Judge Thomas Carmody

Staff at the Cook County courthouse in Bridgeview were in shock Monday after the death of the building's third judge in a six-month period.

Presiding Judge Thomas F. Carmody Jr., who helped colleagues cope with the recent deaths of judges Jim Ryan and James O'Malley, suffered a massive heart attack while playing golf Sunday morning (April 20, 2008) at Gleneagles Country Club in Lemont on Sunday morning. He was 56.

The lifelong Evergreen Park resident's fellow judges praised him Monday for his skills on the bench as well as his administrative abilities, describing him as a friend and a devoted family man.

Circuit Court Chief Judge Timothy Evans, who appointed Carmody as Bridgeview's presiding judge in August 2006, said Carmody's "calm and thoughtful" approach overseeing thousands of cases had helped the Bridgeview courthouse negotiate a number of crises, including the deaths of Ryan and O'Malley.

"He kept things moving smoothly and made sure people's cases were kept on track," Evans said. "We were elected to the bench at the same time in 1992, and he was a good friend."

Circuit Judge David Sterba, who also worked closely with Carmody, said Carmody would be "terribly missed," adding, "He had many prestigious titles, but the one that meant the most to him was 'family man' - he was very proud of his wife and his children."

Carmody graduated from Chicago's John Marshall Law School in 1977 and worked as an assistant public defender for 17 years, rising to supervisory roles at the Markham and Bridgeview courthouses before being elected to the bench in 1992.

He oversaw felony cases - including several high-profile murder cases - before moving to the civil law division in 2000.

"He was always concerned that everybody who came to the court - whether it was a defendant, a victim, an attorney or a member of the public - felt that everything was done fairly," his brother, Matt Carmody, a former prosecutor, said. "It was important to him that everyone who came into that court felt like they were part of the justice system in their community."

"He was a community man through and through - his three sons and his daughter were educated at St. Bernadette School, (and) Brother Rice and Mother McAuley (high schools), and he was married to his wife, Linda, for 28 years," his brother said. "On the morning he died, he'd been to church at 7 a.m. before he went out to play in his golf league."

Visitation will be held from 1 to 9 p.m. Friday at St. Bernadette, 9311 S. Francisco Ave., Evergreen Park.

The funeral will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Worth.

The Rev. Joseph P. McGinnity

The Rev. Joseph P. McGinnity served as assistant pastor at parishes in Oak Lawn and Evergreen Park and taught Christian marriage classes at Brother Rice and Mother McAuley high schools.

The Rev. McGinnity died Friday (April 18, 2008) at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn from respiratory failure and complications from cancer. He was 77. He had been residing at the Bishop Timothy Lyne Residence for retired priests in Palos Park.

The Rev. McGinnity was ordained May 1, 1956, and the following Sunday he celebrated his first solemn Mass at the now-closed St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Chicago. On July 7 of that year, he was named assistant pastor of St. Linus Parish in Oak Lawn, where he remained until 1965.

In June 1974, the Rev. McGinnity became assistant pastor of Queen of Martyrs Parish in Evergreen Park, and two years later, he took the same position at St. Gerald Parish in Oak Lawn, serving until November 1981.

The Rev. McGinnity is survived by his brother, the Rev. Robert McGinnity.

Visitation will be held from 3 to 9 p.m. today and from 11 a.m. until noon Wednesday at St. Zachary Church, 567 W. Algonquin Road, Des Plaines, where the Rev. McGinnity was pastor for nearly 19 years.
