LENA (HUNGATE) LIGON

Ina - Lena (Hungate) Ligon, 97, a former Ina resident, died at 10:39 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2003 at the Countryside Manor, West Frankfort.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2003, at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral. Burial will be in the Kirk Cemetery, Ina. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Ligon was born on March 20, 1905, in Hamilton County, the daughter of Dorous W. Hungate and Oria (Johnson) Hungate. She married Guy O. Ligon on Aug. 1, 1923 in McLeansboro. He preceded her in death on Feb. 21, 1996.

She taught grades K-4 for 42 years in the Benton Community, Ina Community and other rural school systems. She retired from the Bethel Grade School. She was a 73-year member of the Ina Freewill Baptist Church and faithfully attended church services at the Franklin Skilled Care Nursing Unit in recent years.

Surviving relatives include two nephews, Ken Hungate and wife Elva, Benton, Walter B. Burnett and wife Dixie, Lom Poc, Calif., and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents, two brothers, Gus Hungate, Robert T. Hungate, Jr., a sister, Mabel (Hungate) Burnett, and a special niece, Martha Jane (Burnett) Turnage.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Benton Ministerial Alliance and will be accepted at the funeral home.

ELVIE THURMAN HILL

Benton - Elvie Thurman Hill , 61, died at 12:48 p.m. on Monday, March 31, 2003 in the Franklin Hospital, Benton.

Arrangements are pending at the Poulson Funeral Home, Benton.

NARCISSUS A. CUNNINGHAM

Benton - Narcissus A. Cunningham, 92, died at 11:55 a.m. March 31, 2003, at Mt. Vernon Countryside Manor, Mt.Vernon.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 4 (Block V) in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery, with the Rev. Hazel Andros officiating. Memorials may be made to the Mt.Vernon Countryside Manor, 606 N. Fairfield Rd., Mt. Vernon, IL 62864.

Mrs. Cunningham was born on Nov. 26, 1910, the daughter of Wlliam and Rado (Summers) Biggs. She was married to William H. Cunningham who preceded her in death in 1975. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include one daughter Lana Duenweg and husband Paul, Concord, Calif; two grandchildren, Terri Briard and husband Scott, Pleasant Hill, Calif, Shelley Lyons and husband Sean of Martinez, Calif; one great-grandchild, Brandon Briard of Pleasant Hill, Caif.

Her parents, husband, five brothers, Theodore, Leo, Otto, Osco, and two year old Quincy Biggs and three sisters, Sadie Wingo, Altha Biggs and Lonetta Parkman all preceded her in death.

Poulson Funeral Home in Benton is in charge of arrangements.

ELVIE 'THURMAN' HILL

Benton - Elvie "Thurman" Hill died at 12:48 p.m. on Monday, March 31, 2003, in the Franklin Hospital, Benton.

Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, in the First Baptist Church, West City, with the Rev. Bert Mitchell officiating. Mr. Hill requested cremation. There will be no visitation.

Mr. Hill was born April 22, 1941, in Red Oak, Okla., the son of Charles and Lilly (Bates) Hill. He was married to Bettie (Anderson) Hill. She survives.

He was an employee of Henderson Trucking and was of the Baptist faith.

In addition to his wife, Bettie, he is survived by two sons, Justin Hill and Charles Hill, both of Benton; two daughters, Danielle Hill of Benton and Christine Moore and husband Billy of Udall, Kan.

Poulson Funeral Home in Benton is in charge of arrangements.

GERRY McLAIN

Valier - Gerry McLain, 54, died at 6:40 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002 at home.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher, with the Rev. Harl Ray Lewis officiating. Burial will be in the Herrin City Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday to the funeral home.

Gerry was born on Nov. 7, 1948, in Herrin, the daughter of George and Jewell (Sellars) Shamborn.

She was retired from Franklin-Williamson Human Services where she was a supervisor.

She was a member of the 1st Baptist Church in Valier.

Survivors include one son, Chris and wife Tiffany Emery of Valier; one daughter, Julie Jo and husband Brad Hammonds of Christopher; four grandchildren, Christopher and Madison Mae Emery, Hannah and Haley Hammonds; one sister, Linda Chamness and husband Robert of Marion.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Jo Ann Dagner and Carol Bailey.

Memorials may be made to Southern Illinois Hospice and will be accepted at the funeral home.

HARRY JOSEPH MAZAR

Benton - Harry Joseph Mazar, 67, died at 7:35 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2002, at the VA Medical Centerr in Marion.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Benton, with Father Joseph Trapp officiating. Burial, with military rites conducted by the Benton american Legion and VFW Posts will be in the Masonic & Odd Fellows Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, to the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton. a scripture and prayer service will be at 7:30 p.m. today, Wednesday, at the funeral home.

Mr. Mazar was born June 25, 1935, in Benton, the son of Tom and Anniela (Gwiazda) Mazar.

He was a veteran and a member of the American Legion Post 280 in Benton.

A watch case repairman, he also repaired jewelry.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the National Association of Watch and Clock Collectors, and the American Rifleman Association.

He is survived by two brothers, Stanley Wyskiel and Tom Mazar, and three sisters, Josephine Wyskiel, Betty Lane and Patricia Mazar.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Mary Louise Wyskiel.

ANTHONY MARK 'MITCH' MITCHELL

Zeigler - Anthony Mark "Mitch" Mitchell, 94, Zeigler, died at 2:55 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002 at the Shawnee Christian Nursing Center in Herrin.

Funeral arrangements are pending at Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler.

MARY E. DAVIS

Sesser - Mary E. Davis, 78, died in her daughter's home with her family, at 3:12 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 5, in the First Baptist Church, Sesser, with Brother Woody Wilson officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may call after 6 p.m. Wednesday to the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home, Sesser, and from 10 a.m. until time of service at the church on Thursday.

Mrs. Davis was born on Aug. 15, 1924, in Sesser, the daughter of William (Bill) Rogers and Grace Day Short. She was married to Robert C. Davis on June 4, 1982. He died Feb. 16, 2001.

She retired as a secretary for W.I.C. in 1996, and was a member of the First Baptist Church of Sesser and the Eastern Star.

Survivors include one daughter, Karen and husband Dan Romani of Sesser; nine grandchildren, Mike Romani of Sesser,Valerie and Chad Miller of Sesser, Kendra Romani of Sesser, Jeff and Dee Allen of Florissant, Mo. Lindsay Allen of Benton, Heather Laur of Sesser, Derek and Jill Allen of Hawaii, Bethaney Allen of Sesser, Booke Allen of Sesser; seven great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by two sons, Bill and Lanny Allen.

Donations may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or the American Cancer Society. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

RONALD PAUL PINKHAM

Aurora, Colo. - Ronald Paul Pinkham, age 62 died at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 3, 2000, at home with Jesus and parents, the Rev. & Mrs. Paul Pinkham, former Benton residents.

Ron succumbed to pancreatic cancer.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Gilda (Schwartz) Pinkham, two sons and two grandchildren.

He is also survived by sisters Janie Loeschner of Florissant, Mo. and Sondra Gann of Bridgeton, Mo.

Interment will be in Colorado.

REV. CLARENCE O.TAYLOR

De Soto, Missouri - The Rev. Clarence O. Taylor, 89, died Monday, Aug. 7, 2000, in De Soto.

Services will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the Mahn Chapel, De Soto, with the Revs. Lavey and Rayls officiating. Visitation is today from 3 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, Sesser.

Rev. Taylor was born on June 21, 1911, in Sesser, the son of Eligah A. and Nellie (Boyd) Taylor.

He was married to Geneverett L. (Dorrough) Taylor on May 6, 1931, in Sesser. She survives.

He was the clergy for the De Soto Church of God and many others, and had retired as a welder for the Mo. Pacific Railroad. He was a member of the International Gospel Assembly.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, David Lee and wife Karen Taylor of Cedar Hill, Mo.; two daughters, Marcella and husband Roy Welshon, Jean Ann and husband Jesse Hoyt, both of De Soto; one sister, Clara Hargrove, Cahokia; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Marvin Fred Taylor; one sister, Ruby Curry, four brothers, Richard, Alvie, Arlie, and Noah Taylor.

WANDA REA SCHLEICHER LITTLEPAGE

Johnston City - Wanda Rea Schleicher Littlepage, formerly of Benton, died at 11 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000.

Arrangements are pending at the Murman-Wilson Funeral Home, Johnston City.

TROY E. DOTY SR.

Benton - Troy E. Doty Sr., 84, died Tuesday, May 27, 2003, at the home of his daughter Debbie Mandrell east of West Frankfort.

Mr. Doty was born in Benton on April 6, 1919 the son of W. Troy Doty and Bessie (Taylor) Doty. He was married to Flora (Bray) Doty, and she preceded him in death on May 2, 2002.

He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Debbie and Tom Mandrell of West Frankfort, and Nikki & Bob Gorby of St. Petersburg, Fla., and a son, Troy E. Doty II of Christopher; six grandchildren, Justin Lipsey, Shaun Mandrell, Danielle Mandrell, Rikki and husband Ray Bonthron, Trent and Valerie Terry and Leslie and Richard Stewart; and three great-grandchildren, William and Stephanie Bonthron and Daryn Morris.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Flora and infant twins.

Mr. Doty was a member of the Full Gospel Church in Buckner. For more than 50 years he was the owner of Doty Plumbing & Heating in Benton, and a member of the Local Plumbers & Pipefitters Union. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy. For many years, he and his wife were very active as antique dealers.

Funeral services for Mr. Doty will be held Saturday, May 31, at 11 a.m. in the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home with Pastor Bernadine Caldwell Webb officiating. Burial will be in the Masonic and Odd Fellows Cemetery in Benton with Military Rites being conducted by the Benton American Legion .

Visitation for Mr. Doty will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home.
