DONALD OTTO WEST

Benton - Donald Otto West, 85, died at his home at 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003.

Services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, in the Dodge Grove Cemetery, Mattoon, with Dr. E. E. Elliot officiating. Local arrangements were by the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser.

Mr. West was born on Nov. 9, 1917, in Scheller, the son of Charlie and Elsie (Davis) West.

He was married to the former Dorothy Marie Barnett, who died in 1982. He was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Marie Mattess and husband Harold of Mattoon; several nieces and nephews; two grandchildren; a brother, Darvin West of Humboldt and sister, Margie Risley of Benton.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was also preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters.

MARSHA KAY (TATE) HOOD

Magnolia, Texas - Marsha "Kay" Hood, 53, went to be with God, Fri. Aug. 8, 2003, in Houston, Texas.

She was born on June 17, 1950, in Christopher was the daughter of Johnny and Betty (Pemberton) Tate of West Frankfort, formerly of Benton.

Kay is survived by one son, Robert Richard of Cambria; one brother, John Tate and wife Diana of Marion; two sisters, Linda Perry and husband Dennis Sr. of Addieville and Jean Tate of Clinton, MI; two nieces; three nephews and their wives; two great-nieces; three great-nephews and one baby niece or nephew-to-be; many family members, friends and neighbors, in Texas and Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Sara Beth Richard, by her parents and by her grandparents of Benton, William and Jannie (Clark) Pemberton and Ransom and Verdilla (Todd) Tate.

Ms. Hood was an adjustable hospital style, bed salesperson for Kraft-Matic Beds. She received many awards and accolades in that capacity. She belonged to the Baptist Church. She was an excellent seamstress, an avid reader, and gardner. She loved her son and her way of life, as well as her two pet cats and all animals. She prayed for world peace.

Memorials may be made to her favorite charity, "Free Again Wild Life!" or to the donors choice.

Close friends who will miss Kay are Ronnie and Jeannie Newton of Cypress, Tx, Elaine and Yvonne of Scottsdale, Az. and many bosses and co-worker friends at the Kraft-Matic company.

EDITH G. BOKER

Christopher - Edith G. Boker, 97, of Christopher died Thursday, Aug. 14, 2003, at the Severin Nursing Home in Benton.

A graveside service officiated by the Rev. David McConnell will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Valier. The Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation; everyone is asked to meet at the cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a favorite charity.

Mrs. Boker was born Oct. 1, 1905, in Herrin, the daughter of William Arthur and Effie Goessman Parkerson. She was married to John Hobbs, and later to Alonzo Boker; both husbands preceded her in death, as did her parents.

A retired homemaker, Mrs. Boker was of the Protestant faith.

Surviving are two sons, Glenn Hobbs of Christopher and John Hobbs of Sebring, Fla. One son, Donald, preceded her in death. Four brothers and four sisters also preceded her in death.

JAMES MICHAEL DEWITT

Zeigler - James Michael DeWitt, 38, Zeigler, died at 12:17 a.m. Mon-day, Aug. 11, 2003, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

James was born Dec. 30, 1964, in Herrin, to James W. and Linda Rae (Wiles) DeWitt.

He is survived by his parents of Zeigler; a brother, Robert Linden DeWitt of Benton; a sister and brother-in-law, Tammie and Joe Nauman of Zeigler; six nieces and nephews, Bobby A. and Steven DeWitt of Benton; Christian DeWitt of Zeigler, David, Amanda and Dillon Nauman of Zeigler and an uncle and his wife, Bob and Francis DeWitt of Georgetown, Texas.

James was of the Protestant faith and enjoyed computer science. He was a 1982 graduate of Zeigler-Royalton High School and a member of the Z-R football team that won the Class 1A state championship that year.

Memorial services for Mr. DeWitt will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, 2003, at Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler with Brother Donald Wright officiating. There will be no visitation.

STANLEY L. SHIBOVICH

Hinsdale - Stanley L. Shibovich, 89, a former Benton resident, died at the Manor Care in Westmont on Aug. 12, 2003.

He was born on Feb. 13, 1914, in Benton. He was a member of St. Isaac Jogues Church in Hinsdale.

He was the beloved husband of Mary, fond father of Lee (Susan) and the late Allen, stepgrandfather of Erin and Steven, brother-in-law of Julie Galan, C.S.J.; brother of four brothers and sisters.

He was an Air Force veteran of World War II.

Services will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Elliston Funeral Home, 60 South Grant and First Streets in Hinsdale. Visitation is Friday, Aug. 15, at the funeral home from 3 until 9 p.m. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Justice.

VICKI PERRY

Christopher - Vicki Perry, 57, of Christopher died at 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, 2003, at home.

A funeral service is scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18, at the St. Andrew Catholic Church in Christopher, officiated by Father Steven Poole. Burial will be in St. Andrew Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 17, at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher.

Mrs. Perry was born June 30, 1946, in Christopher, the daughter of Dick and Princie (Reynolds) Minor. She was married to Paul Perry on June 17, 1968, in Christopher. Mr. Perry died May 7, 2003.

Mrs. Perry was an employee of Cousin Fred's in Benton. She was a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church in Christopher. Also, she attended Southern Illinois University, was a former township supervisor from 1992-96, public relations with Belleville Diocese, past secretary to Chicago Providence President, and vice president of Catholic Daughters in Du Quoin.

She is survived by both parents; children Pat and Lori Perry of Waltonville; grandchildren, Kyle P. Perry, Kaleigh Perry and Ian Perry; stepchildren, Hanna Gartner of Mulkeytown and Kyle Mitchell of Benton; and brother, Jeff Minor of Christopher.

RUBY MAE DIXON

Sesser - Ruby Mae Dixon, 85, died at 3:49 p.m. on Monday, August 11, 2003, in St. Mary's/Good Samaritan Regional Health Center, Mt. Vernon.

Services will be held at 11 a. m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at the First United Methodist Church in Sesser with Pastor David Morgan and the Rev. Jack Wolfe officiating. Burial will be in the Maple Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Thursday until time of service at the church.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First United Methodist Church of Sesser.

Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Dixon was born on May 20, 1918, in Glen Rogers, W. V., to Jesse J. and Nada (McGinnis) Davis.

She married Stanley Scott Dixon on Nov. 19, 1934. He preceded her in death on June 28, 1972.

Mrs. Dixon was a homemaker, and a charter member of the First United Methodist Church in Sesser.

Survivors include two children and their spouses, Vivian and Deon Seiler of Sesser, Joseph Scott and Joyce Dixon of Mt. Vernon; five grandchildren, Timothy Dixon of Hudson, Ohio, Marcus Seiler of Sesser, De Mara Delbene of Sesser, Bobby Dixon of Roselle and Ilana Ganswindt of Milwaukee, Wis.; ten great-grandchildren; one brother, Milton Davis of Lancaster, Pa.; and one sister, Lucille Riffe of The Villages, Fla.

LILA GRUNER

Carbondale - Lila Gruner, 75, died at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 12, 2003, at the Herrin Hospital.

Graveside services were held at 11 a. m. Wednesday in the Murdale Gardens of Memory in Carbondale, with the Rev. Gary Farthing officiating. There was no visitation. The Gilbert Funeral Home of Christopher was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Gruner was born in Mulkeytown on May 21, 1928, the daughter of Allie and Pearl (Barnett) Price. She married Don Gruner who preceded her in death.

She was a retired beautician.

Survivors include one brother, John and wife Shirley Price of Valier; nieces and nephews, Johnny and Leslie Shovan, Joe and Debbie Shovan, Jane Biby, Glenn Price; several great nieces and nephews, Ann Bourland, Dorothy Browning, Jack Smith, Bob Smith, Donnie and Sandy Price.

In addition to her husband Don, she was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Olen and Everett Price, three sisters, Laura Shovan, Edna Barnfield and Elizabeth Smith.

DORIS B. BOWLIN

Sesser - Doris B. Bowlin joined the Lord on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2003.

She was a loving wife and mother and a friend to all she met.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Wendell Bowlin of Sesser; two daughters, Cheryl Ford and husband Lee of Columbia City, Relda Guthrie and husband Sam of Edgewood; three sons, Kenneth and wife Mary Lou Bowlin, Gary and wife Maxine Bowlin, Brian Bowlin; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; six sisters, Lawanda and Frank Fourez, Loretta Cain, Gladys and Ron Terry, Sharron Forgach, Judy and Patrick Patterson, Brenda and Tom Monti; two brothers, George and Charolett Evilsizer, Robert and Lorraine Evilsizer.

She was preceded in death by her father and mother, George L. and Goldie M. (Shover) Evilsizer.

She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials should be made to the 1st Apostolic Church of Sesser, where she was a member. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 13, at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser, with the Rev. Tom Loyd officiating. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Wednesday until service time, with burial to follow in the Harrison Cemetery, Buckner.

MINNIE M. MARLETT

Benton - Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. today, Mon. Aug. 11, 2003 in the Mulkeytown Cemetery for Minnie Marlett, 72. Brother Bennie Webb officiated. She died on Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at the home of her daughter in Buckner.

She was born on June 1, 1931, in Valier, the daughter of William and Gracie Meyers Eubanks.

Survivors include her children, Carmen Williams of Du Quoin, Robert Hanner of Benton, Patsy Larson, Buckner, Lloyd Webb, Macedonia, William Webb, Macedonia, Glenda Isacs, Benton, Viola Edwards, Benton, Olga Marie Easley, Benton, Frankie James Martin, Anna, Roy Wayne Eubanks, Benton, Frankie Jo Eubanks, Herrin, Stayce Key, Benton; several grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; one sister, Marge Tittle, Benton three brothers, Rutherford Eubanks of Christopher, Kenneth Paul Eubanks, Mo., Buster Eubanks, Buckner.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers and two sisters and two children, Frank Isac Key and Jay Elizabeth Webb.

HARVEY FRANCISETTI

Coello - Harvey Francisetti, 79, passed away at 9:08 p.m. Friday, Aug. 8, 2003, at Marshall Browning Hospital in Du Quoin.

He was born on July 31,1924, in Tamaroa, the son of James and Mary (Bianco) Francisetti. He was united in marriage to Rose Hampton Ramsey on Set. 20, 1975.

Survivors include his wife, Rose of Coello; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Greg and Diana Ramsey, Lees Summit, Mo., Gary Ramsey, Christopher, and Glen and Barb Ramsey of Kansas City, Mo.; nine grandchildren, Stephani and Heath Ramsey, Leslie Hacker, Kim Gilbert, Greg Ramsey Jr., Crystal and Christopher Ramsey, Kyle and Katelyn Ramsey and five great-grandchildren.

He retired in 1986 from Turco Manufacturing Co. in Du Quoin. He was a 50 year member of the Italian Lodge in Coello, a member of the West Franklin Historical District and Genealogical Society, and the Mulkeytown Area Historical Society.

He was a graduate of the CCHS Class of 1943 and was a member of the North City Village Board. Four years of his time he served as Mayor of the Village, and was a proud member of the Coello Dumpling Gang.

He was of the Catholic faith.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Gilbert Funeral Home, Christopher, with Father Steven Poole officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery. Visitation will be after 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the West Franklin Historical District and will be accepted at the funeral home.
