RICARDO (RICK) BASSO
Mulkeytown - Ricardo (Rick) Basso, 44, died in the Marshall Browning Hospital Emergency Room at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dan Williams officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 this evening at the funeral home.
Mr. Basso was born on April 14, 1955, in Omaha, Neb. to Dr. Arthur and Janice (Griffin) Basso.
He was married to Melissa Jane Martin on June 25, 1983.
He was employed by the Franklin-Williamson Bi-County Health Department, and was of the Protestant faith.
He was a member of the Boccie Ball Club in Benton.
In addition to his parents and wife, Melissa, he is survived by one son, Michael Anthony Basso and one daughter, Megan Maria Basso, both at home; a sister Cathy and husband Mike Guthrie of Sesser; two brothers-in-law, Jody and wife Sheila Martin, Frank and wife Ronna Martin; two sisters-in-law, Ricki Martin and Patty and husband Perry Clevenger; 12 nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Anthony Randall Basso.
GENE O. LEWIS
Benton - Gene O. Lewis, died at Severins Intermediate Care, Benton, at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000.
Services will be held Wednesday, Feb. 16, at 11 a..m. in the Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher, with Pastor Robert Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Lewis was a business agent for Local 450 of Aurora.
He was the son of Louie E. and Agnes (Overturf) Lewis. He was married to Mary Ann (Hart) Lewis. She survives.
He is also survived by two sons, Gene H. Lewis of New York, N.Y., Todd Lewis of St. Louis, Mo. brothers, Max Lewis of Marion, Louie E. Lewis Jr. of Bloomington; two sisters, Geneva Bacon of Plymouth, Ind., Betty McNeill of Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Bertha Mae Troutt.
GERALDINE MUIR
Sesser - Geraldine Muir, 79, died at 5 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, 2000 in the Marshall Browning Hospital, Du Quoin.
Arrangements are pending at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home, Sesser.
HAZEL L. HALE
Mt. Vernon
Hazel L. Hale, 90, died at 7:55 a.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2000 in the Nature Trail Home in Mt. Vernon
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Johnston Funeral Home in Mt. Vernon, with the Rev. Raymond Capps officiating. Burial will be in the Kirk Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday to the funeral home.
Mrs. Hale was born on March 9, 1909, in Jefferson County, the daughter of Harry Curtis and Julie (Pearce) Drennan. She was married to Verne Hale, on Aug. 15, 1925. He died Dec. 21, 1986.
She was a retired shoe factory employee, and a member of the Baptist Church in Ina.
She enjoyed bowling.
Surivors include one son, Dennis Hale and wife Deana of Mt. Vernon; one daughter, Vada Flavin and husband Robert of Cottonwood, Ariz.; five grandchildren, Nancy Perkins, Karen Kronenberger, Becky Tyler, Jerry Hale and Mike Kronenberger; two great-grandchildren, Melissa Perkins and Jeremy Kronenberger; one brother, Glen M. Drennan and wife Bea of Mt. Vernon; one sister, Loveda Bailey of St. Louis; one nephew, Ken Bailey.
Her parents, husband and one grandson, David Kronenberger.
ALAN MANIS
Thompsonville - Alan Manis, 15, of 22723 Thompsonville Lake Road, died at 11:18 a.m. on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2000 at Children's Hospital in St. Louis, Mo.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Thompsonville. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Alan was born Aug. 29, 1984 in West Frankfort, the son of Gary and Sharon (Quillman) Manis.
Alan was a special education student at Christopher High School.
Survivors include his parents, Gary and Sharon Manis, Thompsonville, a sister and brother-in-law, Felicia and Russell Parks, Fort Myers, Fla.; a brother, Gary Manis Jr., Lawrence, Kan.; paternal grandparents, Carl and Arleta Manis, Thompsonville.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Valley and Opal (Wingo) Quillman.

JOHN THOMAS "TOM" HOOD
West Frankfort - John Thomas "Tom" Hood, 81, of West Frankfort, died at 9:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2000, at the Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.
Mr. Hood was born July 3, 1918, in Logan, the son of William Thomas Hood and Geraldina "Dina" (Wall). He was married to Margie (Hubbard) Hood Aug. 13, 1938, in Marion, Ky., and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons and spouses, J.T. Hood Jr. and wife, Charlotte, of Henagar, Ala.; Gary Hood and wife, Twyla, of Christopher; and Jack Hood and wife, Candy, of West Frankfort; two daughters and spouses, Sandi and Eddie Paul Davis of Benton and Jane and Dale Jones of McDonugh, Ga.; 10 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Hood was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and three brothers.
He was a member of the Heights Church of God. He worked at Orient No. 2 coal mine for many years and retired in 1975 from the Illinois Dept. of Highways Carbondale office.
A funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 15, at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort, officiated by the Rev. Joe Daniels and the Rev. Richard Keim. Burial will be in East Fork Cemetery.
Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at the funeral home.
THOMAS GABE HART
Dahlgren - Thomas Gabe Hart, 73, of Dahlgren died of natural causes at 12:10 p.m. Friday, Feb. 11, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.
A maintenance worker with the state of Illinois and a disabled American veteran who served as a cook in World War II, Mr. Hart was born Sept. 16, 1926, in Dahlgren, the son of Thomas Gabe Hart and Hazel Reatha (Cox) Hart.
Mr. Hart married Virginia Ruth (Clark) Hart Dec. 23, 1944, in McLeansboro, and she survives.
Also surviving are three sons, Russell Wayne Hart and wife, Charlene, of Dahlgren, Michael Lee Hart and wife, Angela, of Opdyke, and Thomas ("Tee") Hart of Dahlgren; three daughters, Diana Rose Reyling and husband, Andy, of Dahlgren, Cindy Behle and husband, Eric, of Marion, and Leesa Schuster and husband, Scott, of McLeansboro; six grandchildren, Brandon Steven Reyling, Melissa Lynn Hart, Andrea Dyan Reyling, Michael Adam Hart, Christina Jane Hart and Reegan Scott Schuster; three brothers, Evan Hart and wife, Norma, of Dahlgren, Kenneth Hart and wife, Flo Ann, of McLeansboro, and Marshall "Red" Hart and wife, Sue, of Dahlgren; two sisters, Madeline Parkhill of Dahlgren and Verla Anderson and husband, Vern, of Lexington; and three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Arza (Helen Dean) Hart of Dahlgren, Mrs. Delmar (Jane) Hart of Dahlgren and Mrs. Bill (Joan) Hart of Blue Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Arza, Delmar, James and Bill Hart; and three sisters, Irene Hart, June Cross and Earlene Mitchell.
Mr. Hart attended Delafield Baptist Church. He was a member of VFW Post No. 2761 in Benton, a school bus driver for Dahlgren schools and a past Republican precinct committeeman. His hobbies included fishing, walking and cooking.
A funeral service was scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Feb. 14, at the Harre Funeral Home in Dahlgren. Burial was to be at Richardson Hill Cemetery near Dahlgren with military graveside rites by the VFW Post No. 2761 of Benton.
A visitation was held Sunday, Feb. 13, at Harre Funeral Home.
Memorials to Brownsville School will be accepted at the funeral home in Mr. Hart's memory.
VIRGINIA SMITH LAUNIUS
Benton - Virginia Smith Launius, 82, of 713 Burkett Street, died at 8:45 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, at her daughter's home.
Services will be at held at 2 p.m. Friday, in the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, with the Revs. Hal Thompson and Rod Joplin officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery, Benton. Visitation will be held Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Launius was born Nov. 17, 1917, in Franklin County, the daughter of Harvey and Goldie (Reed) Wilkerson. She married Maurice Smith in 1937, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 17, 1973. She married Joe Cecil Launius in 1978 and he preceded her in death on July 19, 1997.
She and her husband Maurice owned and operated the 72 Cab Company in Benton. She was also a retired dispatcher for the Benton Police Department.
She was a member of the Benton Church of God.
Survivors include two daughters, Shirley and husband John Gelch, East Point, Fla., Vicki and husband Ron Slaviero, Benton; four grandchildren, Lynne Hingtgen, Cary, North Carolina; Anthony Gelch, East Point, Fla., Amanda and husband Jimmy Garver, Benton, Kyle Bacon, Nashville, Tenn. four great-grandchildren, Nathan and Savannah Hingtgen, Alexandria and Luke Garver; a sister, Dorothy Evans, Benton; a brother, Paul and wife Tena Wilkerson, Benton; a sister-in-law, Edna Wilkerson, Benton; several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Launius was preceded in death by her parents, two husbands, a son, Terry Smith and a brother, Ralph Wilkerson.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois.
STANLEY LEE GOSSETT
Sesser - Stanley Lee Gossett, 73, died on Thursday, Oct. 5, 2000, in Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9, in the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home, Sesser, with the Rev. Dan Williams officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday to the funeral home.
Mr. Gossett was born on June 22, 1927, in Osage, the son of Samuel Lloyd and Liela (McCalson) Gossett. He was married to Betty Snider Gosset, who died Feb. 14, 1997.
He was a retired coal miner and was of the Protestant faith. He was an Army veteran of World War II and was a member of the V.F.W. in Sesser.
Survivors include Rhonda Skurat, Jerry Gossett, Debra Gossett and Sandra Gossett, all of Sesser; seven grandchildren, David and Jodie Skurat, Josh and Jeremy Gosset, Jonathan, Haley and Shaun Van Hoorebeke; four great-grandchildren; one sister, Maxine Furlow of Moro Illinois.
LENARD O. SWEETIN
Pittsburg - Leonard O. Sweetin, 61, a former area resident, died in Franklin County on Saturday, Oct. 14, 2000.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 17, at the Ina Free Will Baptist Church with brother David Shores officiating. Burial will be in the Kirk Cemetery in Ina. Friends may call from 6 to 8 this evening at the Johnston Funeral Home in Ina, and from noon until the funeral hour on Tuesday at the church.
Mr. Sweetin was born on Sept. 1, 1939, in Jefferson County, the son of Orvel O. and Alberta (Odle) Sweetin.
He married Gracie (Turnage) Sweetin on Nov. 1, 1974, in Blytheville, Ark. She survives.
He was a real estate broker for United Country-Southern Realty in Marion.
In addition to his wife, Gracie, he is survived by his mother, Alberta Sweetin of Ina; two sons, Scott Sweetin and Steve Sweetin, both of Springfield; one stepson, Kenneth McGill of Bakersfield, Calif; one daughter, Shelley Sweetin of Springfield; two stepdaughters, Sheila Manning of Benton and Diane Newberry of Whittington; ten grandchildren; one sister, Kay Slamans and husband Tom of Aurora.
His father, Orvel O. Sweetin and one brother, Jack Sweetin preceded him in death.
