CARL "CAT" GUNTER
West Frankfort - Carl "Cat" Gunter, 61, died at 10:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 1, 2001 in Carbondale Memorial Hospital.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 4, in the Union Funeral Home, West Frankfort, with the Rev. Robert Wininger officiating. Burial will be in the Denning Cemetery and friends may call after 6 p.m. Tuesday to the funeral home.
Mr. Gunter was born in West Frankfort on Nov. 12, 1939, the son of David and Grace (Levertt) Gunter.
He was a member of the Church of God in Christopher.
Survivors include three sons, David Gunter, Germany, Gene Gunter and wife Roxanne of Benton, Carl and wife Sara Gunter of Thompsonville; daughter, Pam Bourland of Florida; stepson Oley Green West Frankfort, stepdaughter, Katherine Sneed, West Frankfort; eight grandchildren; four brothers, Dean Gunter, West Frankfort, Bennie Gunter, Herrin, William Gunter, Thompsonville, Eddie Gunter, Percy; sister, Virginia Murphy, West Frankfort; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Ed and Cathy Braden of Benton, and Pegy Green, West Frankfort.
JANE COOK
Benton - Jane Cook, 92, died at 3:50 a.m. on Monday, June 10, 2002, in her home.
Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 13, in the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home, Benton, with the Rev. Dale Carson officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton. Friends may call afer 9 a.m. on Thursday to the funeral home.
Mrs. Cook was born in England on Feb. 7, 1910, the daughter of John and Jane (McNulty) Loftus. She married Robert Cook on March 15, 1929. He preceded her in death.
A retired LPN, she had worked at UMWA Hospital in West Frankfort, Moore Hospital and the Franklin Hospital, both of Benton.
She was a member of the First Christian Church in Benton.
Survivors include one granddaughter, Paula Webb of Benton; two great-granddaughters, Alissa Webb and Julie Miller; one great-great-granddaughter, Michelle Miller; one stepgrandson, William Lehman of Atlanta Ga.; three brothers, Bernard "Barney" Loftus and wife Dorothy of Arizona, William Loftus of West Frankfort, Raymond Loftus of Arizona; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Emma Lou Leming and George and Rose Savko.
Mrs. Cook was preceded in death by her parents; husband, one daughter, Alice Jane Lehman; son-in-law, Stanley L. Lehman; three sisters, Elizabeth Dunlap, Millicent Mack and Mary Hanson; an infant brother and three other brothers, John Loftus, Joseph Loftus and Louis Loftus; and two step-grandchildren, Kathleen Gobin and Lester Lehman.
For those who wish, memorials may be made to the First Christian Church in Benton, or to the American Cancer Society and will be accepted at the funeral home at any time.
BRADLEY WHITTIER BENNETT
Bonnie - Bradley Whittier Bennett, 40, of Bonnie, died on Monday, June 10, 2002, due to injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 13, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton with the Rev. Philip Ingle officiating. Burial will be in the Liberty-Ridlen Cemetery, Ewing. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Bennett was born April 20, 1962, in Benton, the son of Kingsley V. and Cathy (Whittier) Bennett.
He was employed as a car salesman at Marion Ford. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting with his children, brothers, and father. He was a loving father to his three children. He was a member of the Liberty Missionary Baptist Church, Ewing.
He is survived by three children, Brandon, Lauren, and Brock Bennett of Benton; parents, Kingsley and Cathy Bennett of Ewing; two brothers, Jeffrey and wife Lori Bennett of Ewing, and Mitch Bennett of Benton; niece and nephew, Jordan and Alex Bennett of Ewing; paternal grandmother, Helen Hampton of Benton; and several aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Bradley W. Bennett Children's Trust Fund and will be accepted at the funeral home.
FREDA ANN BARBER
Sesser - Freda Ann Barber, 94, died Wednesday, Sept. 18, 2002, at Shawnee Christian Nursing Center, Herrin.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, in the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser, with the Rev. Jack Wolfe officiating. Burial will be in Horse Prairie Cemetery in Sesser. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20, at the funeral home.
Mrs. Barber was born Jan. 26, 1908 in Barren Township, Franklin County, the daughter of Harve V. and Maggie (Johnston) Atchison. She was one of eight children who were born and raised on the Atchison farm.
She attended Hazel Dell Grade School, Sesser Community High School, and was a member of Horse Prairie Baptist Church in Sesser.
As a young woman Mrs. Barber moved to Jackson, Michigan. to seek employment. She worked for the Sparks-Whithington Co. for almost 25 years.
She married Emmett Michael O'Sullivan and made her home in Michigan for many years. Mr. O'Sullivan died in 1948, and a few years later she married Frederick Barber.
After Mr. Barber's death in 1973 she moved back to Franklin County and purchased a home in Sesser. She worked part-time at the Custard Stand in Sesser, until failing health forced her to retire.
She was active in the Sesser Senior Citizens and a member of the Eastern Star in Sesser.
She is survived by five children, Robert and Lucille Kirkpatrick of Sesser, Phyllis and Carl Corona of Glen Ellyn, Patrick Michael and Victoria O'Sullivan of Chicago, Terrence Dennis O'Sullivan of Ann Arbor, Mich., Susan Barber O'Connell, Ann Arbor, Mich.; ten grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Chesta Sulcer and Sadie and husband Don Lewis, all of Sesser; many loving nieces, nephews and cousins; and a host of friends.
Mrs. Barber was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Jewell McVaigh and Buelah Hudson, three brothers, Willie, James and Kent Atchison and two grandchildren, Joseph and Maria Corona.
She was a beloved and beautiful lady and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
CORDAH ROUSSEL
Phoenix - Cordah Roussel, 58, died Sept. 21, 2000, at Mayo's Hospital in Phoenix, Ariz.
A licensed travel agent tour guide for foreign students and tourists, she had traveled extensively, but loved Arizona and moved to Phoenix in 1975. She was employed by Air Cargo Transit for several years.
There will be no service, as her wish was to be cremated and her remains taken to Sedona, Ariz.
Survivors include her son, Sheldon Williams of Granbury, Texas; her daughter Garcia of Albertville, Alabama; granddaughters Kristen and Kaitlyn of Alabama; friend Clarion Hudacko and Muffin of Phoenix, Az.; an aunt, Lucille Moore of Benton and cousins of Phoenix and Benton.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Louise Coker Doubelaire of Peoria, Loren Coker of Peoria and grandparents Pete and Addie Bauer of Benton.
DORIS F. HUTCHCRAFT
Thompsonville - Doris F. Hutchcraft, 78, formerly of McLeansboro, died at 9:55 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2000, in Franklin Hospital, Benton.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 26, in the Gholson Funeral Home, with the Rev. Robert Refried officiating. Burial will be in the Veterans Section of the I.O.O.F. Cemetery in McLeansboro. Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hutchcraft was born on Aug. 15, 1922, in Wayne County, the daughter of Victor and Nellie (Smith) Hall. On Dec. 10, 1940, she married Johnie M. Hutchcraft, who died in 1988.
She was a homemaker, and a member of the First United Methodist Church. She also belonged to the Hamilton County Live and Learn Club, the McLeansboro American Legion Auxiliary, and the DAV Auxiliary of Centralia.
She is survived by one son, Stanley and wife Dixie Hutchcraft of Reed, Ky.; two daughters, Carol and husband Ronnie Shelton of Wayne City, Diane and husband Mike Smith of Thompsonville; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren; and a stepmother, Goldie Hall of McLeansboro.
She was also preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Lloyd, Glen and Delmar Hall and one sister, Lois McCague.
BEULA F. CRAWFORD
Oberlin, Ohio - Beula F. Crawford, 97, formerly of the Christopher area, died at the Welcome Nursing Home, Oberlin, Ohio, on Monday, Oct. 23, 2000.
Graveside services will be held in the Mulkeytown Cemetery on Thursday at 10 a.m. with the Rev. Mark Slatte officiating. There will be no visitation. The Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher, is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Crawford was born in Benton, on Nov. 3, 1902, the daughter of Ralph and Rosa (Skeen) Adams. She was married to Henery Crawford, who died on Sept. 4, 1974.
She was a homemaker and of the Methodist faith.
Survivors include one son, Gerald Crawford of Oberlin, Ohio; a daughter of Rosemary Fetter in Baltimore, Maryland; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Clayton of Carpentersville.
MILDRED C. THOMPSON
Christopher - Mildred C. Thompson, 79, died at Severin's Intermediate Care Nursing Home at 8:15 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 23, 2000.
Services will be held on Thursday, Oct. 26, at 11:00 a.m. in the Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher. Burial will be in the Mulkeytown Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday to the funeral home.
Mrs. Thompson was born on Jan. 23, 1921, the daughter of Wayman Dan and Louie (Montgomery) Webb. She was married to Delbert W. Thompson, on July 26, 1941. He survives.
She was a homemaker.
In addition to her husband, Delbert, she is survived by three sons, Larry Thompson, O'Fallon, Mo., Delbert Thompson of Christopher, and Jeffery Thompson, Southern Illinois; four grandchildren; one brother, Tinsley Webb of Princeton, Ind.; one sister, Rosemary Blankenship of St. Louis, Mo.
WALTER GALE HASTEN
Valier - Walter Gale Hasten, 85, died at 4:55 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, 2000 in Franklin Hospital, Benton.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 4, at the Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher, with the Rev. Harl Ray Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Valier. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Sunday to the funeral home.
Mr. Hasten was born on Sept. 19, 1915, in Carbondale, the son of Arley and Ella Hasten. He was married to Lillie Fern (Giacoma) Hasten, who died July 29, 1990.
He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include one daughter, Jacquelyn Kasper, Country Club Hill; Richard G. Hasten of Valier; grandchildren, William Gale Murry, Mt. Vernon; Angela Robinson, O'Fallon; a dear sister-in-law, Mrs. Gene Prudent of Zeigler; halfbrother, Arley D. Hasten, West Frankfort.
WANDA L. HAYSE
Benton - Wanda L. Hayse, 76, died at 8:25 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 1, 2000 at the Franklin Skilled Care Unit.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 3, at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Gene Outland officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday to the funeral home.
Mrs. Hayse was born in West Frankfort on Dec. 19, 1923, the daughter of William T. and Media (Newman) Conwell.
She was married on Dec. 7, 1941 to J.B. Hayse, who died on Sept. 18, 2000.
She is suvived by several nieces and nephews, and by a dear friend, Marie Walker of Ewing.

Chicago - Terry R. Smothers, 57, died at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000 at St. Francis Hospital, Evanston.
