Memorial Service: 11a.m. with a visitation one hour prior February 20, 2009 at First Congregational Church, Moline
Ward Minnehan, 84, of East Moline, died February 15, 2009 at Rosewood Care Center, Moline. A memorial service will be held Friday, February 20, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. with a visitation one hour prior at First Congregational Church, Moline with Rev. Jacqueline Perry officiating. Burial will be at the Hampton cemetery at a later date. Ward was the only child of Lee and Irena Ward Minnehan and the only grandchild of Charles and Mamie Fitch Ward, original settlers of Rock Island County. He was educated in the Moline schools and graduated from the Moline High School class of 1942 and attended the University of Illinois. He enlisted in the Air Force right after his eighteenth birthday and was an electrician in the 333 Bomber Group with overseas duty in Okinawa. Ward married Janet Stone on April 19, 1952 and they were married for 56 years. He worked for 35 years at John Deere & Company, retiring in 1984 as a Manager, Pricing at John Deere Intercontinental Ltd. He was a member of First Congregational Church, always serving when asked. He was past president of the Moline Exchange Club and a past twenty-year member Short Hills County Club. He was also a member of the John Deere Retirees Group. He loved to play golf and was an avid fan of the Chicago Cubs, the Fighting Illini, and the Chicago Bears. Ward is survived by his wife, Janet; his beloved son, Michael Minnehan and wife Pamela, Columbia, TN; his cherished daughter, Krista and son-in-law, Michael Sage, Johnston, IA; his adored sister-in-law, Julie Stone, San Mateo, CA and his miracle grandson, Taylor Minnehan. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Congregational Church, Moline or Bethany Home, Moline. Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. is assisting the family.

Louis Paul Bellson Age 84, of Sherman Oaks and San Jose, California, died Feb. 14, 2009, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles of Parkinson’s complications following a broken hip in November, 2008. He was born July 6, 1924, in Rock Falls, Ill., to Louis, Sr. and Carmen Bellson. He is survived by his wife of 16 years, Francine; daughters Dee Dee Bellson of Charlottesville, Va., and Debra Hughes of Tulsa, Okla. He is also survived by sisters, Josephine Payne of Kewanee, Ill., and Mary Selhost of Rock Island, Ill.; brothers, Tony of Youngsville, N.C., and Henry of Encino, Calif.; 2 grandsons; 14 nieces and nephews; and many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, infant brother, Alfred; sisters, Edith and Dee Dee; brother, Frank; and son Anthony. A world renowned drummer, bandleader and composer for over 70 years, Louie Bellson played with musicians including Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Count Basie; and vocalists Ella Fitzgerald, Tony Bennett and Bellson’s late wife, Pearl Bailey. Visitation will be held Tues. March 3rd 4:00-7:00 pm at Esterdahl Mortuary, 6601 38th Ave., Moline. Second visitation Wed. March 4th 12:00 noon and funeral services 1:00 pm at Bethel Assembly of God, 3535 38th Ave., Rock Island, followed by private interment in Moline, his boyhood home. JoAnn Scott, age 80, of Orion, died Wednesday, February 11, 2009 at her home. Per her wishes, cremation rites have been accorded. A memorial service will be 5:00 p.m. Monday, February 16, 2009 at Kirk, Huggins, & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd. Orion with a visitation one hour prior. Inurnment is in National cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Memorials may be made to JoAnn’s family for a fund to be established. JoAnn was born November 9, 1928 in Rock Island the daughter of Charles H. and Irene (Briggs) Monroe. She married Robert E. Scott I on February 6, 1948 at Sherrard Lutheran Church. JoAnn was employed as a school bus driver for the Orion School District #223 for 20 years, retiring on January 1, 2000. JoAnn really loved all the children who rode her bus over the years.

Julia Navarro, age 87 of Moline, died Saturday, February 7, 2009 at Trinity Pathway Hospice, Bettendorf after a very courageous 6 ˝ year battle with cancer. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 10, 2009 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Moline. Visitation is from 3:00-8:00 p.m. Monday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline with a VFW # 8890 Ladies Auxiliary service at 5:30 p.m. and a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Entombment is in St. Mary’s Mausoleum East Moline. Memorials may be made to Julia’s family for a fund to be established. Julia was born January 8, 1922 in Atchison, KS., the daughter of Genaro and Modesta (Lopez) Garnica. She married Martin Navarro on June 12, 1942 in Davenport. Julia was employed at the Grant Department Store in Davenport, and as a crossing guard for the Moline School District, and also at the Illinois Extension Service. She was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Moline, where she was a gold star member of the Altar & Rosary Society, and worked in the food pantry. Julia sang in the church choir as well as in the Resurrection Choir, and visited the sick and the shut-ins of the parish. She was a chaperone for Los Amigos Drum & Bugle Corps, was a den mother for cub scouts, troop leader for girl scouts, PTA president, volunteer at Trinity Medical Center for over 35 years, translated for Spanish speaking families thru the Illinois Extension Services, crocheted baby hats, scarves, and blankets, made helmet liners for soldiers in the military, and visited the sick veterans in Iowa City. Julia was a member of UAW #434 in East Moline, and VFW #8890 Ladies Auxiliary where she served as chaplain, president and trustee. She enjoyed Monday afternoon bingo with friends at South Moline Township in East Moline, and UAW # 434 luncheons. Julia especially enjoyed spending time with her family, and dancing to the music of Los Mocambos.

Gabriel (Wanda) Garnica, Davenport She was preceded in death by her parents, son Ricardo Navarro, daughter-in-law Patricia Navarro, son-in-law Donald Howarth, sisters, Carmen Juarez, Josephine Moreno, Mary Reyna, Margarita Vinajeras, brother Joseph Garnica.. Special thank you to Dr. Constantinou and his staff, Trinity Pathway Hospice, the support of the Navarro and Garnica families, and the VFW #8890 Ladies Auxiliary, East Moline.

Verna Hall, 91, of Moline, formerly of Rhode Island, died March 5, 2009 at Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley. Funeral services will be Sunday, March 8, 2009 at 3 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline. Visitation will be from 3-5 p.m. Saturday at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be in Little Neck cemetery Riverside Rhode Island at a later date. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, American Cancer Society or Disabled American Veterans. Verna was born September 10, 1917 in Nasonville, Rhode Island to Wilson and Etta (Walling) Pickering. She married Albert Hall in East Providence, Rhode Island in 1940. He preceded her in death in 1988. Verna was employed for 50 years as a nurse for numerous hospitals and nursing homes. She retired in 1987. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline. She enjoyed playing the organ, doing crossword puzzles and reading. After her retirement, she volunteered at Trinity Medical Center.

A funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, January 19, 2009 at Esterdahl Mortuary & Crematory, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Burial and graveside services will be 2p.m. on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at Essex cemetery, Essex, IA. Memorials may be made to Salem Lutheran Church, Moline to enhance the beauty of the Salem Lutheran worship space. Corinne E. Linquist was born August 11, 1916 to Mr. and Mrs. Harry E. Linquist in Essex, Iowa. Her Mother passed away in 1925 while the family lived in Denver. She is pre-deceased by her Father in 1955 and her Step-mother Freda Linquist in 1985. The family moved to Moline, Illinois in 1955. Corinne was employed at Illinois Optical, Augustana Book Concern, and Lutheran Hospital. She was a devoted member of Salem Lutheran Church. She is survived by three half-brothers, Merrill, Leon, and Leland and many nieces and nephews.

Burial will be in National cemetery, Rock Island Arsenal. Memorials may be made to her family. Joan was born January 21, 1929 in Scott Co., Virginia to Theodore and Blanche (Feagins) Hensley. She married Lelbert Lee “Junior” Thornburg, Jr. on October 7, 1950 in Jonesborough, TN. He preceded her in death on January 8, 2009. For many many years Joan provided child care in her home. She enjoyed spending time with her family, friends and the children she took care of in her home. She enjoyed cooking and made the best chocolate chip cookies. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at Forest Hill Health and Rehab Center and the nurses at Genesis Hospice.

Marjorie B. Simpson, 85, of Moline died January 26, 2009 at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, January 29, 2009 with a visitation one hour prior at First Lutheran Church, Moline. Burial will be in Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to First Lutheran Church, Moline. The former Marjorie Bernstrom was born September 12, 1923 in Moline, the daughter of Axel and Axelina Myhrman Bernstrom. She attended the American Institute of Commerce in Davenport and was employed in the payroll department of Minneapolis Moline Implement Company for eight years. She married David S. Simpson, Jr. on June 17, 1945 in Moline while he was on a 14 day leave serving in the Coast Guard during WWII in North Africa, Sicily, Salerno, England and Normandy. He preceded her in death January 10, 1985. Marjorie B. Simpson was in the Real Estate business since 1974. In 1977, the Simpsons purchased the Esley Johnson home at 1440 12th St. Moline and it became Century 21 Simpson Real Estate. She retired in 2004. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Ruth Unit, WELCA, Charter Member of Chapter KT, PEO Sisterhood, Valparaiso Guild, Augustana Endowment Society, 65 year member of Nobel Lodge#288 of Vasa Lodge of American, Edith Hans Circle of King’s Daughters, and the National Association of Realtors, Illinois Association of Realtors and the Illinois Quad City Area Realtor Association. Our mother showed her two sons unconditional love. She was the best mom any two kids could ever want.

Dorothy C. Beck, 96, of Geneseo, formerly of Orion, passed away Sunday, January 25, 2009 at Good Samaritan Village, Geneseo. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at Orion United Methodist Church with a visitation one hour prior before services at the church. Graveside servives will be 2 p.m. at the Alpha cemetery. Memorials may be made to Geneseo Good Samaritan Village. Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd is assisting the family with arrangements. Dorothy C. Beck was born in Colfax, IA on February 16, 1912 the daughter of R.G. Carson and Margaret Olive (Ogden) Carson. She graduated from United Township High School in East Moline. She married Elmer E. Beck on May 31, 1941. She worked at Dimock & Gould Lumber Yard in East Moline and later worked at Hardin’s Sales & Service and Augie’s & Earl’s Chevrolet retiring in her mid 70’s. She was a member of the Orion United Methodist Church.
