Blanche G. Castle 91, formerly of Moline died Wednesday, April 7, 2004 at Forest Hill Health & Rehabilitation Center, East Moline. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. Monday, April 12, 2004 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. Moline.Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Rock Island Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association. Blanche was born April 4, 1913 in Moline, IL. the daughter of Ora Earl and Ida Gregg. She married Warren Castle on April 4, 1939 in Davenport, IA. He preceded her in death in December 19, 1977. Blanche was employed at the Moline News Agency. She later worked at the Interstate Bookstore on 5th Avenue and continued to work there when the store moved to 23rd Avenue in Moline. Blanche was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church, formerly First Methodist Church in Moline. She enjoyed playing the piano and purchased a home organ which she also enjoyed playing. She took continuing education classes at Black Hawk College in silversmithing and stained glass.

Dolores V. Thornbloom, age 78, died April 3, 2004 at Rosewood Care Center, Moline. Mass of Christian Burial will be at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Moline, at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 6th with the Rev. Jerry Pilon officiating. Visitation will be from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601-38th Avenue, Moline with a wake service at 7:00 p.m. Burial will be in Rock Island Memorial Park cemetery. Memorials may be made to Aspenwood Health Care Center, Silvis. Dolores was born on April 23, 1925 in Humbult, Kansas, the daughter of Isaac and “Bessy” Elizabeth Veteto Colglazier. She married Louis Thornbloom on June 15, 1971 in Rock Island. He preceded her in death in December, 2003. Dolores was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Moline. She enjoyed needlework, sewing, and dancing. She also loved dogs. Survivors include her children and spouses; Sharon (David) Hall, Elizabeth “Betty” Just, Robert (Mary) DeShane, Randall (Jackie) Thornbloom, and Cheryl (Bob) Willits; 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 9 brothers and sisters.

Edward A. Brown, 55, of Moline passed away Saturday, April 3, 2004 at Trinity West Medical Center, Rock Island. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 7th at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd., 6601 – 38th Avenue, Moline with Chaplain Rev. Dr. Robert Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Greenview Memorial cemetery. Visitation will be 5:00-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, with a Masonic Service at 8:30 p.m. at Esterdahl Mortuary, conducted by Doric Lodge #319 A.F. & A.M. Memorials may be made to Ed’s family. Ed was born August 3, 1948 in Moline, the son of Les Brown and Donna Schropp. He worked at Eagle Warehouse in Milan from 1968 to 1978 as a mechanic, and belonged to the Teamsters Union Local 371. Ed proudly served as a Moline Police Officer for 20 years from July 1978 to August 1998. He served as President of the Moline Police Benevolent Association. He retired from the Moline Police Department in August 1998. Ed was a Master Mason, Doric Lodge #319 A.F. & A.M. in Silvis. He was a Christian who enjoyed working in his garden, cooking, watching NASCAR races and was a die hard Cub fan. Survivors include a son, Edward Jr., Grand View, Michigan; two grandchildren, Megan and Ian, Grand View, Michigan; his mother Donna Schropp, Ava, Missouri; grandmother, Velma Chappell, Ava, Missouri; two sisters, Marge Preston, Rock Island and Kay Jewell, Thorntown, Indiana; a half-brother, Dave Brown, Moline; two half-sisters, Melissa King, Petersburg, Illinois and Claudia Brawner, Stanford, Illinois; two step-brothers, Chuck Hill, Moline and Ron Hill, Conway, Arkansas, along with several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father Les Brown and step-mother, Molly Brown.

Eleanor P. Zentz, 73 of Milan died April 1, 2004 at Community Medical Center, Monmouth, IL. Funeral services will be 11.am. Tuesday, April 6, 2004 at Swedona Lutheran Church. Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion. Burial will be at Swedona Lutheran cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Eleanor Zentz family. Eleanor was born August 8, 1930 in Fairbury, NE to L.T. and Martha Henrika Eleanora Janssen Bennett. She married Charles Anderson in 1949. She later married Roy Zentz in August of 1969 in Moline. Eleanor worked in the clerical department for the former Franciscan Hospital, Rock Island and for St. Anthony’s Continuing Care Center, Rock Island. Eleanor was an avid learner of midwestern history especially events that occured aroung Nebraska. She enjoyed gardening, canning, doing crossword puzzles and playing cards. She really loved her children and took great joy in her grandchildren and her great grandchildren.

Mercedes Abel, 101 of Moline, died Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Heartland Healthcare Center, Moline. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, April 3, 2004 at Tabernacle Baptist Church, Moline. Visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be at Riverside cemetery, Moline. Memorials may be made to Tabernacle Baptist Church or the R.A. Allen Scholarship Fund. The former Mercedes Stinson was born November 10, 1902 in Marshall, TX, daughter of Marion and Ida Stinson. She married Albert Abel August 13, 1932 in Kansas City, MO. He died April 26, 1982. Mrs. Abel was an active member of Tabernacle Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir, and served as chairperson of the All Nation Tea for many years. Her other memberships included the Moline Women’s Civic Club and Eastern Star. She loved watching Tiger Woods play golf, was a Cub fan and an avid fisher. She loved birds and insisted that the bird feeder outside her window be kept full at all times. Her favorite song was “ If I Could Help Somebody”, which she tried to do wherever she went. While at Heartland she would read the Bible and other books to those who desired it but were unable to read themselves due to illness. She sang in a group, was elected President of an activity club at Heartland and truly tried to make a difference in the lives of others. She was the youngest and the last survivor of thirteen children. Survivors include her very special friends; Roscoe and Gloria Spencer of East Moline and Joe and Helen Allen of Moline, nephews Larry (Linda) Abel of Canton, OH, Rev. Earl Abel, Kansas City, MO and a host of friends. Roscoe and Gloria wish to express their gratitude to Heartland Healthcare Center and Dr. Reynaldo Castro for the exceptional care given to their friend, Mrs.Abel.

Wyman R. Coulter, 86 of Orion died March 29, 2004 at Illini Restorative Care, Silvis, IL Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, 2004 at Orion United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Kirk, Huggins & Esterdahl Funeral Home, Ltd., Orion. Burial will be at Western Township cemetery, Orion. Memorials may be made to the Orion United Methodist Church where he was a member. Wyman was born July 8, 1917 in Western Township, IL to Guy and Bessie Richardson Coulter on his grandfather’s farm west of Orion. He attended Orion schools and graduated from the University of Illinois. He entered G.E. Insurance Agency in 1939. He married June Rindler on April 23, 1960 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church Davenport, IA. Wyman retired from Coulter Agency in 2004 after 61 years of serving the community. Wyman was a WWII veteran serving in China with the 14th Airforce Flying Tigers. He was a charter member of the 14th Airforce Association and the 75th Fighters Association. He spent 20 years as the clerk for Western Towhship. He was president and secretary of the Orion Business Association. He served as the secretary for the Osco and Western Insurance Co., from 1974-2002. He was a member of the Orion Chamber of Commerce, Orion American Legion where he served as adjutant and finance officer, Secretary of Orion Telephone Co. from 1974-1990 and a charter member of the Davenport 60 plus Club. He loved to dance, which was how he met his wife June. He enjoyed yardwork, gardening and he loved his job.

Mark Robert Mendoza, beloved son of Jesse and Tilli Mendoza, 34 of Moline, died Wednesday, March 24, 2004 in Davenport. Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 28, 2004 at Esterdahl Mortuary, Ltd. 6601-38th Avenue, Moline. Visitation will be Saturday from 1 – 5 p.m. at the funeral home. At 3:00 pm a Rosary will be performed by Sister Michelle of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Moline. Cremation will follow the service. Memorials may be made to Robb’s House in Rock Island or the Robert Young Mental Health Center, Riverside. Mark was born April 6. 1969 in Moline, IL. Mark attended Blackhawk College, Moline before attending the University of Illinois, Circle Campus, Chicago. He was employed as the restaurant manager at Five in Moline. He also worked in the hotel and food industry as a trainer for “Let Us Entertain You” in Chicago. Mark loved tennis, baseball, walking, reading, music, movies, shopping and running, where he completed his first marathon, The Chicago Marathon, in 2003. He also participated in the Bix 7, three different times. He volunteered his time in many Chicago hospitals and the Aids Foundation. Mark was known for his generosity, his abililty to listen to his friends and also as the social coordinator for his many friends.

Visitation will be one hour prior to service time. Burial will be at Moline Memorial Park. Betty was born July 8, 1926 in Manington, West Virginia to William Clyde and Mary Ellen Hickman Watson. She married Robert Morris on January 10, 1948 in Moline. Betty was a member of First Lutheran Church, Moline. She enjoyed fishing and loved gardening. She did extensive traveling and camping all over the United States and through Canada. She loved spending time with her grandkids.

Shawn was a laborer belonging to the Laborers Local #309, Rock Island. Shawn was involved in Civil War reinactments and was a black guns powder enthusiast. He was a member of the International Medical & Dental Hypnotherapy Association. He owned several mules and enjoyed riding them in local parades and on trailrides.

Memorials may be made to First Evangelical Free Church or New Kingdom Trail Riders. Adele was born September 26, 1918 in New Windsor, IL., the daughter of Axel and Augusta (Johnson )Youngberg. She married Harley Hancock on May 22, 1937 in Cambridge, IL. Adele graduated from the Sterling School of Cosmetology, and was a beautician in her own home for several years. Adele was a member of First Evangelical Free Church in Moline where she was a former Sunday school teacher for many years.
