CARTHAGE, Ill. - Gary Swank, 45, of Carthage, Ill., died at his home Saturday morning, Jan. 3, 2004.
He was born at Memorial Hospital in Carthage on Aug. 9, 1958, the son of Wayne and Erma Wachtendorf Swank.
He attended school in Carthage and graduated from Carthage High School in 1977. On Sept. 15, 1984, he was united in marriage to Sally Bragg at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage.
Mr. Swank was the custodian at Carthage High School and also a school bus driver.
He had also served as a city policeman, was a firefighter for the Carthage Clipper Fire Department and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage.
Survivors include: his wife of Carthage; a daughter, Heather at home; and his parents of Carthage.
Funeral services will be at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carthage on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Greg Busboom officiating.
Burial will follow in Moss Ridge cemetery in Carthage.
Visitation will be today at Printy Funeral Home in Carthage, with family meeting friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
An education fund has been established for his daughter.
Julie Kay Linnenburger Yocum

SCIOTA, Ill. - Julie Kay Linnenburger Yocum, 41, of Sciota, Ill., formerly of Hamilton, Ill., died Friday, Jan. 23, 2004, at 10:13 a.m. at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb, Ill.
She was born on Nov. 15, 1962, in Topeka, Kan., the daughter of Marvin William and Darlene A. LaBonte Linnenburger. She married
Danny Yocum on May 10, 2001, in Macomb. He survives in Sciota.
Additional survivors include: her mother of Hamilton; a daughter, Hope Danielle Yocum at home in Sciota; a son, David Craig Coovert of Sycamore, Ill.; a step-daughter, Lisa (and Karl) Hall of Macomb; two step-sons, David Rittenhouse of Adair, Ill., and Robert (and Marnie) Featherston of Cloquet, Minn.; two sisters, Cindy (and Roger) Kirby of Hamilton and Lisa Hoehne of Carol Stream, Ill.; two brothers, Mike (and Val) Linnenburger of Excelsior Springs, Mo., and David (Tracy) Linnenburger of Macomb; and four step-grandchildren, Kyle, Kolton, Keegan and Garret.
She was preceded in death by her father in 1979.
Mrs. Yocum graduated from Hamilton High School in 1980 and graduated from Robert Morris College in Carthage, Ill., in 1982.
She was a former member of Bethel Presbyterian Church of Hamilton and was a member of Roseville Christian Church, Roseville, Ill.
Mrs. Yocum had worked at Dadant & Sons, Inc. in Hamilton and Yetter Manufacturing in Colchester, Ill. Her last employment was Caseys in Roseville.
She enjoyed cooking and especially liked to bake cookies at Christmas.
Mrs. Yocum enjoyed helping others and especially loved spending time with her family.
Services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Lamporte Funeral Home of Carthage, with Rev. Tim Randall officiating.
Burial will be in the Bushnell cemetery, Bushnell, Ill.
Friends may call today at the funeral home, with family meeting friends from 5 to 8 p.m.
A memorial has been established.
Gayla P. Bryant

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Gayla P. Bryant, 50, of Hot Springs, Ark., died Monday, Feb. 16, 2004.
She was born at Avon, Ill., on Sept. 23, 1953 the daughter of Wade E. Blansett and Agnes Lovell Blansett. She was married
to Robert P. Bryant on Dec. 26, 1973. Her father and one brother Louis Blansett preceded her in death.
She was a member of the Hot Springs First Assembly of God Church and was a licensed practical nurse. She was a wonderful wife, mother and daughter.
She is survived by: her husband of Hot Springs; a son, Stacy Bryant of Hot Springs; a daughter and son-in-law, Laura and Tracy Sadowski of Pearcy, Ark.; three granddaughters, Robyn Bryant, Patrisha Bryant and Catelynn Sadowski; her mother of Hot Springs; one brother and sister-in-law, Master Sergeant Terry Blansett and wife Sissy of Ft. Leavenworth, Kan.; several nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Davis-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, Hot Springs, with Rev. Thomas Gotcher and Rev. Mark Haston officiating.
Interment will be in the Morning Star cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Hot Springs.
Visitation will be held Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. Family will also meet with friends at 3 p.m. Saturday in Pearcy.
Memorials may be made to the American Kidney Foundation.
Sabula M. Bunch

QUINCY, Ill. - Sabula M. Bunch, 94, of Sunset Home, Quincy, Ill., and formerly of Keokuk, died Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2004, at 3:40 p.m. in Blessing Hospital, Quincy.
She was born Jan. 6, 1910, in Keokuk, the daughter of Hugh J. and Bertha A. Stice Inman. On April 27, 1929, she married
Ross C. Bunch in Keokuk. He preceded her in death in Sept. 19, 1978.
Mrs. Bunch was a graduate of Keokuk High School and attended St. Pauls Evangelical Church in Keokuk.
She moved to Quincy from Keokuk in 1995.
Survivors include: two sons, Ross E. Bunch and his wife, Priscilla, of Quincy and Kenneth L. Bunch and his wife, Cecilia, of Keokuk; six grandchildren, Michael Bunch and his wife, Cynthia, of Colorado Springs, Colo., Steven Bunch and his wife, Patti, of Quincy, Chris Bunch and his wife, Cynthia, of Quincy, Julie Bunch, of Quincy, Kurt Bunch and his wife, Gina, of Muscatine, Kyle Bunch, of Burlington; 16 great-grandchildren, Steve Bunch, of Quincy, Jason Bunch of Winter Park, Fla., Joshua, Shawn, Scott, Brad, Cara, Bryan and Christian Bunch of Quincy, Chad Bunch and his wife, Marissa, of Florissant, Mo., Matt and Adam Bunch of Springfield, Ill., Kristopher and Kevin Bunch of Muscatine, Byron and Gary Poindexter, of Colorado; two great-great-grandchildren, Aaron and Aidan Bunch of Florissant; a niece, Linda Wilson and her husband, Kip, of Rushville, Ill.; and a nephew, John Inman and his wife, Mary Ellen, of Quincy.
She also was preceded in death by a brother, Oscar E. Inman and a grandson, Michael Joseph.
Memorial services were Feb. 13 at St. James Lutheran Church, Quincy, with the Rev. Marlin Rempfer officiating.
Memorial contributions may be made to Sunset Home or St. James Lutheran Church.

Edna Mae Newman

HAMILTON, Ill. - Edna Mae Newman, 83, of Hamilton, Ill., died at 7:05 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2004, in the Mercer County Hospital Hospice in Aledo, Ill.
She was born Feb. 6, 1921, in Carthage, Ill., a daughter of James and Helen David Jackson. On Nov. 18, 1941, she married
Edward F. Newman. They resided in Hamilton until his death in June of 1993.
Mrs. Newman was a member of the First Christian Church of Hamilton.
Survivors include: a daughter, Helen Marshall and her husband, James, of Aledo; grandchildren, Joanne Marshall and Stephen Gilbert of Ames and John and Janna Marshall of Lindenhurst, Ill.; great-grandchildren, Christian and Nicole Marshall of Lindenhurst; a sister, Maxine Huebetry of Lomax, Ill.; four brothers, James Jackson of New London, Dillworth Jackson of Burlington, Ora Jackson of Burlington and Marion Jackson of Longview, Texas; many nieces and nephews; as well as many friends who touched her life with love and kindness.
She also was preceded in death by a sister, Barbara Jackson; three brothers, Harold, Raymond "Doc" and Delbert Jackson; and an infant daughter.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Funeral services are at 1 p.m. Friday at Lamporte Funeral Home in Hamilton.
Burial will be in Oakwood cemetery, Hamilton.
Family will meet with friends from noon until the time of services at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Edna Mae Newman Scholarship Fund. What she missed in educational opportunity, she modeled for her family in loving life and people wherever she went.
Jeffrey P. Bliss
Feb. 25, 1954 - Feb. 22, 2004
HAMILTON, Ill. - Jeffrey P. Bliss, 49, of Hamilton, Ill., died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2004, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City.
He was born Feb. 25, 1954, in Primghar, the son of James William and Helen Chastine Hickman Bliss. On June 8, 1975, he was united in marriage to Rebecca Harshbarger in Keokuk. She survives.
He is also survived by: two sons, Ryan Tyler Bliss and his wife Yvette of Carthage, Ill., and Daniel Evan Bliss of the home; two daughters, Kathryn Sinclair Bliss and Loren Mackenzie Bliss, both of the home; a granddaughter, Ali Bliss; his mother of Hamilton; a brother, Gregg Andrews and his wife Debbie of Keokuk; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father.
He graduated from Keokuk Senior High School with the Class of 1972. He attended the United States Naval Academy, received his bachelor of science degree from the University of Iowa in 1976, and his masters of science degree from the University of Kansas in 1985.
Mr. Bliss was a golf professional at Meadowbrook and Mission Hills Country Clubs in Kansas City from 1978 to 1983.
He and his family moved to Keokuk in 1987. He worked for many years in accounting and banking in the Keokuk area, was president of Security State Bank in Hamilton, and had been an accounting/finance instructor for Iowa Wesleyan and Culver-Stockton Colleges since 1990.
Mr. Bliss was past president of the Keokuk Country Club and the Keokuk Area Chamber of Commerce. His past memberships include: The Keokuk School Board, Tri-State Coalition Against Family Violence, Keokuk Little League, Hamilton Sports Boosters, Great River Economic Development Foundation, Iowa Alumni Association, I-Club Member, and the University of Kansas Alumni Association.
He was a Little League, AAU, and YMCA coach as well as a long-time member and a Youth Sponsor of the United Presbyterian Church of Keokuk. He devoted his life to his family and took great pleasure in the accomplishments of his children.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, at the United Presbyterian Church in Keokuk, with Reverend Brian Rihner officiating.
Private burial will be at a later date.
Visitation will be held after 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk, with the family meeting with friends from 5 to 8 p.m.
A memorial has been established for the Bliss Childrens Education Fund.
Alan F. Lee
Dec. 4, 1927 - Feb. 28, 2004
SANTA FE, N.M. - Alan F. Lee, 76, of Santa Fe, N.M., died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004, at St. Vincents Hospital, in Santa Fe.
He was born Dec. 4, 1927, in Neenah, Wis., the son of Margretha and Charles Lee.
The family later moved to Rockford, Ill., where he attended junior and senior high school. He received his bachelor of arts degree and graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Grinnell College, where he was involved in activities of the NAACP.
He then attended the University of Munich in Germany for postgraduate work, and stayed on in Munich to work at Radio Free Europe.
He subsequently enlisted in the Navy, was admitted to Officers Candidate School and served as a lieutenant J.G. in the South Pacific.
Upon his discharge from the Navy he attended Columbia University for two years and earned a masters degree in international affairs. It was there he met his wife, Lynn Fisher. They married
on Nov. 17, 1956, in Lake Placid, N.Y.
He entered the Foreign Service that same year and served at a number of posts over the next 10 years: in intelligence and research in Washington, D.C.; as vice-consul in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada; as Aide to the Ambassador in Bonn, Germany; as a student of the Turkish language for nine months at the Foreign Service Institute in Washington; and as economic officer in the Central Treaty Organization in Ankara, Turkey.
Mr. Lee resigned from the Foreign Service in 1966, moving his family of five children to Keokuk, the birthplace of his wife. There he took on the position of vice president and secretary of the Hubinger Company, an independent corn-refining company. When Hubingers was acquired by H.J. Heinz, he left the company and, with his wife, started Lee Travel Associates, a travel agency. They later added a second office in Fort Madison. After eight years in the business, they sold the agencies and moved to Santa Fe.
Mr. Lee then went into real estate, working as manager of AAA Travel for a short time and eventually developing his own company, Alan Lee Real Estate.
During his years as a business executive, he served on many boards and civic associations. In Keokuk he was a member of the Rotary Club; sat on the Board of Directors of State Central Savings Bank and the Salvation Army; and was president and a member of the Board of the Keokuk Art Center.
Over the last 20 years he was a member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation in Santa Fe.
Mr. Lee retired for good in 1998 and he and his wife spent their time traveling with friends and family, enjoying concerts and art events, gardening, and becoming involved in local Democratic Party activities.
While living in Iowa he spent many hours sailing on the Mississippi River and in his retirement years he loved to sail on the Sea of Cortez.
Adding to his fluency in German and his general interest in languages, he had been studying Spanish for several years with Fernando Mayans at the Santa Fe Community College.
He had recently begun a new activity that brought him great joy and fulfillment, tutoring Patrick Senas fourth grade class at Salazar Elementary School.
He was known as Boppy to his seven grandchildren.
He was a man of great honor, intelligence and compassion and will be sorely missed by his loving family and friends.
Survivors include: his wife of Santa Fe; five children daughter, Carolyn Lee and son-in-law Ted Larsen of Santa Fe, daughter, Elizabeth Lee of Santa Fe, son, David and daughter-in-law Christine Lee of Boston, son, Robert Lee of Phoenix and daughter, Catherine Lee of Boston; seven grandchildren, Alex Delecluse and Madeleine and Nicholas Larsen of Santa Fe, Celia and Emmet Raney of Santa Fe and Rachel and Justin Lee of Boston; and a sister, Barbara and brother-in-law, Bill Higgins of Toquerville, Utah.
A memorial service will be held Saturday at 4 p.m. at St. Bedes Episcopal Church in Santa Fe, followed by a reception at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Salazar Partnership, 978 Indian Ridge Road, Santa Fe, N.M. 87501, in care of the Alan Lee Memorial. The donations will be used to provide reading books for the elementary school students for them to begin their personal libraries. Donations may also be made to MoveOn.org Voter Fund, P.O.
