MODENA STELLA SILEVEN

Royalton - Modena Stella Sileven, 82, of Royalton died at 10:34 a.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2004, at Herrin Hospital.

Funeral services for Mrs. Sileven will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 10, at the Vantrease Funeral Home in Royalton with the Rev. Mark Fitzpatrick officiating. Burial will be at Miners Cemetery east of Royalton. Visiting hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in memory of Mrs. Sileven may be made to the New Life Apostolic Pentecostal Church. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.

Modena was born January 23, 1922, in Zeigler to Joshua "Jock" and Clara Elda (Heiple) Lefler.

She married Virgil Elvis Carpenter August 19, 1938, in Jackson, Mo. He preceded her in death Oct. 14, 1986.

She married Harrison "Harry" Sileven Oct. 22, 2001, in Wickliffe, Ky. He survives in Royalton.

Other survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Ladonna and Ralph Walden of Granite City; a son and daughter-in-law, Virgil L. and Bonnie Carpenter of Royalton; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Frances and Robert Terry of South Bend, Ind., Portia and Jessie Grimes of Royalton, and Sherry and Tom Cook of Christopher; two brothers and sister-in-law, Thomas Lefler, and Jock and Renee Lefler, all of Royalton.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, her step-mother, Camille Lefler; two sisters, Phyllis Turner and Darlene Lefler; and two brothers, Raymond Paul and Mark Lefler.

Mrs. Sileven was a charter member of the First Apostolic Church in Royalton and a life member of the Apostolic Faith. She was a homemaker and had worked as a nurse's aid at Herrin Hospital.

FARRELL M. 'CODY' BISHOP

Mt. Vernon - Farrell M. "Cody" Bishop, 76, of Mt. Vernon, formerly of Calhoun, Ky., died at 11:55 a.m. Friday, April 9, 2004, in Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

Funeral services were to be held at 1 p.m. Monday, April 12, at Poplar Grove Cemetery in Poplar Grove, Ky. There was no visitation. Austin Funeral Home, 1330 E. Fourth St., Mt. Vernon, Ind., handled the arrangements.

Condolences may be sent to the family.

Mr. Bishop was an oil pumper for Resser Oil Company and was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

Mr. Bishop was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie, and two sons, Mickey and Steve.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Terry and Nancy Bishop of Ewing, and Bill and LaVerta Bishop of Searcy, Ark.; one sister, Vernon L. Keene of Macedonia; 10 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

LaDONNA MARIE (SMITH) GREEN

Hallettsville, Texas - LaDonna Marie (Smith) Green, 43, of Hallettsville, Texas, died at 4 a.m. Saturday, April 10, 2004, at the Lavaca Medical Center in Hallettsville.

Funeral services for Ms. Green will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 15, at Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler with Brother Dee Spear of the Cleburne Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be at Zeigler Cemetery. Visiting hours are from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial contributions in memory of Ms. Green may be made to "Kim Little" for her daughter, Sarah, education and will be accepted at the funeral home or may be mailed in care of Vantrease Funeral Home, P.O. Box 111, Zeigler, IL 62999.

LaDonna was born Sept. 30, 1960 in Peotone, Illinois to James Elmer and Doris Mae (Smith) Smith.

She is survived by her mother, Doris Mae Smith of Mulkeytown; a daughter, Sarah Lynn Green of Hallettsville, Texas; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Kimberly Ann Little of Hallettsville, Brenda Sue and Ray Raulerson of League City, Texas, and Vera and John Restivo of Mulkeytown; four brothers and a sister-in-law, Larry Dale, Timothy Wade and Frederick Earl Smith, all of Mulkeytown, and Marvin Lee and Katie Smith of Benton; and several nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father and an infant brother, James Keith Smith, and her grandparents, Earl and Lucille Smith, and Elmer and Bertha Smith.

LaDonna attended the Vienna Baptist Church and had worked as a nurse's aide at a nursing home, both in Hallettsville.

ROSA 'ROSIE' DOBROSKY

Zeigler - Rosa "Rosie" Dobrosky, 90, of Zeigler died at 8:15 a.m. Friday, April 10, 2004, at the Colonial Manor in Zeigler.

Rosie was born Feb. 14, 1914 in Chicago.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Julia Barkowski. She is survived by her friend and guardian, Joyce Smith of Christopher and Joyce's daughters, Angela and Shawna Smith. Rose was like an extra grandmother to every child of every staff member of Colonial Manor. She will be greatly missed by both staff and residents, several of whom have known her for over 30 years.

As a child, Rosie attended the School for the Deaf at Jacksonville. She lived for many years at the Lincoln State School before moving to the Village Shelter Care in Royalton. She has resided at the Colonial Manor in Zeigler since the facility opened in 1975.

A private memorial service for Rosie will be held at the Colonial Manor in Zeigler at a later date.

Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler is in charge of the arrangements.

DR. GEORGE HICKMAN BURKHART

Formerly of Benton - Dr. George Hickman Burkhart, age 94, died April 2, 2004, in Chula Vista, Calif.

Born in Benton on Nov. 25, 1909, he was a son of Carl and Kate Hickman Burkhart. He was a grandson of Benton pioneers Dr. Zachariah and Julia Johnson Hickman. He was a 12th generation descendant of William Brewster of the Mayflower landing of 1620.

Dr. Burkhart attended schools in Benton, graduating from B.T.H.S. He then attended and graduated from the University of Illinois Medical School, Chicago. There he met and married Dorothy Stone, a registered nurse.

Dr. Burkhart began his medical career in Benton. During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Medical Corps and was awarded two Purple Hearts. Following his honorable discharge, he returned to Benton and resumed medical practice.

He moved with his family to Chula Vista, Calif., where he continued as a physician. Dr. Burkhart and his wife celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1985.

Dr. Burkhart closed his medical office in 1971. He was later employed as a medical consultant by the state of California. At the age of 90 he decided not to renew his medical license and retired.

Dr. Burkhart is survived by his beloved daughter, Sherry, and her husband, Richard Carson, of Rockville, Md. Richard Carson became a real son to him. Other survivors are his sister, Kate Burkhart (Joe) Daniel, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; Larry and Angie Oswald, close friends in Chula Vista, Calif.; Mrs. Jean M. Burkhart of Pullman, Wash.; a cousin, Winifred Burkhart Burress, of Marion; and several nephews and nieces.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy, who was affectionately known as "Dode;" two sisters, Ellen Burkhart, who was a longtime teacher at B.T.H.S., and Marjorie Burkhart Gilbert of Carbondale; Dr. Jean M. Burkhart, a brother, of Olympia, Wash.; Attorney Joseph W. Hickman, a cousin, of Benton; and Dr. J.W. Burkhart, a cousin, of Muskogee, Okla.

A memorial service for Dr. Burkhart will be held in Chula Vista, Calif.

LEONARD JONES

Orient - Leonard Jones, 74, of Orient, died at 12:45 a.m. on Sunday, April 11, 2004, at his home.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 13, at Union Funeral Home in West Frankfort, with the Rev. Dwight Jones officiating. Burial will be in Denning Cemetery in Orient.

Friends may call after 6 p.m. Monday to the funeral home.

He was born on Feb. 28, 1931, in Orient, the son of Earl and Nellie (Johnson) Jones.

Mr. Jones retired as a coal miner in 1993 from Old Ben 24. He was a member of U.M.W.A. Local Union 1345, was a U.S. Army veteran, and was a member of the American Legion of Orient.

He married Thelma Bush n April 3, 1950, near Orient, and she survives.

Survivors include his wife, Thelma Jones of Orient; two sons, Don and wife, Pam, Jones of West Frankfort, and Gary Jones of Orient; two daughters, Lisa and husband, Danny, Williams of West Frankfort, and Nancy and husband, Rick, Owsley of Orient; two sisters, Roberta Hermetz of Benton and Daisy Hatcher of Monee; five grandsons, Ricky Owsley, Samuel and Nathanel Williams, and Justin and Keith Jones; and one great-granddaughter, Ashley Owsley.

Mr. Jones was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Shirley Mays; and one infant son, John David Jones.

ROBERT O. ADAMS

West City - Robert O. Adams, 76, of West City died at 3:47 a.m. Thursday, April 15, 2004, at his home.

Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday, April 16, at the Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton with the Rev. Ron Cremeens officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the West Frankfort VFW. Those attending the service are requested to go directly to the cemetery.

The Morton & Johnston Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois Inc.

Mr. Adams was born Sept. 18, 1927, in Christopher, the son of Emery Adams Sr. and Margaret (Yates) Adams.

Mr. Adams was retired from the U.S. Air Force after 20 years of service. He was a lifetime member of the West Frankfort VFW.

He was preceded in death by his parents and by three brothers and two sisters.

PAUL 'GENE' THREEWITT

Benton - Paul "Gene" Threewitt, 77, of Benton, died at 5:10 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2004, at the Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Arrangements are pending at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.

BEVERLY JANE FLACK

Zeigler - Beverly Jane Flack, 57, of Zeigler died at 12 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2004, at her home.

Beverly was born Oct. 31, 1946, in Du Quoin Billy Dayton and Lillian Lucille (Jones) Ray. She married Rodney Flack Aug. 9, 1975, in Christopher. He survives in Zeigler.

Other survivors include her mother of Marion; two daughters, Cindy Ray of Zeigler and Shelly Ray of West Frankfort; a step-son, Rocky Flack of Du Quoin; three grandchildren, Brett and Cody Ray of West Frankfort and Ryan Flack of Nashville; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Barbara and Michael Rolla of Christopher and Betsy and Darrell Hurley of Marion; a brother and sister-in-law, Roger and Martina Ray of Belleville; and three nephews and their wives, Rodney and Terry Hale of Palestine, Michael and Valerie Rolla of Carbondale, and Billy and Jonna Rolla of Benton.

She was preceded in death by her father and a granddaughter, Alexia D. Ray. Beverly attended the Zeigler First Baptist Church. She was a homemaker and a member of the Zeigler Eagles and American Legion Auxiliaries.

It was Beverly's wishes to be cremated. Memorial services for Mrs. Flack will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, April 20, at the First Baptist Church in Zeigler with Brother David Lindgens officiating. Family and friends should meet at the church just prior to 11 a.m. Tuesday.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the family or to the First Baptist Church of Zeigler. Envelopes will be available at the church or may be mailed to Vantrease Funeral Home, P.O. Box 111, Zeigler, IL 62999.

Vantrease Funeral Home in Zeigler is in charge of the arrangements.

SAMUEL B. PARKHILL

Thompsonville - Samuel B. Parkhill, 70, of Thompsonville, died at 1:35 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004, with loving family by his side at his residence.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Melton Nelms officiating. Burial will be in the Jones Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Monday to the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Military rites will be conducted by the Thompsonville American Le-gion.

He was born March 9, 1934 in Steel City to Clyde Parkhill and Madge (McCarty) Parkhill. He was married to Mona (Eldridge) Parkhill on Oct. 18, 1956, in Johnston City, and she survives.

Surviving are his wife, Mona; two sons, Fred and Norma Parkhill of West Frankfort, and Samuel W. and Tena of Sesser; two daughters, Tina McPherson of Cookville, Tenn., and Toni Kelly and husband Steve of Thompsonville; two brothers, Clyde D. and wife Louise Parkhill of West Frankfort, and Ray and wife Verna Parkhill of Thompsonville; and five sisters, Judy and husband Byrl Crawford of West Frankfort, Mary and husband Charles Prior of Thompsonville, Jackie Stubblefield of Benton, Martha Todd of Potosi, Mo., and Patricia Dills of Hammond, Ind.

Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, Dawn and Husband Jeromy Spicer of Altamont, Carrie McCoy and friend, Ryan Hancock, Bobby and Sean Smothers of St. Louis, Chad Parkhill of Florida, Randy Kelly and wife, Kristie of U.S. Navy, Conn., Melisa Burgess of Cookville, Tenn., Tom Newburn and wife, Heather, of U.S. Navy, Ga., Valecia Wilson of Altamont, Nick Kelly of Thompsonville, Harvey Newburn and wife, Tara, of St. Elmo, Tiffany Parkhill of Valier , Shawn Parkhill of West Frankfort, Justin Burgess of Cookville, Tenn., and Jeremy and Lindsey Parkhill, both of Sesser; 21 great grandchildren, Brandon Knight, Dustin Murphy, Alix and Samantha McCoy, De Vonta and Marcel Burgess, Cheyenne Parkhill, Denver Parkhill, Austin, Tyler, Emily and Abigal Hancock, Curtis Wilson, Aubrey Kelly, Sabeen Newburn, Dylan Smothers, Xaiver and Jamera Thomas, Haven and Arikah Newburn, and Alexis Burgess; two sisters-in-law, Carol and Larry Carter of Thompsonville, and Gala Baily of Eldorado; one brother-in-law, John Eldridge and wife, Donna of Thompsonville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Ruth Crawford, brother, Dennis Parkhill and a daughter, Maria Newburn. He served in the U.S.M.C., three years active and eight years reserves. He was president of the U.M.W.A. Local 2117 for 23 years and was a member of the Thompsonville American Legion.
