He was a proud graduate of Millikin University. His Millikin years spanned 1941 - 1948. His ties to Millikin were strong. Jim received the Alumni Merit-Loyalty Award in 1989, which recognizes both outstanding career achievement and loyalty to Millikin. He was also a former Alumni Board member, Quarterback Club member, Phonathon volunteer and class agent for his class of 1948. He was president of his fraternity Delta Sigma Phi serving as Alumnae advisor for many years and was the recipient of the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year Award in 1965.
Jim was a four-sport letterman for the Big Blue, excelling in football, basketball, baseball, and track. Jim often mentioned the fact that he made the last touchdown for the Millikin football team before the team was disbanded due to the war and the first touchdown for the Millikin football team when he and football returned to Millikin after the war.
However, his most outstanding achievement at Millikin, according to his family, was meeting his wife, Emmy, in 1945 when he returned from the service.
He served his country again during the Korean conflict. His flag and his country were dear to him.
Jim had many many wonderful friends and lived a very full and happy life. He was a kind and gentle man who was truly loved. His legacy inspires us all. Yet, he was a humble, honest and sweet man who enjoyed making others happy. His golfing buddies and Rotary friends were very important to him. Always ready for a golf game, Jim was one of the first to arrange a tee time and a foursome. His golfing buddies always enjoyed the “snacks” he provided on the 13th hole especially during their traditional “Frozen Open” played on New Years Day.
He was a member of Rotary and served as President but more importantly to him played in the Rotary International Golfing Tournaments in Venice, Italy and in St. Andrews, Scotland fulfilling a life long dream of playing the Old Course in St. Andrews, Scotland.
He was district manager for Provident Mutual Insurance Company, a member of the Rotz and Christner Agency and later served as Trust Officer for the Citizens Bank.
Jim was a wonderful husband, father and friend. He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Emmy Lee, and their three children, Jill Williams DeMichele and husband Dan of Phoenix, Arizona, Julia Williams Doxsie and husband John of Bloomington, Minnesota, and James David Williams and wife Nicole of Chatsworth, California.
He was a playful and loving grandfather to Jill and Jeff Doxsie who called him, “Grandpa”; to Danny, Tommy, and Joey DeMichele who called him, “Papa Jim” and to Parker, Carter and Windsor Williams who called him, “Gock”.
He is survived by sisters-in-law, Zetamae Williams; nieces Dina Fryman and Lori Williams, Rose Marie Miller and husband Jim; niece Kimberly Poteet, nephews Rob, Andy and Phil Roach, Jean Kluga and her husband John; niece and nephew Kyra and Chris Kluga; brother-in-law Carl Buchmann and wife Carolyn; niece Caryn Brooks and nephew Craig Buchmann.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother Ernest, sister Virginia and brother-in-law Robert Corwine Roach.
Rest in peace dear sweet Jim. We love you.
The family will be eternally grateful to the staff at Heritage Manor who made his final days “safe and warm”. You were wonderful.
