Tanya Mortensen

July 22, 1943 - Aug. 1, 2010

Fruitland - Tanya Mortensen, Fruitland, died Aug. 1, 2010, in Kittikas, Wash. A celebration of life was held Saturday, Aug. 28 at Heart ’n Hospice in Fruitland. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to DC Superstars Special Olympics Team in Ontario, thru Sunset Lanes. To make donations, contact Pam Mathis or Tina Freeman. The family wishes to thank all who were a vital part of her life. Tanya was cremated under the direction of Affordable Crematory in Ellensburg, Wash.

Blanche Jefferies

March 14, 1920 - Feb. 20, 2010

Orem, Utah - Blanche Jefferies, 89, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 in Orem, Utah.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday, March 4, at the Nyssa Stake Center, 1309 Park Ave.

A viewing will be held one hour prior to the services. Internment will be at the Nyssa City Cemetery.

She was born on March 14, 1920, in Clearfield, Utah, to Don Carlos and Stella Blanch Bybee Moss.

She graduated from South High School in Salt Lake City, Utah, and married Marvin Chester Jefferies, June 23, 1939, in the Salt Lake Temple. They moved the family to Nyssa, where Marvin owned and operated the local Firestone Store for nearly 30 years.

She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she served in many church callings with the women and the youth organizations. Blanche and Marvin served for eight years in the Boise Temple and two years in the St. George, Utah, Temple.

Blanche will be remembered for her wonderful acts of gentleness, her service and dedication to her husband and family, and for the love and kindness shown to her friends and neighbors in the community.

She is survived by three sons; William (Paula) Jefferies, Sequim, Wash., currently living in China, Michael (Merrilyn) Jefferies, Middleton, Idaho and Scott (Deanne) Jefferies, Florence, Ariz.; and two daughters, Joanne (Mitch) Curtis, Provo, Utah and Jeanne (Gaylen) Spear, Nyssa; 27 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Blanche was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Marvin; and two brothers and sister-in-laws, Don B. (Alice) Moss and Dayle (Joyce) Moss; and a granddaughter Carolee Jefferies.

Mildred Yankey

Feb. 3, 1921 - Feb. 24, 2010

Weiser - Mildred D. Yankey, 89, Weiser, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 24, 2010, in Meridian, Idaho. Mildred was born on Feb. 3, 1921, in her family home in Nampa, Idaho, to Mike and Jennie Duspiva. She was raised in Nampa and graduated from Nampa High School.

Mildred met her husband, the late Lester Yankey, in Caldwell and they were married Jan. 3, 1943, in Tacoma, Wash.

While living in Tacoma, Mildred worked for the Pacific Naval Authority until Lester returned from W.W.II. After World War II they settled in Weiser, where they raised their family. Her daughter, Shirley, was born in Tacoma while her husband was an Army Infantry man in the European Theatre. All the other children were born in Weiser.

Mildred was a school lunch cook. She enjoyed cooking, fishing and crocheting. Following her husband’s death, Mildred lived at the Cottages in Weiser and later at Meridian Care Center.

Over the past several years, Mildred enjoyed the frequent visits of lifelong friends, who would stop to say hello or leave a treat or play cards.

Mildred is survived by her six children; Shirley (Ray) Sweeny, of Solvang,Calif., Ronald Yankey, of Boise, Idaho, Richard (Lynn) Yankey, of Twin Falls, Idaho, Thomas (Jackie) Yankey, of Weiser, Byron (Lynne) Yankey, of Nampa, Idaho, Philip (Judi Tanzman) Yankey, of Pasadena, Calif.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sister, Jean (Robert) Fisher, of Eugene, Ore.; numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester H. Yankey; two brothers; and four sisters.

Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Friday at Thomason Funeral Home. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Thomason Funeral Home with private interment at Hillcrest Cemetery.

Contributions in Mildred’s memory may be made to a charity of your choice.

James Matthew Yoctorowic

May 2, 1933 - Jan. 21, 2010

New Plymouth - James Matthew Yoctorowic, 76, died Thursday, Jan. 21, 2010. James was born May 2, 1933, in Alma, Mont., to Edward and Muriel Yoctorowic. James was the eighth child from a family of 10. James was preceded in death by his parents and seven siblings. He is survived by his brothers, Edward Ben Yoctorowic, New Plymouth, and David Lynn Yoctorowic, Washington, D.C.; a sister, Beth, Salem, Ore.; and a sister, Edwina, Portland, Ore.; and numerous nieces and nephews. James worked in the road construction industry most of his life until retiring to New Plymouth to become a farmer in 1979. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, but above all, he enjoyed the animals on his farm and especially all of the wild ducks and geese he fed daily. James will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

No services will be held, following his wishes. A celebration of his life will be held in the spring. Arrangements are under the direction of Cremation Society of Idaho. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

Richard Dale Statzer

Aug. 8, 1945 - Jan. 17, 2010

New Plymouth - Richard Dale Statzer, 64, New Plymouth, died Sunday, Jan. 17, 2010, at O.H.S.U. in Portland, Ore., with his family by his side. He was the proud father of nine children and shared 25 grandchildren with Catharine Statzer, of 35 years. He will be missed but never forgotten. Rick helped so many with his troubleshooting and mechanic skills. He had many friends and a ton of stories. A memorial will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 5 at the V.F.W. Hall in New Plymouth, Idaho. A silent auction of Ricks tools and machinery will be held to help cover finances.

Mary Jean Nichols

Feb. 15, 1936 - Dec. 8, 2009

Fruitland - Mary Jean Nichols, 73, Fruitland, died Tuesday, Dec. 8, 2009, at the home of her daughter in Weiser. Rosary services will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. Inurnment will follow at Parkview Cemetery in New Plymouth. A dinner reception will follow at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Hall. Condolences to the family may be made at www.lienkaemper-thomason.com.

Mary was born Feb. 15, 1936, in Nyssa to Sam and Nellie Smit. She was the second child of 12. Mary graduated from Nyssa High School in 1955. She married Al Nichols, Jan. 29, 1957, and moved to Ontario. In 1960, Al and Mary purchased a farm in New Acres and raised their family, one daughter and four sons. During this time on the farm, Mary raised chickens, calves, kittens, dogs and numerous other critters.

In addition to working the farm and raising her family, Mary went to work in the food service industry. Various jobs Mary held consisted of managing the Steer Inn in Nyssa and the Red Steer in Ontario. She moved on to work for the Ontario High School and Alameda Elementary School and retired after 15 years of service. After retiring, Mary worked at St. Peters School in the Foster Grandparent Program. She was lovingly referred to as “Grandma Mary.”

This past September, she was diagnosed with cancer. With courage and optimism, Mary chose to undergo chemo and radiation treatments to help control the disease. Mary died peacefully and quietly at home with her family around her.

Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Al Nichols; her parents, Sam and Nell Smit; and brothers, Casey and Sam Smit. She is survived by her children, Pam Compton (Brian), Randy Nichols (Beth), Steve Nichols (Betty), Scott Nichols (JoAnn) and David Nichols; her brothers and sisters, John and Norma Smit, Willie and Jack Sams, Nan Moss, Pete and Teri Smit, Paul and Arlene Smit, BJ Smit, Bob and Sue Smit and Monica and Tony Brunello; and seven grandchildren, Bryce Nichols, Logan Nichols, Christina Nichols, Jake Nichols, Rachel Kofoid, Sarah Reynolds and Tom Compton.

Mary will always be remembered for her loving spirit, huge generosity and her wonderful sense of humor. She brought love and sunshine to everyone she met.

The outpouring of love, cards and phone calls from family and friends were truly a blessing and greatly appreciated.

The family of Mary Jean Nichols wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to everyone for all your support and encouragement through this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to St. Peters Catholic School at 829 S.W. Second Ave., Ontario, OR 97914, or Heart ’N Home Hospice Foundation, 1100 N.W. 12th St., Fruitland, ID 83619.
