MICHAEL POWENSKI JR.
Sesser - Michael Powenski Jr, 78, of Sesser and Kalkaska, Mich., died at the Franklin Hospital Emergency Room at 6:37 a.m. Monday, Sept. 22, 2003.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, in the Brayfield Funeral Home, Sesser, with father Steven Poole officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery. Friends may call from 10 a.m. until time of service to the funeral home.
Mr. Powenski was born on Dec. 19, 1924, in Benton, the son of Michael and Helen (Shibovich) Powenski. He worked for the Shell Oil Company for 40 years.
He was married to Caroline (Rozenski) Powenski in Sept. of 1950. She survives. A Navy veteran of World War II, he was affiliated with the St. Mary of the Wood Church in Kalkaska, Mich.
A lifetime member of the VFW, he was also a member of the National Rifle Association and a member of American Legion in Kalkaska.
He loved hunting, fishing, gardening, woodworking and reading.
In addition to his wife, Caroline, he is survived by two sons, Larry and wife Kathleen Powenski of Slaughter, Louisiana, David and Sheryl Powenski and children, Zachary, Sarah, Andrew of Walnut Hill; and brothers, John Powenski and Stanley Powenski, both of Chicago, Louis Powenski of Herrin and Marion Powenski, Benton.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Leo, and two sisters, Rose and Ann.
TIMOTHY ALLEN BENSON
MARSHA K. (JONES) BENSON
Mulkeytown - Timothy Allen and Marsha K. (Jones) Benson, of Fox Mulkeytown died Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at the Sparta Community Hospital as a result of a motorcycle accident on Schuline Road south of Sparta.
Timothy Allen Benson, 34, was born Oct. 5, 1968, in Herrin to Kenneth L. and Peggy Lou (Summers) Benson. He married Marsha K. Jones July 4, 2003 in Gatlinburg, Tenn.
Tim is survived by his father, Kenneth Benson of Royalton; a son, Tyler Benson of Peoria; a stepdaughter, Jenna Shadowens of Mulkeytown; a stepson, Keith Jones of Sesser; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Kendra and Steve Connor of Winslow, Ind., and Teresa and Danny Morgan of Johnston City; and a brother, Matt Benson of Roswell, Ga.
His mother, Peggy Lou Benson, and a brother, Kenneth L. Benson, Jr., preceded him in death.
Tim worked as a Set-up Technician at Continental Tire of North America in Mt. Vernon. He was a member of the Fin and Feather Club in Freeman Spur and Ducks Unlimited.
Marsha K. (Jones) Benson, 33, was born March 14, 1970, in Du Quoin to Larry and Lucille (Watson) Jones.
She is survived by her parents of Zeigler; a daughter, Jenna Shadowens of Mulkeytown; a stepson, Tyler Benson of Peoria; her maternal grandmother, Irma Watson of Zeigler; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Shirley Jones of Mulkeytown, and three nephews, Matthew, Aaron and Cameron Jones of Mulkeytown; and her paternal grandfather, Gene Jones of Mulkeytown.
She was preceded in death by her paternal grandmother, Elnora Jones, and an uncle, Danny Watson.
Marsha had worked with her brother and father as the comptroller at Percussion Bit and Tool in Benton. She had worked at Herrin Security Bank.
Funeral services for Tim and Marsha will be held at 1 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 25, 2003, at the First Christian Church in Christopher with Brother Donald Wright officiating. Burial will be at Zeigler Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church and after 9 a.m. Thursday until the hour of the services at the church.
Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler is in charge of the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Tim and Marsha may be made to the "Tim and Marsha Benson Memorial Fund" for their children at the Herrin Security Bank. CARL EDWARD LOUCKS
Sesser - Carl Edward Loucks, 75, of Sesser went to be with his Lord and Savior at 4:37 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at his home.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser, with Brother Woody Wilson officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser.
Carl was born Sept. 18, 1928, in Scheller, the son of Emro and Clara (Mobray) Loucks. He was united in marriage to Anna Mae (Zettler) on Nov. 19, 1949.
Prior to his death, he was a deacon and Sunday school superintendent at White Oak Baptist Church in Scheller.
Throughout the years, Carl was employed at various places. He was a lifelong farmer, gardener and family man. He loved being with his family and spending lots of time with his little buddy, Presty.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, one daughter, Doris Worley and husband Randall, and one son, Gene Loucks, all of Scheller; granddaughters, Tammy Launius and husband John of Sesser, Andrea Worley of Scheller, Chanda Loucks of Mt. Vernon, and Amanda Gajewski and husband Eric of Scheller; grandsons, Brent Loucks and wife Becky, and Bryce Worley, all of Scheller; and great-grandsons Preston Launius, Seth Loucks and Expecting Quinn Gajewski.
He is also survived by one sister, Mary Tennyson and husband Herman; three brothers, Carson and wife Nellie, Dean and wife Barb, and Cliff and wife Nancy; sisters-in-law Loretta Gladson, Viola Dublo, Edna Morgan and the late Ira; brothers-in-law, George and Wilma Zettler, Robert and Helen Zettler; very special friends, Jim and Eleanor Lou Painter; and several nephews and nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters, Helen Loucks, Dorothy Panzier, Velma Robinson and Ruth Zettler, and two brothers, Howard and James.
VIRGINIA R. DOSS
Salem - Virginia R. Doss, 65, of Salem died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at the Salem Township Hospital.
A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Rogers-Atkins Funeral Home in Salem. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Virginia Doss Memorial Nursing Scholarship.
Mrs. Doss was born Feb. 5, 1938, in Franklin County, the daughter of Carl Scott and Ruth (Summers) McClerren. She married Ben Doss Dec. 29, 1956, in Thompsonville.
A homemaker, Mrs. Doss was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her mother of Benton; one son, Rick and wife Connie Doss of Indianapolis; three daughters, Melanie Kozelichki of South Pittsburg, Tenn., Carla and husband Mike Hooe of Iuka, and Anne Doss of Knoxville, Tenn.; eight grandchildren, Jacob, Jessica and A.J. Kozelichki, Holly and Ben Hooe, and Bailey, Nicholas and Miranda Doss; and one sister, Peggy Taylor of Paducah, Ky.
She was preceded in death by her father, her husband and one son-in-law, Jim Kozelichki.
ANNA MAE GROGAN
Christopher - Anna Mae Grogan, 67, of Christopher died at 4:20 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 21, 2003, at Memorial Hospital in Carbondale.
A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2003, at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher and will be officiated by the Rev. Don Knox. Burial will be in the Mulkeytown Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Grogan was born Sept. 10, 1936, in Mulkeytown, the daughter of Ennis and Mary (Pinkham) Furlow. She was married to Lester Grogan, and he survives.
Mrs. Grogan was a former volunteer at the Christopher Elementary School. She also worked for the school for the deaf in Marion. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Royalton; additionally, she was the former treasurer of the Eagles in Christopher, former treasurer of Izaak Walton Club, former volunteer for the Red Cross, Girl and Boy Scouts leader for many years, and was a former EMT who organized ambulance service in Christopher.
She is also survived by her children, Dwayne and wife Carmen Grogan of Christopher, Lora Ann Grogan of Christopher, and Mary Lou and husband Benjamin Harrison of Mulkeytown; six grandchildren, Jonathan and wife Toni Grogan, Deann and husband Seth Knox, Lester Grogan, Daryel and husband Seth Phillips, and Elizabeth Harrison; three great-grandchildren, Tailey, Tate Grogan and Garrison.
Her parents, one sister and two brothers preceded her in death.
EVELYN HERBERT
Benton - Edna Evelyn Herbert, 88, died at 5:25 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at the Franklin Hospital in Benton.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 24, at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with Rev. James Cottle and the Rev. Michael Davis officiating. Mrs. Herbert was born in Benton July 18, 1915, the daughter of Charles and Martha Ann (Browning) McDonald.
She married Henry Johnson Herbert on Feb. 1, 1935 and he preceded her in death on March 25, 1976.
She attended the First Church of the Nazarene in Benton, was active in Bible school and belonged to the Daughters of Dorcas.
Mrs. Herbert enjoyed making baby quilts, and has made and given away dozens of quilts over the years.
Survivors include two daughters, Jean Furlow and husband Bill of Christopher, Judy Doxsie and husband Kirby of Benton; one son, Joe Herbert and wife Carolynn of West Frankfort; six grandchildren, Pam Boner, Rodney Furlow and wife Karen Kay, Denise Sloan and husband Rodney, Scott Herbert, Toni Luster and husband Jim, Jamie Conley and husband Jim; nine great-grandchildren, Katie Furlow, Lilly Furlow, Brittney Boner, Alexandra Boner, Marissa Sloan, Matthew Sloan, Noah Luster, Brendan Luster, Brody Conley; two sisters-in-law, Opal McDonald and Geneva McDonald of Benton; several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, three brothers and one sister.
ROBERT TROGOLO
Christopher - Robert Trogolo, 51, died Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, in his home.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 23, in the Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher, with Father Steven Poole officiating. Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. this evening to the funeral home.
Mr. Trogolo was born on Nov. 25, 1952, in Christopher, the son of Peppino and Mary (Vargo) Trogolo, Christopher. His parents survive.
He was retired from Stotlar-Herrin Lumber and the City of Christopher.
He was a member of the National Guard in West Frankfort and a former member of the Christopher Fire Department.
In addition to his parents, he is also survived by one brother, Joe Trogolo of Plano, Texas.
ANN MARQUIS
Benton - Annetta Mae Marquis, 62, Benton, died at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2003 at the St. Mary's/Good Samaritan RHC in Mt. Vernon.
Ann was born in Marion on Jan. 10, 1941, the daughter of James O. and Virginia P. (Pillow) Howerton.
Ann was married to James Marquis and he survives.
She was employed at the State Bank of Whittington in Benton.
She was of the Lutheran faith.
Ann is survived by her husband James Marquis, Benton; daughter Cynthia Evanson, Elgin; two sons Brett Dieckman, Elgin and Terry Zimmerman, Mt. Vernon; two step-daughters Theresa Saunders, Elgin and Sheila Caza, Elgin; grandchildren Brian, Trisha, Patrick, Timothy, Zachary and Aliya; step-grandchildren Lindsey, Telena and Nicholas; two brothers James "Lynn" Howerton, Mt. Vernon and William "Mac" Howerton, Spring, Texas; one step-brother Mike McClendon, Lake Charles, La.; two step-sisters Cyrilene Hicks, Carterville and Sharon King, Benton; several nieces and nephews.
Ann was preceded in death by her parents.
It was Ann's wishes to be cremated.
Memorial graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Maplewood Cemetery in Marion. The Morton and Johnston Funeral Home in Benton is in charge of arrangements.
BRADY P. ROBERTSON
Benton - Brady P. Robertson, 93, died at 4:15 p.m. Monday, Sept. 15, 2003, at the Severin Intermediate Care Center, Benton.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 18, 2003, at the Phillips Cemetery. Those attending are asked to go directly to the cemetery. Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Brady was born on Aug. 29, 1910, in Ewing Township, the son of Pleasant Hawkins and Sadie Robertson. He married the former Josephine Rigo on April 22, 1933 and she survives.
Mr. Robertson was a farmer all of his life.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Marian Palmgren and husband Charles, Stone Mountain, Ga.; two sons, Bill Robertson and wife Delores, Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Scott Robertson and wife Pam, Mt. Vernon; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mr. Robertson was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and four sisters.
Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
