Richard H DeBaugh
January 2, 1922 - May 3, 2011

Richard Hawkinson DeBaugh of Knoxville died Tuesday, May 3, 2011.
He was born on Los Angeles January 2, 1922, to Harold A. and Blanche (Hawkinson) DeBaugh. He attended Beverly Hills High school and the University of Illinois, majoring in British literature and expository writing. He married Charlene Metcalf on January 15, 1951. She died May 14, 1994.
Richard was a fighter pilot in WWII, serving in the Pacific arena with the 41st Fighter Squadron, 35th Fighter Group, adjunct of the Fifth Air Force. He flew over 100 combat missions, which included landing a crippled fighter plane after it took a hit from an enemy plane. During his time in the military he formed friendships that would last throughout his life, attending annual reunions and writing squadron newsletters for nearly 20 years. After the war, he returned to work on the family farm on East Fremont Road. He also taught English at Knoxville High School, retiring in 1985, forming relationships with students and fellow teachers that have lasted to this day. His quiet intellect and his humble, unassuming nature had a deep impact on those around him; to say that he was much beloved in his community would be an understatement.
He is survived by one son, Alan DeBaugh, of Three Oaks, Michigan; two grandsons, Brad (Terri) DeBaugh of Olathe, Kansas, and Ryan (Amy) DeBaugh of Midlothian, Virginia; three great-grandsons, Tyler, Austin, and Easton; a brother Paul (Dorothy) DeBaugh of Boulder City, Nevada; and his long-time companion, Mary Jo Shover of Galesburg. He was preceded in death by his son, David DeBaugh.
Cremation will be accorded. Scattering of ashes will be private. To honor his love of books and letters, memorials may be made in his name to the Knoxville Public Library.
Friends and family may call at the Hurd-Hendricks Funeral Home & Crematory in Knoxville on Thursday, May 19th, from 5-7 PM.
