Paul Ray Castle, 65 of Rock Island died Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Trinity Medical Center, Moline. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, May 20, 2004 at New Hope Baptist Church, Coal Valley. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601 -38th Ave. Moline, IL. Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to the New Hope Baptist Church, Coal Valley or the Popular Astronomy Club of Rock Island. Paul was born November 10, 1938 in Moline, IL. the son of Ross Ray and Elsie Lavina Barger Castle. He married Marrietta Walden on March 16, 1962 in East Moline, IL. Paul was employed as a Technical Illustrator for Deere and Co. for 28 years, retiring on June 30, 1992. He was a veteran of the Air Force during the Vietnam Era from 1961-1965, serving a year in Pakistan. He was an avid amateur astronomer and served as president of the Popular Astronomy Club for over 20 years. He was an officer of the North Central Region of the Astronomical League. He was a creator and author of books and observing guides on double stars and planets published through the Planetary Club. Paul brought his passion for astronomy to the general public through PACMO (Popular Astronomy Club Mobile Observatory.) Paul was an active member and deacon of the New Hope Baptist Church in Coal Valley, where he also served as librarian. He was a founding member of the Midwest Corvette Club. Paul created artwork and logos for companies and individuals after retiring. He enjoyed pursuing and investigating family histories and genealogy. He loved amateur photography and science fiction.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother Lanny Ross.

Glendoris “Sue” Peterson, 77 of Moline died May 12, 2004 at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island. There will be a private family service. Family and friends can gather to share their memories of Sue on Friday, May 14, 2004 from 4-7 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline, IL. Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. Memorials may be made to American Red Cross, Quad Cities Chapter or Alleman High School. Sue was born March 16, 1927 in Sewal, IA to Lennen and Colette (Waughop) Brattain. She married Wilbert Peterson on May 5, 1946 in Moline. Sue was an excellent bowler and a member of the Whiteway Bowling League. She was inducted into the Bowling Hall of Fame in 1993. She also enjoyed playing golf and was a member of the Ladies Elks. Her favorite times were spent vacationing with her family in Hayward, Wisconsin.

James P. Manning, Sr., 71 of Moline, died Sunday May 9, 2004 at his home. Services will be 11:00 am Thursday May 13, 2004 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be at National cemetery, Rock Island with Military Honors being performed by American Legion Post # 246. Jim was born February 6, 1933 in Chicago, IL to Thomas and Anna Powers Manning. He married Shirley Kester on April 23, 1960 in Chicago. He was a US Army veteran. Jim was employed by Illinois Bell and later Ameritech for 38 years retiring in February of 1993 as a repairman. He was transferred from Chicago to Moline in 1963. He was a member of the Telephone Pioneers, Svithiod Club and Thor Lodge #9 Independent Order of Vikings. He also enjoyed golfing, watching baseball, the boats and coffee with his friends. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandkids.

Larry E. Crawford, 57 of Moline died May 7, 2004 at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 15, 2004 at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, 6th Ave. and 15th St. in East Moline. Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery, Moline. Larry was born April 23, 1947 in Brinkley, AR to Riley and Odessa (Weekly) Crawford. He married Kathleen Pollard on June 26, 1966 at Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church, East Moline. Larry’s childhood and adolescence was spent in Galesburg, IL where he excelled in sports, particularly his love of the game of basketball. After his marriage and move to Moline he pursued his educational endeavor completing a Master of Science degree in the field of education. Larry was employed at Black Hawk College for over 30 years as the Job Placement Officer in career services and more recently was an associate professor in addition to his placement responsibilites. He served on many committees, one of 25 yres being the Citizen Advisory Council on Urban Policy for the City of Moline. Larry attended Christ the King Catholic Church, Moline. He was an avid golfer and fisherman. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his family.

William F. Widener, 70 of Moline died May 4, 2004 at Trinity Medical Center, Rock Island. Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 8, 2004 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline. Visitation will be Friday from 4-6 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. There will be a private inurnment at National cemetery, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline, Trinity World Hunger Fund or his family. Bill was born May 13, 1933 in Corning, IA to Frank Maxwell and Edna (Arthur) Widener. He married Elaine Johnson of Sherrard on October 15, 1966 in Rock Island and had three beloved daughters Ann, Amy and Jennifer. He graduated from Corning High in 1951 participating in football and basketball. He graduated from Iowa State College in 1958 after spending two years in the US Army serving in Germany. Bill began in the computer industry in 1959 with UNIVAC and spent 20 years in computer sales and consulting. He retired in 1992 with a medical disability. Bill was a long time member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Moline serving as co-chair of World Food Hunger and served on the church council. He was an avid sports fan, especially an avid Hawkeye fan and enjoyed many friends and acquaintances.

Brent A. Drewes, 44, of Moline died Monday May 3, 2004 at home due to diabetic complications. Brent had struggled with type one diabetes since childhhood. Graveside services will be 2:00 pm Friday May 7, 2004 at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline. There will be a visitation one hour prior to service at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Brent was born September 19, 1959 in Moline to H. Frank and Katrena J. Harrelson Drewes. He attended Moline High School. He enjoyed working with his hands and was great at fixing things.

Lucille W. Webb, age 82, of Chicago and formerly of Moline died May 1, 2004 at Advocate Trinity Hospital, Chicago, IL. Funeral services will be at noon on Wednesday, May 5th at Tabernacle Baptist Church in Moline with the Rev. Melvin Grimes officiating. Visitation will be from 11:00 until service time at the church. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery, Moline. Memorials may be made to the Moline Animal Shelter. Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. is assisting the family. Lucille was born on July 25, 1921 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the daughter of Chester and Gertrude Mayhew Wheeler. Lucille was employed by the New York Store in Moline and later worked for the Rock Island Arsenal, retiring in 1982 after 20 years. Lucille confessed Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of the Tabernacle Baptist Church. She was very devoted to her family. In 2001, she moved to Chicago, Illinois to live with her daughter Jackie. She enjoyed crafts, crocheting, sewing and fishing. Survivors include her daughter and spouse Loretta “Jackie” and Felton Thomas of Chicago; grandchildren and spouses Michael and Diane Wright, David Thomas and Mittie Hall and Barbara Saunders; a great-grandchild Joshua Saunders; her caregiver Orene Hamilton and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her parents one brother and one sister.

Dennis M. Dakan, 55 of Moline died in his home Saturday evening, May 1, 2004 of an apparent heart attack. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday, May 10, 2004 at National cemetery, Rock Island meeting at 12:15 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Ave., Moline. Dennis, who was the youngest son of Oliver Sidney and Margaret Irene (Long) Dakan. He was born on July 28, 1948 in Moline, IL. He was married several times, but had no children of his own. Dennis was employed as a warehouseman for Norcross Footware, Inc. where he had been a loyal employee since 1991. Dennis was an U.S. Army veteran.
