Kenneth K. Laud
(August 28, 1918 - March 7, 2015)

Kenneth Kurtz Laud, 96, of East Moline, IL, died Saturday, March 7, 2015, at his home. Private family services will be held Tuesday at Rock Island National cemetery.

Mr. Laud was born August 28, 1918, in Pella, IA, the youngest of nine children born to Walter and Matilda Dunlevy Laud. He was raised in Oskaloosa, IA. He enlisted in the US Army Air Force January 13, 1941. He was a member of the 8th Air Force, 97th Bomb Group, 342nd Bomb Squad. He was the head radio operator and waist gunner in a B-17 “Flying Fortress”. He was shot down on a mission to Lorient, France, on October 21, 1942, and entered the German prison camp, Stalag XVII-B in Krems, Austria. He was a POW for 925 days. They were liberated on May 3, 1945. He married Mary Ann Berdahl in 1946. He was self employed for 65 years. He owned and operated Kenneth K. Laud Concrete Construction, completing his last job at age 93. He enjoyed working and reading about history.

Survivors include his daughter, Marlow (Bob) Groy, Moline, IL; sons, Kenneth L. (Peggy) Laud, East Moline, and Danny Laud, Peoria, IL; grandchildren, Annette (Jim) Roby, Robin Groy, Kelly Bance, Kurt Laud, and Kimberlee Smith; great grandchildren, Alaynna, Jameson, Cody, Mason, Ashley, Zach, Taelon, Lincoln, and Chrissy.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Gene Kurtz “ Snookie” Laud; grandson, Gene Kurtz Laud; 8 siblings.

James R. Kubec, Sr.
(February 14, 1945 - March 7, 2015)

James R. Kubec, Sr., 70, Geneseo, passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2015 at Hammond Henry Hospital, Geneseo. Funeral services are 1:30PM Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, with burial in Rock Island National cemetery, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct Military Honors. Visitation will be one hour prior to service time Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial fund has been established.

James was born on February 14, 1945 in Rock Island, the son of Sylvester and Jane (Smalek) Kubec. He married Constance Smith on May 3, 1966 in Rock Island. She died September 30, 2007. James served in the US Army as a helicopter mechanic during the Vietnam War. He retired as a welder from Moline Consumers. He enjoyed fishing, pitching horseshoes, playing cards and wood working. He loved the time he was able to spend with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his children; Brenda (Jon) Sturm, Prague, OK, James R. Kubec Jr., Rock Island, and Marla (Ian) Klein, Galva; grandchildren, Ashley, Kaylah, Lacie, Donald, Kane, Grace, Kaydence, Chad, and Katelyn; great-grandchildren; Walter, Jace, Landon and Sadie and sisters, Sylvia Loucks, Rock Island, Gloria Wilsey, Milan and Bernice Ochs, Andalusia.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; son, Shannon; and an infant son.

Doris Harper
(May 31, 1920 - March 8, 2015)

Funeral services for Doris Harper, 94, of Silvis, IL, will be 10AM Friday at St. Anne Catholic Church, East Moline, IL. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Visitation will be 4-7PM Thursday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30. Mrs. Harper died Sunday, March 8, 2015, at St. Anthony Continuing Care Center, Rock Island.

Doris Kurry was born May 31, 1920 in Moline, IL, the daughter of John and Jennie Bell Purcell Kurry. She married Lawrence Harper November 23, 1939 in East Moline. He died October 27, 1990. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and playing cribbage. But most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a member of the Ladies Auxillary for the Rock Island Lines and a member of the Ladies Elks. She had been an active member at St. Anne's, where she had been a member of the Altar Society and the School PTA. Survivors include her daughter, Lynn Haesaert, Syracuse, NY, Gail (Craig) Bunge, Davenport, IA, and Chris (Marty) Griffin, Port Byron, IL; 9 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson and 1 great great granddaughter.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sisters, Ruby Cromwell and Maybel Hartman; brother, John LeRoy “Buck" Kurry.

LaVonee Powell
(April 8, 1941 - March 15, 2015)

LaVonee Powell, 73, Hampton, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2015 at her home. Funeral services are 11 AM Monday at Wildwood Baptist Church, East Moline. Visitation is from 10 AM until service time. Burial will be in Grandview cemetery, Grandview, IA. Memorials may be made to the Sunday School Program at Wildwood Baptist Church.

LaVonee was born on April 8, 1941 in Columbus Junction, IA, the daughter of Harry and Geraldine (Sabin) Thornton. She graduated from North East Missouri State at Kirksville and graduated from DePaul University in Chicago. She married Chester Powell on April 9, 1966 in Davenport. He died on June 5, 2013. LaVonee was a certified Montessori Teacher, and had taught school at Villa Montessori Moline for nearly 40 years. She was a dedicated member of Wildwood Baptist Church and had taught Sunday School. Mrs. Powell enjoyed painting.

Survivors include her sisters, Donna (Harry) Dickey, Wapello, IA, Judy (Tom) Wykert, Wapello and Patty (Gary) Verrelli, Rock Island, several nieces and nephews and a brother-in-law Jimmy Powell.

Ramona Gomez
(Died March 18, 2015)

Ramona D. Gomez, 90, East Moline, passed away on March 18, 2015 at the home of her daughter Anita in Jarrell, TX. Funeral services are 10 AM Tuesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis. Entombment is in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation is 4-7 PM Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd,. East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 3PM. Memorials may be made to Hospice Compassus Austin Texas Branch.

Ramona was born on August 31, 1924 in Ft. Madison, IA. She worked at Sheaffers Pen, Mother’s Pie, Buddy-L and Sears. She volunteered for many years at Illini Hospital, St. Mary’s Library and reading to grade school students. She was a Eucharistic Minister at St. Mary’s Church in East Moline. She liked to take walks, dance, knit, crochet, follow Cubs baseball and loved singing in the choir at St. Mary’s and then later at Our Lady of Guadalupe Church. Special thanks to Barb Michalek for being such a special friend. Thanks to Hospice and Visiting Angels from Temple, TX.

Pauline Marie Mendoza

Mrs. Mendoza died Saturday, March 21, 2015, at Clarissa Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA. Pauline Ponciano was born June 22, 1933, in Moline, IL, the daughter of Felipe and Concha Perez Ponciano. She married Angelo J. Mendoza August 18, 1956 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis, IL. Over the years she had worked for the former Buddy L. Toy Co., East Moline, The Licorice Factory, Moline, The State of IL, The Daily Dispatch, Moline and Community Savings and Loan, East Moline. She was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and watching Wheel of Fortune. She was an avid Chicago Bulls fan. Pauline enjoyed planting flowers in her yard and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include her husband, Angelo Mendoza, East Moline; daughters, Karen Woods, Rock Island, and Annette Mendoza Burlington, IA; sons, Angelo “Duly” Mendoza, Chicago, IL, and James “Jim” Mendoza, Moline; grandchildren, Kia Mendoza, Trent Mendoza, Aaron Woods, Anissa Woods, and Mason Mendoza; 6 great grandchildren; sisters, Rose Terronez, Moline, Lucille Bernal, Perris, CA, Esther Rasso, East Moline, and Mary Rangel, Silvis; brother, Cruz “Lenny” (Kathy) Ponciano, Milan. Richard E Yeater

Funeral services for Richard E. Yeater Sr., 72, of East Moline will held on Thursday at 11:00 A.M at Van Hoe Funeral Home, East Moline. Private burial will be held at Fairmount cemetery in Davenport, Iowa. Visitation is today Wednesday, 6:00-8:00 P.M. at the funeral home where a memorial fund has been established. Richard passed away March 20, 2015 at his home. Richard was born September 6, 1942 in Davenport, Iowa the son of Norman Lee and Genevieve June Eastman Yeater. Richard was an avid bowler, loved playing cards and going on the boat. He was a member of the Viking Club in Moline and worked for Bridgeway Auto Parts in Moline for 40 years. Richard is survived by his children, Geniveive Yeater of Centerville, IA and Richard (Nichole) Yeater Jr. of Monmouth, IL, grandchildren; Alaina, Joey and Jack, siblings Eileen Cotler, FL, Sharon Priester, Bellville, IL, Charles (Laura) Yeater, GA and Robert Grant, IA. Jon P. Jones
(October 26, 1958 - March 23, 2015)

Jon P. Jones, 56, of East Moline, IL, died Monday, March 23, 2015, at UnityPoint, Rock Island, IL. Visitation will be 3:00-5:00 PM Saturday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 2:30PM. Graveside services will be held in Savanna Township cemetery, Savanna, IL at a later date. Jon was born October 26, 1958, in Muscatine IA, the Son of Ivan and Josephine Braun Jones. He married Jackie Sturtevant June 30, 1989, in Clinton, IA.She died December 30, 2009. Jon was a Quality Assurance Specialist working at the Rock Island Arsenal. Survivors include his stepdaughters, Jamie (Corey) Engel, Freeport, IL, and Sara (Ted) Richmond. Hanover, IL; grandchildren, Peyton and Preston Engel, Kally, Abby, Ben and Amie Richmond; sisters, Jane (David) Lamb and Jennifer (Todd) Spear; brothers, Nile (Carey) Jones, James Jones, and Jeffrey (Linda) Jones. Robert Hatten
(Died March 25, 2015)

Robert Hatten, 80, of Moline, IL, died Wednesday, March 25, 2015, at Genesis, Silvis, IL. Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 PM Friday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a time of sharing will begin at 6:30 pm. Graveside services will be 9:00 AM Saturday in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Bob was born July 20, 1934 in Hooppole, IL, the son of Charles and Verda Greenwood Hatten. He served in the US Army Reserves. He married Sharon Denk December 22, 1962. Bob had owned and operated Hatten Trucking and Excavating.

Survivors include his wife, Sharon Hatten, Moline; daughter, Krista (Jayachandran) Kamaraj, Dunlap, IL; son Blair Hatten, Moline; grandchildren, Peyton and Brooke Orendorff, Suriya and Suneel Kamaraj; and sister, Betty Ward, East Moline.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Juliana G. Van Auwelaer
(November 13, 1924 - March 27, 2015)

Juliana G. Van Auwelaer, 90, East Moline, passed away on Friday, March 27, 2015 at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, IA. Funeral services are 9 AM Tuesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis. Entombment is in St. Mary's Mausoleum, East Moline. Visitation is 4-7 PM Monday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 3:30 PM. Memorials may be made to the Children's Therapy Center, Moline or to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Academy, East Moline

She was born November 13, 1924 in Fairfield, IA, the daughter of Maurice and Rachel DeRoose Laisnez. She married Albert Van Auwelaer on May 17, 1947 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, East Moline. She was a graduate of St. Mary's Catholic School and United Township High School, both of East Moline. During WWII, Juliana worked at the John Deere Malleable Works in East Moline.

After marrying Albert, she spent her days as a caring homemaker. Juliana was a lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, belonging to the Altar Society. She enjoyed sewing clothes for her daughters, doing needlework, attending her grandchildren's sporting events, baking her famous rhubarb pies, and organizing every family occasion. Juliana also enjoyed watching the Cardinals, the Bears, and the Fighting Illini games with her husband.

Juliana excelled at being the family's matriarch. Her caring for others went beyond her immediate family and extended to helping her in-laws, grandchildren, nieces and friends. Her loving relationship with her husband of 66 years and her devotion to her children was an example of what family life should be. Juliana was always humble in regards to her own accomplishments, but she would encourage her children to strive for success and proudly acknowledged their achievements. Juliana will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

Survivors include daughters, Therese (Larry) VerHeecke, Port Byron, IL, and Marcia (Bill) Jacobs, Coal Valley, IL; son, James (Linda) Van Auwelaer, Port Byron; grandchildren, Matthew (Carol) Van Auwelaer, Marie (Rick) Allely, Meghann (Brian) Radgowski, Derek (Kristi) VerHeecke, Brent (Cassandra) VerHeecke, Adam (Stephanie) Jacobs, Nathan Jacobs, and Ian Jacobs; great grandchildren, Gavin and Chase VerHeecke, Sarah Van Auwelaer, Olivia and Nathan Allely, Garrett and Charlie Jacobs, Michael VerHeecke, and niece Kathy Barrett.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, sister and brother-in-law Mary Louise and George Vuckis and niece Denise McDowell.

Dale L. Hayes

Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 PM Wednesday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Mr. Hayes died Sunday, March 25, 2012 at Rosewood Care Center, Moline. Memorials may be made to the Quad City Animal Welfare Center, Milan, IL. Dale was born January 4, 1920 in Colfax, WI, the son of Everett and Mabel Mandorin Hayes. He married Lucille Morgan in 1937 in Rio, IL. She died October 22, 1984. He later married Wilma Timbrook July 17, 1986 in Lake Tahoe, NV. He served in the US Army during WWII and had received The Purple Heart. He was a member of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local #25 Rock Island for over 70 years. He had worked for Brasher and Collins, Rock Island, and Moline Heating. He was Plumbing Inspector with the State of Illinois and Inspector for the City of Rock Island before retiring. He had been an active member of the Rock Island Lions. Survivors include his wife Wilma Hayes of Moline; daughter, Patricia Dennis of Milan; grandchildren Randy (Donna) Dennis, Douglas (Ranell) Dennis, and Kris (Paul) Geiger all of Milan; 7 great-grandchildren; 7 great-great-grandchildren ; step-children, Peggy (Larry) Hufford, Hillsdale, IL, Yvonne (Richard) Stauffer, Pittsfield, IL, Louise Schaver, Bloomington, IL and Henry (Shirley) Timbrook Jr., Colona, IL; 8 step-grandchildren; 14 step-great-grandchildren; 1 step-great-great-granddaughter. He is preceded in death by his first wife, son-in-law, James Dennis; step-son, Everett “Roy” Timbrook, step grandson, Timothy Timbrook, and step-great -grandson, Jacob Timbrook.

Mark Spengler
(January 31, 1956 - March 17, 2012)

Mark W. Spengler, 56, East Moline, died Saturday, March 17, 2012 at East Moline Nursing and Rehabilitation. A Celebration of Life will be held from 1-4 PM on Saturday April 7th at Faith Lutheran Church, 1611 41st Street, Moline. A memorial fund has been established.

Mark was born January 31, 1956 in Toledo, OH, the son of William and Anita Spengler. He married Marta Solomonson on October 28, 1978 in Moline and together they had 2 children. He had worked as a service advisor for John Keady but his passion was playing jazz piano. He served as president of the Quad City Chapter of the American Theater Organ Society. He did pipe organ maintenance.

Survivors include his children (spouse), Isaac Spengler, Davenport, and Amanda Spengler (Karol Patrick) Davenport.

He is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Candice.

Gabriela T. Moreno
(March 11, 1919 - September 5, 2015)

Funeral services for Gabriela T. Moreno, 96, of Silvis, IL, will be 10:00 am Tuesday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis. Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery, East Moline, IL. Visitation will be 3:00-7:00 pm Monday at the Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline, where a rosary will be recited at 6:30 pm. Mrs. Moreno died Saturday September 5, 2015 at her home. Gabriela Terronez was born March 11, 1919, in Silvis, the daughter of Benito and Felisa Aguiano Terronez. She married Anthony L. Moreno September 16, 1934, at the original Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, Silvis. He died May 30, 2001.

Gabriela was an outdoors person, she loved tending to her garden and especially loved her peony flowers. She enjoyed crocheting and spent many hours crocheting things for family. She always had a big heart for animals and felt a deep affection for her doves. Her family was important to her and she took care of them with so much love and care. She always had a big smile on her face anytime family members came over to visit. She would welcome them in right away and especially loved seeing the little ones. She liked to cook for her family and would always have “goodies” on hand for she, too, had a sweet tooth. She was a strong woman in faith and love and attended mass regularly. Her faith was a priority to her and her home, which she cherished, was always filled with beautiful religious statues and pictures of the Virgin Mary. She recited her rosary daily and walked in the path of spirituality, devotion and humbleness. She was a larger than life matriarch to her family and her memory will not soon be forgotten. Michael Ray Neels
(November 7, 1950 - September 5, 2015)

Michael Ray Neels, 64, Carbon Cliff, died Saturday, September 5, 2015 at Genesis East, Davenport. Funeral services are 10 AM Wednesday at Van Hoe Funeral Home Ltd., East Moline. Burial is in St. Mary's cemetery, East Moline, where the East Moline American Legion Post 227 will conduct Military Honors. Visitation is 5-8 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Carbon Cliff Little League or the Carbon Cliff Food Baskets for Needy Families.

Mike was born on November 7, 1950 in Moline, the son of Robert “Bud” and Velma (Clark) Neels. He graduated from UTHS, class of 1969. He served in the US Army during the Vietnam Era. He married Alma L. Sitton on December 23, 1971 in Mabton, WA. Mike retired from the Warehouse at Interstate Chemical in January of this year. He enjoyed fishing and playing Horseshoes.

Survivors include his wife, Alma, children, Michelle Neels, East Moline and Brian (Heidi) Neels, Moline, grandchildren, Samantha (Sami), Hailey and Molly, his mother Velma, Coal Valley, brother, John (Sandy) Neels, Silvis, sister, Donna Harris (Jeff Maretich), Coal Valley, in-laws, Sue Neels, East Moline, Joanne Essary, Carrol (Lee) Gamache, Beverly (Ron) Younglund, Donna (Gene) McGeehon, Sheila Whan, Sharen Espinoza and Fred Sitton, many nieces, nephews and cousins and special friends, Mike and Terra Whitmarsh and family.

Jane Cabor
(March 17, 1948 - September 8, 2015)

Jane Cabor, 67, East Moline, died Tuesday, September 8, 2015 at Trinity Regional Health, Rock Island. There will be no services. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society. Jane Hitchcock was born on March 17, 1948 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Hadley and Helen (Luongo) Hitchcock. She married Dennis Cabor on February 25, 1984 in East Moline. She retired in 2008 from John Deere.

She was preceded in death by her parents.
