years; a daughter: Ann Cromwell and husband Chris of Williamsburg; three sons: John Huedepohl and wife Wendy of Lee Summit, Missouri, Gary Huedepohl and Fiancee Debbie Bushon of Des Moines and Kevin Huedepohl and friend Lea Benson of Williamsburg. Three grandchildren: Katy & Ted Cromwell and Olivia Huedepohl. A sister: Lillian Wichmann and husband Orville of Homestead; a brother - in - law: Ted Moennich and wife Carolyn of Homestead, a sister - in - law: Zelma Hudeepohl of Amana and an uncle Arnold Huedepohl of Homestead. Harlan is preceded in death by his father in 1987, mother in 1986 and a brother Milton in 2001. A Celebration of Life Service will be10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 9, 2004 at Immanuel Lutheran Church near Williamsburg, with Pastor Richard Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the Immanuel Lutheran cemetery . Visitation will be from 3:00 to 8:00 P.M. Thursday January 8, 2004 at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Williamsburg. Memorial are for Lutheran Interparish School, Immanuel Lutheran Church Air Conditioning Fund or Donors Choice.
