Gail Laurene Van Auken, age 94, of North English, died Friday, December 19, 2003, following a short illness at the English Valley Care Center in North English. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM Tuesday, December 23, 2003 at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in North English. Pastor Don Ridenour will officiate. Burial will be in the North English cemetery . Visitation will be held at the funeral home from 3:00 PM to 7:30 PM on Monday, December 21st. A general memorial fund has been established. Gail Laurene Van Auken was born on April 5, 1909 near South English, IA, a daughter of Sam & Carrie McAfferty Miller. She attended country school and graduated from South English High School. Gail studied Normal Training at Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls and then taught in country schools near South English until her marriage. Gail was united in marriage to Lyle S. (Pete) Van Auken on September 21, 1930 at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They lived on the home farm southeast of North English. Gail was a member of the North English Christian Church and the Union Busy Bee's neighborhood club. She enjoyed sewing, doing crochet work and researching family history. After their retirement from farming, Gail helped do finish work on Lyle's woodworking projects. Lyle preceded her in death in December 1997. Gail became a resident at Maplewood Manor in Keota in December 1997, and moved to the English Valley Care Center in North English in March 1998. Gail died following a short illness at the Care Center on Friday, December 19, 2003. She lived 94 years, 8 months and 14 days. She is survived by a daughter Marlene Leinenweaver and her husband Keith of rural South English, IA; a son Stanley Van Auken and his wife Zeita of Cascade, CO; 6 grandchildren; 13 great grandchildren; and a great great grand daughter. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lyle, and sisters Goldie White, Marjorie Saxton and Opal Keely.

DELTA - Gerald G. Dawson, age 80, of Delta, died Thursday, December 18, 2003, at the Ottumwa Regional Health Center in Ottumwa, following a brief illness. Gerald was born January 9, 1923, near Hayesville, Iowa, to Tom and Faye (Martin) Dawson. He attended country school near Hayesville and graduated from Sigourney High School where he currently holds state records in track and field and excelled in football. On June 10, 1943 he married Mary Jane Woods in Ottumwa. The couple lived and farmed near Hayesville and Rose Hill, moving to the Delta area in 1970. In addition to farming they were known for their purebred Duroc hogs and dairy herd. Survivors include two sons: Scott Dawson of Delta and Travis Dawson and wife Teresa of Delta and two grandsons: Trent and Evan. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Mary in 1993, and one sister: Marilyn Weber. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m .Saturday, December 20, 2003, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney with Vince Homan officiating. Burial will be at Garrett cemetery near Delta. Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday, December 19, 2003, at the Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel in Sigourney, where the family will be present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. A general memorial fund has been established. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

MASON, RUTH

Ruth Mason was born on April 8, 1917, on a farm near North English, IA, a daughter of Charles and Ottie Dubishar Hahn. She attended country school and graduated from North English High School. Ruth married Alva Moffit and farmed in the North English area.. He preceded her in death in 1953. Ruth moved into North English in 1955. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, the UMW, the Fortnightly Club, the VFW Auxiliary and was a charter board member of the North English Community Center. Ruth married Keith Dow Mason on June 20, 1961 in Cedar Rapids, IA. He preceded her in death in December 2003. Ruth worked a number of years at the Amana Woolen Mills, the English Valley Care Center in North English and most recently at the Amana Holiday Inn. She died suddenly at her home in North English on Wednesday, December 17, 2003. Ruth lived 86 years, 8 months and 9 days. She is survived by a daughter Gloria Johnson (Byron) of Barrington Hills, IL; sons: Robert L. Moffit (Suzanne) and Lynn Moffit (Sherry) both of North English; a step son Michael Mason (Rosetta) of North English; and step daughters Sandra Young and Jil Babbitt both of Kent WA. Also surviving are 19 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, a sister Opal Wade and brothers Virgil, Elvin, Orlo, Leland and Charles Hahn. Funeral services will be held at the North English United Methodist Church at 10:30 A.M. on Monday, December 22, 2000 with the Rev. Mary McAtee officiating. Burial will be in North English cemetery . Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, December 21st from 4 pm until 7 pm. A memorial fund has been established for the First Responders and the North English Community Center.

E. Pearl Moore was born October 30, 1923 in Hilton Township, Iowa the daughter of Howard and Edith Niner Vaughn. She grew up in the Marengo and Ottumwa communities and graduated from Ottumwa High School. Pearl was a long time resident of Ottumwa and Brooklyn, Iowa and has lived in Williamsburg the past 8 years. She retired from working at the Southeast Iowa Blood Center in Ottumwa. She was a member of St. Paul United Methodist church of Williamsburg and the American Legion Auxiliary. She was very dedicated to the Auxiliary and spend many hours volunteering at V.A. Hospitals in Knoxville and Iowa City. Pearl died on Monday, December 15, 2003 at University Hospital in Iowa City after a lingering illness at the age of 80 years. She is survived by two sons: Arthur W. Moore and wife Alice of Williamsburg and Steven C. Moore and wife Sandy of Jackson, Missouri; four grandchildren: Miranda Hughes of Des Moines - Sherry Eich of Little Canada, Minnesota - Angela Selzer of Jackson, Missouri and Anthony Moore serving with the US Navy in Japan; and three great grandchildren: Jack and Samuel Hughes and Andrew Selzer. Pearl was preceded in death by her parents and a sister Shirley Lee.
In leu of flowers a memorial fund has been established for the American Legion Junior Auxiliary and can be sent to the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home, P.O. Box 269, Williamsburg, Iowa 62361.

Elizabeth (Betty) M. Thomas, age 89, died from complications of pneumonia on Sunday, January 4, 2004 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services will be held at the Powell Funeral Home & Cremation Service in North English on Thursday, January 8, 2004 at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Don Ridenour officiating. Burial will be in the North English cemetery . Friends may call at the funeral home one hour before service time on Thursday. She is survived by a daughter Margaret Squires of Des Moines, IA and a son Bruce Thomas of Ormond Beach, FL.

Dorothy A. Kerr was born on September 1, 1917, near Ollie, IA, a daughter of Charles and Maggie Glays Williams. She attended No. 10 Country School through the eighth grade and graduated from Ollie High School. She sang for school and church programs from age 5, and learned to play the violin while in grade school. She played in the Ollie High School Band and learned to play the tuba during this time. She played six instruments - the organ, accordion, violin, tuba, Hawaiian guitar and harmonica, several of which were self taught. Dorothy also played on the girls’ basketball team. Dorothy became the wife of Homer S. Kerr on January 2, 1937, in Ottumwa, IA. She was a member of the English River Church of the Brethren. While Homer did custom farm work, Dorothy was the main chore girl - taking care of hogs, cows and the chickens. She was also an avid gardener and did a lot of canning and freezing of fruits and vegetables. Her main concern was always her family. She kept up with the family weekly by letters as well as writing often to extended family and friends. Dorothy was a clerk at the grocery store in South English for several years. Homer and Dorothy went on frequent trips - to Virginia, Kansas, Maryland, Florida, California, Mississippi, Minnesota, Canada, and Alaska visiting family and friends. Dorothy learned at an early age to embroider and in later years, crocheting. Any free time was spent doingembroidery and crocheting for gifts. She made over 100 baby afghans, most of which were gifts, and sent them all over the world. She also didembroidery on pillowcases and dish towels, made hooked rugs, did cross stitching on multiple items which included baby bibs and hand towels. Dorothy was also an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles and other word puzzles. Dorothy died on Sunday, April 11, 2004, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City, IA at the age of 86 years, 7 months, and 10 days. She is survived by her husband Homer S. Kerr of South English; 4 daughters: Phyllis (Willie) Coffman and husband Terry Greene of South English, IA; Jo Ann Horner and husband Bill of Larned, KS; Judith (Jude) Krehbiel and husband Doug of Newton, KS; Sarah Jane (Janie) Miller and husband Gary of North English, IA; and a son John S. Kerr and wife Nancy of Webster, IA. Also surviving are 14 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, a brother John Williams and 2 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Wednesday, April 14, 2004 at the English River Church of the Brethren near South English. Pastor Beth Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery . Visitation will be held at the Powell Funeral Home and Cremation service in North English on Tuesday, April 13, 2004, from 4 PM to 8 PM. A memorial fund has been established for the English River Church of the Brethren, Keokuk County Ambulance and American Diabetes Association.

HARPER - William V. “Bill” Besser, age 72, of Harper, died Thursday, April 8, 2004, at the University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City following a lengthy illness. Bill was born February 18, 1932, in Harper, to William T. and Madeleine (Striegel) Besser and graduated from St. Elizabeth High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. On April 30, 1955, Bill married Jeanette M. Hammen at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper. A lifelong resident of Harper, Bill worked for the Natural Gas Pipeline for 31 years as a truck driver and large equipment operator. He was a member of Holy Trinity Parish - St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper and the Knights of Columbus, where he served as a Past Grand Knight. Bill enjoyed cars, fishing and his beloved family. Survivors include his wife: Jeanette of Harper; one daughter: Rebecca Sue Frederick and husband Craig; three grandchildren: Keary R. Quigley and wife Chantae, Kristi L. Quigley and Nicole D. Frederick; one step - grandson: Daniel J. Frederick; one sister: Mary Ann Lewis and special friends Paul and Lee Jaeger. He was preceded in death by his parents. Mass of the Resurrection will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 12, 2004, at Holy Trinity Parish - St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Harper with Rev. Marty Goetz officiating. Burial will be at St. Elizabeth cemetery . Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Sunday, April 11, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota, where there will be a Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m, followed by a rosary. A general memorial fund has been established. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service is handling the arrangements.

SIGOURNEY - Gladys O. “Westie” Utterback, age 97, of Sigourney, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at the Keokuk County Health Center in Sigourney. Westie was born April 2, 1907 in Knoxville, Iowa, to Harley C. and Bertha (Summy) West. She graduated from high school and the School of Cosmetology in 1925. On July 28, 1929 she married Hubert Utterback at her parents’ home in Linden, Iowa. In 1927 Westie moved to Sigourney, where she operated a beauty shop until 1959. She and Hubert also operated a manufacturing company which made soft plastic items for sale to beauty shops. Westie was a member of the Sigourney Christian Church and T.T.T. She enjoyed playing golf and bridge and wintering in Tucson, Arizona. Survivors include her sister - in - law: Ruth West of Tucson, Arizona, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Hubert in 1973, one brother, N. Harold West and one sister, Veva White. Memorial services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 8, 2004, at the Sigourney Christian Church with Rev. Jim Bringman and Rev. Frances Baumert officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Grove cemetery in Sigourney A memorial fund has been established for the Keokuk County Health Center Activities Fund. Reynolds - Powell Funeral Chapel and Cremation Service in Sigourney is handling the arrangements.

Williamsburg - Erna Christina Wardenburg was born March 23, 1909 in York Township, Iowa County, Iowa, the daughter of Basil and Frieda Schuerman Zuber. She was baptized on April 26, 1909 at St. John’s Lutheran Church and confirmed April 9, 1922 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Conroy. She attended school at St. John’s Lutheran School near Homestead. Erna was united in marriage to Edwin F. H. Wardenburg on February 11, 1931 at St John’s Lutheran Church near Homestead. The couple farmed in York Township until 1970, when they moved to Williamsburg. Erna became a resident at Colonial Manor in Amana in October of 2003. She worked a number of years at the Middle America Motel as a housekeeper. Erna was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Erna died Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Mercy Medical Center in Cedar Rapids after a sudden illness at the age of 95 years and 5 days. Erna is survived by her daughter Lois Jean Arp and husband Jon Lyn of Williamsburg; a sister: Ruth Sandersfeld of Williamsburg; six grandchildren: Lori McDowell, Lisa Arp, Joel Arp, Cindy Ruchotzke, Audrey Dahl and Ronald Read; four great grandchildren: Morgan McDowell, Tyler Jordon, Ryan Ruchotzke and Jordon Ruchotzke. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband in October of 1972, two daughters: an infant Kaye and Joann Read in March 2000, three sisters: Lydia Olson, Hildegard Stohlmann and Norma Rudin, and a brother Eugene Zuber. Celebration of Life Service will be Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at 10:30 a.m. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church in Williamsburg. Rev. Carl Cloeter will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Paul Lutheran cemetery . Visitation will be Tuesday, March 30, 2004 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Uhlmann - Powell Funeral Home in Williamsburg. Memorials are for St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Burial will be in St. Michael cemetery , Holbrook, IA. Visitation will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Parnell on Tuesday, March 30th from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm, with a rosary/prayer service at 7:30 PM. A memorial fund has been established for Friends of Old St. Michael’s and the St. Michael’s cemetery Fund. Michael John (Mick) Gaffey was born on September 13, 1966 in Iowa City, IA, a son of John & Helen O’Meara Gaffey. He attended school in Washington, IA, graduating in 1985, and attended Iowa State University in Ames. Mick farmed near Parnell until recently becoming a mortgage broker. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He was an avid golfer, loved traveling, especially where there were beaches, and meeting people. Mick is survived by is parents, John & Helen Gaffey of Williamsburg; six sisters: Christy Gaffey of Arlington, VA; Carrie Gaffey of Evanston, IL; Pam (Paul) Masterson of Witchita, KS; Mary Pat Gaffey of Eureka, KS; Cindy (Garry) Feldman of Deerfield, IL; and Jolene (Michael) Smyth of Arlington Heights, IL. Also surviving are six nieces and nephews: Rachel & Zachary Feldman, John & Daniel Masterson, Maddy & Liam Smyth; a great number of aunts, uncles, cousins and numerous friends.

KEOTA - Gordon “Gordy” Pearson, age 79, of Keota, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004, at the Maplewood Manor in Keota following a brief illness. Gordy was born January 7, 1925 in West Chester, Iowa to Willis Earl and Sarah Jane (Rohrer) Pearson and graduated from West Chester High School in 1943. He served during World War II in the 3rd Army, 12th Armored Division under General Patton, which was involved with the Battle of the Bulge. On August 23, 1947 he married Rosalie Smith at the Presbyterian Church in Keota. Following marriage the couple lived in West Chester until 1950, when they moved to Keota. Gordy owned and operated Pearson’s Service Station for 32 years, retiring in 1982. He was a member of the United Church of Faith, V.F.W., American Legion, was a volunteer fire fighter and enjoyed fishing, mushrooming, gardening and dogs. Survivors include two daughters: Linda Pearson See and husband Jim of Mason City, Sue Pearson of Iowa City; one son: Dick Pearson and wife Deb of South English; three grandchildren: Jenny, Katie and Matt Pearson and one brother: John “Jack” Pearson of St. Louis, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Rosie in 2000 and one brother, Robert Pearson. Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2004, at the Holy Trinity Parish - St. Mary Catholic Church in Keota with Pastor Sallie Graves officiating. Private burial will be at a later date. Visitation will be from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday, March 26, 2004, at the Powell Funeral Home in Keota. A memorial fund has been established for Hospice of Iowa City or the Washington County Animal Shelter. Powell Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Keota is handling the arrangements.
