SAMUEL B. PARKHILL

Thompsonville - Samuel B. Parkhill, 70, of Thompsonville, died at 1:35 p.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004, with loving family by his side at his residence.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 20, at the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home, with the Rev. Melton Nelms officiating. Burial will be in the Jones Cemetery. Friends may call after 5 p.m. Monday to the Parker-Reedy Funeral Home in West Frankfort. Military rites will be conducted by the Thompsonville American Le-gion.

He was born March 9, 1934 in Steel City to Clyde Parkhill and Madge (McCarty) Parkhill. He was married to Mona (Eldridge) Parkhill on Oct. 18, 1956, in Johnston City, and she survives.

Surviving are his wife, Mona; two sons, Fred and Norma Parkhill of West Frankfort, and Samuel W. and Tena of Sesser; two daughters, Tina McPherson of Cookville, Tenn., and Toni Kelly and husband Steve of Thompsonville; two brothers, Clyde D. and wife Louise Parkhill of West Frankfort, and Ray and wife Verna Parkhill of Thompsonville; and five sisters, Judy and husband Byrl Crawford of West Frankfort, Mary and husband Charles Prior of Thompsonville, Jackie Stubblefield of Benton, Martha Todd of Potosi, Mo., and Patricia Dills of Hammond, Ind.

Also surviving are 16 grandchildren, Dawn and Husband Jeromy Spicer of Altamont, Carrie McCoy and friend, Ryan Hancock, Bobby and Sean Smothers of St. Louis, Chad Parkhill of Florida, Randy Kelly and wife, Kristie of U.S. Navy, Conn., Melisa Burgess of Cookville, Tenn., Tom Newburn and wife, Heather, of U.S. Navy, Ga., Valecia Wilson of Altamont, Nick Kelly of Thompsonville, Harvey Newburn and wife, Tara, of St. Elmo, Tiffany Parkhill of Valier , Shawn Parkhill of West Frankfort, Justin Burgess of Cookville, Tenn., and Jeremy and Lindsey Parkhill, both of Sesser; 21 great grandchildren, Brandon Knight, Dustin Murphy, Alix and Samantha McCoy, De Vonta and Marcel Burgess, Chyenne Parkhill, Denver Parkhill, Austin, Tyler, Emily and Abigal Hancock, Curtis Wilson, Aubrey Kelly, Sabeen Newburn, Dylan Smothers, Xaiver and Jamera Thomas, Haven and Arikah Newburn, and Alexis Burgess; two sisters-in-law, Carol and Larry Carter of Thompsonville, and Gala Baily of Eldorado; one brother-in-law, John Eldridge and wife, Donna of Thompsonville; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister, Ruth Crawford, brother, Dennis Parkhill and a daughter, Maria Newburn. He served in the U.S.M.C., three years active and eight years reserves. He was president of the U.M.W.A. Local 2117 for 23 years and was a member of the Thompsonville American Legion.

KATHRYN BAINE

Tamms - Kathryn Baine, 86, of Tamms, died at 9:30 p.m. on Friday, April 16, 2004, at home. She was born May 17, 1917 in Union County, the daughter of Oliver Houston and Ida Myrtle Dewitt Ferguson.

She was married Nov. 5, 1936 to William W. Baine. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1963.

Mrs. Baine was a member of Sandy Creek Baptist Church. She had worked as a storekeeper at Mowell Stores in Olive Branch and Tamms, and as a cook at Southeast Hospital and Hillside Terrace Nursing Home.

Survivors include three daughters: Betty Poddig, Evelyn Aguila, and Shirley Boren, all of Tamms; two sons: John Baine of Benton, and Steve Baine of Tamms; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Mary Weiss of Goreville; nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

Besides her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by an infant son, Billy Wayne Baine in 1938; by two granddaughters; two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services for Kathryn Baine were held at 1 p.m. on Monday, April 19, at Sandy Creek Baptist Church near Tamms, with the Rev. Clint Nale officiating. Interment was in McCrite Cemetery.

Visitation was held on Sunday at the Craine Funeral Home in Tamms.

Memorials may be made to Sandy Creek Baptist Church.

ROBERT ALAN DAVIS

Carbondale - Robert Alan Davis, 58, of Carbondale, died at 2:15 a.m. Saturday, April 17, 2004, in the Veterans Administration Hospital in Marion.

Graveside services were to be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, April 19, at Oakland Cemetery in Carbondale, with the Rev. John Horn officiating. Visitation was held from 1 until 2 p.m. on Monday at Walker Funeral Home in Carbondale. Memorial contributions may be made to Lakeland Baptist Church in Carbondale.

Mr. Davis was born Aug. 1, 1945, in Benton, the son of Otho Evan and Opal Dora (McElyea) Davis.

Mr. Davis was an Army veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and a former coal miner. He was a member of the Carbondale VFW, president of the Echo Computer Club, and served as a volunteer fireman for West City in 1995.

He married Reba McArthy on June 8, 1996, in Carbondale, and she survives.

Survivors include his wife, Reba Davis of Carbondale; two brothers, Leonard Davis of Ocala, Fla., and Don Davis of Boca Raton, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his parents.

PAUL DAVID PARK

Formerly Christopher - Paul David Park, 75, of Utica, Ky., formerly of Christopher, died April 19, 2004, at Lourdes Hospital in Paducah, Ky.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at the Gilbert Funeral Home in Christopher, with the Rev. David McConnell officiating. Burial will be in Harrison Cemetery in Buckner. Friends may call to Gilbert Funeral Home on Thursday, from 10 a.m. until time of the service.

Mr. Park was born May 5, 1928, in Christopher, the son of Hiram L. and Nina Rivers Harris Park.

Mr. Park was a retired park ranger.

He married Katheryn Watson, who preceded him in death.

Mr. Park served in the Navy for eight years during World War II and the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Price of West Frankfort; stepchildren, William and Pat Russell, and Bruce and Darlene Russell, all of Owensboro, Ky., Scott and Robin Moore, and James and Kim Moore, all of Johnston City, Mike Moore of Trenton, Judi and David Bartlett, and Gayle Miller, all of Lakeland, Fla., and Fonda and Ti Le of Louisiana; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, Loraine Peters of Du Quoin, Vera Mae Rae of East Peoria, and Harold Park, Josephine Kupczak and Leodis Park, all of Christopher.

He was preceded in death by one brother and one sister.

PAUL 'GENE' THREEWITT

Benton - Paul "Gene" Threewitt, 77, of Benton, died at 5:10 p.m. Sunday, April 18, 2004, at Memorial Hospital of Carbondale.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, April 22, at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton, with the Rev. Don Wilburn officiating. Burial with military rites conducted by the Benton American Legion and VFW Posts will be in the Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Morton & Johnston Funeral Home in Benton.

Mr. Threewitt was born in Benton on Oct. 28, 1926, the son of C.E. and Myrtie (Nix) Threewitt.

He married Ida Delanna (Woods) Threewitt; she preceded him in death on April 5, 1986.

Mr. Threewitt was an Army veteran. He was assistant manager at Kroger for several years; he then worked with his wife at a children's home in Wisconsin and retired from there.

Mr. Threewitt loved to work in his yard with his flowers and he enjoyed fishing.

He is survived by several nieces and nephews, including a nephew George, whom Gene thought of as a brother; several great-nieces and great-nephews; and by a great-niece, Ashlee, whom he was especially fond of.

Mr. Threewitt was preceded in death by his parents, wife, five brothers: Bill, Ulyss, Vernon, Wayne and Wendell; by three sisters: Opal, Vevia, and Nellie; and by one younger brother and one younger sister.

JOHN E. PETRO, JR.

Sesser - John E. Petro, Jr., 63, passed away at home with his family at 6:35 a.m. on April 18, 2004. He was born in Momence on July 11, 1940, to John Edson, Sr. and Patricia (O'Brien) Petro.

Visitation will be at the Davis Funeral Chapel, south of Sesser on Route 148, from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 20, and from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 21. Funeral services will follow at the Hazel Dell Free Will Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 21, with the Rev. Gene Outland officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser at a later date.

Donations can be made to Hospice of Southern Illinois or Hazel Dell Youth Fund.

Mr. Petro was a retired coal miner, having worked 30 years for Freeman United at No. 5 Mine and for Old Ben at No. 26 Mine. He enjoyed sharing stories of his many friends and experiences underground.

John was a Baptist and a member of Hazel Dell Free Will Baptist Church of Sesser.

He married Linda Sue Goessman on Oct. 25, 1959, and they had four children: John Patrick and Stephanie Petro, Kelly Dean and Cathy Petro, Mark Allen and Gena Petro, and Patricia Jo and Bart Swisher, all of Sesser.

John was an avid golfer, sports and history enthusiast. He truly loved attending the ballgames of and sharing his interests with his eight grandchildren: Amie and Brian Nitz of Centralia, Joshua, Ryan, Paige and Logan Petro of Sesser, Danielle and Andrew Swisher of Sesser, and Jessica Petro of West Frankfort.

He is also survived by one sister, Carla and Bill Smith of Momence and one brother, Jerry and Margie Petro of Liberty, Tenn., along with many nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles, mother-in-law Josephine Goessman and brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dean and Margaret Goessman, all of Sesser.

John was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother, James P. Petro, and one nephew, Terry Jo Smith.

ETHEL CLEO CASAS

Zeigler - Ethel Cleo Casas, 90, of Zeigler died Monday, April 19, 2004, in the Herrin Hospital.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 22, at the Davis Funeral Chapel in Sesser, with Brother Marvin Boswell officiating. Burial will be in Neal Cemetery in Logan. Friends may call from 9 a.m. until time of the service on Thursday to the Davis Funeral Chapel.

Mrs. Casas was born Aug. 20, 1913, in West Frankfort, the daughter of Maude (McCullough) and Moses L. Neal, who preceded her in death.

She married Joseph Casas Jan. 7, 1964. He preceded her in death Dec. 22, 1987.

Mrs. Casas attended the Creek Nation Pentecostal Church. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two stepdaughters, Colleen Hawn of Blue Island and Lola Paladino of Hanover Park.

Mrs. Casas was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one brother, and three sisters.

NIGHTA JEWEL MERKEL

Coal City - Nighta Jewel (Murry) Merkel, 93, of Coal City, passed away Monday, April 19, 2004, at the Morris Lincoln Nursing Home in Morris.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at the Brayfield-Gilbert Funeral Home in Sesser, with visitation two hours preceding the services. Interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Sesser.

A visitation will be held at the R.W. Patterson Funeral Homes, Ltd., Braidwood Chapel on Thursday, April 22, from 5 to 8 p.m.

Memorials in her name to the Grundy County Hospice would be appreciated.

She was born Dec. 17, 1910, in Perry County, to the late Camdon Edgar and Rhonda Ann (Galloway) Murry.

Surviving are three sons, Roy and wife, Sharon, Merkel of Braidwood, Russell and wife, Elvera, Merkel of Ocala, Fla., and Lynn and wife, Myrthell, Merkel of Helena, Mont.; two daughters, Betty and husband, Jim, Rawlish of Coal City and Hazel Plata of Maysville, N.C.; 11 grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and numerous nephews and two nieces.

Preceding her in death were her husband, Russell James Merkel, whom she married Dec. 26, 1928 in Du Quoin; a daughter, Linda Sue Merkel; a granddaughter, Linda Plata; a great-grandson, Zachery James Merkel; a brother and sister-in-law, Xelpho and wife, Gertie, Murry; a sister and brother-in-law, Lenoir and husband, Sam, Merkel, and a son-in-law, George Plata.

ABE WAYNE ROBINSON

Vincennes, Ind. - Abe Wayne Robinson, 83, passed away on Saturday, April 3, 2004, in Vincennes, Ind.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at the Masonic & Oddfellows Cemetery in Benton, with the Rev. Tony Auxier officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Benton American Legion and VFW Posts. The Morton & Johnston Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Mr. Robinson was born Dec 16, 1920, in Auxier, Ky., the son of Thomas and Inis Robinson.

He was retired from coal mine construction. Mr. Robinson was a World War II Army veteran and was enlisted with Company B 5th Ranger Infantry. For his service, he was awarded two Bronze Battle Stars, a Silver Star, Good Conduct Ribbon and Purple Heart.

Survivors include a daughter, Jeri and husband, Mike, Davis of Benton; one granddaughter, Kristy Dearing; and one sister and brother-in-law, Mildred and Bill Schuler.

Mr. Robinson was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
