MARY RUTH (SWAN) YOUNGER

Marion - Mary Ruth (Swan) Younger, 88, of Marion, passed away at 7:25 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, at her home surrounded by her family.

Ruth, as she was known by, was born in Creal Springs on August 4, 1915, the daughter of Roy and Nora (Frick) Parson.

Early in her lifetime, Ruth attended Beauty School at Mt. Vernon. After completing her training she worked as a beautician for the next eight years in Mt. Vernon, until her marriage. After her marriage, she remained at home seeing to the needs of her family and home.

She was married twice during her lifetime, the first being to Melvin A. Swan on September 16, 1941, in Jackson, Mo., and together they shared over 37 years until his death came on Nov. 19, 1978. She remained a widow for nearly the next 14 years until she met Earnie Younger, while at a dance sponsored by the Marion Senior Citizens Center. Ruth and Earnie, were united in marriage on July 24, 1992, at Aldersgate United Methodist Church of Marion, and together they have shared the last twelve years together.

She was a lifetime member of Aldersgate United Methodist Church of Marion, where she was a member the choir for twenty-eight years. She also was a member of the Overcomers Sunday School Class of the church. Ruth loved to serve others and volunteered much of her time after her family was raised by becoming a lifetime member and helping with the Ladies Auxiliary of the Hospital. She also served as a volunteer at the Marion Veterans Hospital. Ruth was a member of the Marion Senior Citizens Center, where when she was able, participated in many of their activities. Some of her interest included being an avid reader, dancing and spending time with people.

She is survived by her husband, Earnie of Marion; daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Floyd Partain of Marion; son, Roger Swan of Marion; daughter-in-law, Sandy Swan of Marion; four grandchildren, Julie Ann Boles of Herrin, Brian Alan Swan of Lexington, Ky., Laurie Lynn Swan of Herrin and Kim Anglin and her husband, David, of Harrisburg; four great-grandchildren, Jason, Kari and Aaron Boles, all of Herrin, and Shawn David Anglin of Harrisburg; sister-in-law, Dorothy Parson of Troy; eight stepchildren, Bud Younger and his wife, DeDe, of Fairfield, Texas, Diana Geihsler of Fowlerville, Mich., Donald Younger and his wife, Denise, of Logan, Ronald Younger and his wife, Katherine, of Sesser, Judy Fairchild and her husband, John, of Woodhaven, Mich., Dennis Younger and his wife, Mary Jane, of Ina, Danny Younger and his wife, Veronica, of Benton, and Brenda Fitzpatrick and her husband, Bobbie, of Harrisburg; also, a multitude of step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren, several other extended family members, many friends and her Schnauzer pet companion, Buddy. Ruth will be missed by all who knew her but will always be cherished in their memories.

She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Melvin, and two brothers, Paul and Cecil Parson.

Arrangements for Mary Ruth (Swan) Younger have been entrusted to Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home, 900 N. Court St., Marion. Visitation will be held between the hours of 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at the funeral home. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home of Marion, with Pastor Don Burroughs presiding and the Rev. Bobbie Fitzpatrick assisting.

Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery of Marion, next to her first husband, Melvin.

For those who prefer memorial contributions may be made to Aldersgate United Methodist Church Building Fund and mailed c/o Wilson-McReynolds Funeral Home P.O. Box 370, Marion, IL 62959. Memorial contribution envelopes will also be available at the funeral home.

NINA G. MILLER

Benton - Nina G. Miller, 94, died at 11:40 a.m. Monday, April 5, 2004, at her home in Benton, surrounded by her family.

Nina was born Dec. 5, 1901, the daughter of Henry and Maud Jones of Rend City. On Oct. 15, 1925, she was married to Raymond F. Miller of Rend City, who preceded her in death on May 6, 1967. To this union seven children were born. They are Doris (William) Gilbreath, Lida (John) Rusher, James R. (Barbara) Miller, and Karen (Jim) Morrison, all of Benton; Ailene (Larry) Liebman, Billie (Ben) Hessleberg of St. Louis, Mo. and Ruth Ann Patin of Haughton, La.

Nina was the grandmother f 19 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

One brother, Henry R. Jones, and numerous nieces and nephews, survives her. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one brother, Kenneth; one sister, Wanda Bullington; two infant sisters; and one great-grandson, Will Gilbreath, all of Rend City.

Nina was a charter member of the Rend Baptist Church. She was a homemaker, loving mother and grandmother, and good friend to many many people. She enjoyed sewing and knitting and made many beautiful items for family and friends.

She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.

Services will be at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher on Wednesday, April 7, with Brother Bert Mitchell officiating. Burial will be at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until the time of service at 1 p.m. on Wednesday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to VNA TIP Hospice.

DEWEY H. FRYE JR.

Benton - Dewey H. Frye Jr., 72, of Benton, died at 3 p.m. Sunday, April 4, 2004, at his home.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 8, at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Gene Outland officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Sesser VFW will be in the Masonic & Oddfellows Ceme-tery in Benton. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday to the funeral home. Masonic services will be conducted at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Frye was born April 21, 1931, in Saltville, Va., the son of Dewey H. Frye Sr. and Mae (Roark) Frye. He married Merle (Hayse) Frye on Aug. 15, 1972, and she survives.

Mr. Frye was of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and a member of Sesser Masonic Lodge 918.

He was an Army veteran.

Mr. Frye was retired from mine construction and as a consultant for Roberts & Schaffer Mine Construction Company.

Survivors include his wife, Merle F. Frye, of Benton; two sons, Jim "Butch" Taylor and wife, Jane, of Benton, and Darrel D. Bigham of Vienna; one daughter, Linda Rapp and husband, Tony, of Tamaroa; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother, Curtis Frye and wife, Donna, of Sesser, and their daughter, Becky; one sister, Virginia Allison, of Saltville, Va.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Frye was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers, Monty and Jack.

For those who wish, memorials may be made to the Hazel Dell Freewill Baptist Church in Sesser.

VAN RICHARD RICE

Riverside, Calif. - Van Richard Rice of Riverside, Calif., passed away March 19, 2004.

Graveside services were held March 26 with full military honors at the National Cemetery in Riverside, Calif.

Van was a native of Benton, born May 11, 1923, to Stanley and Edith (Upchurch) Rice.

He retired from Rohr Industries in 1986. Van was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army from 1943-46 and was a veteran of World War II and Korea. He belonged to the VFW Post 9223.

Van is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy Eley, of Riverside; daughter, Victoria, and husband, Patrick Young, of Riverside; son, Van Richard Rice II and wife, Teri, of Plano, Texas; four beloved grandchildren, Paul, Ellen, Trevor and Rebecca; brothers, Allen of Diamondhead, Miss., George of Abilene, Texas, and Jim of Marietta, Ga.; and sisters, Jo Dean Blackwood of Marietta, Ga., and Pat Towle of Benton.

His parents and three brothers, Howard, Donald and Wendell, preceded him in death.

Memorial contributions may be made to Heartland Hospice, 1700 Iowa Ave., #230, Riverside, CA 92507.

ETHEL S. McKEMIE

Lewisville, Texas - Ethel S. McKemie passed away April 1, 2004, in Lewisville, Texas, at the age of 93.

A memorial service was to be held at the Lewisville Estates in Lewisville, Texas, on Tuesday, April 6. Interment will be at the Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton.

She is survived by one sister, Iva Furlow of Christopher; two daughters, Su Rogahn of Valencia, Calif. and Mary Kay Parchman of Sherman, Texas; two grandchildren, David R. Rogahn of Valencia, Calif., and Michele Parchman of Lewisville, Texas.

Her husband, Robert McKemie, and two sons-in-law, Ken Rogahn and Dan Parchman, preceded her in death.

CARROLL HOPSON

Benton - Carroll Hopson, 85, of Benton died at 7:40 p.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004, at Severin Intermediate Care Home in Benton.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Jim Cooper officiating. Burial will be in the Shrewsbury Cemetery in Mill Shoals. Friends may call after 9:30 a.m. Saturday to the funeral home.

Mr. Hopson was born in Mill Shoals on Sept. 29, 1918, the son of Leo and Ella (Mossberger) Hopson. He married Adelle (Starks) in 1938 in Morganfield, Ky. She preceded him in death on July 7, 2003.

Mr. Hopson was a member of the East Benton Baptist Church. He worked for Tri-State Construction. Mr. Hopson was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post 280 in Benton and of the Benton V.F.W.

He is survived by two sons, Jerry Hopson and wife, Georgia, of Centralia and Richard Hopson and wife, Rosa, of Roseville, Calif.; three granddaughters, Janet, Anna and Lisa; and one brother, Paul Hopson and wife, Dorothy, of Mill Shoals.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Adelle Hopson; a son, Thomas; a brother and two sisters.

MARTHA JOANN WAGGONER

Benton - Martha Joann Waggoner, 54, of Benton died at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, 2004, at her home.

Private family services will be held. The Morton & Johnston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Bulgarian Child Inc., 7522 Campbell Drive-Suite 113-172, Dallas, TX 75248.

Martha Joanna Waggoner was born June 28, 1949, in Benton, the daughter of Clyde and Stella (Burzynski) Stewart.

She was a schoolteacher at Thompsonville Grade School. She was a Southern Baptist.

Martha is survived by her mother, Stella Stewart; daughter, Brook Waggoner; and brothers and sisters, Bob Stewart of Royalton, Mary Mandrell of Benton, Bud Stewart of Benton, Beverly Seddon of St. Charles, Mo., Dick Stewart of Benton, Jack Dean Stewart of Benton and Danny Stewart of Benton.

LENA MAE DURHAM

Benton - Lena Mae Durham, 84, of Benton, died at 11:35 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at the Franklin Hospital in Benton.

She was born in Crowder, Mo. n May 1, 1919, the daughter of John and Jessie (Jefferies) Dillon. She married Charles E. Durham on April 22, 1939. He preceded her in death on June 11, 1996.

Mrs. Durham is survived by two sons: Charles L. Durham and wife, Nancy, of Metropolis and Larry Durham of Benton; one granddaughter, Stephanie Calvin and husband, Kevin, of Grand Chain; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one sister, Edith Clark.

Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 9, at the Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton, with the Rev. Burton Wills officiating. There will be no visitation.

Those attending the service on Friday are requested to meet at the cemetery. The Morton & Johnston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

WILLIAM EDWIN KEENEY

Royalton - William Edwin "Bill" Keen-ey, 83, of Royalton died at 2:30 a.m. Thursday, April 8, 2004, at the Oak Grove Nursing Home in Carbondale.

Funeral services for Mr. Keeney will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 10, at the Vantrease Funeral Home in Royalton, with Brother Ron Knox officiating. Burial will be at Blairsville Cemetery. Visiting hours are after 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home until the hour of the services.

Bill was born September 12, 1920, in Charles City, Iowa, to William Thomas and Helen (Hess) Keeney.

He married Frieda Elizabeth Fitzner on Sept. 14, 1940, in Wheaton. She survives in Royalton.

Other survivors include a daughter, Karen McBride and a granddaughter, Rachel Ann Sanders, both of Royalton; a sister and brother-in-law, Delores and Duane Ferguson of West Chicago; and several nieces and nephews.

His parents, a sister, Murial Dreibrodt, and a grandson, William Michael Keeney, preceded him in death.

Mr. Keeney was a charter member of the Geneva Road Baptist Church in Wheaton and had attended the Royalton First Baptist Church. He was graduate of the West Chicago Community High School and the Institute of Lettering and Design in Chicago.

Bill was a Navy veteran of World War II, where he served as a mechanic on a motor torpedo boat in Squadron 39. He was the former owner/operator of the Central 66 service station in Wheaton. He and Frieda moved to Royalton in October of 1989 after his retirement.
