Harold D. Tadlock was born April 24, 1925 in Washington County, Iowa the son of Ralph and Doris (Blumenstein) Tadlock. He graduated from Wellman High School in 1943. He served in the Army during World War II. On October 9, 1964 he was united in marriage to Rolene Miller Jacobs in Tipton, Iowa. He lived in the Wellman and Iowa City communities all of his life. Harold owned and operated the Texaco gas station in Wellman for a number of years, and then worked in the maintenance department at the University of Iowa Hospital. Harold was a member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge, Charles Polton American Legion Post and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Harold died suddenly on Monday, January 5, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City at the age of 78 years. Harold is survived by 3 sons - Randy Tadlock and wife Sheree of Iowa City; Craig Tadlock and wife Simone of ElPaso, Texas; Jeff Tadlock and wife Deanne of West Branch; 3 grandsons - Devin Tadlock, Seth Tadlock, Brain Tadlock; 3 granddaughters - Brenna Stoops and husband Rogen, Kaylyn Tadlock, Megan Tadlock; and a sister - Betty Tadlock of Wellman. Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Rolene; a son Gary; a grandson Jared; a brother Duane; and an infant sister - Lois.
A memorial fund has been establsihed for the Wellman Volunteer Fire Department.

North English dateline Joseph Cloyd (J.C.) Vercande, age 95, died following a brief illness on Monday, January 5, 2004 at the English Valley Care Center in North English. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Thursday, January 8, 2004, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in North English with the Rev. David Hitch officiating. Burial will be in the St. Patrick Little Creek cemetery near Kinross. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, January 7, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. A wake service will be held at 6:30 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Visitation will continue from 9:00 A.M. until service time Thursday at the church. A general memorial fund has been established. J.C. was born on January 26, 1908, near Williamsburg, IA, a son of Camil and Ines Pierce Vercande. He attended Pilot Grove Country School near Williamsburg. On September 7, 1927, he was united in marriage to Martha Anna Schwarting in Williamsburg. They farmed near Williamsburg until 1940, when they moved to their farm near North English. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, a Farm Bureau member since 1931 and had served on the Supply County Board in Williamsburg for 12 years. J.C also did road work for English Township several years. He retired from farming in 1995. He became a resident of the English Valley Care Center in North English in August 1998. He is survived by sons Leo Vercande; Eldon (Peggy) Vercande; Dale (Darlene), Benny (Jan) Vercande all of North English; and Robert (Marianne) Vercande of Hills, IA; 22 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; 2 brothers: Vernon (Bus) Vercande of Ladora, IA; Lawrence (Pat) Vercande of Brooklyn, IA; 4 sisters: Mae Zuber of Williamsburg; Anna Kruse and Jean Smith both of Tucson, AZ; Lanore Benest of Cedar Rapids, IA. J.C. was preceded in death by his parents, wife Martha, a daughter Maryann Fuller, an infant granddaughter, 2 infant great granddaughters and sister Irene Vercande.

Garringer, Robert

Robert D. (Bob) Garringer was born March 3, 1936 near Parnell, Iowa, a son of John D. & Bertha Irene Claypool Garringer. He grew up in the Yankee Point Community, where he attended country school. He later attended North English High School. On September 9, 1960, Robert married Shirley Denison in Ft. Dodge, Iowa. He served in the US Army as a para - trooper and was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and had been Post Commander of the Vincent Carney American Legion Post #369 in Parnell. Robert Lived most of his life in the North English - Parnell communities, moving to Parnell in 1972. He drove a truck most of his life and worked some construction. He retired 6 years ago from Marengo Ready Mix. Robert enjoyed hunting, fishing camping and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He especially was proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed following their activities. He died following an extended illness at his home on Friday, January 2, 2004 at the age of 67 years. He is survived by his wife Shirley; three sons: Rob of Williamsburg, Rick and his wife Teresa of Marengo, Rodger of Williamsburg; two daughters: Sheila McBride of Marengo and Cindy Schlesselman and husband Eric of Williamsburg; 9 grandchildren: Rick, Anna, Jacob, Reif, Amber, Sarah, Austin, Andrew and Sophia: brothers: James (Doc) and wife Anne of Williamsburg, Charles and wife Janice of Conroy, Dean and wife Gwen of Phillips, NE. Robert was proceeded in death by his parents and brothers: Glenn, Al, Donald, Marvin, Arnold, John Francis and Ronald. Memorial services will be held at 1:30 PM Monday, January 5, 2004 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Pastor Edwin Jordan will officiate. There will be no public visitation. Burial of his ashes along with military rites will be in the Yankee Point cemetery near North English.

Leonard J. Sondag was born November 6, 1917, in Harper, Iowa, the son of Matts and Rose (Pauly) Sondag. He graduated from Keota High School in 1937. On May 28, 1940 he was united in marriage to D. Marjorie Chambers at the St. Mary Church Rectory in Keota. He has lived in the Keota and Harper communities all of his life where he was a mechanic for 43 years and worked for Gretter Motors for 37 years. Leonard was a member of the Holy Trinity Parish St. Mary Catholic Church and the Lions Club. He enjoyed handyman work and fishing. Leonard died on Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at the Maplewood Manor in Keota following a brief illness at the age of 86 years. Leonard is survived by a son - Gary Sondag and wife Elaine of Marion; a daughter - Patty Greiner and husband Roger of West Chester; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; and a brother - Clare Sondag of Keota. Leonard was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Marjorie in August of 1998.
A memorial fund has been established for Maplewood Manor.

D. Evelyn McNurlen was born January 20, 1919 in Hayesville, Iowa the daughter of Dick and Goldie (Walker) Kleinschmidt. She graduated from Sigourney High School in 1936. She taught rural country school for several years. On January 4, 1942 she was united in marriage to William “Billie Joe” McNurlen in Kahoka, Missouri. She has lived most all of her life in Keota where she and her husband owned and operated McNurlen Produce for 51 years. Evelyn was an avid Cubs fan. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary, Emerald Rebekah Lodge, and the Neighbors Club. Evelyn died Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at the Washington County Hospital in Washington following a sudden illness at the age of 84 years. Evelyn is survived by 3 sons - James McNurlen and wife Donna of Harper; Richard McNurlen and wife Janis of Keota; Charles McNurlen and wife Linda of Carlyle, Illinois; 10 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; a brother - in - law and sister - in - law Leroy and Margaret Lillig; and a sister - in - law Helen Kleinschmidt. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in July of 1991; a grandson Allan McNurlen; 2 sisters - Lavetta Keller and Ailene Kleinschmidt; and a brother - Dwight Kleinschmidt.
A memorial fund has been established for the Keota QRS.

SIGOURNEY - Corinne Horras, age 86, of Sigourney, died Tuesday, December 30, 2003, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney, following a brief illness. Corinne was born September 25, 1917, in Keota, Iowa, to Peter and Margaret (Allinger) Adrian. She graduated from Keota High School and the University of Iowa, and received her Master’s Degree in Special Education from Drake University. On May 5, 1948, she married Elmer “Whitey” Horras in Sigourney. Following marriage the couple lived in Des Moines and Ottumwa before moving to Sigourney in the late 1960's. Corinne taught school for 30+ years, mostly in the North English School District. She was an active member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney, the Altar and Rosary Society and Bible study groups. She was also a member of the American Education Association and the University of Iowa Alumni Association. Corinne enjoyed spending time with family and friends as well as traveling. Survivors include two sons: Dan and wife Kim of Miamisburg, Ohio and Bob and wife Sherry of Sigourney and five grandchildren: Cory, Kristen, Jordan, Taylor and Justin. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband: Elmer in 1974; four brothers: Don, Evert, Bud and her twin, Eugene, in infancy and three sisters: Marcella, Marguerite and Geneva. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, December 3, 2003, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Sigourney with Rev. Philip Ryan officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary Catholic cemetery in Sigourney. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Friday at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney and from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday at the church, where there will be a Rosary Service at 7:00 p.m. A memorial fund has been established for the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

Williamsburg - Sherri Jean Nidey was born March 14, 1962 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, the daughter of Ruskin Loyal and Helen Mathilda Maeder Nidey. She was baptized March 17, 1962 in Cedar Rapids. Sherri lived with her mother all of her life until 1998 when she moved to Hillside Estates near Williamsburg. She has resided the last 6 months at the Iowa City Rehab and Health Care Center in Iowa City. Sherri enjoyed listening to music and traveling with her mother. She never met a stranger, everyone was her friend. Sherri worked at REA in Conroy for more that 20 years, until her health failed. Sherri was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg and attended the His Too Bible Class. Sherri died Monday, December 29, 2003 at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after complications with pneumonia at the age of 41 years, 9 months and 15 days. Survivors include her mother Helen Nidey of Williamsburg, two brothers: Dennis Nidey, wife Paulette of Barrington, Illinois, Ronald Nidey, wife Paula of Gilbert, Arizona; five sisters: Sandra Kemp, husband Lee of Fort Morgan Colorado, Linda Davies, husband Ray of Iowa City, Iowa, Carolyn Weislik, husband Ronald of Charlevoix, Michigan, Connie Gaumon, husband Denny of Cedar Rapids, and Susan Linsley, husband Jim of Marion, Iowa. And many niece and nephews Sherri was preceded in death by her father in 1967 and a nephew Marty Davies in 1989. Celebration of Life Service will be Thursday, January 1, 2004 at 10:30 am at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Pastor Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran cemetery . Visitation will be Wednesday from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M. At the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Memorial are for REA in Conroy and Hillside Estates.

Ruby Ellen Gingerich was born August 18, 1927 near Wellman, Iowa the daughter of John and Katie (Gingerich) Kinsinger. She graduated form Kalona High School in 1946. On November 14, 1948 she was united in marriage to Alva Gingerich Jr. at the East Union Mennonite Church in rural Kalona. They lived and raised their family on Ruby’s family farm near Wellman until moving to Kalona in August of 2000. Ruby was a member of the East Union Mennonite Church, where she served as an elder, was active in WMSC and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. Ruby died on Monday, December 29, 2003 at her home in Kalona following a brief illness at the age of 76 years. Ruby is survived by her husband Alva of Kalona; 4 children - Judy Gingerich and Debra of Hills; Randy Gingerich and wife Cheryl of Wellman; Marcia Gingerich and husband Steve Elvidge of Kalona; Shari Nye and husband Tom of Wellman; 10 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; and a sister Marvel Hochstedler and husband Don of Kalona. Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, a son Kenton, 2 sisters - Mildred Yoder and Lorena Kinsinger and a brother - Maynard Kinsinger.
A memorial fund has been established for the East Union Mennonite Church and the Pleasantview Home.

Williamsburg - Kathleen M. Bean was born November 19, 1924 near Holbrook, Iowa, the daughter of Pete and Elizabeth Duffy Kelly. She graduated from Parnell High School and Capri Cosmetology. Kathleen was united in marriage to Jess W. Bean on June 1, 1954 in Williamsburg. She was a life long resident of the Williamsburg area, where she worked as beauticians for over 40 years. Kathleen was a member of the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Altar and Rosary Society and the National Society of Foresters. Kathleen died Sunday, December 28, 2003 at the English Valley Care Center in North English after a short illness at the age of 78 years. She is survived by a son Bill Bean and wife Roberta of Cedar Rapids; a daughter Mary Pat Reynolds of San Antonio, Texas; five grandchildren: Kelly and Meghan Bean, and Andrew, William and Sarah Reynolds; two sisters: Patricia Simon of Riverside and Annabel Kelly of Parnell and a brother: Jim Kelly of Parnell and a sister in law Delores Kelly of Las Vegas. Kathleen was preceded in death by her parents and husband in 1994. Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, December 31, 2003 at 10:00 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Williamsburg. Fr Joseph Roost will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Mary’s cemetery . Visitation will be 3 to 8:00 pm Tuesday at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg where there will be a prayer service at 7:00p.m. Memorials are for St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Casket Bearers: Dan Simon, Dave Simon, Wayne Simon, Andrew Bean, Dave Amelon, Mike Freel, Kelly Bean, William Bean. Vocalist: Bill & Rita McDonald Organist: Fr. Joseph Roost.
